    My main complaint was that Dracovish barely got to do anything before fainting and Aggron pretty much succumbed largely to burn.
    But past that, the battle was quite a spectacle. I think Pikachu managing to counter Metagross’s mobility with full control of the 10 million volt TBolt blasts was a poetic response to how Cradily had defeated Gengar prior through a similar strategy of countering Gengar’s mobility with Power Whip. And I really loved that the Z move wasn’t the finishing move but instead just a good ole Iron Tail. Shows that writers are willing to think of new ways apply trump cards even when we’ve seen them before.
    Ash mopped Wallace before but it was in such unceremonious fashion that it felt like an insult. Glad Steven’s battle will be worth remembering.

    Dracovish and Aggron went down too easily. Also, I think Metagross couldn't calculate or predict Pikachu could command the electricity from his Z-Move is because it's a unique Z-Move that only Ash and Pikachu can use. Steven has never seen this Z-Move (unless he watched the Volkner Hyper Class Battle) to its full potential. Metagross is the only pokemon to not get knocked out from this move but he did only get hit with 3 bolts, not all 7.

    I think this battle was a little underwhelming. Steven's Aggron shouldn't have gone down so easily, considering how strong we have seen it. This is why I hope the battle with Cynthia will be better, considering the interactions they have had in the past. I hope Ash's reserves come back for that one, especially Sceptile and/or Infernape for nostalgia of the Sinnoh League Arc. And I hope there is more buildup for that battle too. Overall, this battle was decent, but could have been better. I think it was the 3rd best of the four.

    • @moebro101
      @moebro101 2 года назад +22

      The issue is that each Pokemon lasts one or two hits and the animation is very weak in Journeys because there isn't enough strength to each hit, the camera doesn't shake there isn't very much blowback from any of the hits.

    • @Eterrath
      @Eterrath 2 года назад +13

      Underwhelming because
      1. Animation lacking any oomph
      2. 1 episode for a 3v3 isn't ideal timing. Plus they gotta fit all the audience reactions too. Should've been a 1v1 or a 2v2.
      The directors pick a move the Pokemon had been shown with previously or a powerful move from its games but due to the above constraints, can't take their sweet time to animate it with the sakuga it deserves. That's why Cradily using Power Whip feels like a Vine Whip.

    It makes sense that Metagross lived the 10 million volt thunderbolt, not because of it's strength because let's be honest, any Pokemon can die if it gets hit by 10 million thunderbolt... I'm glad they sorta gave Gengar some decent fame in its battle (and from the looks of it, they've confirmed Ice Punch got replaced) and I found it kinda-very funny that Dracovish drew the short straw for the whole battle thing. And I was expecting Z-Move to be the finish move, but it's more like it wasn't used to actually attack, but just stop Metagross's movements & keep it still for the kill with iron tail. Albeit sad Gengar wasn't the one to go G-MAX or be the one to take out Mega Metagross. Now that begs the question as to when it's Leon & Cynthia, which of the mechanics will be used

      I did too and while I agree with the criticisms, I still liked it for what it was and I understand why many people dislike the battles in Journeys considering the lack of good animation, narrative, build up and development makes a slight majority of wins feels less entertaining and unearned at times in which I understand the overall disappointment but I am used to Journeys standards by now despite being not as good as XY but I can digress and I wholeheartedly agree that Pikachu versus Cradily was interesting because its a Pokémon you normally wouldn’t see in a battle and it’s very terrifying how it was utilizing its tentacles and sure it felt underwhelming narrative-wise but from a technical standpoint, it was decently impressive despite the result being kinda “mid”, but I am just happy that these two got to battle each other and Steven Stone was handled decently well despite the loss and being slightly disrespected!!! 🥲🙂

      @@RoySmith22 I always felt Ice Punch was a good cover for Gengar (and it helped against Visquez's Raichu) with its Ground weakness & it's a physical-contact melee move: a staple for a lot of Ash's pokemon due to Ash's typical battle strategy. Perfect battle for Sirfetch'd if he were there. With a 4x effective Meteor Assault on Aggron that defeat would've been more believable!
    As for the match itself, it stinks that this was Ash's biggest victory in the anime. He toppled the Number 3 trainer in the world who happens to be a powerful Champion of the Hoenn region. Yes, he beat Iris early in the PWC. However, she's a young Champion like himself. Steven is VERY experienced and powerful. Hence why he's Number 3 and Iris is Number 7. Why does it stink? This was a good win right? Eh...

    While I found the episode good overall, it was... inconsistent? The ending with Pikachu was amazing. But it felt weird to see Pikachu just power through getting cratered into the ground, in an episode where Dracovish, Aggron and Craydily just flopped over after getting a firm tap on the head. Like they didn't quite get the balance between Classic Anime Style battling and VGC Inspired match ups. The Power Whip sequences, and Cradily fight in general, were basically the only really dynamic battle sequences that weren't Pikachu.
    Plus, I feel they made Ash a little... weird with his moves this episode? Dazzling Gleam on an Aggron? Wasting all that energy on a minute of ineffective thunderbolts? Very strange. I didn't quite get 'master battler' vibes from it.

    I really like parts of these fights, but these battles are all to slow and to short. It's just kind of a let down to see some of the strongest pokemon off all time go down in one hit... Ash vs Steven is definitely a great step up from the first fight but I hope they give these fights the time they deserve.

