My ten best album thrash -metal: 1.Metallica-Master of Puppetts 2.Slayer-Season in The Abyss 3.Annihilator-Never,Neverland 4.Megadeth-Rust in Peace 5.Coroner-Mental Vortex 6.Sepultura-Arise 7.Artillery-By Inheritance 8.Testament-Legacy 9.Overkill-Horrorscope 10.Acid Drinkers-Acidofilia
You know your stuff! This is one of the few top 10s that I did not find myself disagreeing with at all. Thrash newbies would do well to check out all of these albums, including the honorable mentions like Death Angel, Vio-lence, Sepultura (which really is a top 10 band as well), Nuclear Assault, etc
You know what Pete Pardo ...even though I'm not a newbie these lists are cool cause there is stuff out there that never made my Playlist fos one reason or another like sodom...that was killer and I didn't know...thanks pete
4:13 Before I see Pete's list, I'll do mine (only one LP per band): 10. Kreator - Pleasure to Kill (1986) 9. Dark Angel - Darkness Descends (1986) 8. Sepultura - Beneath the Remains (1989) 7. Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver (1986) 6. Exodus - Bonded By Blood (1985) 5. Testament - The Legacy (1987) 4. Anthrax - Spreading the Disease (1985) 3. Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990) 2. Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984) 1. Slayer - Reign In Blood (1986)
Yes! The 2004 remix sucks, go for the original 1990 CD. The remix changes some of the vocals and lyrics especially on Take No Prisoners and Five Magics.
You didn’t see them with Menza and Friedman then, or Poland and Samuelson. Even accounting for it being one bad night, you saw them over 20 years in, not one of the classic line ups. Invalid opinion.
The 5 albums that came to mind first - IF I had to narrow it down - were "Kill 'Em All" by Metallica, "Taking Over" by Overkill, "The Ultra Violence" by Death Angel, "Reign in Blood" by Slayer, and "Darkness Descends" by Dark Angel. Obviously, there are several more, but those 5 are always at the top of the thrash heap for me.
In no particular order 1. Bonded By Blood-Exodus. 2. Reign In Blood-Slayer. 3. Kill Em All-Metallica. 4. Rust In Peace-Megadeth. 5. Beneath The Remains-Sepultura. 6. The Years Of Decay-Overkill. 7. Alice In Hell-Annihalator. 8. Darkness Descends-Dark Angel. 9. Submission For Liberty-4ARM. 10. Cowboys From Hell-Pantera
I just listened to Darkness Descends last night, i'm 54 and still love it. I never actually owned the album because my brother had it and played it 24/7, so it's also kind of nostalgic, haha. Keep up the good work Pete.
Most people that listen to thrash are in their 50's and 60's, even their 70's. It all happened 40 years ago. It's like someone in the 1980's enjoying music from the forties.
So friggin' heavy! I went to grade school with Dark Angel guitarist Eric Meyer, he's an awesome, humble dude and a helluva friend! So damn proud of him - good guy wins!
So true, it seems crazy that thrash classics sound just as good to my 61 year old ears as they did 40 yrs. ago! Now I just make sure to wear a kidney belt and Helmut when cranking the stuff - health is everything!
This video made me smile. The list and the honorable mentions just took me back to my teenage years. I'm 50 now and Thrash is still my favourite sub-genre of metal. And I'm proud to say I own every single album you mentioned.
Here are my top recommendations for beginners: 1. Flotsam And Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deceiver (Very good vocals great for beginners to the genre) 2. Anthrax - Spreading The Disease (Great vocals too good for beginners) 3. Artillery - By Inheritance (Super vocals again) Start with these 3 first if you can't get past the harsher vocals. 4. Metallica - Master Of Puppets 5. Megadeth - Rust In Peace 6. Slayer - Show No Mercy 7. Testament - The Legacy 8. Annihilator - Alice In Hell 9. Exodus - Bounded By Blood 10. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Never forget hearing Kill 'Em All for the first time, i had just finished putting in a new car stereo in my Datsun pick up truck, which had a shell on the back and a carpet kit. I put house speakers back there, had a powerful amp and was now living the good life! A friend, " heavy metal Bob" who became pretty famous in the metal scene, had hipped me to Riot, Saxon, Armoured Saint and others, told me i had to get this album by Metallica (i thought the name was ridiculous!) so i picked it up and couldnt fathom how fast, relentless and uncompromising it was, the ten ton, granite riffs literally exploding from the sweaty speakers! I thought i was Mr. Heavy Metal, and then realizing AC/DC, Scorps and UFO, Sabbath and Ted Nugent, while still killer, were joined by a collosal behemoth spraying out wattage with seriously dangerous intentions! I was laughing upon first listen, Four Horsemen, Seek And Destroy, Motorbreath and Whiplash giving me an intense high, a huge burst of adrenaline. Played it for my stoner metal buddies, while we were burning some green in the back of my truck, house speakers ready for punishment, and all I saw were looks of complete astonishment, heard the words "no fucking way" over and over again, and then nothing but huge grins! It changed our musical lives, we didnt know this kind of speed and power was even possible, and in fact, a buddy commented that the sonics weren't real, he thought they had to be using special effects or something😁! I thank Heavy Metal Bob for his astute knowledge of all things metal - RIP BOB NALBANIAN.
