Good list, but it broke my heart to see Obscura by Gorguts here. That album was the beginning of the mind-blowing dissonant extreme metal and bands like Imperial Triumphant, Ulcerate, Howels of Ebb, Pyrrhon, Ad Nauseam take that record as an influence. That album isn't for everyone, I agree. Not anyone can digest that dissonant, chaotic sound, but it's a fantastic piece of art that broke death metal.
It's still largely seen as a masterpiece by the Metal Community. How it was seen in this video and by that stupid-ass commenter who presented it in no way makes Gorguts' "Obscura" a shitty album.
I will have to check this out, as I was listening to "Alphaville" by Imperial Triumphant earlier today and digging it even though it is a very odd album.
That Obscura (the album) one is a very weird hot-take. That album has an impeccable, weirdly catchy and very complex structure that never deviates into "noodly" just for the sake of it or not just "thrown together", as others have pointed out, a very influential album that has inspired bands like Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant, Ad Nauseam, Portal and even Deathspell Omega.
I will never forget my disappointment when I first listened to St. Anger. I was a bright eyed high school student in the peak of my early metal listening career; obsessed with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. I was so psyched to hear Metallica had a new album and I picked it up without knowing anything about it. It felt like my dog died or something. Now that I'm older, I don't think it's the worst thing on planet Earth, but coming from Metallica it really hurt.
At least they returned to thrash with Death/Beyond Magnetic and subsequent releases (I know Death Magnetic’s mastering sucked, but the riffs and songwriting are great).
St. Anger was a “right place, right time” record for me. I was going through severe mental health crises, and the subject matter of that album pretty much saved my life.
Gotta disagree with Obscura by Gorguts, it's considered one of the most important metal albums ever for a reason. For me it trumps their follow up (From Wisdom to Hate) which had questionable production. Just my opinion. On the topic of shit albums - this is going to be a very unpopular opinion but I HATE the new Opeth album "In Cauda Venenum". I've listened to it 2-3 times and absolutely none of the ideas connect with me. The production is good but everything sounds so uninspired like they've lost their sound completely. I honestly prefer Heritage, Pale Communion (which is underrated IMO) and Sorceress to In Cauda Venenum.
@@skyline2601 the riff around the 43 minute mark is interesting and good change, but why are you not gonna play that for that long?? If ur gonna have a one hour long song, then for god's sake stretch out a good idea for a while instead of going back to the same stuff u were doing the last 40 fucking minutes
Burzum - Filosofem, although you may not like the man, but he is/was undeniably a great artist. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Filosofem are amongst the greatest black metal albums of all times. Basically, he, single handedly, invented the atmospheric black metal genre.
It's unfortunately some people can't seperate the music from the views of the artist, even though the views of the artist have nothing to do with the music. I just don't get it.
@@cavernouscarnage4526 i mean the guy is incredibly racist and homophobic and also a fucking murderer why would i want to support that by listening to it
Agreed. I love Burzum. Something calming about Burzum. Especially when im stoned out of my mind lol. Vargs views suck. His beliefs. Most of them. His goofy videos are kinda funny lol. Definitely got it right raising his family in the woods in France. Away from the BS.
Thx for being metal nerds like myself & not taking yourselves too seriously. I just discovered you last week & I’ve rediscovered some old classics & found some stuff I’ve missed somehow. Stay metal!! 🤘
You made a subscriber of me when you said “Anything Opeth has released after Ghost Reveries is doodoo... 1000% disagree.” I too think Watershed is a masterpiece, it’s good to not be alone on that subject, lol.
I own and hold dear, the Opeth albums STILL LIFE through WATERSHED. I love Opeth. I respect Opeth, they can do what they want, I dont care so much for the music of Heritage on up. That's ok, they are doing fine without my approval. But those albums I mentioned are absolutely sacred to me, a good block of quality metal.
Man this is definitely my new favorite channel, i'm so bummed i didnt find you guys till now! Youre video's are so great! Please never stop! Hope you guys are well!
On Sleep's Dopesmoker.... it really is just a zone out mood record. You put it on during a roadtrip with someone and have it creating the atmosphere in the background. It serves well in that purpose. I actually did make my own edit of DopeSmoker in ProTools where I only let each Riff Repeat twice, in some instances three times because of the incoming/outgoing riff, and it flows really nicely and is only 40 minutes long.
For me dopsmoker clicked right away but still years later every time i listen to it it just gets beter and i hear new things every time its a epic album that keeps growing =)
Metallica started with four of the greatest metal albums ever, then proceeded to drop giant turds for quite some time. I'll never understand what happened there. Death Magnetic was actually pretty good, but it took many years to get back to sounding somewhat close to the early years. Very strange.
@@jamesmiller6217 wtf are you talking it is their heaviest album, has their best solos, and has some kick ass riffs. Ajfa is amazing. Sure say what you want about no base, but the album is still great. The black album is good too, just cause it’s not thrash doesn’t mean it’s bad
James Miller ...And Justice For All is an excellent album (despite its lack of bass), but it is okay to have wrong opinions. Also, Death Magnetic, Beyond Magnetic, and Hardwired, are also great modern Metallica albums.
Deathmetal Elitist Which is probably one of the reasons as to why Catharsis is so bad, which is a shame, because Robb is a genuinely good writer of riffs and stuff.
LMFAO, my wife loves Five getting fingered Death puke. I remember when she said to me years back, "I think you'll like this band, they're pretty heavy sounding, even for your style of "Heavy Metal". I heard two tracks and the douche chills uttered my soul. Told her, you've known me for almost 15 years and i listen to bands like Exhumed etc.. , how in the hell would you think this would appeal to my tastes?" Hahaha!!
