  • Today we're painting the 1985 Fiero GT with a $39 HVLP paint gun and Nason single stage urethane. The trick to spraying paint with a cheap HVLP paint gun and getting no orange peel is to spray at full pressure... the more pressure you spray at the flatter the paint lays ✅

It ain't the quality of the paint gun that matters, it's the quality of the person pulling the trigger. Bullseye, Chad!

Chads intensity and concentration while paint or doing anything for that matter is awesome. Giving 100% is the only way he rolls and this 'freebie' job is as good as any out there. Thank you, take care and peace out.

You can do it any way you want, yes you can, but I always do the unders and overs first that way you never have to change the gun settings during the wotk.

I agree. As a hobby, I've painted around 20 cars over the years. Always nervous when getting ready to spray. I painted my first car in 1979, in my driveway. People are so lucky to have RUclips now. You can learn anything you want, including how to paint a car. I built a very nice paint booth 30 years ago, but I haven't painted in 15 years, mostly due to the cost of good quality paint and materials...Cheers to Bad Chad for making these videos.

The urethane looks great if applied well. I had a 68' charger back in the eighties that was painted with urethane single stage in dark metallic green and it looked like a new car when it was done and after watching how well your 39 dollar paint gun worked it has inspired me to try one myself.

@BabyPiggy He's said before he uses windex to clean the surface and that's it. It works for him. Most of the paint jobs I see him do are good but he doesn't go overboard on putting in tons of unnecessary hours if the project doesn't warrant that. It's a Fiero for godsakes. They were marketed as a poor man's vette. They used a chevette suspension. lol.

@@85square actually no there isnt....if u use the proper care from the start to final prep then the dirt and residue should be gone. Also a clean environment is a must with a single stage. With a base coat clear coat if u get some dirt, dust or bugs u can fix it before the clear. If its a single stage all u have is the prep and environment element that will dictate the outcome amd what level of painter u are..
I paint ppg single stage everyday with a ppg base / clear overall paint job about 3times a week. Probably over 900 53ft 8 axle trailers and semi trucks.. from plain jane to 7 or 8 different candy colors (tri stage).. so i am still in training

CHAD,,A COUPLE ,,SUGGESTIONS,, From a guy thats painted over 10k cars/trucks i my carreer,, 1st ALWAYS NOT JUST DUST WITH AIR,,USE A TACK RAG OR TACK CLOTH,its a sticky cloth that u litely go from top to bottom inc masking paper,,USE GRAVITY ,,TOP TO BOTTOM,, 2nd try to Ground Car,,especially a plastic car like Fiero ,,Static builds up every time you wipe car n even blowing air over panels creates , a static charge that u want to neutralize , So to attract less Dirt n Dust ,,3rd LESS IS MORE,,Figure out how to pattern job,,meaning take the least # of passes around painted areas,,(EX Fiero is short car so U can probably reach over hood from front ,,Always reach away from yourself n work back toward outside,,On a longer car You'd have to Paint Rt 1/2 then Lft 1/2, and work back to outside n continue across top of fender to bottom,,Don't worry about little tails of fender or 1/4 panels,, Paint them When U Paint the Doors, get to mid point and then extend your reach to catch n paint lower fenders n rear fenders,,AGAIN LESS IS MORE,,U WILL MAKE LESS PASSES AND GET MORE MATERIAL ON CAR WITH LESS OVER LAPP ,,AND MINIMIZE CHANCE OF RUNNING PNT ,,BUT EVENLY FLOW COAT ALL AREAS THE SAME ,, ON A SHORT REAR CAR ,,STAND AT REAR,,N WORK FROM REAR WINDOW BACK ACROSS REAR LID SIDE TO SIDE ,,PAINT IT LIKE A BOX ,,STAY 8-10 INCHES OR HANDS BREATH AT 90 degrees to panel u r spraying,,Then go to outside of Side 1/4 Pnl n start at top front to rear all way to bottom of main face ,,n give it 1 spray arch around wheel,,Again less is More ,,THEN STOP,,,STOP,, WALK AROUND ,,JOB LOOK,,FROM DIFF ANGLES ,,TO SEE,,DRY SPOTS,, DIRT,, BUGS ,,ETC,, IF U GET BIG DIRT OR BUGS,, MAKE A REVERSE STICKY TAPE CONE ,, n walk around and carefully dab into just barely touching imperfection to pull it Out of Wet Panel,,don't worry do it wet in first or second coat,,it will flow out ,,Don't Blow more Paint,,Again Less Is More ,,LET IT FLOW,,,WAIT LIKE U SAID CHAD ,,UNTIL U CAN TOUCH N GET NO PAINT ,,USUALLY 20-30mins depending on Temperature n Atmosphere,,On rainy days u get less evaporation,,Meaning U n diff directions eed to Let it Dry more,, Dry Hot Days it will dry quicker ,,,3 COATS OF SINGLE STAGE,,should be quite enough,,AGAIN CAT WALK JOB N LOOK AT 45degree angels to see all

