A PERSONAL TRAINER suffers with an extreme form of narcolepsy - a condition that causes her to uncontrollably fall asleep up to 15 times a day. For most people, sleep is a luxury, but for Belle Hutt, it’s something she spends most of her time trying to avoid. Whether she’s sat in a restaurant with a group of friends, or she’s on the sofa at home watching a film, the 23-year-old has to battle excessive sleepiness, hallucinations and cataplexy on a daily basis. Belle, from Surrey, was diagnosed with the condition when she was 17. It was impossible for her to study and she had to drop out of college. Narcolepsy has since left her unable to work a full-time job, but fortunately, Belle has found two big saviours in her life - personal training and her boyfriend, Maikel Breukelman.

Hello!
I have just sooo many similar symptoms, the exhaustion, sleep paralysis, etc. I sleep, but gain nothing from it. My diagnosis? Unknown sleep disorder. Whelp, at least I can say I tried...
Also, just to shut up your critics (and quiet your own curiosity), I would still say to try a rigid sleep-wake-cycle with no naps for a few weeks. I think I lasted three and a half weeks before giving up. Trying to walk, talk, or care for your children while your body actively shuts down just didn‘t work, it turns out. I still have the ‚children‘ problem, but they are older now, and they know that sometimes mommy will just grab a blanket and slump to the side for an hour or so.
@@ArDeeMee Did you have a MSLT (Multi Sleep Latency Test)?
@@josephbrinley5201 yes, that‘s where the diagnosis comes from. My patterns don‘t quite fit narcolepsy, and I lack the genetic markers associated with it. So I get all the inconveniences without having a name to point out to others. At least I don‘t (yet) have sleep apnea, so that‘s something positive. ;)

The education system as a whole is flawed. The biggest problem is the rollercoaster set menu mash-up that we have accepted it to have become - completely denying most students the opportunity to learn what they want to learn at a rate suitable to their needs.

I can imagine how different and lonely it could be for her if she wasn't attractive. It can't be easy as it is.I hope things get better for her.
I was thinking the same thing
Same as with all these people who unfortunately have some sort of condition but yet they become popular online and seem to gather people's attention not only because of their condition but also because they are good-looking and lead a great living style. I have though many times if they weren't as attractive as they are people wouldn't be all over them, complimenting them. After all, it is a fact that attractive people can get away with things unattractive people can't.
@@royery I agree with you
So, she's driving a scooter, without helmet, with narcolepsy? I mean, that doesn't seems really safe at all
Azaberym not really because when you’re really focused on something narcolepsy kinda falls back and has a smaller chance of happening but without a helmet is still..

Hi, just to clarify. I myself have narcolepsy. The reason why she’s probably able to do that is because of the medication she’s taking (6:19).
Ever since I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, the medications has enabled me to live a somewhat normal life :) of course, depending on the med, the one I take lasts for a few hours at a time before I start being sleepy and losing muscle control that I’d have to pop another pill.

I was also diagnosed in my late teens with Narcolepsy and it has really worsened as I have gotten older. If I am off my meds, I sleep about 15+ hours a day. I cannot think about anything besides sleeping. I wake up and it is so hard to stay awake. I fall asleep on buses, in meetings, reading a book. I’m on very strong meds now for which i am very grateful. I hope she finds the right Sleep Specialist and right meds. It’s obviously not a terminal illness, but it reduces your quality of life terribly.
Do you have many dreams and visions since you sleep so much?
I have a lot of dreams. they are very vivid and terrifying. The bigger problem is that when I wake up, I recall the dreams perfectly, sometimes even years later. The dreams also tend to “bleed” over into my waking state. Having suffered from this for 40+ years, I have difficulty distinguishing dreams from real memories. So it’s quite complicated & I’m still learning a lot about it.
Toni Castel I 100 percent agree and 100 experience the waking up and staying awake part. And some other parts but mostly understand that part.
Not being funny, but have you tried uppers? Like aderole? Or viavan? If you don’t have ADD, then they keep you awake and motivated.
I think I'm in a similar yet opposite situation. I hear a terrible noise, probably for the rest of my life. Being unable to find rest teared my soul apart but I became another person. Things are better lately. Still wonder if there will be silence after death, though...

Narcolepsy is a serious problem where people just fall asleep without intention. They just fall asleep without warning, they fall asleep everywhere at whatever time it’s really sad because you can’t do anything because you don’t know when you’re going to fall asleep

I work for a Sleep Medicine clinic and I can totally sympathize with her. A lot of our patients have to take Ritalin or Adderall just to function. Even when they fall asleep constantly, they’re not getting actual rest, so it’s almost like reaching your deepest sleep and then being jerked awake. Imagine that feeling all day long. Lack of good sleep can totally mess with your head, that’s where the hallucinations come from. It’s really good that she has people in her life to get through this. Narcoleptics can drive. Yes there is a higher risk of falling asleep while driving, but it’s not impossible...
Usually with narcolepsy, doing something that causes anxiety, adrenaline, or an increased heart rate will keep you awake. Narcolepsy is when the heart rate slows down to the point that the brain thinks it's time to sleep, so driving usually isn't an issue.

