  • Today I’m spraying direct gloss single stage paint with a low cfm R500 spray gun on the Toyota Corolla. With this lvlp spray gun and a small compressor I was able to achieve a nice gloss finish on a budget with great results.

I am 67 years old and learning how to spray. First off you are a wonderful painter as you have a steady hand and great vision. But the reason I wrote this message is to commend you on how well you explain what you are doing. You have taught this old dog some new tricks and I am very pleased with my progress. Just wanted to thank you.

Man same thing happens to me on them single stages. Even the best of us get them dam runs. Salute for even showing the errors. I do the same thing in my channel show the good the bad and the ugly. the fast hardener and medium reducer should have been fine. I do that combo as well. Sometimes what I'll do is mix up all my paint and at a few drops of accelerator then let the paint sit for about 15 minutes so it starts to kick. On smaller cars like that one of course. Man I got a big ass run to wet sand out Monday when I get to work 😒🤦🏽‍♂️🥺 good job king keep em rolling 💪🏼

One thing I learned over the years is to do the top sections first like roof , bonnet and trunk by painting each full panel before moving onto another panel and then I do the sides. Setting up the gun is very important for fan , paintflow and air pressure regulation and using a good water trap regulator as well as a water moisture and regulator right at my gun. I found 30 to 40 psi is good pressure to paint just about anything , from Raptor liner , stone chip and base or clear coats and always get great results. I also wet the floor to minimise dust. Great video

Be very careful for too much reducer also don't spray to close , a good 8" is just goooood. Moving speed and paint flow as well as pressure is all factors playing a part for a bad paint job. Some different types of paint can also play a part.

So glad you showed this. Since I don't have a garage. I'm thinking about shooting my car one panel at a time. I know it'll take forever and I'll use more materials. But I'll probably be shooting outside with a small compressor. I figured if I do it one panel at a time I can take my time and make sure each panel is straight and clean. Then spray 2-3 coats of single stage white on Saturday. By Sunday I can get it ready to go back to work Monday. It's gonna take a few months. But it's better than rushing and messing something up. After it's all done, if it needs it, I can sand it and put another coat on the whole car. But if I take my time I shouldn't need to

    • @UndergroundPaintKing

You have a good plan and it should work well for you!

    • @werner.x

One panel at a time works fine with unicolour paint.
That's how i do it too, because i have no paint booth and, making a huge mess and a big cloud for all neighbours to watch, the landlord will throw me out.
And because i don't paint enough to get routine.
Avoid this technique with metallic. The flakes tend to look different each time you spray.
With metallic better do one side at a time, according to body lines.
Edit: i see, you don't have metallic anyhow. Simple glossy white is great for diy. Glossy black not so much 😆

King another great video. Thank you so much sir for doing this for us.
    questions I have
    1. Is single stage easier to do for beginner or or 2 stage (base and clear)?
    2. Why do you want to do single stage vs 2 stage?
    3. Do you think for classic car single stage is better ?
    4. Does single stage last as long as 2 stage?
Maybe if you can do a video explaining advantage and disadvantage of each?

    • @UndergroundPaintKing
      @UndergroundPaintKing  Год назад +2

It depends on what you plan on spraying honestly, solid color single stage can be easy for a beginner but metallic single stage can be difficult but with base clear it can be a little more forgiving with different techniques when it comes to spraying metallic.
For a lot of people, I believe cost plays a big factor in choosing single stage over base clear and when single stage is done right it has a great finish.
I honestly can’t say that single stage is better for classic cars, I think that’s really determined by what kind of finished product you’re looking for.
If both are done right and kept up with, and maintained I believe they both will last for a long time.
I hope that was helpful and I’ll try to to do a video on this subject Borna Nel

Man, your videos are AWESOME, thanks a lot!
I just got a Vevor 4.8 Gallons 2.2CFM@90PSI and I didn't realize that something similar to this size might be actually capable to be used to paint cars. Do you think that I have to upgrade to at least to a Vevor 6.3 Gallons 3.35CFM@90PSI compressor before even thinking about painting my car with an R500 LVLP gun using a single stage paint?
Or even that would be too small of a compressor?
BTW, huuuuge thanks for showing that runs on the paint, because most RUclipsrs are showing only their perfect jobs on the perfectly prepared cars and the problem is that I haven't done a single car painting job in my life, obviously I'll have a car not perfectly prepared and obviously I'll have runs and all sorts of other problems with applying the paint so big shout out to you for showing that this might happen and what to do to avoid or correct that.
And thanks for showing step by step how to prep the car, how to set up the gun, what problems you may get and so on. It's all in a few vids and it's super informative.
You're the best, keep it up for the beginners like me to get out and try to do something too, no matter that it won't be perfect from the first try!

You’re welcome and I’m glad the videos have been helpful and I appreciate you checking them out, it’s my goal to help as many people as possible! As far as compressor suggestions go, you want to get a compressor that will consistently deliver the cfm required by the spray gun which in the case of the R500 is 3.5-3.9 cfm and if you’re doing a whole vehicle I recommend a bigger tank around 21-30 gallons which will make things much easier for you. You can do a lot with the smaller tank compressors but doing a whole vehicle with one can be challenging. I hope that helps 💯

Love the Videos UPK, wanted to pick your brain on painting an auction purchased crown vic that has white doors and front and back is black. I want to paint it a solid black color, would you suggest single stage or BC/CC. How would you tackle such a difference in colors on the body panels. Should I prime the white with tinted primer and then spray the whole car black? What are your thoughts....

    • @UndergroundPaintKing
      @UndergroundPaintKing  Год назад

I honestly think either way, bc/cc or single stage would work great for what you want to do and if you simply have to sand the panels with no bodywork you could possibly paint the whole vehicle without having to prime or seal anything but it just depends on the condition of the vehicle. If it’s a simple sand and paint I probably would paint the white doors first and get good coverage on them then continue with the rest of the body until I have good coverage. Hope that helps Denis!

You put the first coat on too wet you need to have a cover coat in medium giving enough time between 1st and 2nd coat for the paint to have something to stick to! After two coats for leveling you can add some reducer and do multiple misting costs for leveling! You also need to have a plan in painting you were a little helder skelder!

Depending on how your gun flows out the paint and compressor specifically weather temperature humidity all plays a part
Typically I use a slow to very slow reducer out of a 1.3 hte gun
The gun settings also play a part 2 bars cfm material wide open till hits trigger full fan open
    First coat med wet
Let the reducer flow the paint while it dries
    Next coat medium heavy
Last coat if needed before it dries still semi wet throw a fast wet coat that's it
