It always makes me feel good to see people that know what they're doing make mistakes and own their mistakes, so that not every how-to video on RUclips is a 30 second "Pull here and then push this and the part magically falls out and then you wish it into place and bam you're done!" exercise in wishful thinking. This is why I love you guys.
About two weeks from now you will discover the CV joint is failing and end up replacing the entire axle anyway. 😂 At least that has been my experience, I am done messing with CV boots and CV grease, that stuff is nasty. I noticed the CV bearings were all nice and clean when you packed it with the new boot. I know it wasn't like that when you took it out though, If you don't have a parts washer, doing this in your garage is a huge mess, the grease stinks and gets everywhere. Even if it cost $200-$300 for a new axle it is worth it IMO, life it to short to deal with that mess. Thanks for sharing, been there many times.
When im working all week the last thing i want to do is struggle with that boot. If i spend 150-250 bucks extra i can do it much easier and faster. And still have a weekend left. Absolutely worth it
"UNSTRUGGLED" is a Real Word Now!! I SO understand your pain!! Work on multiple brands, manufacturers, and parts, and come across something so simple that Whoops Our Azz (i feel a whoop coming on, a whoop coming on, 5...4...3,2,1) My MkV TDi has been rebuilt from the sub-frame down. It required One single Driver side, Outer CV joint replacement. Purchased the parts from Meyle HD. Installed as prescribed. Still; That thing is not right. Two separate shops, another set of eyes have said it's good. Still painful.
Pro tip you fill the cv joint with grease before you install the shaft it will pack the joint all by itself. Might have to put the hub bolt in if it's an open design. Also use a sleeve (piece of pipe) over the hub splines to protect them. Finally use the biggest hammer available with in reason and don't swing like a Sally.
I bought a high mileage basket case 2011 golf 2.5 as a project in December. I found that the axles were seized in the bearing. The spindles and all attached parts had to be replaced. What a cf.
You can use the old bolt threaded in just straight into the end joint shaft and it's enough to pop the end joint off of the cir-clip. You could also try the bar of soap truck so you don't have direct impact of the bolt onto the drive shaft
great video! I've replaced an axle for this same reason. IMO, all the best projects demand our frustration, it's what keeps them on the front burner. lol
been there more than once, never had a mismatching clamps though. Oh and the axel grease, I call it "skin of evil" as it gets everywhere and is pain to get off. Interesting approach with the skin of evil, I always worked the grease INTO the bearing to insure the proper lubrication. Then again you are using old bearing.
THIS EXACT PROBLEM happened to me or more like is happening to me one full day trying to get the clamp on then the next day my brother and dad trying because they thought I was joking and wasn't strong enough. I quit for a few days. Came back looked at the parts more closely the old clamp said 104.5 but the new with the boot kit says 102.5. Try to look why, seems the previous owner replace the axle with different part number try to find right boot kit for another two days of research and calls and so called vw audi specialist couldn't find it. I just use a universal clamp and will install it and if the boot comes off or axle brakes I will replace with right axle part number. I'm just done trying to find the right boot for the axle.
Thanks for sharing the trouble you guys had because so many channels make it look like everything is so easy and they edit out the bullshittery that comes along with it. Meanwhile I’m in my garage throwing tools at the wall because whatever I’m doing has gone completely wrong.
U dont need the slide tool. I just take the original Bolt and tourqe it all the way in the cv. The bolt Will push against the axle and it comes out easy.

