I visited oak ally in Louisiana a few days ago a "African-American slave gardener from Louisiana (named Antoine) successfully propagated pecans by grafting a superior wild pecan to seedling pecan stock" his master gave him the task after giving up on gmo soft shell peacan . The fuged up part was a few decades later the family got recognized for the peacan s at the state fair. Nobody knows if Antoine knew about the award. Or what thoughts he had. But he was the brains an skills behind the modified peacan we enjoy today.
Many Africans did not and will not receive recognition for many things that were invented by them. It's not a man's world, it's a WHITE man's world.
Yea right I think I know where the pecans today come from but nice try 😊
I use 2-qt milk cartons as tree pots.. works perfectly!
You are my main source on all that grows!
I would love a series on all nut trees, which grow best in which states, how to graft them and which stock to use ìs best.
Love your pleasant explanations! No fancy wording or tools..just real, down-to-earth growing!
Thank you..
Thank you so much! I will try to add some more videos on this!
Like your video on planting and growing pecan trees....!! Brought back lots of memories. Back in 1974 after my wife and I had our home built here in Wharton, TX, I became interested in pecan trees and grafting them. My dad suggested that the root stock should be "pignut" pecan. He knew where such a tree was and brought me a dozen or so of them. They were small and strange looking nuts. I did not taste one, but Dad assured me they were bitter tasting. Anyways, potted a couple to several containers and soon they sprouted and I set out four of them. They grew fast and once they each reached a height of about six feet, I grafted them. Two became Choctaw, a third one Desirable, and the fourth one got some graft wood that a neighbor wanted me to use ( a mistake ). The three I first mentioned have been producing wonderful pecans for many, many years. The "neighbor" one, not so good and I should have top worked that tree years ago when I was younger and better able to do so. Now at 76 yrs, I'm thankful to have had these trees for so long....
Choctaw and desirable are 2 of my favorites 😁
Thank you so much for all the tips. Was given an old planter box and when trying to plant some wild flowers found some pecans. Didn't think much of it and after a few weeks of thinking my flowers were growing I just found out I have 29 pecan trees growing 😅
Loved this video. Very interested in how to grow other types of trees too.
Great video. I also found a sprouted pecan in my potting mix! I think paper shell.
It's on it's way in a pot, 1/2 day of sun.
Smiles and thanks again.
Excellent video as always. There is a pecan tree on our property but We haven’t added pecan trees because they are so expensive. I am looking forward to trying this. Thank you for your videos I always learn a lot.
As always a great video. Very informative. Thank you
Thank you from Australia. I have been looking for this sort of detailed information and found it here. Will subscribe.
You are inspirational and your videos are always very informative. Keep growing!
Thank you so much! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for this video, it's very clear how to plant pecans from nuts, I am from South Africa
Great presentation! Thanks
Great video! Pecans are my favorite. My sister had them all down one side of her driveway on the dairy. I’d also like to know more about how to get sassafras (root beer/gumbo file) trees potted. I’ve tried for years. I know to cut the seedlings from the main root and let get established before digging up. But it’s like they just die when I pot them. Very persnickety lol.
I am so glad you uploaded this video. I watch you all the time! Would love to meet you one day and pick your brain.
Excellent. Thank you.
Awesome video. Thank you.
The squirrels around our place have a 100% success rate. They take them from the orchard and place them in our flower beds. Guess you could say they’re regenerative farmers.
If only we could train them to plant them were we want, then we could have an army of tree planters! Might be something to look into 🧐😆
That's awesome! Thanks. Merry Christmas! 🙏🎄
Merry Christmas to you too!
Awesome thanks
Your videos are great! I first seen the Rambutan from seed and was excited to see more store seed to plant videos. Could you please do one on a cherry tree from pit?
I will put that on the list for this fall/ winter!
Only thing I can say is: thank you 5000 times.👍✌️🍀
If your new here, watch this video a 2nd 3rd or possibly 4th time. There’s a lot of information that will be missed if you only watch this one time lol! Thanks!
i just discoverd your channel and realy like your video's and realy like Grocery store growwing
Happy that you have found me and welcome you to the channel!
Thanks guys I appreciate this
Interesting
Forgot to thank you for putting your video out!
Thanks, will give it a try. This grand old earth could stand more trees. Trees give back so much in return, a marvel of creation.
