  • It's finally happening, the last video of this rebuild is here... I'll get all the panels of the truck prepped and painted. And I'll be thorough as usual in the description of the process as I'll take you through the paint job step by step. Auto paint isn't all that complicated, but there is a definite set of rules that has to be followed in order to achieve that nice, good looking, factory like finish that will last for years to come. As usual it's a 3 step process where I'll be laying down some sealer, base coat and clear coat.

    Here's a tip on pouring paint from a can. If you put masking tape over the seal in the tin, it stops the paint getting into the seal. I picked that up on Junkyard Dave's channel.

    As someone who has painted 3 cars in their driveway, you certainly can get a booth quality paint job. One thing I did was wait for a day after it had rained, to keep dust down and flying insects at home.

    Just found this channel. I grew up in my dads body shops. You do good work and it’s obvious, you don’t cut corners. That little bit of orange peel probably matches the oem finish perfectly. The first of your videos that I came across was the new compressor build. I’m impressed by the way you think like an engineer. I subscribed and look forward to more.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  Год назад +1

      Appreciate the comment Jacob. I always try to excel at anything that I do. Learning from my mistakes and try to do better next time around. A bit of orange peel isn't really all that noticeable, I just notice it more because I know I could've achieved a better, flatter finish if the air compressor did not partially quit on me.

    Depends on how much sandpaper you have and how much paint you want to waste. Sure you can paint in your driveway, you can also cut the lawn with a pair of scissors.

    Great to see a new video, I've been waiting patiently for you to upload again. The truck turned out great. I sure hope you have the time to continue making and uploading videos regularly. You always have interesting and informative videos.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  Год назад +1

      Thank you Bruce, to be a content creator is a bit of a lifestyle. You definitely have to make a lot of sacrifices to keep the channel going to upload regularly. That means no TV in the evening. You basically work during the day doing your regular stuff and then in the evening you get behind a computer and edit until it's time to go to bed. I kind of got away from that over the course of last year, caught up on some movies and watched a few series... But I also spend a ton of time researching topics that fascinate me. And in the process I gather up knowledge that I will be using in my future videos. I got some really cool ideas that I'm looking forward to bringing to fruition. And I'm top of that I constantly kick myself in the butt for filming a lot of interesting videos but I'm not putting in the time to get them out to you guys. So basically have to make some lifestyle changes because I want the channel to grow and it will not succeed unless I put in the work and time.

    Tip for you, if you can find out the grey shade color, (varies from white to very dark grey) you can have that mixed up in base coat. That color could’ve used a lighter grey for faster coverage.

    upol primer can be used as sealer as well. helps not having to buy more material. TDS says mix ratio for sealer is 4:1:2. i like to add a little extra reducer to smoothen things out

    • @fix206
      @fix206  6 месяцев назад

      That is true, but another thing that I like about the brand of sealer that I use is the fact that it comes in three different colors and I can mix those colors amongst themselves to get it closer to the shade of the color that I will be painting thus requiring less coats of paint and better coverage

    I sprayed a mobile home that was in a trailer park. Granted, it was latex paint, but the overspray was crazy, had people 2 trailers down complaining about it.

    • @fix206
      @fix206  9 месяцев назад

      There's definitely a lot more area to cover with a mobile home therefore I'm pretty sure that the sprayer that you used had much larger orifice that would result in larger droplet size for overspray therefore that stuff took longer to dry as it got carried away from your work area and a lot of that undried material settled down on neighbors trailers/cars and I'm sure those people were not happy :-)

    • @pinrod1

Especially in the summer when majority of the bugs are out, you want to paint earlier in the day, preferably in the morning before it gets really warm and bugs generally like to come out in greater numbers in the evening

      I had a guy that hit a palm tree in his yard side swiping the bed. It turned out to be a bigger project then expected and 1130 pm that night the light had attracted moths and mosquitoes swirling around. He wanted to get it done so we sprayed it with clear which served as fly paper to the swarm. He said it was fine lol.