I'm not necessarily doing just one album per band, because that's not what hooked me on thrash! In no particular order: 1. Megadeth - Peace Sells But Who's Buying 2. Anthrax - State of Euphoria 3. Metallica - Master of Puppets 4. Slayer - South of Heaven 5. Slayer - Reign in Blood 6. Megadeth - Rust in Peace 7. Heathen - Victims of Deception 8. Overkill - The Years of Decay 9. Exodus - Fabulous Disaster 10. Tankard - Stone Cold Sober
That Heathen album is unstoppable, they never equaled it. Surprised to see State Of Euphoria on here, but i like it, it does get a lot of criticism, then again, I like ALL things Anthrax does! Scott's a riff king! Great choices.
@@treff9226 State of Euphoria is a personal fave of mine, overshadowed by Among the Living and Persistence of Time. I find it has incredibly strong songwriting and catchy melodies from Joey, so to me, why not start there with Anthrax and save the others for after 🤔
Makes sense to me, more listener friendly, it goes down easier! It seems people get caught up in the seriousness of hard hitting metal, groups like Anthrax have always shown an ability to display serious music chops while also having a laugh along the way! And why not, they're loving what they get to do for a living and not taking themselves too seriously. Humor is always welcome in this too often, uptight world!@@mikemars2112
For people who want straight forward easy listening thrash: 1. Metallica: Master of Puppets 2. Testament: The New Order 3. Megadeth: Peace Sells but Who"s Buying 4. Overkill: Taking Over For people who want to try something more extreme: 5. Dark Angel: Darkness Descends 6. Slayer: Reign in Blood 7. Sepultura: Beneath the Remains 8. Kreator: Extreme Agression For People who like technical/progressive playing 9. Annihilator: Alice in Hell 10. Coroner: Punishment for Decadence If you are coming from punk here are some honorable: Nuclear Assult: Survive Carnivore: Retaliation Cromags: Best Wishes DRI: Crossover Side note: This is quite the hot take but I would replace Rust in Peace with Peace Sells. Dave's vocals are at the most nasally on Rust which I hate, and the riffs and tone aren't as crushing as on Peace Sells. I also felt like Chris Poland's solos and style fit way better with Megadeth.
Nice breakdown of different forms of thrash! Picking between Peace Sells and Rust In Peace is like choosing a favorite child! I hear you on the raw, blistering tones on Peace', but Rust' is really the ceiling for state of the art thrash. Poland was incredibly unique, almost jazzy, Friedman is simply FILTHY!
@@treff9226 Poland was absolutely jazzy, idk if you’ve heard some of the actual fusion stuff he’s done, but it’s great. He’s got that fluid Holdsworth legato but has his own bluesy thing he throws in there, not to mention the crazy semitone bending stuff he does. Both Poland and Friedman are incredibly unique but personally I prefer Friedman’s playing outside of the constraints of Dave. That being said he steals the show in literally every song on Rust in Peace.
@@Cam-uv5scfor sure, I need to check out Polands fusion material, I loved that Damn The Machine album he did after Megadeth! Chris is unique unto himself, not an easy thing to do in the vast music world!
@@kurtaugustus1767To my ears, they haven't made a bad album! Never forget hearing The Ultra Violence for first time and then seeing the band members were still in grade school.....well, not quite, but their musicianship was mind blowing, considering how young they were! They've been through some tragedy, but came out ahead and continue to drop top tier album after album. 🤘
For those going to thrash metal from prog and jazz rock, not from classic HMR, I would recommend Coroner "Mental Vortex' and Mekong Delta "Kaleidoscope"
this episode makes me yearn for a show on "obscure" 80's thrash bands...perhaps not "obscure" with "true" thrash fans, but some of those gems from that era...this show made me go back into my collection and re-listen to some of those releases...Iron Cross...Vacant Grave...Black Shepherd...Kublai Khan...Sonick Plague...Morbid Saint...Wrath...Flames...Morsure...Exumer...lots of bands that were just "one and done," but the limited output was just so cool. And speaking of Morbid Saint, they have a new one, released this year...it's pretty damn brutal. And of course there's Agent Steel...Acrophet...Atrophy...Cyclone...Sentinel Beast...Razor...Sacred Reich...I was what I considered the "perfect age" to be a thrash fan...I was buying all this stuff when it was "new" and "exciting," fascinated by the direction that "metal" was going...however, in the beginning of the 90s, being me, I found bands that were "pushing the envelope" even further in the burgeoning death metal scene, so I left thrash behind in favor of those much heavier death metal bands...but, yeah...an elongated (don't skimp us, Pete!) "obscure/underground/under-noticed" 80s thrash show would be excellent. At least an hour...and, please...NO co-host...unless you trust me to sit in the co-captain chair, that is...:0)
Patrick - blasted Morbid Saint's classic Spectrum Of Death album all day yesterday! Damn it's incredible, so fierce and uncompromising, dig the thrash sound with death metal vocals! I got to get their new release, NOW!