Question??? Recent winds broke many tree limbs on a beloved pecan tree in the back yard. I waited a couple weeks then took the time to gather seeds off the limbs before hauling the limbs off. The thing is the seeds are very very young, similar to maybe picking any fruits before they ripen. Picked too soon for eating because of the taste not being palatable. Sooo I'm wondering if I can try planting them? Or if I'm better off finding a crafting project and loads of polyurethane spray lol...or if potpourri is a better idea? Thank you so much for your time and for sharing your wisdom, skills, and innovative ideas. Much appreciated Plus I really enjoyed your video today. Made learning fun! Thanks Again
They would not be good for planting and I do not know anything about crafts so I can’t help you there 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video.
Cool way to grow, thanks 😊 I think a fun one to do would be pineapple.... but put a lil twist on it. Graft a mango on it.... is that possible?
Or a pear. Does that add flavor to the fruit? So you would get a pinego?
Or a pearapple?
I just planted my pecans today, but since these take years to do, I'm also working on the moringa 🌳 they can't be grown every where but they are very nice tree.
With grafting the plants have to be very similar. Pears and apples can be grafted together.
I have one that has 2 sprouts that came from the one seed. I cut the smaller one and another one grow right back..
I would appreciate it if you would show how (1) to grow avocado, figs, pomegranate, mango, papaya, walnut, lemon, grapefruit, orange, chestnut, fillbert, apple, pear, moringa, from seed (2) if it is ok to use compost, sand or what medium they should be grow in, (3) if growing them in pots is ok, when to transplant, when to graft, and if they can be grown in Arizona?
I plan to do a lot more “from seed” growing videos this winter in my off season, many on your list are also on my list 👍. I start them in a potting mix but when planting in the ground the prefer moist sandy soils (think creek/river bottom soils). They can be transplanted at any time, but best to do after frost if the tree isn’t dormant( before last frost if it is dormant). They can be grafted once about and 1-2” trunk diameter. They might can be but you will probably struggle getting them enough water in Arizona, they might not get enough chill hours either.
Wow you really broke this down thank you. Now where do I get the graft cuttings?
If it were me I’d just find a friend, family member, or neighbor that has a really productive tree or a pecan I like and take cuttings from theirs, but I’m sure you can get online and order them if you wanted a specific cultivar
Great video
When planted outside do you have to water them as much in fall and winter? Or can you reduce the water amount?
Can probably reduce when the heat lets up
Awesome! Thank you? Starting hickory trees the same way?
Yes 👍
Great info! Can you tell us where you got those deep black tree pots? A link, perhaps? Thank you!
I got them from greenhouse megastore. www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/plant-pots/treepots?returnurl=%2fcontainers-trays%2fplant-pots%2f
Gig 'Em!!👍
Omgoodness thank you I have been doing it all wrong 😂
LOL I’m glad I could help 😂
I have successfully grown pecans from nuts, but I noticed pecan saplings are super sensitive to Texas sun. What schedule of sun time should we use to get them adjusted and adapted to the sun so their leaves don’t turn brown?
Wher I live all I ever see in the stores are the hard shell pecans.
Have never had a paper shell pecan that I am aware of.
GREAT VIDEO! VERY INFORMATIVE! COULD YOU DO A VIDEO ON HOW TO START A HAZELNUT TREE FROMM SEED/NUT?? 😁👍
If I could get some viable hazelnuts I’d love to! Would have to look into that one 🧐
What about the silk worms?
Are you going to take your scions from older thees that are already producing nuts, I've been wondering if that's how they expedite nut production? I hope you and your new family doing well, you gys have a very Happy New Year. Thanks man
Yes, for it to be worth the time and effort one needs to take the scions from mature but bearing material. It’s how you can hijack the system and not have to wait 20 years for the original tree to produce 👍 thanks man always great to see ya!
Ok I will start with native, I will need grafting stock.
Please , make video about apricot grow from seed
Is it important to remove the outer husk? Mine were stratified with the dried outer shell left on, now I’m ready to try and germinate them.
Usually if the outer husk won’t come off the seed itself isn’t mature enough, so no the putter husk doesn’t hurt it but usually means it’s not one I want to keep
Thanks for the detailed video. I’m on my way home to Ohio from South Georgia with pecans to try to grow. I also have Georgia Pine tree cones to try to sprout; I think they would make nice bonsai trees. Do you have videos related to growing pines from cones? Thanks p.