Surprised there was no mention of the "contractual obligation" Deicide albums (Insineratehymn, In Torment In Hell, Till Death Do Us Part) or Priest's Demolition. All of those are awful.
Necrotic Nick- I was surprised no one brought up those Deicide albums in particular as well. I was also surprised people didn't knock Judas Priest at all. I thought for sure Nostradamus would have shown up.
Till Death Do Us Part and Insineratehymn slap for me. I've always been a sucker for doom though, so that's probably why I liked it so much. The doom didn't feel forced either, it was like Glen layered it to give the songs a heavier impact and it just worked for me. But In Torment In Hell on the other hand... That bitch is unsalvageable.
Thanks for reading my comment and for putting on the video. Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Lets face it, there is a certain amount of pleasure people get in roasting things they dont like. 😁
My mom isn't much of a metalhead at all, but I played Opeth's Coil off of Watershed on my college radio station and she really liked that song. Coil is very sad, depressing, and very soft, but it's a fantastic song. I love the raw, rougher and heavier songs a lot, but having some slow, soft, sad and depressing songs are awesome too. It really depends on the mood I'm in. I love Opeth, but their songs are too long to be played on the radio, which sucks. That's probably my only complaint about them, but they are a great band. Great band to listen to in general, but for radio airplay, it's hard.
I don't understand that no one ever mentions Sins of Omission from Practice what you preach. Absolute banger, that album may be weaker than some other albums, but a bad album it is not.
I like Volume 8 a lot. It overstays it's welcome and should be shorter but it's got Crush, Inside Out, and Cupajoe on it and that's enough reason for me to like it. Now Stomp 442 is Anthrax's worst album. How did Danzig's Blackacidevil not end up on here.?That album is worse than St. Anger or anything else on here, and I haven't heard everything on here.
I'm happy about yall's feedback about The Hunter submission. I jumped on the Mastodon train after hearing Oblivion, bought that record immediately. I was 13 or some shit and tried to get my dad to listen to it because he's a huge ozzy and pink floyd fan, he forced me to turn it off after hearing Brent's vocals on divination. When the Hunter came out I was just disappointed because it didn't flow as good as Crack the Skye. Black Tongue was a banger when I first heard it but hearing tracks like Blasteroid turned me off because of their usage of the major scales. Thought it wasn't heavy enough. But man after coming back to them years later, those tracks are some of my favorites. I def wouldn't tell someone to listen to The Hunter before listening to Leviathan and Crack the Skye, its experimental but its a great listen after hearing both sides of the Mastodon discography.
It's kind of obscure, but IMO there is no worse metal album than 'Promise' by Massacre. It's so bad that at least one band member credited on the album refuses to acknowledge that he ever participated in it. It's a bit of a gut-punch, as this is what they followed the fantastic 'Inhuman Condition' EP with. Want to hear a death metal album so bad that even 'Illud Divinum Insanus' laughs at it? Well, here it is.
I now found out why my dad saw Kiss live. It was because one of my aunt's buddies was working at Van Andel Arena and had given out free tickets to see some of the shows that were going on at Van Andel. My aunt's co-workers wouldn't bother going to the rock concerts with her, so some of the family went along instead. It was Aunt Anita, Dad, Uncle Todd and Aunt Angie that went to see Kiss. Pretty cool for my dad to see them. I understand why he went. Kiss is a band that could perform a show. No matter if you love them or hate them, Kiss helped revolutionize the rock show experience. Oh, and on my college radio show, every time I play Kiss, I say, "Kiss of flavor!" Like the Cherry Dr Pepper that Kiss did for the Super Bowl commercial. It's hilarious. My dad likes it when I say it every time. I have to say it like that. Some people might not get it, but me and my dad do. I'm still going to say it because it's entertaining. It will never get old. I also have to say SSSLLAYYYER! It's easy to say it rather than spell it out. And I also say Rockin' with Dokken. I love all of these bands I mentioned. And I'm still gonna say them like that.
Obscura is one of the most innovative albums in the history of death metal, bands like Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant, Ad Nauseam and Portal wouldn't exist without that album, it's a masterpiece
Some fun facts about The Least Successful Human Cannonball - Original Destruction vocalist left for a while in the late 90s - The new guy wasn’t a good fit for the musical style (or at least executed his skills very poorly - Sounds like a Machine Head watered down, unfocused, metal album with migraine-inducing production - There’s moments of funk/nu metal in the musical writing, which at the bare minimum, could be intriguing but again; wasn’t executed well - The guitar tone is too abrasive and distorted, even for die hates - Lyrics is unfocused, clearly displaying that the band was struggling as a group - The band disowned the album a while ago, meaning it’s no longer considered a part of their discography. Making it the most epic of fails in the metal world.
Decided to take Nick's advice re-listen to St Anger drunk and here we are. My god the riffs sound like they were written by somebody who's only played guitar for 2 weeks and the only band they listen to is Metallica. But jesus fucking christ that unapologetically aweful snare. It hit you immediately on Frantic like PING! PING! PING! PING! Lmfao. Oh man you were right, Nick. This album really is like the Tommy Wiseau of metal albums.
I love how Nunslaughter released a CD with actual maggots imprinted into the case. All of these albums should have had the band and the producer's fecal matter imprinted into it 😂
I saw nunslaughter at Maryland deathfest (actually met nick and Jon there funny enough) and they are the epitome of mediocre. Doesn’t help that they have the absolute CRINGIEST stage presence
Hey Necrotic Nick, Jammin' Jon and Shredlord I was going to ask since you guys said that In Flames lost all hope and faith with most of their old school fan base, do you think it was when Jesper Strömblad left the band that they were going in a totally different direction? Reason why I ask is because when Jesper was in the band they put out classic killer albums from their first all the way to I would say Come Clarity. I would love to know what you guys think! I'm also currently on the hunt for their first 5 albums including their Subterranean EP. Thralls of Metal fucking rules! 🙏
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Honestly, I'm right there with you about Jesper leaving being the main reason their sound started changing dramatically. He was the old school guy and he was the main writer for years in their classic material. His style wasn't fitting the direction they were going and I think there were some other reasons for him leaving as well but when he left so did 90% of their old sound. It sucks, but unfortunately that's where we're at now.