I have been there too many times. For me it is a crash for one week.I appriciate a Real RUclipsr has courage to show that under extreme self-inflicted stress he crashes just like other animals. It looks like we have to learn to trust ourselves in right places right amounts. But sometimes it goes wrong anyway. One tries to trust like "I Can, I'm able" where as it should have been "I feel I'm wrong and I need to trust that now".
I just replaced both CV axles, brand new from a large supply chain here in the south. Shortly after installing both, the boot on each axle on the transmission side of each shaft slipped out from under the clamps. Replaced both of them under the warranty... and the same issue happened on both axles within a week of driving. Has anyone seen this issue before? Do you think any other part of the suspension could be twisting causing the boots to stretch? Btw, NEW engine and transmission mounts were installed 3 months before the axles were replaced.
It can be way easier if you just tight CV Axle bolt all the way in while the axle itself is straight. The bolt will go deeper inside and put the outter hub out. And you can also grease it though that hole after you done putting everything back together to keep the job less messy
just replaced my cracked outer boot for my 2014 q5. Definitely a pain in the ass but so much better paying $30 dollars for a replacement cv boot than paying probably over $1000 for audi to do it, if not more. while i had the vehicle jacked up i figured i would order new pads and rotors along with painting my calipers. just waiting on back ordered rotors from stop tech.
Great....this popped in my feed and I already planned to do some wrenching later in the evening on some relatively easy things. I hope I didn't just get jinxed 😂✌️
I got stuck in the ditch once with my mk7 GTI. I was eventually pulled out but the mud in the wheels caused a lot of vibration. I cleaned all the mud off the wheels but it’s still vibrating! Any advice? Could it be bad axles?
My mechanic told me there is no repair kit for the CV boot on my 2015 VW Golf TSI S, and the axle has to be replaced after the CV boot has been torn open and leaked out the grease. Do you think this is a fair statement? Just curious because it looks like you mentioned fixing just the CV boot was an option at some point. Thank you!!
These mother Fing Volkswagens. I'm trying to replace the left rear wheel bearing on a 2009 tiguan and its turned into a nightmare. The caliper bracket bolts were seized in the knuckle, CV axle bolt rusted so bad a socket won't fit tight. Trying to keep it under a thousand bucks.
I ended up just using a worm gear hose clamp on mine... Not about to get an extra tool to use these bogus clamps... That's just what the engineers want...
Hi there! I know this is off topic but do you know how I can find the radio code on the RMT 300? Is this an aftermarket radio? I went to a mechanic in Fayetteville to get my ignition fixed but my radio is off and it only has the factory code. Not the RMT 300 code. Thank you
So I went to replace a low beam bulb, pulled the old one out and the new one would not go in and had a different color o-ring. I already did this very job a couple of times with same part from Amazon with not problems. I figured they changed the part some way and now it won't work and got all hot under the collar. Turns out I pulled the high instead of the low beam bulb....Duh!
Absolutely. And just cut a small hole in the grease bag so you can ‘pressure inject’ it into the joint. IF you have any grease left over then add it into the boot.
Does not need 2 tubes of grease.. you need to pack the joint with grease and then the rest in the boot... if you had a spreader tool, you dont even need to take the joint off...
Honesty ..Where would car repairs be without a struggle and some frustration ..just in this day n age everyone edits all the bad out so it looks so easy..
Oooh my god. It's sooo difficult to watch this. This should be named - what NOT to do when changing cv boots. You were hammering inside the cv joint - causing damage to the bearing beds, when you could just screw in the hub bolt and tighten - it would drive out the whole joint effortlessly and damage free. You never bothered to degrease and clean the joint, cup and bearings. You never even greased up the balls. The grease is supposed to be squeezed in a thick layer onto each ball's bed in the joint. Then the bals get installed and lubed on top.... whatever.... probably not a great idea to make videos like that if you're gonna do everything completely wrong.
Its karma for what you guys did to the poor car ,oh Yeah guys you also could have done it without taking it off the car ! .another tech tip if you want to know if you can use the bolt to remove the joint stick a screwdriver in the bolt hole of the joint to check if you have a solid axle shaft 😎
The only thing worse than this is doing the high pressure fuel lines and breaking the brake booster valve at the end just to find out you just made your car a 3200 lbs paper weight 😂😂
Hahahahahah I went through the same with my Tiguan and never... absolutely NEVER will I do this again, shit and I did it by myself cursing up a storm in my living room. Never again buy a new one!!!!! Then after 40 hours later I put the dumb jack under the arm, which slides, hit the axel and all the fucking grease came out!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡
What a mess., another example to make sure you get the right part number., especially if you are too much in to upgrades, retrofitting, OEM plus uprades. The frustrating part is, most people in dealership parts dept, glass replacement guys and insurance wants to go with the vehicle VIN number and only use the part listed for the VIN., even after telling them. Idiots...
Welcome to my life every time I try a simple DIY with my amateur tools.
hello me same here !!!

Paul...Skip the SHRINK, have a DRINK! :) your pain was appreciated on what NOT to do, BRAVO, many wouldnt be brave enough to show their frustration!
great vid - appreciate you sharing the struggle (that we all have even if not everyone uploads it!).
Best DIY video on the planet!!! That's exactly how it is in real life!!! Thanks

Thumbs up to you guys for showing this video when many others would have been tempted to hide their failure.
This was frickin hilarious, thanks for sharing
Good lesson. Also been there many times thinking it’s gonna be easy and it taking a whole day
I hope you guys know that you can screw in the cv bolt when out of the hub to pop of the joint from the axel? Just a fyi.
yes 3 sekunder....
Yes but you may need to add a spacer because the bolt is not long enough (in my case at least).