I don’t at the moment but that video might be pretty fun! Will but it on the list! Good luck on your trees!
At the 15 minute mark, you say you add fertilizer to the mix before placing seedling in its own pot. What fertilizer are you using and how much? Thanks
I just use a complete osmocote fertilizer I think it’s just a 10-10-10
If you plant the seedling the fall after germination, how long until they're ready for grafting?
The trunk needs to be about a half inch to an inch in diameter before grafting. 👍
So will wait for followup video in 15 years !
when you get the seeds can you peel the green husks off manually or wait until they fall off naturally
Want to wait until they come off naturally. If they don’t come off on their own it’s not a good seed to use
Is it normal for seedlings to drop some leaves closer to the ground as they grow? I have a 10-12” seedling that’s starting to get brown leaves along the edges at the bottom.
Some leaf shed is normal, but this can also be a sign of watering issues or a nutrient deficiency
One seed per one container always ever
Where you get fertile seeds or pecan nuts
The ones I have are already fucked up roasted
is there a way to check if the seed is good before you plant them?
There are things like the float test, but it’s not really reliable a lot of times. I basically just look for any grub holes and toss those and can tell by the weight of each one. If it feels significantly lighter than the others it’s most likely bad. Other than that you just stratify them, plant them, and see what comes up! Basically if you would keep it to eat, it’s probably good for planting 👍
Hi there, your videos are very interesting, well now, about almost 7 year ago I planted a Pecan Tree, (Southern Pecan Tree) on my backyard, since it haven't produce, I trying to investigate why. Is there any suggestion that you can given me about it. I will appreciated. (and by the way, he is the only pecan tree, most of my neighbors they have Oak Tree.)
Pecan trees are very slow maturing. If it was an ungrafted seedling it can take 15-20 years before it will produce. If it is grafted it could be a pollination issue not having any other trees around
do you prune the root of the pecan tree at some point?
No it’s best not to.
What about old pecans that are in the feezor from last year? Could it still grow?
They may not be super viable from the freezer. Can always give it a shot though! Just have to make sure they are whole pecans still in the shell
what other trees have you grown with success from seeds? Thanks

How often do you water when you moved them to individual planters?
Just check the soil moisture. Should be moist but not super soggy 👍
Does it matter which end of the seed is down in the soil? Also how many years before you get fruit?
I lay the seed sideways so it can go the right direction no matter what
I followed your process this winter and now I have 27 trees from 38 nuts! Pretty good I think, my investment so far about $30.00 dollars for potting soil and planters. I would like to know if you protect the new trees during their 1st winter?
Not really. I would plant them when it cools off in the fall and mulch around the base some. The tree will go dormant and come back in the spring 👍
Since hybred pecans won’t produce fruit, where do you get your seeds?
Also, if you use native pecans for root stock, how do you graft them?
Thanks
I get mine from native trees around me. I’ll try grafting one soon and make a video, but until then I would just check out RUclips on pecan grafting
@@TheMoreYouGrow thanks 👍🏻
How do you grow a Kumquat tree
Can you help me with starting a pecan seed. I have a fresh one just dropped from the tree. The last one I pre soaked. It floated and never split
Like it said in the video, the seed must be stratified. They best way to do this is place the pecans down in damp potting mix or perlite in a ziplock baggie and place it in your refrigerator, they will begin to germinate and once they do they can be planted out in the ground or in very deep pots (they have an intense taproot)
@@TheMoreYouGrow so next I will look for the tap root. The seed was fresh had just fallen off a neighbors tree. Any other tips for me to get a start?
@@phenixrhyder5150 nope, they just need cold temps to germinate. A fresh seed planted or even soaked won’t grow until it experienced enough cold temps
@@TheMoreYouGrow my fridge holds about 37 degrees. Should I make it cooler?
Could you give me a source for wild pecan seeds? Thanks!
I would just ask around to friends and family if you live in the south, it not you can buy already germinated native pecans very cheaply from NativNurseries. If you want an improved grafted selection they will cost more but can be found in a variety of nurseries
If you can show growing black walnut from seed that would be great.
Will see if I can get hold of some sometime!
Would love to know how to grow peaches by seed. Tried and have not had any luck. Also any type of coffee plants grow in north Texas? If so how?
When I get some good peaches this year I will do a video in it! 😁
@@TheMoreYouGrow thank you so much!!
Is it better to use dropped seeds from seeds or should I cut them from the tree?