As an 80s kid who was called a "armpit headbanger" by a teacher in high school, I absolutely love thrash metal! People have asked me for suggestions to experience thrash metal, and my 1st recommendation is usually MegadetH's "Rust In Peace. I alsos recommend either "Reign In Blood" or "Seasons In the Abyss" my Slayer. I also LOVE Testament, Exodus, and Overkill.
Great calls, tbh. I love that he mentioned it. Arise was a fucking revelation when i first heard it as a newbie 90's teen. I still think they're underrated. I suppose they are just considered more of a death/thrash hybrid? Especially considering their 1st 3 albums. i mean it was just so much heavier.
Can't ever get tired of Rocky laying waste to the planet while wearing that ever present Pittsburgh Pirates cap! Credit Suicidal for moving their sound forward, getting reeeeeel heavy and coming up with a totally unique take on thrash! "Send me your money!"
Thrash beginners should: Make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in the fully upright and locked positions. Know where your oxygen masks are located. Be aware of all emergency exits. A neck brace, or two, makes good sense. Thrash music kills less people than auto accidents.
I wish I could relive the first time I heard thrash metal (Ride the Lightning) after that I realized that there was more to music than I have ever thought. Huge thrash/death metal fan now
I understand that Celtic Frost aren't exclusively Thrash, but where other would (will) you put them? To Mega Therion is an absolute Thrash Classic (and so much more). Cheers
I'd say Morbid Tales has way more thrash elements than To Mega Therion. CF in general are very influential to thrash and extreme metal, just like Venom, Mercyful Fate, and Motorhead, but wouldn't call any of them a thrash band per se.
@@seaoftranquilityprog You're right. I never think of Morbid Tales as an album but it certainly is highly influencial. I really hope that one day you' ll get to do an interview with the amazing Reed St Mark for the channel. Cheers.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Yes, that's why I mention it. I didn't know (or remember) he already appeared on the channel, but it would be awesome to hear from him again. He hasn't been the most productive musician, but the quality of his discography is impressive to say the least. Really miss his playing...
1. Slayer "Reign In Blood" 2. Sodom "Agent Orange" 3. Metallica "Master Of Puppets" 4. Anthrax "Among the Living" 5. Death Angel "Frolic Through The Park" 6. Overkill "Taking Over" 7. Megadeth "Rust In Peace" 8. Exodus "Bonded By Blood" 9. Testament "Titans Of Creation" (wanted to name a newer one by a legendary band) 10. Destruction "The Antichrist"
My list would be: Metallica - Master of Puppets Megadeth - Rust in Peace Slayer - Reign in Blood Anthrax - Among the Living Sodom - Agent Orange Kreator - Pleasure to Kill Destruction - Infernal Overkill Sepultura - Arise Overkill - The Years of Decay Dark Angel - Darkness Descends.
Thrash Metal is my favorite genre of metal, so this one is very special to me... with that said, I'm going to order these, not by year, but by accessibility for a newcomer (in my opinion) #1 - Kill 'Em All: Metallica The birth of Thrash to the wider audience, combining New Wave Of British Heavy Metal with Punk attitude, legends were born. It's accesible, fast and heavy while not being a deterrent to newcomers. Seek & Destroy, The Four Horsemen and Whiplash are Thrash at it's core. #2 - Rust In Peace: Megadeth From the opening riff of Holy Wars, this album is destined for greatness. Arguably one of the most iconic guitar riffs of all-time, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson and Nick Menza made magic on this record. Flawless, and I cannot praise this record enough, it's so good, it transcends sub-genres. #3 - The New Order: Testament This is one of the albums that solidified my love for Thrash metal, the vocal melodies and choruses... catchy riffs, leads, phenomenal drumming, basswork, finished with great mixing and production. This is a MUST LISTEN for someone wanting to get into Thrash. #4 - State of Euphoria: Anthrax Fun, bounce-riff laden, goofy and unserious, tye-dye "pizza thrash" (fun, party stuff) Anti-Social is the most fun song that Thrash has Thrashed. #5 - Fabolous Disaster: Exodus The true innovators of the Thrash Metal scene in the San Francisco Bay Area, Exodus created great chanting choruses with Toxic Waltz, Fabolous Disaster... and a cover of Low Rider? It's just a fun time all the way through, have at it! #6 - Cowboys From Hell: Pantera Cowboys From Hell, Domination, The Art Of Shredding, and Cemetery Gates. Need I say more? Beautiful melodies, heavy riffs, solos and leads from Dimebag Darrell bludgeoning drumming from Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown slamming on the bass guitar, and Phil Anselmo's emotion filled vocals with a Rob Halford esque sound to them... the last true greats of metal were born. #7 - Seasons In The Abyss: Slayer Slayer's Magnum Opus in my opinion, a true blend of the sheer speed and aggresion of Reign In Blood, with the darker, slower and menacing South of Heaven. This is personally my favorite Thrash album after Metallica's Ride The Lightning (given one album per band). It's also Slayer's most accessible album, with songs like Blood Red, War Ensemble, Spirit In Black, Dead Skin Mask and the title track, Seasons In The Abyss (the greatest Thrash song ever written?)