The machine head burning read album. Listening to nothing left the opening riff. Then listen to crisis the mechanical man opening riff. Rob Flynn stole it from them. And crisis was one of the first female singer who could growl. She was like 5 foot tall with dress down to her knees. She was as cute as could be. She was also such a sweetheart. She later did an album with Ross from immolation. Karyn crisis.
I agree on the Cryptopsy album. Matt McGachy-era Cryptopsy SUCKS! The dude CONSISTENTLY unleashes low-pitched, almost deep scream-like gutturals! He can't do a proper guttural like Lord Worm!
I really, really disagree on Demonic from Testament. James Murphy is friggin' amazing and although it's deffinitely not a 'classic' Testament album, it's a pivotal moment ( some songs from the previous 'Low' too ) for the band where they fully intergrated a Death Metal approach which gave us such master pieces like 'The Gathering' and 'Dark Roots of the Earth'. Demonic has a lot of 'groove' in it too ( I wouldn't call it Groove Death/Thrash Metal, but still... ), which I really like; songs like The Burning Times, Murky Waters and/or John Doe are fan-fucking-tastic!!! Overall, as a die-hard Testament fan, it's not in my top-all-time-fave 3 albums from Testament, but deffinitely holds a solid 4th rank Also, although I really, really like Alex Skolnick, most of his soli and playstyle after he re-joined... I dunno, it kinda doesn't sit right with me, when he tries to forcefully feed us his jazzy ideas ( and I'm saying that as a Jazz fan, also have his Alex Skolnick Trio album which I dig )... Also: Yeah, the guy who put 'Practice what you Preach' must have either been a troll or an actual brainlet with no musical taste whatsoever
You brought octagon to my attention and wtf is that and what in the world happened in the recording studio? Holy hell that record is out of place and bad
I haven't heard all of Testament's Demonic. I think there were some new things in style they were trying out, and they refined them for the better on The Gathering--which I love. With Damageplan, I will admit, I was underwhelmed with the lone album. But I assumed back then, and I still stand by now, that the Abbots were just getting used to the new band as well as their new bandmates. Now that I think of it, I think they spent that first album trying to organically find the sound of their new band--remember Pantera was the only band they ever knew.
I just got back on college radio after break and decided to play music from 2004, which is one of the greatest years of all time in rock in metal, in my lifetime at least. And I decided to play Damageplan since their only album was released that year. Either or not it the album is good, I decided to play it anyway. And I did. I also did mention about Dimebag's death because that happened. Dimebag and Vinnie were moving on from Pantera and make new music with a different band, which I can't blame them. We will never know if they would ever come back together. Pantera are going up in Grand Rapids in February, but I have no interest in going because it's not Pantera with Vinnie and Dimebag.
Virtual XI is one of my favourite Maiden albums. Really enjoyed Blaze Bayley voice. I think he is very underrated. But yeah , tastes are different haha 😁
Already posted this on a more recent post but since I'm new around here gona leave it here too. This my top (or is it bottom?) 10. I just picked records from bands I like ... perhaps because they pop more to the eye. Some of the records mentioned in the clip will show up while others may be controversial. Bear in mind this is nothing more than my opinion: 10) Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark: Yes I warned this would be controversial. I concur Fear Of The Dark features some great songs like Be Quick Or Be Dead, Afraid To Shoot Strangers and the overplayed title track plus a couple other songs that are ok. But half of this thing is Maiden playing some kind of American FM radio friendly crap. Hell even a lackluster album like Virtual XI sounded overall boring but at least it sounded like Maiden. Things like From Here To Eternity, Wasting Love, Fear Is The Key, Weekend Warrior or Chains Of Misery is the band losing almost entirely its identity while sounding more than vulgar. No Prayer was a letdown for me when it came out (after an excellent record such as Seventh Son) but Fear Of The Dark managed to be an even bigger disappointment. 09/ 08) Sepultura - Roots/ Sepulnation: well I must confess that, apart from Troops of Doom I also think Morbid Visions is quite crappy as well (and a huge step down when compared with Bestial Devastation that I enjoy) but the guys were really young so they get a break. After the great Schizophrenia, the immense break through that was Beneath The Remains IMO Sepultura reached their peak in the amazing Arise when it comes to their Death/Thrash era. Then there was Chaos AD, an equally great album featuring new elements. While not losing their basis the band became more linear, more groove oriented taking some notes from Ministry and Godflesh mainly, plus adding batucada and tribal percurssion and although some purists may slander the record I hold it in high regard since it is here Sepultura ultimately reach their unique signature. So what they do next? While retaining the tribal aspect and Andreas' guitar drone jump head first in the Nu Metal bandwagon... fuck! I mean, apart from a handful of songs this is an utter Korn debut rip off. Scatting? Check. Low whispered intros? Check. Downtuned guitars with ultra minimalistic mid tempo riffs? Check. Huge disappointment to see how leaders become followers. The next album (already without Max Cavalera) was a bit less of a letdown (it featured some hardcore infused songs here and there) but still a shadow from their former selves. And then came Sepulnation. Basically Sepulnation kicks in with a semi decent Nu Metal meets Hard Core tune, followed by a Thrash Core furious uptempo in Revolt and the remainder of the album is as boring and bald as one can get. man this is the epytom of boredom, lack of coherency and vulgarity to say the least. The next record while still being far from being exciting was another step out of the slump presenting a more Thrash Core feel to it and so Sepultura slowly started to climb back to a respectable status. And if it's true they never released another album as awesome as Arise or Chaos AD, records such as Dante XXI, Kairos, The Mediator or Quadra are filled with really high quality tunes. 