    I mask all wheel wells, light cavities, receiver hitchs. I do so because seeing over spray says it is bottom budget work. Masking those areas also helps contain the dirt and all of those area are ideal dirt pockets that never get fully cleaned.
    23:40 Kids paint your fuel door. Lots of people, sometimes even professionals forget to paint the fuel door. LOL

    • @fix206
      @fix206  Год назад +1

      I did tape the front wheel well off completely, you can tell in some shots...wheel liner was pulled out of the rear wheel well, and I washed all of the dirt out of there while wet sanding. Tail light opening also got washed out, and all of the wiring got covered with a plastic bag. I did paint the fuel door, cause If I didn't it would stand out, I just rewatched that part of the video and it does kind of stand out by looking lighter, I think sometimes camera will pickup certain things better then human eye, because I can't see the difference in person ... Video was getting waaay too long so I started to trim a lot of the fat, that's why a lot of these details didn't make it into the vid...

    You are so right, I try to save as many of the panels as possible. So far all my auction cars have been for me, but especially if they were flip cars I'd try to save them. And oh yes, cover up any vehicles if close, especially that clear coat floats right onto things you don't want it to! You only make that mistake once, even if it is the wife, don't ask me how I know.. 😉😉😂🤣😅

      Heck yeah, when it's your own money on the line you're trying to save as much as possible, if it's shops money, make your job as easy as possible 👍👍 not the first time wife pulled something like this, but she generally makes up for it by cooking some bomb food... and other things 😎🤣

    You say the paint overspray turns into dust before reachin the neighbors homes/vehicles' yes on a hot day you are right, but do you realize on a hot day' certain materials,
    metal for instance
    "Draws Heat" and metals painted dark colors draws more heat from the sun' black/red/dark blue etc' glass also' windshields.
    When the dry overspray lands on items like that' the heat from such items will soften the overspray back up and let it melt onto those items, hoods/trunk lid/car tops/ windshields/ back glasses/ things in direct contact with sunlight.
    Btw thats one of the better paint jobs I've seen painted in an outside environment.

    Could I make one tiny, small piece of constructive criticism? You should get 2004-2005 Civic Si side skirt panels. With your front and rear bumper skirts, the doors seem to be missing a little extension. That's all, lol. Other than that, I think this car looks great. I had two civic Si's and I wish mine looked as near as good as this one!

    I like wet sanding from a bucket with some dish soap. cuts smoother and easier and paper lasts longer. Doing the sealer, you look mighty close. I thought the distance was supposed to be further away? I've only shot single stage but looks like you can throw that on like primer? Single stage I was taught to never stop mid-panel and keep the pattern perpendicular to the surface. Looks great though. That foam tape idea was new to me - that's cool. I used to just tape down with only half the tape width then bend the other half back which gave a similar "fade".

    • @fix206
      @fix206  7 месяцев назад

      You can vary the distance from the gun to the panel depending on your air pressure. Just try different things at different pressures and see what works best for you...

      No worries Phillip, I know you weren't complaining :-) I worked on the last part of the video all day and into the night, finally got it uploaded around 1 AM and that's when it went live, I was so tired that I went straight to bed without re-checking everything. Made a mistake while uploading and instead of a 24 minute video I ended up with a two minutes of black screen and some music lol didn't catch it until I woke up this morning

      For sure, I figured if I gave him a little boost early on hopefully that will get him going in the right direction a bit sooner than later... It's his birthday today, he's turning 19. When I was his age, I had nothing. To be honest I was actually homeless for a couple of months when I was 19, not due to me doing anything stupid or anything like that. But that's a story for another day :-)

    Your videos are top-notch quality & extremely informative for someone looking to get into rebuilding vehicles. Can you explain what you do about the title process? I assume you're in the States. Do you do more than 5 rebuilds a year? Or are you operating as a dealer?

    • @fix206
      @fix206  Год назад

      I am in the states, every state will have different rules and regulations when it comes to this sort of thing. In my state I can legally sell up to four cars a year without having to get dealers license. I don't go through enough cars to meet that quota. But if I was buying, rebuilding and selling them like crazy then in theory I can also start putting these cars into my wife's name, mom's/dads name and also into your kids names as long as they are over 18 years of age. This way you personally don't go over the limit...