... it's OUTSTANDING... and Dave Lombardo on drums, preach man. #8 - Agent Orange: Sodom Tutonic Thrash perfection, it's ruthless, pure aggression with harsh, Slayer-esq vocals and a Testament / Slayer on steroids style of music... one of the meanest guitar tones ever put to a record, straight from Germany. Fucking phenomenal. #9 - Beneath The Remains: Sepultera Beneath The Remains opens up with the title track, and a pure Thrash rager at that (top #10 Thrash song imo, and shares an outro with the intro of Metallica's One?)... A Killer, brutal and fast Brazilian Thrash record, you can't go wrong. #10 - Pleasure To Kill: Kreator More akin to black metal than the Maiden or Priest influenced bay area scene. Gnarly, vicious, Venom-esque vocals over a bombardment of blistering fast guitars and chaotic drumming. This is the most extreme thing Thrash ever had a hand in, in my opinion Honorable Mentions: Painkiller: Judas Priest No Place For Disgrace: Flotsam & Jetsam Killing Technology: Voivod Demilition Hammer: Tortured Existence Vio-Lence: Eternal Nightmare Forbidden: Forbidden Evil Heathen: Victims of Deception. If you like any of these I'm happy to curate some suggestions for you!
@@independenceltd. Beneath the Remains is outrageously under-appreciated. It always gets overlooked due to Arise and Chaos A.D., but I personally like it a ton more
Dude I couldn’t have made a better list. My only caveat would be that any mention of Arise and Ride the Lightning is missing. But you literally chose my favorite albums
@@Cheddar_Wizard haha thanks mate! Yeah Ride is my personal favorite Metallica album so it was hard to leave off... but I myself started with Kill so it just fit better for me. Arise is another killer album, just got that bad boy on vinyl, I love it... but I still felt like Beneath The Remains was more, "accessible" you could say.
Great show Pete. You always set the framework in such a way where it's easy to follow. My personal favorites and recommendations will always be Metallica's 'Kill Em' All'. 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets'. Megadeth's 'Rust in Peace' and 'Peace Sells ...' follows. Just something out of the genesis of family Metallica that became so very special. I'm torn with Overkill. Your choice of 'Taking Over' is about the best choice for newbies. While 'The Years of Decay' in '89 has 'Elimination'. That song still drives me today. The whole Overkill catalogue is a must. I was on board with Anthrax early on and then they gave us Urban Thrash for what the band calls their roots. At that point I checked out. The Public Enemy collaboration was sheer blasphemous to me. To me that was as out of place as Ice-T and Black Sabbath with 'Illusion of Power'. Another good choice and for a Canadian such as myself a no-brainer would be Anvil's 'Metal on Metal' in 1982. 'March of the Crabs'. 'Mothra'. '666'. Close to six decades on this planet and Thrash is still part of me.
Great starter list for thrash! So glad Overkill made it on your list and that Nuclear Assault and Whiplash were honorable mentions. For those new to thrash, I would also add Sacred Reich: Ignorance. Thrash ‘till death
Metallica - Master of Puppets Slayer - Reign in Blood Death Angel - Act III Exodus - Fabulous Disaster Anthrax - Among the Living Overkill - Under the Influence Testament - The Legacy Megadeth - Rust in Peace Suicidal Tendencies - How Can I Laugh Tomorrow Sodom - Agent Orange Artillery - By Inheritance Paradox - Heresy Kreator - Terrible Certainty Forbidden - Forbidden Evil Heathen - Breaking the Silence Onslaught - In Search of Sanity
Excellent episode - an interesting discipline to narrow down 10 'primers' for a genre. One could definitely argue for 3 or 4 Kreator ( I came to them quite late and loved them ) albums and the same applies to most of these bands.
I think The New Order is Testament’s magnum opus, but The Legacy, PWYP, and even Souls of Black (a bit weaker than the other three as a whole, imo) are also worthy.
Since you mentioned the newer thrash scene, I think it would be cool to dedicate an episode not necessarily naming like a top 10 albums, but just a general discussion of modern acts. Power Trip, Warbringer, Havok, Enforced, etc.
Metallica - Master of Puppets Slayer - Reign in Blood Megadeth - Rust in Peace Anthrax - Among the Living Exodus - Bonded by Blood Overkill - Years of Decay Testament - New Order Kreator - Pleasure to Kill Sepultura - Beneath the Remains And fuck it Pantera - Cowboys from Hell they took thrash into a new era
I went from thrash to Death and Grindcore about 1990. Is Exiter- Heavy Metal Maniac, thrash or speed metal. I highly recommend Ritually Abused by Numskull. 1988 They are a legendary band from Lake county IL.
