- Today we're mixing and applying epoxy primer/sealer on the 1985 Fiero GT. Epoxy primer/sealer should be used anytime there is mixed surfaces (primer, paint, metal). It's the perfect product as a final sealer before you paint. Since the Fiero has different surfaces, we need to seal it with epoxy before we paint it ✅

You just sprayed that with no air regulator on that gun? What in the actual f**k
Thank You Chad for another tutorial; especially from us without as much experience. Thank You both for braving the fumes and Jolene for your production expertise.
A Tim Hortons cup..lol...and forgot the reducer..
If want a paint job that looks like gravel after you're done painting this is the way to do it
I painted my 57 Chevy pickup in my garage using a similar method and same spray gun and had never painted a vehicle in my life. Turned out pretty damn good and saved me $5000 12 years ago !
This series is providing great instructional content. Thanks Chad and Jolene!
I like the video. It's a shame you weren't able to show the Epoxy V 2K Urethane Primer. In ships/boats/offshore rigs Etc. Epoxy primers are used as barrier coats because they block moisture due to their molecular structure. Rust needs Oxygen and Moisture. Are automotive epoxies somehow different?
Do to real estate of marine substrates, using airless pumps and 5gal. Kits.Marine coatings are not cheap
Thanks C&J for another really good episode. I, for one, know how much work you’re putting in, and am both impressed and grateful as usual. It’s entertaining and educational stuff. Always enjoy your work.
don't use a McDonald's drink cup because they have silicon in in them. i know cause had to fix the fish eyes
Oh here we go with epoxy controversy.. Now how would epoxy rust before a standard primer? Epoxy has zinc in it.. you must be using some good primer.
If applied correctly, it won't. Well... at least a good epoxy. Nason is not the highest grade paint but not bad either, I dont use it but I imagine their epoxy is decent with probably less crosslinking than better products. If you put it over rust with moisture trapped it might accelerate the rusting but who does that? I have scraps sealed both sides over bare metal that have been outside weather in a salty coastal area for two years. Other than losing some shine it looks fine.
in the industrial paint trade you get lots of different epoxy, I painted tons epoxy sinc, american brand if my memory is correct. Used on oil rigs. Would think the same products would work great on a car too.
The sinc epoxy, we normally had a layer tiecoat between
Thanks Guys....I wish I could have watched You when I was younger....Your show is very informative and Your ideas are out of the box and You spell it out the way it is....if You know what I'm sayin
The freedom of your expression and the style of your videos are above all and outstanding and truly interesting I find your videos Artful and enlightening I just wanted to let you know that and keep on Believing in yourselves and keeping free to be yourself and overall have a wonderful day
Jolene please replace those respirator filters lost my uncle early because of dirty respirators in his own body shop we want to watch you two for years to come paint these day can eat lungs up
I watch all his videos but still baffled that he doesn’t buy a bigger cup instead of mixing paint in the middle of each pass
Yeah, i mix all i need and then have back up parts for any overage. Take it in the booth with you.
Please change your respirator for your health!
Paint society just did a similar video on the sealer before paint but used a gun worth several hundred dollars
He has also done videos using cheaper guns. I don't think he uses the purple gun for anything serious but Harbor Freight does have some better guns for just a little more money.
Don't you wet the floor down before you spray a car.
No paint suit just street clothes? Wow
"The epoxy piece would rust way faster than the primer piece" what? The epoxy acts as a sealer, whereas primer is porous. I thought the whole point of using epoxy was to seal and block water from going through it
He makes a fun video, but hes wrong about the epoxy.
He obviously misspoke
Arnt those mixing sticks incorrect to use when using a cup that is tapered?
Picture a vessel that's a foot tall, with a inch diameter at the bottom, 3 inch diameter in middle.....
You just answered my question. You add more. K.
you’ve right, Chad is not mixing correct the way he do
Nope, with that tapered cup, you add less at the top...
Been a automotive painter for a while, and only painted a whole vehicle twice, a couple of decades ago. Watching you mix, the smells fill my head. Compliments on your economics. Why do those mixing cup cost a small fortune? Stripping down an 80 Pace Car because all those decal checked. Thanks for the refresher course.
Both of you are my fav on youtube. I know the hard work in doing all you do. Also the work that goes into social media to make everything work. You both are the best ! :)
Great instructional videos Chad respect how much knowledge and your willingness to share with the world
At 72 I may never build another car, but the information Chad has provided is locked in my memory while I still live and share. Thanks Chad, great explanation of color prep.!
age doesn't mean anything , you could be here for another 20-30 years now is the best time to get a project and work on it over a few years . maybe teach the kids/ grandkids about stuff if you have any. if not then get some old buddies over and have a beer with them and have fun messing about with the car/ truck. life should never be a bore
@@SamFBM i’m 74 and am working on mu last custom; all done by me. The idle mind thought up another one and I went to the Junior College offering to bankroll the new idea. They agreed and now I spend hours a week supervising work on “my” “last” car. Hmmm, I wonder what a full tilt boogie off road 4WD Subue topless AMC Pacer would look like?