You're a better man than me Paul. Thanks for the video!
Just replaced mine last weekend on my 08 gti. I managed to pull the axle without unbolting the hub, saved me a lot of hassle.
been there more than once, never had a mismatching clamps though. Oh and the axel grease, I call it "skin of evil" as it gets everywhere and is pain to get off.
Interesting approach with the skin of evil, I always worked the grease INTO the bearing to insure the proper lubrication. Then again you are using old bearing.
Sounds like my project of putting a mk2 (86) gti engine, trans and modified drive shafts into a mk1 (83) rabbit! I should add back in the early 90's.

Great demo of just how wrong things can go even for those of us whom are well experienced. Log Books are nice.

Its how i do it in sweden. Americans
You folks are awesome... Please don't stop with the DIY's

i've repalace the cv boot on my golf mk5 and i didnt have to use hammer. you just have to screw the bolt all the way (min 8:00). it is that simple

Special tool to crimp the clip? A set of pincers also works nicely
Why doesn't the grease push inside the joint but into the cover, then the joint is not lubricated correctly and can seize and break out ???
Man, I wish I could like this 2 or 3 times.
just replaced my cracked outer boot for my 2014 q5. Why don’t you clamp the lower boot first before adding grease??? Also why didn’t you use vag 1682 and tighten it to 30Nm?
great video, very educational. I am sure I will need to do this soon. thank you so much for the information you provide to the community.

I've got original boots on my '05 Touareg. Should I be thinking about repacking/replacing them?
Not unless they are leaking
New experience ❤❤❤❤

This video is pure gold. I can relate.
hi there just wanna ask if i could use a 16" steelwheel with an offset of ET50 it came from a vw beetle, to my vw golf tsi 2018? thanks
I ended up just using a worm gear hose clamp on mine... Not about to get an extra tool to use these bogus clamps... That's just what the engineers want...

If it makes you feel better that I have experienced the exact same struggle trying to change a CV boot before. What a nightmare!
I just did the same thing and there are a few secrets that are painfully learnt.
This is like deja-vu all over again!
would you not just use a cable tie ?
My friend you must just take the bolt & turn it straight in then the cv wil come off no need for hammer ens buddy 👍
can you please change ATF and Brake Fluid ??
We have videos on both of those
oh my days another amazing video love it
Great FYI video gentlemen.
you squeeze the grease into the CV joint so it covers all inside the bearings not into the CV boot
I mean... for a salvage car that you're beating about, why not just go for a universal kit... it's cheaper.
Honesty ..Where would car repairs be without a struggle and some frustration ..just in this day n age everyone edits all the bad out so it looks so easy..
thats part of the fun.
Good job 👍
Did this on my vw r32, fucking nightmare. Grease everywhere could not get clamp to fit either. Ordered a set off Amazon and fit fine
First you should clamp the small clamp
Second put grease
3 put the head of cv
4 clamp the big one
7:41 that's not the right way to do it 😁, in these kind of cvjoint i always screw bolt in and it pushes joint from the axle
Did it 8 months ago, now need a new axel, its a f...King pain to make it a home
If the cage is straight you can wack the cage with a brass hammer and knock the joint off.
I know the pain bro, I know the pain! 😂😂
We all know your luck with drive shafts on this all track
Did you apologize to ya homeboy for snapping on him about the camera?
Nice video
Thanks for a good laugh. Next time zip ties😂
Big ass hose clamps
And we wonder why our tech recommended complete R&R. 😃
I enjoyed watching the struggle. For once, it wasn't me..
Those clamps suck. Use boost hose clamps and reef it with an impact
Enlightening😅
I miss doing these monthly on my old mk4... not
i like it ❤
Jubilee clip check clearance job done. Jesus.
Done this before, hate this. Feel your pain. I've since left this to paid professionals.
Wow nice
It's only 80 bucks for a new axel...
Thank you for the perfect How Not To.
That axle boot would have met the fate of zip ties and gorilla tape to seal it.
All I could think was please don't let that screwdriver slip and jab someone. lol
The full axle is $75
Nice
Oooh my god. It's sooo difficult to watch this. This should be named - what NOT to do when changing cv boots. Why Must Mechanic Work Be Soo Difficult Sometimes...
imo safety for suspension or steering components and packaging for other stuff

You’ll be fine. Brakes are overrated
@@crazy4gta1 it was almost a year ago brother

That’s why you keep those big dumb hvac tie straps around. The cats ass. The bee’s flippin knee’s

Ah theres a tool needed that clamp lol
I would have resorted to safety wire. Then regretted it for as long as I owned the car.
Hahahahahah I went through the same with my Tiguan and never... absolutely NEVER will I do this again, shit and I did it by myself cursing up a storm in my living room. Never again buy a new one!!!!!