It's been said time and again, that there is no such thing as "speed metal", thrash music is filled with bands that play fast, that is the defining characteristic of thrash music. Exciter (killer band!) make thrash music! Today I cranked up some Morbid Angel and then Morbid Saint's Spectrum Of Death album! Ears are still bleeding!🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘
I was into hard rock. I was into heavy metal. A friend brought over the first Metallica album and I instantly knew this was something new, something extremely cool and that rock was never gonna be the same!
Slayer - Hell Awaits Exodus - Bonded by Blood Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Kreator - Pleasure to Kill Voivod - Rrroooaaarrr Megadeth - Peace Sells... but Who's Buying Anthrax - Among the Living Testament - The New Order Overkill - The Years of Decay Btw you didn't fail this time, still one spot wasted for Metallica. It's not even real thrash, but what the hell, this album is actually very good. I also think people should appreciate that you finally got a copy of an Anthrax album.
Here’s my 10 albums for people to get into Thrash 1. Metallica Kill Em’ All 2. Megadeth Rust in Peace 3. Slayer Reign in Blood 4. Anthrax Among the Living 5. Exodus Bonded by Blood 6. Testament The Legacy 7. Overkill Taking Over 8. Suicidal Tendencies Lights Camera Revolution 9. Metal Church- Metal Church 10. Pantera Cowboys from Hell
I can completely understand just naming American bands. Sepultura, Voivod and the German bands are not as accessible as US thrash and probably not the best place to start. You could make the case for an Annihilator album but to me the British thrash bands were just copycats and imitators chasing the scene.
1- Rust In Peace 2- Rust In Peace 3- Rust In Peace 4- Rust In Peace 5- Rust In Peace 6- Rust In Peace 7- Rust In Peace 8- Rust In Peace 9- Rust In Peace 10- Rust In Peace
one other "honorable mention," since someone else mentioned Artillery...Sacrifice "Forward To Termination."...as for the 10 in your starter pack, they're spot-on, despite my ranking of Testament's "The New Order" over "The Legacy," but I understand why you chose it.

Couldn't agree more with the perfection from Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth (although Hell Awaits is on a par for me but Reign would be the perfect intro). Good work Pete you know your thrash well. How amazing was 1986 though, wow.

So no more albums for quite some time after my birthday.
Thanks for the tip on Carnivore, Pete! -- I never knew that Steele had an earlier band than Type O Negative. Great find! My two suggestions: as a late, but really meaningful addition to the genre roster, Annihilator, Never, Neverland. I know this is heresy, but to me this is the one album (same year) that beats Rust In Peace. You can't outdo Marty's work there, obviously, but to my ears NN boasts better production, has better overall songwriting consistency, and much stronger vocal presence. And also -- what happened to Voivod?? Or was that streak '86-'89 too proggy / odd to be included? Just saying :-)
1. Metallica - Ride the Lightning 2. Megadeth - Rust in Peace 3. Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today 4. Testament - The Legacy 5. Pantera - Cowboys from Hell 6. Slayer - Reign in Blood 7. Overkill - Taking Over 8. Anthrax - Among the Living 9. Exodus - Bonded by Blood 10. Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence
Testament is such a good pick man, I put New Order for mine, but it's a toss-up between Legacy, New Order and Formation imo. Cowboys From Hell too... everybody says groove but what was groove other than "post-thrash". Pretty good fucking list
I kind of disagree with Master Of Puppets. While it may arguably be Metallica's best album, for an intro I would pick Kill Em All. Maybe because it was my introduction to thrash. It is what the genre is all about. It was the album that created the genre in my opinion. Therefore, it has to be on this list. It should be the first album any newbie to thrash should listen to.
It’s either that or Scream Bloody Gore. It’s always been debated. In my opinion, Seven Churches leans more Thrash, and SBG leans more into what DM would be throughout the rest of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
Once you get past those, some less essential albums that I like quite a bit are the first albums by Death Angel (The Ultraviolence) and Whiplash (Power and Pain). edit: I didn't wait to post until after the HM, glad to see some love for Ultraviolence, I know a lot of people (including the Allmusic site) don't care for the album that much.
The Ultraviolence is sacred to me, it is thrash played at its highest level, riff after riff after riff....... Surprised thrash fans aren't united on this molten slab of metal!
Pantera are post-thrash, with Cowboys leaning on standard Thrash. They, as well as crossover THRASH bands wouls count. If we count death-thrash, prog-thrash, tec-thrash, etc etc then we have to include crossover and post-thrash. Pretty simple to understand
@Creeping_Justice correct it is pretty simple. This is a thrash list for beginners. Not a post-thrash list. Not a groove metal, hard rock, glam metal etc list. Those other thrash sub genres you listed do not have a place on the list.