  • @ganoninthepit
    @ganoninthepit 2 года назад +2

    I agree that the battle was underwhelming and flawed in multiple places, but I wouldn't say that Metagross was weaker than in past appearances; as Steven would only likely go stronger while training to win the Masters tournament. If anything, that just means that Pikachu (at least with his Z-Move) is even more impressive than Charizard and, somehow, Kyogre.

    There's an unfortunate hidden bias with all the champions that progressed to the semifinals that I wish was defied in at least one section, being that all of the "spritework" gens lost in the first round.
    Lance, who represents gens 1 and 2, lost to Diantha that represents gen 6, the first generation that replaced sprites for 3D models. Alain naturally lost to Leon since he's from the most recent gen and two gen 6 trainers in the semifinals would be redundant. Iris, who represents gen 5 and the final mainline games animated with sprites lost to Cynthia, and while she represents gen 4 the recent BD/SP remakes and PL:A have updated this older gen's modern relevance and given them modelwork. Finally, Ash transcends all generations but in this tournament is officially representing gen 7 and beat Steven, which did get gen 3 model remakes in gen 6 but still loses out to Ash needing to rematch Leon for narrative reasons before gen 9 is released.
    Basically, it feels like all the older gen representatives were shafted in favor of the "newer" faces that kids nowadays are likely more familiar with and treated as expendable since the anime's target demographic may be too young to ever recognize the older champions and their strengths. I would've liked even just one of the old gen champions to advance past the first round so it isn't just Ash using pokemon from before gen 4 besides Diantha's Gardevoir.

    I'm still happy with this episode, even though some may have thought that it was an underwhelming battle in their eyes. The reason I feel why Iron tail was the final move used, cause it's the move that Pikachu learned back in Hoenn when Ash was challenging Roxanne (All things Bright and Beautifly! was the episode). It's been a staple since that episode and it's still a staple even 20 years later.

    I know it probably would've quickly become formulaic, but I wouldn't have minded it if a few of the episodes ended with the beginning of each battle, that way the next episode could begin with someone with their back against the wall and having to battle from behind. That way each Pokémon would get a bit more time to be showcased, because realistically, each of the Pokémon featured are some of the strongest in the world. I even think showing the full 3vs3 battles isn't necessary. All I cared about during the Alan/Leon battle was seeing Charizard vs. Charizard, and I would've gladly taken the majority of an episode just seeing those two battle it out. Same with Diana and Lance.

    Professor Silver, in my humble opinion, I believe Steven not going sicko mode on Ash is a smart decision.
    If he did, the quick and nimble Pikachu and Gengar could easily find openings left by Metagross and Aggron (since Cradily was playing defensive) and exploit them to easily defeat them. As you saw in the episode itself, when Steven lets his guard down, that was the perfect oppurtunity for Ash to make his counterattack, costing Steven the match. But because Steven played defensively on all his Pokemon, this made Ash lose a lot of his momentum and struggle a lot in the battle.

    Steven 😍 And Metagross 🤍
    Honestly, I have mixed feelings about the last episode, and the last few. On one hand, I am so excited to finally see battles between the champions, the strongest trainers in the world, especially with Ash in the bracket. But I feel a bit disappointed about the writing of all of these battles. It doesn't feel as significant and meaningful as it should. I wish they were longer, more tactics were used, and it took more to take out some of the 'boss' Pokémon. I feel like Steven could have won if he was more aggressive and didn't wait for Pikachu to get up.

    While I'm glad Ash won and you like the results of how the battle played out, I think it could have played out better if Ash say, swapped out Dracovish for Lucario as it's type matchup give it a heavy advantage over Aggron. And maybe left Pikachu out for this one and used Sirfetch'd for Cradily as it too would have had an advantage. Gengar could have sized up Metagross as even though it's a steel psychic, Gengar still has an advantage with will o wisp and it's Ghost typing even though it's also a poison type and gives Steven's metagross an advantage as well. Plus Gengar can Gigantamax and Lucario can Mega Evolve. Both are just as good if not better than the Z Move.

    Will anyone see this comment? No, but am I putting this here to cope? Yes, absolutely.
    This is a joke because I’m somewhat salty Steven lost this fight despite the fact it’s actually kinda reasonable,
    but my personal headcanon is that Steven lost this battle on purpose. It’s dumb, yes, but I’m trying to cope. It was never said in Emerald that he lost to Wallace for Wallace to be champion(as far as I’m aware), so I think he gave the title of champion up for more freedom to do his rock stuff. It would be easier for him to do all of his rock stuff if he wasn’t the champion, because he HAS to be there in case someone beats the elite four, so he can fight them.
    I think winning against Ash and getting further in the thing could probably make his rock stuff a bit more difficult when he’s going to other regions for ✨rocks✨, so I’d say this was a good spot for him to get enough fame to not exactly look weak, but not seem too strong.
    From what I’ve heard(because I haven’t actually seen most of this), his Metagross survived Kyogre and landed a good few hits, and it probably would’ve beaten the heck out of Alain’s Charizard, so it’s reasonable to say he probably could’ve gotten farther if he wanted to. Also, I don’t think his Aggron should’ve gone down as easily as it should have, and Z-moves can only be used once (unless ash can somehow defy that too), so maybe if it lived through Gengar, he could’ve pulled some bs with that after Metagross lost to Ash’s Pikachu.
    Then again, this could be my personal bias towards this man speaking, Alpha Sapphire was my first game, so I have an emotional attachment to Steven at this point. Overall, I need more Steven Stone content, he needs more love, and I’m making excuses to cope with the fact he lost.