07) Celtic Frost - Cold lake: I simply loved when Tom and company went Goth Metal on Into The Pandemonium. I also really liked the more restrained sound of Vanity/ Nemesis (underrated as hell). Hey! Even the infamous electro prone Prototype demo album has superb moments that were later featured into the amazing come back that was Monotheist. But Celtic Frost going hard rock? Nah... plus the album sounds absolutely flat, lacking an inch of passion and intensity. Another perfect example of an absolutely futile and forgettable record... especially when it has Celtic Frost written on the cover. 06/ 05) Judas Priest - Turbo/ Demolition: Now when it comes to these two records they simply wreck my nerves. First they were follow ups to two records I reaaaally loved (Defenders of The Faith and yes, Jugulator). Then it's once again the "let's give up our identity to fit the flavor of the week" atitude that pisses me. Turbo is a blatant attempt to go radio friendly on a absurd degree. Not that Priest hadn't released more radio friendly records before (Point Of Entry comes to mind immediately) but there was still a lot of the band's DNA on many of those songs. I like Turbo Lover and to a certain degree Out In The Cold. As for the rest of the album... man... what can I say? I'm not the biggest AOR/ Hard Rock fan as you can easily deduce but man... even in that molde these tracks sound awful, just horrendous. Then there's Demolition. First of the production is utter crap. Then there are some cool tracks: Machine Man, Hell Is Home, Blood Suckers or even In Between and Devil Digger are indeed interesting. But the remainder is something that goes from absolutely forgettable tunes clad in some sort of "pseudo groove/electronic metal" layer to absolute jokes like Metal Messiah, One On One, Cyberface, Lost And Found among others. Pathetic. 04) Helloween - Chameleon: All I can listen to here is a band that lost its direction. It's not because it's poppy. Pink Bubbles was really poppy as well and I simply loved the album. But its follow up is a black hole of ideas, inspiration and excitement. If people ask me to sing one or two melodies from this record I simply can't remind it. An absolute nullity and the product of a band quickly falling apart. 03) Kreator - Endorama: Must admit I loved all the 90's experiments from the band like Renewal, Outcast and even Cause for Conflict. There are some gems out there in this more stripped down/ less thrashing version of Kreator. Loved all but one: Endorama. On Endorama the band picked every cliche from Goth Metal and called it their own. And man it sounds baaaaaaad... as bad as any goth metal band that tried to imitate either Paradise Lost or Type O Negative with the aggravating factor of this being Kreator absolutely devoid of their essence. And then they released Violent Revolution... a record so awesome that all the evil done on its predecessor was 100% forgiven. 02) In Flames - Siren Charms: I really think Reroute To Remain and Soundtrack are really cool albums and still liked some of the more mainstream pair of albums the band released after. To be Fair Sounds Of A Playground Fading was really piss poor but nothing could prepare me for what was to come next. Siren Charms lacks stamina, inspiration, ambition... well it lacks everything but sing along pop metal refrains. In all honesty I totally concur that any album after this atrocity is almost on the same trash level. But since it was the record that really made them go rock bottom it deserves to be highlighted in this list. ............... and now tied in the lowest of the lowest: 1) Metallica and Lou Reed - Lulu: Just to make some points about Metallica and St. Anger: a) I think St. Anger is an album that could be redeemed with some work (another controversial opinion). Just cut some utter stinkers like the title track, Shoot Me Again or All Within My Hands (that actually rendered a decent acoustic tune), trim lots of the useless riff repetitions on almost every song and find a producer that isn't a yes man that lets the band put that crappy sound on the final product (especially THAT SNARE). I love both Frantic (and luckily for me there's a pristine remixed version online) and The Unnamed Feeling - killer tracks. And living proof this record would be really cool if properly produced and reedited is the shorter version of Some Kind Of Monster featured in the single. The production sounds great and the song gains a lot while being almost half its original duration. b) Regarding my lower bracket when it comes to Metallica records: Reload looks like a compilation of leftovers apart from the first three songs. Then I simply detest more than half of the black album as I consider it to be the ultimate boring overproduced pop metal record (Struggle Within, Through The Never, My Friend Of Misery and Of Wolf And Man can't save it from the absolute yawn that is the remainder of the album - ok I'll give a break to Enter Sandman that seems to be a victim of overplaying) and speaking of boring and unimaginative the majority of Death Magnetic is an absolute drag (the opener is the great exception here... cool song. But just a couple more and the rest is a huge snoozefest). So, even with its huge defects St. Anger is a bit far from being the worst Metallica album in my book (controversial again, I bet). That being said none of the above compares to the clusterfuck that is Lulu. Man... I don't even know where to start and finish. Nor do I want to, since all I remember the only time I gave it a listen gives me goosebumps for being one of the most cringe moments in my life. God this thing is painful! 1) Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus: What can I say that haven't already been said? This is beyond awful.. a new word should be invented just to describe this thing. I think the album would do justice to its content if it was named solely with the last four letters of its title. Utter garbage. Well there are some not so honorable mentions like Sabbath's Never Say Die (never listened to Forbidden... some people say it's even worst), Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, Moonspell's Irreligious, Type O Negative's October Rust or Arch Enemy's Doomsday Machine (more controversial picks I know). Peace.