@@Sirdamienfrost an introduction to a genre incluedes its sub-genres. Everything fits into a sub-genre... by your take, Pete shouldn't have mentioned anything outside of the Bay Area and NY scenes. No Destruction, Sodom, etc etc. It doesn't work like that. As an introduction to rock music I'd give someone both an SRV album and an AC/DC album, you can further guide your listening that way by establishing your likes and dislikes. Maybe someone won't like the stuff Metallica or Overkill put out, but would love Sodom and Kreator but dont know they exist because "thrash" was given to them as one basic section
Tremendous list. Pete. Did I detect a “ slight crack “ in the 8️⃣6️⃣. Metallica / Master of PUPPETS. Lol. Thanks again Pete for this fantastic series 👍💯
rust in peace ride the lightning hell awaits persistence of time bonded by blood the legacy agent orange pleasure to kill darkness desccends taking over just my two cents
Dark Angel, Sodom, Kreator, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer, Megadave......all killer - no filler! Your two cents just gained two million dollars with interest, due to your expert taste in METAL.🤘🎸🤘
Three S bands I'd add; Sacred Reich's Ignorance, Satan's Court In The Act, Sacrifice's Torment In Fire. Oh, and Hirax's Raging Violence. The list really seems endless. Metal Church, there's so many!
The list is endless for us thrash enthusiasts, but when it comes to getting newbies into the genre you have to be really discerning with what you give them in terms of first impressions of the genre. Big Four of thrash will always be the safest place to start (Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth especially).
Machine Head Burn My Eyes is a great album. Devastation's last 2 albums were good as well, a bit more technical Tourniquet. Also Paradox must have one of the strongest discographies out there. 👍

4. Anthrax - Spreading the Disease (1985)
3. Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)
2. Metallica - Ride the Lightning (1984)
1. Slayer - Reign In Blood (1986)
I will say this; if you’ve never listened to Rust in Peace, listen to the original recording not the remastered version.
Yeah I hate how soft the mix is. The drums sound like cardboard.
Yes! The 2004 remix sucks, go for the original 1990 CD. The remix changes some of the vocals and lyrics especially on Take No Prisoners and Five Magics.
Nothing by Megadeth is worth getting. Saw them live in 2006, utterly abysmal and totally forgettable, no stage presence at all.
You didn’t see them with Menza and Friedman then, or Poland and Samuelson. Even accounting for it being one bad night, you saw them over 20 years in, not one of the classic line ups. Invalid opinion.
Great point!
The 5 albums that came to mind first - IF I had to narrow it down - were "Kill 'Em All" by Metallica, "Taking Over" by Overkill, "The Ultra Violence" by Death Angel, "Reign in Blood" by Slayer, and "Darkness Descends" by Dark Angel. Obviously, there are several more, but those 5 are always at the top of the thrash heap for me.
In no particular order 1. Bonded By Blood-Exodus. 2. Reign In Blood-Slayer. 3. Kill Em All-Metallica. 4. Rust In Peace-Megadeth. 5. Beneath The Remains-Sepultura. 6. The Years Of Decay-Overkill. 7. Alice In Hell-Annihalator. 8. Darkness Descends-Dark Angel. 9. Submission For Liberty-4ARM. 10. Cowboys From Hell-Pantera
No Anthrax dude? They've put out some killer shit from the 80s, right up there for me.
Best opening track ever .
Bro check out sadus swallowed in black
This video made me smile. The list and the honorable mentions just took me back to my teenage years. I'm 50 now and Thrash is still my favourite sub-genre of metal. And I'm proud to say I own every single album you mentioned.
Highly recommend By Inheritance by Artillery. Very underrated Thrash album
🤘🤘🤘
Glad someone mentioned it! Some of the best underground thrash recorded.
Best thrash album ever. Very melodic, yet technical and fast. My favourite.
This is the best thrash album ever created. You have great taste sir!
Insane chops from this band! Blew me and my buds away, upon first hearing it!
Here are my top recommendations for beginners:
1. Flotsam And Jetsam - Doomsday For The Deceiver (Very good vocals great for beginners to the genre)
2. Anthrax - Spreading The Disease (Great vocals too good for beginners)
3. Artillery - By Inheritance (Super vocals again)
Start with these 3 first if you can't get past the harsher vocals.
4. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
5. Megadeth - Rust In Peace
6. Slayer - Show No Mercy
7. Testament - The Legacy
8. Annihilator - Alice In Hell
9. Exodus - Bounded By Blood
10. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Tankard - Zombie Attack is a great starter. They just get overlooked constantly.
Thanks for sharing🙏👍
I'm not necessarily doing just one album per band, because that's not what hooked me on thrash!
In no particular order:
1. Megadeth - Peace Sells But Who's Buying
2. Anthrax - State of Euphoria
3. Metallica - Master of Puppets
4. Slayer - South of Heaven
5. Slayer - Reign in Blood
6. Megadeth - Rust in Peace
7. Heathen - Victims of Deception
8. Overkill - The Years of Decay
9. Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
State of Euphoria!
thank you for always being awesome. this channel is treasure for a true music nerd.
1986... what a year for thrash! 🤘🤘
Best year for metal overall I think, I was 17 at the time and it was just great. This or 1988 is the best.
@@GordonHeaney For me, 1991 was probably the best over all, but 1986 definitely for thrash.. 🤗
Bajamelajaulajaimebajamela
Excellent list! Great theme for this month!