🤪🧛♂️🤨
Fixing to do a paint job for a 83 year old. Its never too late
I have always promotes disassembly for painting a color change so that all the channels and jambs are consistent. For color flash paints I reassemble for the final color and coats for best uniform flash across the length and width of the car. Then arduously polish the cambs and channels.
sprayway glass cleaner works better than Windex.
Chad you seem like you're running on 4/6 cylinders. Hope you had yourself a nice cold beer, 5 dollar footlong and long overdue nap when you were done with this one.
Looks great already Chad. Looking forward to seeing the colour when painted. You and Jolene have a good one as well. Cheers from OZ. Chris. 🙃🦘
I love your builds but, it really is cool to see you prepare and paint a normal-ish, vehicle. Luv y’all!!!
Paint cups are not going to break the bank are they?
😂 I know, right?! That taper in the cup throws off the lines on the mixing stick as the volume increases with the increasing diameter.
So there had to be a reason why the primer was pulled off of the car with the masking tape. 🤔
Glad you are showing this, there are a lot of people that are wanting to do the same for there project. Thanks for sharing
If you are looking for 2-1 and have 4 you need 2 of something 😏 just saying
On those mixing sticks you use the column for the correct ratio and then use the same number.
12th! YIPPIE! BOY HOWDY! YIKES! RAD BAD CHAD! Roger in Pierre South Dakota USA
Another episode I quite enjoyed..well I enjoy them all actually...haaaa...goin to be a beauty of a fiero..thanks to you both for the episode...cya tomorrow
So what’s the controversy? Is it because you can’t sand epoxy primer? I would be a bit afraid of priming up to the tape like that ✌🏻
My Man Chad!! A small amount of urethane reducer let's that sealer lay down no dry spots. Just saying.
Sure, Jolene's looking amazing, but we don't get to see her! You truly are blessed!
A great help watching this video. Question... I sprayed Nason 2k epoxy primer on a tank and it came out looking like a raptor paint job. Very grainy.
I tried different guns , different gun pressures and all came out the same. Only difference to your mixing was I added thinners at recommended quantity. Any suggestions ?
Thanks for the share. It is very helpful to see the whole process end to end without skipping through the longer steps. It is helpful to see just how long you actually spent with the DA sander for instance. Thanks
Dumb question?? What size tip ??? There’s all different sizes when I looked of tips what’s the best for the gun ???
Chad did you ever lived in Moncton N.B.
Like rosewood trailer park...about in the 1980s
Yep,that's how I get rid of my left over basecoats, if car is going to be silver,I'll use my left over silver base as a ground coat, but sealer is best cause it fills tiny sand scratches.
Would you mind explaining the difference between primer and sealer? And do you always have to use both of them on every job if you could give a couple examples please. Keep up the good work!
Wet on wet bonds like the dickens. Nason doesn't have as much pigment in it which is why it is a must for an even color base PRIOR to any color.
I have shot the same color in NASON and in CHROMA PREMIER and the coverage with one coat is WAY better with Chroma Premier.
Plus red is the worst.
Ever check out Tamco 5300 series DTM same resins from bottom to top and can be used as a sealer. Never ever compatibility issues plus a great staff and product line!.
Chad thanks for all your knowledge, I've been watching the channel well over 4-5yrs and you never disappoint, I've watched every episode every day all the way in the West Indies 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Trust Jolene is masked up
In the video Chad said, Jolene is masked up.
Absolutely enjoyed. Thanks again for your way of doing and explaining what your doing. Also just saw where Jolene hurt her back. Please don't hurry the healing. Reruns will be great.
I use that same epoxy primer, FYI it’s actually 2:1. Can get the tds online. Also can add 10% reducer when using as a sealer
Lots to learn hear. Experience can trump book sense a lot of the time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hello thank you for the videos ,what kind of sealer i can use to lay yellow 2k single stage on a c10 to cover it well ??
Great content and instructions. Ready to see the red go on to get a good visual of the car. Chad and Jolene keep doing what you do.
hello there i have been watching for a long time chad you have been a great teacher because of you im am now learning to mig weld when i learn to weld good im going to fix my holes in my ride and just wount you to know what a great person you are and thank you Jolene for showing us
Sweet looking forward to seeing the colour go on 🇦🇺🤝🇺🇸😎👍
Must be in Canada. Saw the Tim Horton soda cups and his 'a-bout' told me that. Am I correct?