I really enjoyed this video, some of these albums are horrific to listen to. I would also add the following: Slayer - Diabolus in Musica (So monotonous and one-dimensional, it's basically Slayer trying to get on the nu-metal bandwagon) Black Sabbath - Never Say Die! (The band all doing cocaine around the clock and basically not giving a damn at this point) Judas Priest - Demolition (I get that the band were trying to do something different, but come on!!) Judas Priest - Point of Entry (Its very existence is pointless and the tracklisting is substandard at best) Dio - Strange Highways (just as forgettable as Angry Machines) Anything released by Poison (This goes without saying) Dream Theater - The Astonishing (It's over 2 hours of mostly piano ballads, pass!) Iron Maiden - No Prayer For The Dying (not their worst, but it still sucks)
I disagree. Point of Entry, Strange Highways and Never Say Die! Are great albums in their own right. Some Killer stuff on those albums, like: Point of Entry - Heading out the Highway, Hot Rockin’, Desert Plains, Solar Angels, etc. Never Say Die! - Title track, Johnny Blade, Junior’s Eyes, Shockwave, Etc. Strange Highways - Title Track, Bring Down the Rain, Pain, Give Her the Gun, etc. Underrated/Misunderstood in their respective Discographies.
Nice Master shirt. My dad opened for them and Abomination a couple times. Paul Speckmann ate dinner at my grandmas house and went fishing with my dad. 😂😂 I got ahold of him on Myspace when Myspace was still a thing and he remembered my dad and thought I was one of my half brothers.
Endorama - Give it a chance again, Demonic is very death metal but still good, early Testament could have a little bit more dynamic sound but they are still very good albums.
I know exactly what you mean. I personally cant stand what passes for metalcore these days which is basically watered down melodeth mixed with emo. The only metalcore band I have stuff from is Parkway Drive, but its only their two most recent albums which have drifted further away from metalcore. Ironically, most metalcore fans seem to like those albums the least, lol.
Damn, missed the boat on this video. I'd like to put forward Vanilla Ice's 'Hard to Swallow' - even Fred Durst wasn't that cheesy or irritating. Nu-metal produced some absolute arse, but this was one giant sea of bullshit! Great band tees all round, boys!
The album mentioned that I disagree with the most is Super Collider. I bought it when it first came out and I wore it out on repeat for weeks. It's my favorite album by Megadeth since The System Has Failed.
I don't remember if I had put in my two cents the first time I watched this episode but Desultory's Swallow the Snake was a huge disappointment the first time I listened to it which was when it was first released. I worked at a college radio station at the time and I had a death metal show. I played their previous material all the time but I think I aired this album once and that was it.
I personally think Impact is Imminent is Exodus' second best album. (First being fabulous disaster) and I do agree that force of habit is one of their worst, I still love it. Exodus is a very consistent band and I consider all of their albums to be great.
The guy on the right is wrong about the Paul Stanley solo album. Paul's solo album is actually very highly regarded and in some polls, even tops Ace's.
I don’t think Peter’s was bad either, it was a decent disco album with some rockers on there. Gene Simmons’ certainly the worst, but I appreciated some moments on there, with it having a more disco/funk flavour to a couple of the songs.
I agree with all these, except I kind of like Load and that Damageplan album isn't too bad (not that good either). I like Demonic and I still really like the Burning Red. With Filosofem, I totally understand why people don't like it, but for me absolutely hypnotizing.
So... the fact that ANYONE with ANY kind of musical sense even considers Korn anything other than a festering mound of poop... WOW!!! Although these albums have already been mentioned... MAN do they suck!!! 1. Judas Priest - 'Demolition' 2. Iron Maiden - 'Virtual XI' 3. Deicide - 'In Torment In Hell' 4. Morgoth - 'Feel Sorry For The Fanatic' 5. Kreator - 'Endorama' / 'Renewal' (tie)
I was shocked to see the Gorguts album on here and was even more shocked everyone agreed. It's crazy and there all a couple sloppy moments but their riffs are so strange and cool sounding. I always thought everyone loved that album.
Bad albums of the last 5 yrs Machine Head : Catharsis Ministry: Amerikkkant Suicide Silence: ST Danzig: Black Laden Crown The New Ozzy: 1 or 2 decent songs at best
I know right, I love dime but damn... what a missed opportunity. It’s always sad to think that was the last album with dime on it, I bet damageplan could’ve changed so much after that.
Damageplan was irredeemably horrendous. That it was two of the most distinctive players in metal, yet I could not tell it was even the Abbott brothers on there, if someone didnt tell me. I play that POS once in a while to see if I just didnt pick up on something, but nope, It sucks. I would have loved to ask Dime or Vinny what in the hell was going on with that, but I know there was a lot of vulnerable emotions at that time. I saw Pantera a few times in the 90's. Love them, have gratitude that they proudly flew the flag and toured the world when media did nothing bit shit on metal. Maybe the next Damageplan would have been a banger? We will never know. Six Feet Under cover albums are awesome, and Danzigs cover album although pretty bad, had " Devils Angels" and maybe one other good song on it. Not total shit.
If you had to choose between Load or St Anger though...... (ouch that hurt, sorry). One has pretty decent production with terrible songs. The other has a couple decent grooves with terrible production. Oof, tough.
Man, I enjoyed the experimentation of the untitled Korn album. ST Anger is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but in saying that I will never listen to the whole thing in one sitting. For some reason that I can’t explain I’m a life long SFU fan, and I don’t think that will change, BUUUUUUUUUT I’ve never liked any of the Graveyard Classics
Necrotic Nick- I actually found it in an antique store here in Toledo. It was just in a bin of other promo posters so I snagged it. They only wanted a dollar for it too which was pretty awesome. I honestly have no idea where to look for one though but I'd say hit up some antique stores and see if you get lucky.