For people who want straight forward easy listening thrash:
1. Metallica: Master of Puppets
2. Testament: The New Order
3. Megadeth: Peace Sells but Who"s Buying
4. Overkill: Taking Over
For people who want to try something more extreme:
5. Dark Angel: Darkness Descends
6. Slayer: Reign in Blood
7. Sepultura: Beneath the Remains
8. Kreator: Extreme Agression
For People who like technical/progressive playing
9. Annihilator: Alice in Hell
10. Coroner: Punishment for Decadence
If you are coming from punk here are some honorable:
Nuclear Assult: Survive
Carnivore: Retaliation
Cromags: Best Wishes
DRI: Crossover
Side note: This is quite the hot take but I would replace Rust in Peace with Peace Sells.
A honorable mention I'll put fourth Voivod - Dimension Hatross!
Total banger. Up there with Kreator, Sodom etc.
3:00 great call out! Started listening to both Venom and Motorhead in the Summer of 81.
11:00 Just wait a few more years. It might seem that way.
Death Angel - Act III 😍
Act III is masterful thrash music, have spun it over three billion times.
@@treff9226 Same here! Post 2000 stuff is Killer as well.😍
@@kurtaugustus1767To my ears, they haven't made a bad album! Never forget hearing The Ultra Violence for first time and then seeing the band members were still in grade school.....well, not quite, but their musicianship was mind blowing, considering how young they were! They've been through some tragedy, but came out ahead and continue to drop top tier album after album. 🤘
Saw em a couple months back, probably the best band I've ever seen
Honourable mention: Sepultura's Arise. A Masterpiece.
Preach!Arise is my top Seputura album. Flawless and fierce! Perfect combo of heavy and accessible.
*UNDER A PALE GREY SKY WE SHALL ARISE*
1 Ride the llghiting - Metallica
2 Rest in Peace - Megadeth
3 Arise - Sepultura.
4 Season in the Abyss - Slayer.
5 Handle Pain Nuclear Assalto.
6 Pleasure tô kill Kreator.
7 - By Inhenritance - Artillery.
8 - Chemical Invasion Tankard.
9 - Persistence of Time - Anthrax.
10 - Bonded By Blood - Exodus.
Great point Pete about the newbie best off getting their feet wet with your rock and Metal episodes of this great series! This is the NEXT step.
Great list Pete 🤘
Great list! I’d personally swap out the sodom and destruction for lights camera revolution by suicidal tendencies and arise by Sepultura.
ARTILLERY-BY INHERITANCE
Without a doubt one of the very best thrash albums ever.
Artillery musicianship is insane! Yeah, that album is f'n flawless! Nice pick!!!
Thrash beginners should:
Make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in the fully upright and locked positions.
Huge thrash/death metal fan now
1. Metallica - Black album
2. Megadeth - countdown to extinction
3. Pantera - cowboys from hell
4. Motorhead - bastards
5. Sepultura - chaos ad
6. Overkill - WFO
7. Anthrax - stomp 42
8. Slayer - divine intervention
9. White zombie - la sexorcisto
10. Testament - low
Cheers.
@@purpletemple1 well, that's pretty easy to make happen as Reed and I go way back. He appeared on a CF episode a number of years ago actually!
@@seaoftranquilityprog Yes, that's why I mention it. I didn't know (or remember) he already appeared on the channel, but it would be awesome to hear from him again. He hasn't been the most productive musician, but the quality of his discography is impressive to say the least. Really miss his playing...
Never heard Reign in Blood before. Bloody hell!! Surprisingly, I liked it and will try more
As another suggestion for someone's introduction to thrash - Killing Technology.
Great list Pete, I would have thrown in Killing Technology by Voivod 🤘
Gotta have them 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
1. Slayer "Reign In Blood"
2. Sodom "Agent Orange"
3. Metallica "Master Of Puppets"
4. Anthrax "Among the Living"
5. Death Angel "Frolic Through The Park"
6. Overkill "Taking Over"
7. Megadeth "Rust In Peace"
8. Exodus "Bonded By Blood"
9. Testament "Titans Of Creation" (wanted to name a newer one by a legendary band)
10. Destruction "The Antichrist"
Fantastic choices!
@@logancollins7097 Thanks Logan.. Hope all is well and have a great day our friend..
Checking out your list and Petes. Didn’t listen to a lot of metal after the mid ‘80s so I’m always playing catch up!
Resistor.. Agree and same here.. I was like that in 90's as well.. But thankfully discovering a lot i missed from then..
My list would be:
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Anthrax - Among the Living
Sodom - Agent Orange
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Destruction - Infernal Overkill
Sepultura - Arise
Overkill - The Years of Decay
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends.
GREAT list!
Thrash Metal is my favorite genre of metal, so this one is very special to me... with that said, I'm going to order these, not by year, but by accessibility for a newcomer (in my opinion)
#1 - Kill 'Em All: Metallica
The birth of Thrash to the wider audience, combining New Wave Of British Heavy Metal with Punk attitude, legends were born. It's accesible, fast and heavy while not being a deterrent to newcomers. Seek & Destroy, The Four Horsemen and Whiplash are Thrash at it's core.