Chad your helpful hints are great,I've been painting cars since I was 16 now I'm 58 still Learning alot with an open mind...keep up.the good work guys
Howdy and thanks for taking us through the process
I just have one question you said that Pontiac fiero had the plastic bumpers and fenders and you still and you use the epoxy sealer on those panels correct
Greetings from Vegas
Epoxy primer is just smart. The trunk slammer turned master car painters can sod off
Mr Chad when you said at end if you epoxy a piece of metal and primed a piece of of metal … what type of primed are you referring to that’s better than epoxy
I started using colored sealers for right before base coat. Red oxide under red, green under green, ect. I get better results that way. I really like the House Of Kolor KD3000 series hybrid epoxy surfacer/sealer. Have had best luck with it, available in multiple colors
Your capabilities are high and your knowledge seems to be high but for the life of me I wonder why you repeat yourself so much
Fieros looking great chad. Good filming job Jolene.
3m masker m3000 get one or I’ll send you one I have extras
I like all the work he does but why not to buy one very good quality gun set for primer, base and clear instead of buying multiple princess auto for 40 bucks and save on time sanding and getting less orange peal etc? I have used cheap and a Iwata LS-400 and the difference if huge
Cause he don't know the difference...spray 12 jobs with 12 40$ guns..thinking it's cheaper than buying a 500$ that can do 100s of jobs
I think the 3m performance gun would be perfect. Minimal maintenance, every tip size imaginable, and pretty cheap. He could use the tips several times before he has to toss them and just throw a little thinner through the gun. Immensely better gun.
I agree. That cheap gun is probably ok for grunt work priming but for a pre-paint sealer I dont want to have to deal with orange peel. Even that harbor freight gun that is nicer is a huge step up and its only like 120 or 150 bucks!
What do you do with all your old paint gunes
Lots of knowledge being dropped daily.
How much for the cutlass center console with shifter? Next to the mixing table. I need it
Greetings from Pompano Beach ⛱️
Ihave learned so much from Chad and Jolene
Whats the mix ratio for the epoxy primer and reducer
Why do you spray cleaner on the floor?
I'm pretty sure he's adjusting the fan width of the spray gun.
Hes flushing the gun. You can actually recycle that cleaner easily but on the floor it evaporates and they breathe it.
its the best stuff great adhesion for base and barrier to old paint
No hat recently Chad - looks good ole buddy
Congrats on 160K subs ! Well earned.
And there is the epoxy. No Sanding needed.
Are you not supposed to wait for a induction time before spraying?
The way you mix and use that epoxy it most definitely will fail, you never give it the induction period that it needs to link up before spraying it, you could let it set for a year on a panel and walk up with thinner on a rag and wipe it right off because you don't do the induction period. If you did the induction period after a few days thinner won't touch it .
Well that was very informative thanks 👍
Very nice and fast nice work 👍👍
Useing a tapered cup useing a measuring stick,, not a good idea
Thanks Chad and Jolene for this.
can you use a urethane primer in place of a reduced epoxy primer as a sealer?
Epoxy is best for outside elements … probly a video typo
It's going to be bright red and shiny any day now!
Thanks for another lesson guys. Can't wait to see this little rocket in colour 👌👍
chad, a few weeks ago you mentioned the tip to strip paint with a wheel on a drill. thats been an awesome tip. ive always used wire wheels, but that stripper wheel makes rust removal a breeze.
Your mix is off more than you think in a graduated cup using a mixing stick. I used to teach collision repair/refinishing. I showed my students how far off by comparison, cylindrical (straight sides vessel) vs graduated. Similar to the one used. You're about 30% off. Value shade is a description of how light or dark something is, it's not only to give a uniform base, but using the proper value shade ( light to dark depending on the topcoat color) aids in uniform coverage.
So prime all bare metal first before using the sealer ? Enjoy your vids guys , makes the average fella want to have a go
Epoxy primer is actually a great first coat on metal and in fact that is how it is mostly used including professional restoration shops.
epoxy on bare metal is the best start
I miss your show. I didn't care for some of the cars you made, but i did care for your ability and knowledge!knowledge. The way you Loved your Son, was cool! You tested him, corrected him,,,, but you clearly Loved him!
Hey Chad, have you considered the 3M PPS system? Has the measurements right on the paint cups.
I've been using the epoxy sealer wrong all along. Thanks for the education Chad! You do awesome work.
Nice explanation of epoxy sealer. I suspect it also allows epoxy flexibility just as the base surface.
So satisfying. Love watching and learning. Thanks for the hard work you two
Is that a full fan spray??
Nice! Keep doin what you do!
What pressure do you spray at??
I would like to know myself je never answers just says high presure
Probly around 35 lbs...a better hvlp gun can spray at 15-20lb..and save all that blown away materials.
way to much pressure, I can hear it….and also see all the paint dust he is blasting around
If the compressor regulator is set when the compressor turns on could be 90 psi at the compressor. He uses small air fittings and possibly a 50 foot hose. I would think he is getting something like 60psi with the trigger pulled.
You explain things nicely
