A comparison of tactile transducers - Clark Synthesis vs ButtKicker Mini LFE vs Aura Bass Shaker

- This is a comparison video of three tactile transducers. A group of four audio/video enthusiasts got together and compared these three tactile transducers installed in my Berkline recliners. For the actual movie clip audition we level matched each by feel rather than wattage. This is a supplementary video to show how each transducer reacts at the same wattage. For this video a Yamaha P3500S amp was used with a low cut filter at 25hz. Wattage applied to each transducer was the same for each of the transducers. In order of capability the Clark Synthesis TST 209 is the most powerful (rated at 150 watt peak and 4ohm), the Buttkicker Mini LFE is second (rated at 250 watt peak and 4ohm) and the Aura AST-2B-04 Pro Bass Shaker brings up the rear (rated at 50 watt peak and 4ohm).
The subjective results are revealed in this avsforum thread.

This is a really helpful review. Thanks for doing this!
good video I have two BUTTKICKER advance wired in series under my couch . Installed with twist ties at the springs of the couch that run down vertically. What a difference I must say! the board wood is ok but it kept knocking . Was wasting energy by it to. It is installed in many applications .I have the mini concert one to in my single black chair From its own amp. The other two are from my sound reinforcement amp Steller Labs .
Thanks for the the test I went with 6 Aura shakers and the sa230 amp. I already have two in my jeep so I decided to do it for my home theater. I have 2 klipsch 12" subs but wanted more feel so I went with these. I hear nothing but great things and I like my movies loud but not everyone has the same feeling. So with 6 shakers I can lower the sub and get the same amount of bass. Plus I'm saving up for 2 HSU VTF-15H MK2.That should fill in my bass needs very well. Again thanks for the video
I just bought the aurasound bundle with Dayton amp .
Do you recommend any settings like HPF and LPF ?
Should I leave HPF off and only turn on LPF ?
Thanks
@@lollipolly-am4323 That's how I have mine set up. I just want the low frequency
Liked, subbed and commented. Excellent video.
@Anthony B. I haven't tried the crowson, but I'm fairly confident the configurations I used mounted in a chair wont be noticeable to the neighbor.
I just upgraded my home theater system and have old harman kardon avr 147 leftover can i use it to power buttkicker instead of the their own amplifier? Thanks
I'd be curious as to how the I-Beam Sound Transducer compares. Any thoughts would be appreciated
I've been doing some reading and noticed that some people were purchasing a Buttkicker setup, and then adding a Clark synthesis transducer. I've got a sectional couch and would need two transducers. What are your thoughts on combining the both and powering from the buttkicker setup?
jonathan, I have a single aura shaker that i got recently. One Aura pro only isn't enough!
So I' get another one and a Clark synthesis one. But what do you think is more powerful, two auras or one clark? if 2 auras are more powerful then I'll just get 3 auras.
2 auras price is the same of one clark, kind of...
if you had to choose between 2 auras and 1 buttkicker mini lfe for under a racing seat what would you choose..price for 2 aura and amp is 150 ...bk mini and amp is 250.
Hi there could I use a buttkicker amp to power the aura bass shaker thanks
hello what is the best between the buttckicker mini vibrator, dayton vibrator, and crowson vibrator (really very expensive)?
like you test the subpac or woojet vest? that replaces the vibrator? thank you
Can i use any transducer amp to power my butt kicker? i came across the concert series butt kicker without the amp. and i was curious if i could use a different amp than what butt kicker offers because its over 350 bucks
thanks
nate
Msg.#2 - Have you ever heard/tried the Alpine Bass Engines? There very hard to find, but if you Google them it will show you exactly what I'm talking about.Back in the late 90's Alpine & Aurora was battling it out for the supreme Bass Shaker.Alpine for some reason just fell out & didn't make many. They were very close to the performance of the Aurora's,but the price of them was crazy. The Aurora IMO is the better choice of these 3 because of size & there ability to be used mainly in a vehicle. The Clark Synthesis's size is it's downfall even though the performance is better of the 3.
Have you tried a Subpac S1,M1 or S2? Can compare with a bass shaker in terms of sensation?
I am interested on this. Thanks.
I have not, I'm sorry. I only have experience with Aura, Buttkicker, Clark, EarthQuake, and Crownson transducers.
What does the botem of them look like????
I used 1x Dayton @ full 50 rms watts. Mounted on 23inx23in board attached to my couch. Idk about you guys BUT I get good tactile feeling with just one
I think it all depends on how you have it mounted and the 'sturdiness' of the furniture you are mounted to. An Auro might not be enough for some furniture, and it might be plenty for other.
@@jvonengeln gotcha understood
Im thinking about putting one of these in a harley, I have a diamond micro 4 with 6x9 in the fairing and 6.5 in the lowers, i was thinking abbout these in the seat , any thought?
I'm not a fan of these for music, personally. I can't imagine you'd need more tactile feedback than a 1100CC motor (or whatever) vibrating beneath you? :)
would you recommend any particular one of these for car audio application? Namely for enhancing EDM music played in the car while travelling?
+Furry Green Fox I'm not sure you can enhance "EDM music" also not sure there's any need for "music" at the end of something that already has music in the contraction of letters. Also, all dance music is electronic anyway so its the most redundant term ever. The only use it has is it splits good dance music (House, Techno, IDM etc) from cheesy shite for kids. I wouldn't bother enhancing anything until you start listening to proper electronic music. Good luck.
