A horrific swimming pool accident left a teenager without her intestines and unable to eat food for the last 10 years. When she was five-years-old, Salma Bashir was playing in a baby swimming pool in Alexandria, Egypt. She sat on the pool’s suction valve and the force was so strong that it ripped her small intestines from her body. Given just weeks to live Salma’s parents travelled with their young family to Pennsylvania, USA for life-saving surgery. Salma was then on a waiting list for a transplant and after a year and a half of waiting, she had the surgery that her family believed would be the start of the rest of Salma’s life. Instead the small intestines transplant rejected and after six months it had to be removed along with Salma’s large intestines and gallbladder; her stomach also had to remain open. Salma now receives all her nutrients via a TPN tube. Hopes for a future transplant are slim - the estimated cost of the five-organ transplant are $3 million but that’s not stopping Salma for giving it everything she’s got: the chatty teen has raised $15,000 already on her Gofundme page, while her makeup channel is a chance for Salma to escape her daily pain and discomfort.

I'd be terrified of swimming pools if it happened to me.

Dude... im so terrified for hee
@@Darkspexter I was thinking exactly the same thing when it showed her in the pool!
If I were her I don't think you could pay me enough to get back into a swimming pool after what happened..
If anyone is interested in how she's doing now, this is from the update she made in December 2022:
"I've been living with my abdomen open since 2009. It has healed some, but will never fully heal. Since I dont have any intestines I can not eat food. There is no way for me to digest or ansorb food. Sometimes I chew food for taste but I have to spit it out, I can't swallow it. I can drink anything I'd like, but I dont get any of the nutrients because it come right out through a tube attached to my abdomen. Since I can't absorb any nutrients by traditional eating and drinking I am on Total Parenteral Nutrition or TPN IV fluids for 20 hours a day, daily. Although TPN has kept me alive all these years it causes severe liver damage and consequently I am currently in liver failure. I recieve my TPN through a central line port that goes to my heart. So, as of 2022 I am currently needing a 5 organ multiveseral transplant( small intestines, large intestines, liver, pancreas, and stomach).
The medical issues alone have been a massive struggle but financial obstacles have made the road to recovery that much harder. Since I am not an American citizen and I didn't have a social security number, I didn't qualify for health insurance for over 14 years of my life. As you can imagine, things were not very easy. After years and hundreds of lawyers, thank God I was able to get a social security number.
Because of this I can now obtain health insurance and thank God the second transplant is possible. I have been reevaluated for the 5 organ multiveseral transplant and placed on the transplant waiting list at the children's hospital for 2 years.
In the early part of 2022 I decided to make the transition from the children's hospital to the adult hospital in Pittsburgh. It has been a difficult decision as a fair amount of comfort and security come from that which we know. Children's hospital would have allowed me to continue my care with them well into my adult years, but sadly my relationship with the children's hospital team was strained, difficult, and traumatic. I felt it was better for my overall health and well-being to make the transition to the adult transplant team. Because of that transfer of medical care children's hospital removed me from the transplant list. They simply thought it would be best since I was actively seeking care at the adult hospital and was no longer comfortable at Children's. However, their hasty action to remove me from the list has left me absent from any transplant list at this time. The adult team will need to evaluate me again and reinstate me on the list. This evaluation is done on an outpatient basis. Unfortunately my liver and overall health has been declining rapidly during the past year and as of date I have not been able to remain outside of the hospital long enough to have the evaluation. Therefore, I am currently not on the transplant waiting list. Thankfully we did start the evaluation process recently and I started getting tests done. So I'm hoping to be officially listed soon.
The transplant itself will be nothing short of a true miracle. Because I have had so many blood transfusions over the years my body has a lot of antibodies. This makes finding a match very difficult. Also, I will need all 5 organs from the same person at the same time. This mean my donor will be deceased. I am woefully aware that this means my miracle will be someone else's tragedy. I struggle with that reality. It truly is very difficult. All I can say is if I am afforded such a beautiful gift of life I will do my best to live in gratitude."
thank you for sharing her update. i am praying for her

Your suffering is just as real as hers. Someone else's pain doesn't invalidate yours, and mental health is just as important as physical health. Take care of yourself, mind and body, and don't be so harsh on yourself. One step at a time. :)
When I was younger my dad always said my stomach and intestines would get sucked out if I sat on or near one of those suction things. Didn't know it was something that actually happened to people.
You shouldn't be doing that
Dimitris Hourd I’m trying to find out the same thing I’m so curious
Dimitris Hourd from down there I’m guessing.. it’s scary. I remember always sitting on it, I never knew it can end up being a tragic accident. I’m afraid of swimming now
I did not know that either. That’s crazy
Same 😓
I remember this being in the news when it happened and it was deeply upsetting. I'm so glad to see she survived and seems to be a happy young woman.
Wow! If I was her mother, I wouldn't let her go anywhere either! She's not being "controlling," she's being protective after what happened to her baby girl. And what an amazing baby girl she has! Salma just jumps back into the pool like it's no big deal...after such horrific trauma. She's an incredible person! 😍❤❤
Salma: Your story has convinced me 100% to be an organ donor! I will be showing this video to my four teenage children as well, to show them how important it is to donate organs after death.
Can't believe she's able to still go near and into a swimming pool ever again... bless her soul!
Amen!! Shes so brave
Audaciously Me ikr, exactly what I was thinking
Audaciously Me right? I would’ve been traumatised for life
Ok :)
RIGHT! I would have a panic attack every time I saw/near a pool!
She looks younger than 16 but sounds and acts even older, she is so mature and eloquent and intelligent, I kept forgetting she's only 16. And her mother is a pure soul
True
How is she 16 she looks so young
I thought the same thing. I wonder if something in the accident also affected her growth?
@@madilynnlong2597 because her organs got sucked out...