Ive painted on and off for over 40 yrs but havent in about 10yrs. Mostly in driveways and garages. 1st was a '65 falcon, probably painted that about 10 times with all different color primers and actual paint.
Just finished painting my dropped f150 street truck in camo today and i still get the nervous feeling i always get, knowing anything can happen to screw up a paint job (paint not compatible with whats underneath, bugs, dust, water in line, random chunk coming out of gun, hose hitting the body) even tho i take preautions for all that i get nervous.
Its always a rush tho unmasking for the view.

single stage is sprayed: 2 an a half coats, 2 medium coats( the paint should be taky in between coats). the half coat is a pulled back mist coat usually for organizing the metallics. this is done directly after the panel is 2nd coated. lov all yur vids

I am just starting out painting and am trying to figure out what to buy as far as paints, clears and tints. Every time I think I have it figured out, I discover that the "paint job" I just watched was a temporary, peelable paint. I would love to paint my car in candy green permanently (after many practice runs on scrap pieces) but am getting so frustrated with the convergence of regular paint and peelable paint. What exactly makes a peelable paint peelable?

you should be covering your arms and face as 2 pack is really bad stuff...you should also be using the mask while mixing/stirring the paint.

now you have money for a new fiero transmission. My dad owned one of these in the ninety's. NYC police lieutenant. He's an asshole. Apparently, his officers felt the same. They flipped it upside down in the secured police parking lot and disabled the camera, I suppose. My neighbor told me he knew someone in his preceint, that's how I found out. Dad told us he " got cut off". Big smiles that day🤣🤣🤣

Start on the roof allowing overspray to land and be melted by the first wet coat. Doing the roof after the hood allows the overspray to land on the semi dry hood, causing peel or texture.

    Hey Chad I believe that's a 1986 not a 1985, this body style didn't exist in 1985

His spraying technique makes me want to pull the $39.00 spray gun out of his hand. Lol.
Poor Customer that owns the car.
They want help to understand why people post negative comments.
It's because ya'll are making how to videos when the proof is in the pudding you don't know what you're doing in anything you teach.
It's ok to make videos on RUclips to make money but at least produce videos that make sense.

I truly wish I had seen your methods for body work and painting before I painted my pickup several years ago! No doubt in my mind it would have been a better finished project! Best wishes Chad! Kevin

You should have painted the mirrors red also, to make a more classy paint job. That's one of the things most Fiero owners do when repainting their Fiero, to make their car more complete looking...!

Probably 1000 different ways to paint a complete car. Thus is the worst. Never Start in the middle of a hood or roof. Cut in first. You will have way to many dry spots. Gun pattern is not wide enough. I have been a body man and painter for 40 years. Have owned my own shop for 27. There are better ways then what he is shooting you. Air pressure sounds way to high as well.