I have the Aura in my jeep since there isntt room for a sub minus the stock center council and the biggest you can go is a shallow 8 and it just rattles. Anyways I put one on each seat in the back wired them up to the amp and its a nice improvement. Cheap and effective not sure why these things aren't more popular
I don't have any buttkickers and never had it b4 will I need a mini dsp or it's plug and play via splitter from my avr to the buttkicker amp then from the buttkicker amp to these buttkickers?
I think you’ll need a minidsp to really enjoy the buttkickers. Because you want to delay your other subwoofers and make the buttkickers fire before your subs. Also you’ll want the ability to set a low pass filter so as to cutoff the higher frequencies. You can try it without a minidsp, but it won’t feel very natural.
@@jvonengeln what if I bought a trinnov altitude36
Still best use case is buying a $200 minidsp to accurately set time delays and customize you FR uniquely for your transducers.
Hi, It's possible to connect this system to a sound bar home theater system like a Nakamichi Shockwafe Ultra 9.2?
If your sound bar has RCA outputs, you can wire those to an amplifier and yes it would work.
@@jvonengeln no the Nakamichi soundbar has no RCA outputs. Someone told me that using a HDMI audio extractor with pass through will be required between the TV and soundbar. Do you think this can work?
@@gabrielmoralesvelez I don’t have any experience with that. There are some caveats. You’ll want only low frequencies going to the transducers. So a full range signal from a HDMI audio extractor would not be ideal, thus you’ll want something to apply DSP. That’s an additonal expense. Something like a miniDSP might be in order.
@@jvonengeln thanks for your insight. I was just thinking. My Blu-ray has a subwoofer audio out. Can I connect the butt kickers to this source?
Hi thanks for this video, have you ever tried the Crowson solution ?
Was wondering if this buttkicker could be use in a flat and if my neighbour from above would "feel" it. Cause it looks much more powerfull that Crowson
These things are over a decade old!? Well, maybe thats why i have 12 subs. I always thought these were a cheesy gimick so i never went this route. No more room for subs so hopefully these scratch my itch. Thanks for the info.
can you connect these to a console like the ps4? if so how?
moises lopez no it would have to go through and amplifier mate :)
+moises lopez you wire them up to an old subwoofer and run them through a splitter like any other speakers mate.
very simple, all devices are working on different mediums. buttkicker is basically lfe, aswell as the others. Clark Synthesis is both tactile and sound based, not just tactile and is more like a speaker in terms of output, not just LFE
Has yo utried Dayton Audio TT25-8?
Nope. That’s one I don’t have experience with.
Does any one remember when the star wars movie ,was being play in theaters that had these bolted to the seats?
No, tell me more!
@@jvonengeln Well basically just that. when the movies premiered at movie theaters, these were screwed to floors and seats so when the engines roared you knew it. check it out. I lived in a not so big town and we got it at our movie thearter. The rumble was massive. I went to a party in my younger years,80-90's , and this guy had a bunch of them screwed up into the floors from down cellar. I think I remember him saying he got them from that same theater I saw star wars in as a little kid, When they cleaned it out and renovated and turned it back into "THE OPERA HOUSE" For plays and things of that nature.
Did the Clark actually weigh 5.35lbs to the Buttkicker's 2lbs? I wonder how much of the Clark's weight is actuated compared to the Buttkicker's 6oz piston. Same for Aura.
The Clark is strange, Everywhere I see it they ask for 100w RMS 300w peak while the Buttkicker demands 50w minimum 250w max.
Been too many years to know. I’m sure the manufacture has set the weight correctly for shipping purposes. However the Clark cannot shake nearly as strongly as a Buttkicker. They feel different. But for aggressive shake you want a Buttkicker advance or LFE.
Gees I agree with you I tested DJ Magic Mike and its better than that.. but give a guy a prop to take time and give a test of the them bass shakers..
Here is a stupid Question: can i use These in my Garden? Just Drill EM into the ground ? Never Seen any Info about this
Ha. For what purpose?
where is this used for ?
You mean 'what'? It's just to add tactile feeling to the low end. They are basically the HT equivalent to rumble packs in console controllers. It's a gimmick if you ask me. I would rather have some nice subs that go real low.
***** I dont see why you would use those. id rather have some real bass
about controllers ,why is it a gimmick ? it just adds an extra effect to the controller user . like when you crash with your car, it vibrates. its not a gimmick.
I was answering your question I thought?? You don't know why I would use what? And I have plenty of vibration with quality subwoofers. No need to waste money on these.
Oh, on controllers it's not a gimmick, I was talking about the bass shakers.
***** oh, i agree with you
100th like (:
that clark didn't shake the water nearly as much as the other two
Boom boom pow? I thought the name of that song was boom boom boom. Not trying to be a correction officer.
please use the same type of wood...not a board and a beam
Dude this was the stupidest experiment ever. Let's put them all in the worst application possible and do a comparison ?? Nice job. I'd say fail but I hate people that say that.
juslom2002 so create your own video to compare...I'll take a look.
+Jonathan VonEngeln People like juslom2002 just go around crying about everything and everyone! They just cant keep there mouth shut!
So where is your awesome comparison video?
"Black eyed peas"... really?
This vibrator test was really disappointing Jonathan, extremely unprofessional and lacking in content. You need to step it up a notch or just retire my friend. This was just pathetic! SAD!
I mean while I sorta kinda agree with you that the video itself didn’t really provide much info
To the credit of the dude that uploaded the vid, he did also point us to the direction of having to go to the forums to get the info on what they thought
So I won’t complain too much
He is a hobbyist
Hi there could I use a buttkicker amp to power the aura bass shaker thanks
not sure but if same watts cant see why not