I guess people want to overcome their fears and she’s one of those people
You can tell she's been the around medical field for years. Its in the way she speaks. Shes using the right terminology for everything. She should become a doctor for sure!
She’s 16 in This vid right?

After watching such wonderful u tubes such as your family’s, it makes me feel so selfish! Your daughter has gone thru so much, and is a happy girl, just accepting every day as we all should. We don’t truly realize how lucky we are to be healthy until we see what some children have had to endure with sickness. I truly bless parents as you, who continues to make life as normal and happy for their child, even tho they have to endure so much more than others and accept it as part of live without resentment. I pray your daughter gets the help she needs to live as normal a life as others.
The mom is so sweet and supportive! You can tell how much she loves her!

But that does not matter ofc
why did youtube have to show me this right after she passed :/ i was sitting here hoping for her to live a long, healthy life. so sad
Same😭
I am gobsmacked. I've had a brain tumour, with resulting paranoia, terrible hallucinations and finally seizures before it was resolved. What she went through, and continues to, is incredible. Much worse than what I have gone through, and I think she is amazing, with such a strong outlook, and what a smart girl!
Hey, I think you're downplaying what you went through. You're strong for going through what sounds like a nightmare and you are kinda enough to think about her nightmare as well. Hope you stay well!
Not a controlling mother...a loving mother maybe. She is truly a blessing to survive...God bless you!
IK SHE LET HER GO BACK TO THE POOL BRUH
It’s all for the camera
@@jamesr.g.2320 What makes you think that, James?..
What she said about a controlling mother is just a joke..
typical 16 year old.
Her mother looks deteriorated, tired, stressed, sad, scared but finds the strength to continue fighting right along her daughter. She is suffering side by side, literally with her daughter. Cant sleep, worried about Bill's and God forbid, death of a child. With all that being said I can now also include mentioning that she's dealing with a teenage girl which is the icing on the cake of worries. God bless them and everyone in the world that's dealing with anything similar or even worse.
@Amanda B are you serious? You cannot be..... your life has to majorly suck. Take a chill pill. Geesh!
In that order
She looks great to me after ALL she’s been through and goes through with her daughter! They’re both so strong!!💪🏻💪🏻🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@Rae Wilson awww she sounds like a very loving caring person I love her already 💕💖
The fact that she was still able to live her life and talk about this is incredible. Prayers to this woman ❤
Medical costs are ridiculous!! This poor girl is such a survivor, so proud of her!
I love how this mom has to pay for labs, testing, transplants, etc. and *still* supports and funds her daughter’s makeup. We love a supportive mother!!
Dang my mum won't even buy me clothes and I need to wait 9 more months to get a job of my own to get money to do so...yet she buys my brothers clothes all the time and most of them are old enough to get a job...
@Cute Cake But in the US she would've sued and be a billionaire, so...

Poor baby.. 5 rejections ...5 organs... omg 3 million and no insurance
and a bunch of horrible solutions. Not trying to get political but we need a true free market system. USA doesn't actually have that btw.

I'm so proud of Salma for being brave. Well done ✔️
It's crazy that this video has almost 2.5 million views yet only $70,000 have been raised on her gofundme. Please consider donating if you have the means. Even $1 could make a difference if everyone donated. 🙂
celgaro09 not everyone has money to donate. I’m pregnant and every penny counts right now. How much have YOU. Donated?
@@CrustyUgg You are not that much into reading, huh? He clearly stated someone should consider donating if they're able to and have the necessary money to do so..

celgaro09 it’s been a little over a month and it’s already at 70k hopefully it keeps growing and reaches 70k a month then it will happen

Salma is so strong and amazing. She’s goes swimming after her accident like it’s nothing, she has such a strong and confident personality. It’s like nothing can get in her way and she will accomplish everything she wants to accomplish. It’s so inspiring how she takes on every challenge life has for her while still living her best life. She’s amazing just like her mother.
Her mom seems to be so kind and loving and like an amazing caregiver and supporter. Seeing their love and their close relationship with each other really made me cry from joy. They are such a great team despite the difficult situation about her health and injury. ❤
This happened at a local swimming pool near me when I was a kid as well. If this is happening to multiple people CLEARLY something needs to be changed about the way these pools function.
it's sadly all about probability. Just because car crash happens doesn't mean we should change the whole system. They should probably put warning signs about the suction being there to warn people though
@@joesr31 They should put a box grate around the suction.
Not sure where you are but it happened in Australia and the kid died unfortunately. It absolute shouldn’t happen and there should be some safeguard in the pool
Tom actually some pools do that even though they hurt to step on 😅
@@joesr31 This has nothing to do with probability or car crash this should not happen at all! 🤦🏾♀️