It's probably not as rose colored as you think. The editing in this video is supposed to make you think that. You can notice a dark tone in his voice when he explains they no longer watch series together. In essence, he stopped even trying. He's a good looking guy, and she is very desperate.
a man who only cares about looks? Most men won't stay with her because it's not a good sign when someone has a health problem like that and hallucinations. Normally you would try to pick a healthy mate.
@Winter Soldier Yeah, but like I said, it probably not great as it seems. You have to keep in mind that she is all alone in a country that isn't her own. She has an illness that few understand, much less wanna deal with. So she's more or less stuck with this guy.
Now let's look at the guy. He's good looking, has a house in Amsterdam which isn't cheap, so he probably has a good job too. This guy could go with any other girl that is a lot less of a hassle. And that look in his eyes when he talks tells me that he is just using her because she's easy and desperate. She's asleep most of the day and probably receives some generous benefits, maybe rich parents too?
I could be entirely wrong of course. But when I see this guy who has all the options in the world in terms of picking a female partner, and he goes with a "problem case", the chances of him being a knight in shining armor are a lot smaller than him just using her for something.
@@johnames6430 Exactly. It's suspicious.
@@torvamessorem6686 there is something else going on here, like maybe he can't have kids and because of her condition and meds she can't either and when they both realized that they took it further. She's a nice looking girl but this guy could get others as good looking but in better health.

Please wear a helmet on that bike girl! I almost died on a scooter recently and I had a full face helmet on! Upvote so she see's this, honestly it's so important. Helmets save lives and I don't think I'd be here if I didn't wear one when riding.
Legally not needed on mopeds which have a Max speed of 25km/h in the Netherlands. Those have blue license plates.
Great documentary by the way. I hope it doesn't get worse.
I know it's not always legally required but it's just good practice! Car drivers just don't see you a lot of the time and I personally may well have been dead had I not been wearing one when a van came out in front of me. I'm sure she's a safe driver but there's so many unsafe drivers on the road and that's the issue!
I don't think it's safe for her to drive any vehicles in her condition, because if she falls asleep in the middle of the road it could be fatal. But, you're right. She should definitely wear a helmet, at least. I hope she can get some sort of treatment, to keep her awake for a normal amount of hours. I feel sorry for her because, people with narcolepsy miss out on a lot of their lives. I'm glad I don't have that disability, no offense.
Maybe there's a reason she drives a scooter and not a car.. I could see her falling asleep at the wheel of a car but I mean on a bike you've got the wind in your face and you're always quite aware that you're travelling at speed.
House Music Everyday I think it’s a bromfiets it doesn’t go very fast a d she can travel on the cycle paths with it. So might she fall she isn’t in as much danger. But with her condition it is recommendable but recent research showed that helmets only give minimal protection.
Love this ❤️ Her boyfriend is so sweet to her I’m so glad she found him ❤️ What supportive friends too!
I wasn’t diagnosed as having narcolepsy without cataplexy until age 38, but the symptoms started in my early teens. There are several different medications that I have taken over the years to keep me awake, and I have to take different ones to sleep, because the narcolepsy interrupts my sleep cycles giving me insomnia. It’s hard to imagine what this young woman goes through daily, as her case is so extreme. Having such a good support system is great, her mom and boyfriend, but her making the decision not to let narcolepsy define her is wonderful.
I feel so sorry for her and anyone who suffers from any other conditions like this. I wish people could be nicer to these people and accept them for who they are.
When she talked about all those things that everyone did to her while she was struggling because of a condition that she never wanted, I was so angry. I feel really bad for her. God bless her.
Isaac Liu I’ve dealt with the same things... it never stops
I think society has changed from those times. Nowadays, people are a lot more understanding if people simply communicate their conditions.
its honestly understandable why the BFs broke up with her. put yourself in their shoes. you are basically reduced to a walking pillow and your partner cant have a straight conversation without sleeping.
I am so grateful I stumbled on this vlog. I may have this, in fact I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. Sorta late to develope this maybe, I will be 60 next month, but the title drew me in, because I cannot stay awake either! No matter how much I fight it, my need to sleep is overwhelming!! it so sweet that her bf stood by her all these years true love wins!!!
I remember Agatha in a wattpad story "stay awake Agatha" where she's diagnosed the same with this lady. But sad to say, Agatha died.
This story really makes me cry a lot. Still can't get over
Then there’s me and others like me the other end of the stick who has or have serve insomnia . But tbh this girl is much stronger because she just falls asleep constantly and I actually love her for that she is amazing honestly well done
had insomnia for years, the only thing that saved me are my pills. They are not intended to treat insomnia, I have to take them to stabilise my mood swings (clinical depression), but an hour after I take them, I sleep like the dead
When you have narcolepsy, you actually wake up in the night a lot. My sister has it, she wakes up like 3/4 times per night.
Wil damn, that’s even worse. Your sisters strong
Jay thank you, she is. You are too 💖
Wil thank you, that’s rlly kind of you
This is sad but I'm glad she has a loving partner and a cute dog.

my friend have narcolepsy and we are in good terms i diagnosed it first that he have it thanks for belle and for you guys. really, he always said to me gym helps me not to fall asleep so personal trainer it is he is 17 now we are finishing our senior year heading to uni this year. 13 hours sleep is barely enough for him. he got used to it and now his 6 month brother and the daily exercises it keeping him most of the time with full awareness of whats is happening. the classes never gets old the same story he would just pass out completely in an instant a 15 min nap or it would take him an hour nap to get his energy back up.
awe this is beautiful their relationship i mean
3:22 Me thinking: Oh hell no, that neck gonna hurt a lot when she wake up...