Definitely ones that fall on their own
What part of the US do you live, I’m in NW Georgia
North central Texas 👍
Sugar Maple trees please!
How quickly from seed to tree can you expect it to bear fruit?
Without grafting would take about 10-15 years. With grafting about half that time
Would turtle tank water work?
You can but I do not know of the potential benefits.
Can you make video about grafting pecan
I will put that on my list!
Ive had Pecans from one of my trees in a box for around 2 years. Would I be wasting my time if I tried to plant them?
Just crack one open see if the meat is still good. If so I’d say it’s worth a try, but may have to put them in the refrigerator a few months to stratify them
I am going to tackle mango, pomegranate, custard apple, avocado..provided they can grow in Tx!
If you show n tell us!
I’ll see if I can work on a few of those
To sprout pecan seeds do you soak in water to test if good then dry before placing in fridge?
Yes I do that sometime. Just have to make sure they are thoroughly dry before putting in the fridge
@@TheMoreYouGrow well, it had been minths since I collected first batch of pecans. Labeled ones that floated in one clear bin and ones that sank in separate bin labeled sunk! Both sprouted! So doesn’t matter of they sink or not is what my experiment concluded! ☺️👍🏻
@@TheMoreYouGrow i didn’t put any in fridge and they all sprouted!
@@TheMoreYouGrow i pickrf up so many pecans, larger ones that I assume come from a once grafted pecan tree, and more small native ones! They are all sprouting! I out them in the miracle grow seed soil and all sprouting! Now I have too many which is funny.
@@TheMoreYouGrow I have successfully grown pecans from nuts, but I noticed pecan saplings are super sensitive to Texas sun. What schedule of sun time should we use to get them adjusted and adapted to the sun so their leaves don’t turn brown?
Gig em
can you give us an update on the pecans
Waiting till fall to plant and will give an update video then!
Have you grown walnut tree
I haven’t but is much the same process I do know
My Grandfather was a Master Sergent, in the US Air Force command, He came back to his home to make a an amazing crop of mix of (Steward & Mohawk species pecans that he ran for many years) Sadly he passed away about 2008'sh mayb. They turned that pecan farm (which should of been inherited to my mother and such (They moved from their shortly b4 his death tho and sold it, (too a guy who claimed to be his long lost sun (who knows)) Either way He was a great man! Could of been running a Pecan farm myself if thing were diff, either way....They ruined the land and f'd my fam. Such is the way I guess...
We called my grandpa Pe-can-Pappy!
Miss him so much! 🥲
My concern would be that the tap root will get tangled up
I use tall tree pots and the bottoms are open so the tap root can keep growing and then I would be planting them at that point :)
I asked if you had any paper shell pecan, yes or no ????
I don’t. seedling pecans are usually natives
🥜🥜🌳👍🏾THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR TECHNIQUES ON GROWING PECAN TREES!!! HOWEVER, I'D LIKE TO SEE MORE OF THE PLANTING PROCESS THAN THE FACE OF THE PERSON DOING THE TUTORIAL VIDEO!!!... I've never seen a pecan tree before. Haha probably won't grow up here in zone 4. Cold places suck
Haha yes a very southern tree 😅😂
Does it need grifting
Yes if you want a variety other than just native pecans
I tried this a couple years ago (failed). I didn't realize how small of pots they could be put in and still be fine. If you know anything about growing apricot trees from seed, we will need to talk about that this summer!
Can help with that!

NOTE
If you do this outside…
BEWARE OF SQUIRRELS!
Truth! 😩
Hi friend
Thanks for this video but i'm sensing that you are struggling with sinuses. Please take a conventional reversal process and avoid ENT and most of so called remedies from drug store either by prescription or not. 1. Steaming with leaves (eucalyptus / lemon or orange / rosemary or lavender)
on average of twice per week.
2. Change sleeping side (train yourself to sleep in an opposite position a minimum of a week vice versa.
3. Cut down on bread and wheat products.
4. Cut down on dairy for at least 2 months or until you can notice recovery.
5. Remove carpet in your house if you can.
God bless you
No one wants to wait 25 years for pecans. Buy grafted trees please. You will be an old man before you get any pecans.
I did say that in the video that grafted is faster… I also said these can be grafted. This is just showing how they are grown from seed and they are a fun project. If you want to get grafted and save time it is definitely an option as well