@@thrallsofmetal What??? $1.00??? Duuuuude!!! That's a huge score man!! I've paid $30.00 just for a 3"x5" Legion-era Roadrunner promo photo -ha . I don't know man...antique stores around here (Central Illinois) would likely not even accept an item like that -haha (my parents are big on antiques so I am quite familiar with antique scene here...strangely). I peruse through Ebay pretty often...got a rare Grave 'Soulless' poster from 1994 last week!! Yeah man...that Deicide poster is probably worth $75.00 easy!! Once Upon The Cross has been out of print for decades...so anything from that era is pretty collectable these days. I would try to get it signed someday...I love that era of Deicide (was the first album I heard back in the summer of 1996 when I was 13 years old!!). -Devon
Suicidal Tendencies - Freedumb...anything after Rocky left Sepultura -A Lex...anything after Max left Exodus- Shovel Full of Shit Machine, both Atrocity albums Slayer - Diabolus In Musica, Repentless Flotsam and Jetsam - No Place for Remakes 2014
Shovel Headed Kill Machine is great, it is an awesome album of brutal thrash, even though it was made during some rough times for Exodus, and the two Atrocity albums are also great. Also, Sepultura’s three most recent albums are awesome.
29:13 - Lmao! How I have basically felt about Kiss since I was old enough to form a real opinion of them as an adult. I still to this day don't understand how musicians with 10 thousand times the talent of Kiss site them as one of their favorite bands.
I want to hear a re-recording of St. Anger with Chris Barnes as the vocalist.
😂😂😂 That'll be the highlight of the year.
Whyeeeeeeeeeeeeee would you want theeeeeeeeeeeet? 😄😄😄🤣
Chris would have to fight with Lars snare drum for MVP.
That would be a,masterpiece......of shit
Hammer smashed St.Anger :D
I want a re-recording of St. Anger with Chris Barnes as the snare drum.
Nah, it's trash. Literally a bunch of noise.
@@cristianlugano2156 if you have it muted mabye
I was so relieved when they disagreed that Obsura is bad
That Obscura (the album) one is a very weird hot-take.
That album has an impeccable, weirdly catchy and very complex structure that never deviates into "noodly" just for the sake of it or not just "thrown together", as others have pointed out, a very influential album that has inspired bands like Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant, Ad Nauseam, Portal and even Deathspell Omega.
It's divisive. You love it or hate it.
Yeah they missed the mark on that one, and Dopesmoker
Ranking Cold Lake ahead of To Mega Therion is, in my humble opinion, an irreparable credibility destroyer.
Jon has the worst takes (altars of madness at number six)
I will never forget my disappointment when I first listened to St. Anger. I was a bright eyed high school student in the peak of my early metal listening career; obsessed with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. I was so psyched to hear Metallica had a new album and I picked it up without knowing anything about it. It felt like my dog died or something. Now that I'm older, I don't think it's the worst thing on planet Earth, but coming from Metallica it really hurt.
I understand.
At least they returned to thrash with Death/Beyond Magnetic and subsequent releases (I know Death Magnetic’s mastering sucked, but the riffs and songwriting are great).
What do you think about their last two albums?
KirbyLiterallySucks I really liked them.
if u haven't heard it yet I recommend Testament - the new order- a must on your collection
Practice What You Preach is great. Deserves zero hate.
Totally that is the album that introduced me to testament. There’s not a weak link on the album
Its Alex Skolnicks favorite Testament album.
Yeah its a good album
Anthrax is overrated
@@eclatshwartzbaumcybertune2063 lol what does that have to do with anything? Also amount the living and spreading the disease are great albums imo
Earthly love is on of the greatest Metal songs ever
I used to hate Obscura but now I adore it
Anyone who says Dopesmoker is just one riff has clearly never listened to it.
I listened to small increments of Dope smoker and heard a couple riffs in there
I listened to like 3/4 of it until I just couldn't take it anymore. Minor variety here and there, sure, but it's too boring imo.

@@cavernouscarnage4526 i mean the guy is incredibly racist and homophobic and also a fucking murderer why would i want to support that by listening to it
I used to watch Varg's channel, Thulean Perspective on YT. His views never made it into Burzum. He is an intelligent, unique musical artist
@@cavernouscarnage4526 his folk shit is better. Lol
"Torment" by Six Feet Under is almost as bad as "Nightmares of the Decomposed". You guys' review of that album was awesome btw!
The ones by Warning, Sleep and Gorguts may not be for everyone but they are not bad at all
The snare on St. Anger would sound great if Metallica was a goregrind band.
Demonic from Testament is fucking AWESOME, THE BURNING TIMES 🔥
VIRTUAL 11. Not 9. XI is Roman numeral for 11. And the fact it was their 11th studio album is a huge hint.
Futureal and worlds collied are great tracks.
Thank you. 🤣🤣
people have said 9 so much that i honestly had forgotten what the correct title was lol
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We appreciate that!
I had the CD for years before I got into it, then it clicked. Dopesmoker kicks ass
For me dopsmoker clicked right away but still years later every time i listen to it it just gets beter and i hear new things every time its a epic album that keeps growing =)
It's funny I literally just commented that they should put it on during a road trip to experience the trance it can create.
Who tf puts Five Finger Death Punch on a metal conversation??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bad metal exists man, as far as all the "metal" on the radio, FFDP is heavier than a lot. They still gay lmao
Metallica started with four of the greatest metal albums ever, then proceeded to drop giant turds for quite some time. I'll never understand what happened there. Death Magnetic was actually pretty good, but it took many years to get back to sounding somewhat close to the early years. Very strange.
AJFA sucked, and everything else after that blew.
Cliff died. Changed everything.
That's what happens when you find Jesus, you make bad music. Ask Megadeth
James Miller ...And Justice For All is an excellent album (despite its lack of bass), but it is okay to have wrong opinions. Also, Death Magnetic, Beyond Magnetic, and Hardwired, are also great modern Metallica albums.
BackAcidEvil by Danzig is pretty rough too. It was clear he wanted to do a NIN type of album, but it just did not translate well.
Catharsis by Machine Head is so bad it was almost like they were trying to record the biggest piece of manure ever.
It sounds like a Robb Flynn solo record.
@@zombiematt2006 the rest of the band had hardly any input
Deathmetal Elitist Which is probably one of the reasons as to why Catharsis is so bad, which is a shame, because Robb is a genuinely good writer of riffs and stuff.
@@asmodai2025 yeah
I think Supercharger is even worse...
Really surprised to see Obscura (the album, not the band) being shat on by death metal veterans, its a dissodeath classic.
Endorama by Kreator is not bad music. The problem is... it's too far from what Kreator is. It's more a rock album than anything else.
You may add RENEWAL also, of course
I actually really enjoyed renewal and endorama.
I like both Vol. 8 and Stomp 442, but they are the least in the discography of the band
I will stand by the Damage Plan album till the day I die has some absolute bangers on there
It's kind of obscure, but IMO there is no worse metal album than 'Promise' by Massacre.

Some fun facts about The Least Successful Human Cannonball
- Original Destruction vocalist left for a while in the late 90s
- The new guy wasn’t a good fit for the musical style (or at least executed his skills very poorly
- Sounds like a Machine Head watered down, unfocused, metal album with migraine-inducing production
- There’s moments of funk/nu metal in the musical writing, which at the bare minimum, could be intriguing but again; wasn’t executed well
- The guitar tone is too abrasive and distorted, even for die hates
- Lyrics is unfocused, clearly displaying that the band was struggling as a group
- The band disowned the album a while ago, meaning it’s no longer considered a part of their discography. Making it the most epic of fails in the metal world.
I think the two eps before that album were way worse.
Lol Obscura and Dopesmoker are among my alltime favourites.
Same both 10/10 =)
Obscura and Beyond creation are amazing
Cold Lake actually had some groove oriented riffs
Isn't it Iron Maiden's 11, not 9? Also, Megadeth's Risk makes me sad. Oh, and the first few Mayhem albums are bags.
Spencer Grady yes, it’s Virtual Eleven.
I have to say, albeit a big influence on my love for this band, revisiting Soulfly's: primitive album is fucking awwwwwwwful
Sleep's Dopesmoker is hardly just "one riff." WTF?!
My addition here:
Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King
Absolutely disagree about Gorguts - Obscura, Mastodon - Hunter and Cynic - Focus.
Overall, as a die-hard Testament fan, it's not in my top-all-time-fave 3 albums from Testament, but deffinitely holds a solid 4th rank
Also, although I really, really like Alex Skolnick, most of his soli and playstyle after he re-joined...
I'm just glad someone on this panel likes Cold Lake🙂
I'd rather listen to st. Anger than Catharsis by Machine Head.
In Flames lost me after Sound Of A Playground...I agree with pretty much everything so far.
same, and i was alreay not a fan of a sense of purpose... playground fading was a bit better, but after that man...
Playground fading is the only one i have. Honestly i loved it front to back.
Virtual XI is one of my favourite Maiden albums. Really enjoyed Blaze Bayley voice. I think he is very underrated. But yeah , tastes are different haha 😁
Futureal
I agree
Demolition Hammer- Time Bomb is awesome. I love that album. But I'm a big groove metal fan
Already posted this on a more recent post but since I'm new around here gona leave it here too. This my top (or is it bottom?) 10. I just picked records from bands I like ... perhaps because they pop more to the eye. Some of the records mentioned in the clip will show up while others may be controversial. Bear in mind this is nothing more than my opinion:
10) Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark: Yes I warned this would be controversial.
But since it was the record that really made them go rock bottom it deserves to be highlighted in this list.
............... and now tied in the lowest of the lowest:
1) Metallica and Lou Reed - Lulu: Just to make some points about Metallica and St.
Peace.
Forbidden is pretty good, go listen to it
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 no, thanks :P
I agree, Celtic Frost Cold Lake is the worst thing they could have put out and should been burned
dopesmoker is great, but you guys arent ready yet
This really needs a part 2!
I really enjoyed this video, some of these albums are horrific to listen to. I would also add the following:
Slayer - Diabolus in Musica (So monotonous and one-dimensional, it's basically Slayer trying to get on the nu-metal bandwagon)
Black Sabbath - Never Say Die! (The band all doing cocaine around the clock and basically not giving a damn at this point)
Judas Priest - Demolition (I get that the band were trying to do something different, but come on!!)
Judas Priest - Point of Entry (Its very existence is pointless and the tracklisting is substandard at best)
Dio - Strange Highways (just as forgettable as Angry Machines)
Anything released by Poison (This goes without saying)
Dream Theater - The Astonishing (It's over 2 hours of mostly piano ballads, pass!)
Iron Maiden - No Prayer For The Dying (not their worst, but it still sucks)
I disagree. Point of Entry, Strange Highways and Never Say Die! Are great albums in their own right. Some Killer stuff on those albums, like:
Point of Entry - Heading out the Highway, Hot Rockin’, Desert Plains, Solar Angels, etc.
Never Say Die! - Title track, Johnny Blade, Junior’s Eyes, Shockwave, Etc.
Strange Highways - Title Track, Bring Down the Rain, Pain, Give Her the Gun, etc.
Underrated/Misunderstood in their respective Discographies.
Ad a huge Dio fan, I have to disagree with Strange Highways being forgettable. It was way better than Master of the Moon.
Slayers album was still better than anthrax, Metallica and Megadeth material at the time
Hmm, I'd probably lean more towards Megadeth in that regard.
Harry Beynon Metallica for me
Nice Master shirt.
I think the instrumentation for Catharsis by Machine Head was cool, but the vocals completely ruin it.
i like st anger and not afraid to say it
Necrotic Nick- I can't. My body naturally rejects it. lol
Kudos on the Conjurer shirt. Great guys who live close to me. Played with them and Conan about two years ago.
For me, almost any metalcore album from any band. Hearing almost every vocalist hit boy band cleans just makes me turn it off immediately.
Shadows Fall is awesome
Couldn't agree more, God Forbid also one of my favorites.
I don't mind stuff like Shadows Fall and All That Remains. Probably because there's actually some decent riffage.
I agree! That is why i hate those.
i will not forgive you. you made me discover that morbid angel album. now i can't unhear those ten minutes.
Necrotic Nick- I still have my copy of Hard to Swallow. lol. It's just as bad as I remembered it.
Obscura and dopesmoker are both 10/10 masterpices of metal. =)
I know I'm late to the party but I'm very surprised to NOT see Deicide's Insineratehymn and In Torment in Hell on this list 🤣
The album mentioned that I disagree with the most is Super Collider. I bought it when it first came out and I wore it out on repeat for weeks. It's my favorite album by Megadeth since The System Has Failed.
Obscura is the best Gorguts. What the hell. 😂 Good call on Gutvoid though.
St. Anger isn’t really as bad as people say it is, it’s an acquired taste sure, but it’s not awful if you understand it more
I revisited it about a year ago to see if it was as bad as i remembered, it was worse.
@@UroboricNate yeah it is but Dirty Window and Sweet Amber are pretty good as songs so I like the live versions and whatnot
I personally think Impact is Imminent is Exodus' second best album. (First being fabulous disaster) and I do agree that force of habit is one of their worst, I still love it. Exodus is a very consistent band and I consider all of their albums to be great.
Obscura and Dopesmoker noooo, I fuckin love those albums!
filosofem is also there, that album literally inspired me to pick up the guitar and start making music
I loved Anthrax Vol. 8. Also Practice what you Preach.
Am I the only person who likes Demo Hammers Time Bomb?! I mean I’ll take it over half the other shit that was listed here any day of the week! 😂
It was the first Demolition Hammer I'd ever heard. I've liked it since the early 90s
I don’t like load, reload, and st anger. I would also like add black album to the list. I do like some songs though.
So... the fact that ANYONE with ANY kind of musical sense even considers Korn anything other than a festering mound of poop... WOW!!!
Although these albums have already been mentioned... MAN do they suck!!!
1. Judas Priest - 'Demolition'
2. Iron Maiden - 'Virtual XI'
3. Deicide - 'In Torment In Hell'
4. Morgoth - 'Feel Sorry For The Fanatic'
Oh poor Cliff Burton lol. What would think of St Anger 🤦🏻♀. He never have it. I feel like once Cliff died. The thrash died.
I wish Metallica would produce an album that sounded like Garage Days.....that album sounds fantastic.....I can hear all players and even bass.
Bad albums of the last 5 yrs
Machine Head : Catharsis
Ministry: Amerikkkant
Suicide Silence: ST
Danzig: Black Laden Crown
The New Ozzy: 1 or 2 decent songs at best
Seth Hansen Ordinary Man’s one of the best albums of the last 5 years. No bad songs on there.
@@simplebutnotsolongname6642 That album is so uninspired it’s just hopping in trends. New Ozzy sucks.
God that Suicide Silence self titled is HORRIBLE. They died when Mitch died and I’m a massive fan. Eddie Hermida is doing them a disservice
I threw damageplan in the trash after I listened to it the first time. Only time I've done that instead of donating or selling a bad album.
Review the band, Swallow The Sun". Their album "When A Shadow Is Forced Into The Light."
Hey guys how would a band get your attention for an album or video review/reaction?
If you had to choose between Load or St Anger though...... (ouch that hurt, sorry). One has pretty decent production with terrible songs. The other has a couple decent grooves with terrible production. Oof, tough.
Man, I enjoyed the experimentation of the untitled Korn album. ST Anger is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but in saying that I will never listen to the whole thing in one sitting. For some reason that I can’t explain I’m a life long SFU fan, and I don’t think that will change, BUUUUUUUUUT I’ve never liked any of the Graveyard Classics
I've always wondered if Media Play went under because they had to buy back all those copies of St. Anger.
Hey Nick!! What's the story on the framed Deicide 'Once Upon The Cross' era promo photo/poster? Very cool item!!
Where/when did you find it??? I collect early death metal promotional items...never seen that one before.
-Devon
Hard disagree on Obscura, Filosofem and Dopesmoker. All great albums. Especially, Obscura.
Yep 100% =)
Suicidal Tendencies - Freedumb...anything after Rocky left
Sepultura -A Lex...anything after Max left
Exodus- Shovel Full of Shit Machine, both Atrocity albums
Slayer - Diabolus In Musica, Repentless
Flotsam and Jetsam - No Place for Remakes 2014
Dethamphetamine off of Shovel headed rips tho.
Shovel Headed Kill Machine is great, it is an awesome album of brutal thrash, even though it was made during some rough times for Exodus, and the two Atrocity albums are also great. Also, Sepultura’s three most recent albums are awesome.
Oh, and most of the recent Ministry material is pretty woeful
Necrotic Nick- That last Ministry is their worst in my opinion.
Ministry most underated album is filth pig is probably the one i can listen too the most
this is true unfortunately
Psalm 69 is a banger tho
29:13 - Lmao! How I have basically felt about Kiss since I was old enough to form a real opinion of them as an adult. I still to this day don't understand how musicians with 10 thousand times the talent of Kiss site them as one of their favorite bands.