#2 - Rust In Peace: Megadeth
From the opening riff of Holy Wars, this album is destined for greatness. Arguably one of the most iconic guitar riffs of all-time, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson and Nick Menza made magic on this record. Flawless, and I cannot praise this record enough, it's so good, it transcends sub-genres.
#3 - The New Order: Testament
This is one of the albums that solidified my love for Thrash metal, the vocal melodies and choruses... catchy riffs, leads, phenomenal drumming, basswork, finished with great mixing and production. This is a MUST LISTEN for someone wanting to get into Thrash.
#4 - State of Euphoria: Anthrax
Fun, bounce-riff laden, goofy and unserious, tye-dye "pizza thrash" (fun, party stuff) Anti-Social is the most fun song that Thrash has Thrashed.
#5 - Fabolous Disaster: Exodus
The true innovators of the Thrash Metal scene in the San Francisco Bay Area, Exodus created great chanting choruses with Toxic Waltz, Fabolous Disaster... and a cover of Low Rider? It's just a fun time all the way through, have at it!
#6 - Cowboys From Hell: Pantera
Cowboys From Hell, Domination, The Art Of Shredding, and Cemetery Gates.
#7 - Seasons In The Abyss: Slayer
Slayer's Magnum Opus in my opinion, a true blend of the sheer speed and aggresion of Reign In Blood, with the darker, slower and menacing South of Heaven.
#8 - Agent Orange: Sodom
Tutonic Thrash perfection, it's ruthless, pure aggression with harsh, Slayer-esq vocals and a Testament / Slayer on steroids style of music... one of the meanest guitar tones ever put to a record, straight from Germany. Fucking phenomenal.
#9 - Beneath The Remains: Sepultera
Beneath The Remains opens up with the title track, and a pure Thrash rager at that (top #10 Thrash song imo, and shares an outro with the intro of Metallica's One?)... A Killer, brutal and fast Brazilian Thrash record, you can't go wrong.
#10 - Pleasure To Kill: Kreator
More akin to black metal than the Maiden or Priest influenced bay area scene. Gnarly, vicious, Venom-esque vocals over a bombardment of blistering fast guitars and chaotic drumming. This is the most extreme thing Thrash ever had a hand in, in my opinion
Honorable Mentions:
Painkiller: Judas Priest
No Place For Disgrace: Flotsam & Jetsam
Killing Technology: Voivod
Demilition Hammer: Tortured Existence
Vio-Lence: Eternal Nightmare
Forbidden: Forbidden Evil
Heathen: Victims of Deception.
If you like any of these I'm happy to curate some suggestions for you!
many of the same bands. i had that kreator and sepultura album at 11 and 12.
There we go! This is THE list.
PETE PERFECT PICKS AS ALWAYS !!!
Pete have you heard Xentrix ? British thrash band from back in the day…suggest you check out Shattered Existence & For Who’s advantage 🤘
New metal fans listening to some of these classics for the first time is great fun to see!
Killer starter kit, Pete! 🔥🤘🏻🎸
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Death Angel - Act III
Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
Anthrax - Among the Living
Overkill - Under the Influence

Sodom - Agent Orange
Artillery - By Inheritance
Paradox - Heresy
Kreator - Terrible Certainty
Forbidden - Forbidden Evil
Heathen - Breaking the Silence
Onslaught - In Search of Sanity
Excellent episode - an interesting discipline to narrow down 10 'primers' for a genre. One could definitely argue for 3 or 4 Kreator ( I came to them quite late and loved them ) albums and the same applies to most of these bands.
Top 10 starter pack (one album per band):
1 Metallica - Master....
2 Slayer - Reign....

6 Overkill - Years....
7 Vio-Lence - Eternal....

10 Dark Angel - Darkness....
Love the Practice What You Preach pick. 😊 I think Souls of Black is 'probably' better, but nostalgia is a helluva drug.
@@jondorsey2043 I might be an even bigger fan of The New Order, but I think Practice was just that much more accessible
@@JoltinJoe26 I think you're probably right.
I think The New Order is Testament’s magnum opus, but The Legacy, PWYP, and even Souls of Black (a bit weaker than the other three as a whole, imo) are also worthy.

Artillery - By Inheritance
This album has everything.
Since you mentioned the newer thrash scene, I think it would be cool to dedicate an episode not necessarily naming like a top 10 albums, but just a general discussion of modern acts. Power Trip, Warbringer, Havok, Enforced, etc.
That's a pretty neat intro to the genre !..! !..!
Megadeth - "Rust In Peace"

Indeed! Watch out for the Rust in peace remix. You gotta hear the original 1990 mix.
I'm gonna check out Numskull, as I have recently heard them mentioned a few times. Great to recommend under the radar metal bands - nice work!
Great topic for me add mental vortex coroner as well

Overkill - The Years of Decay
Btw you didn't fail this time, still one spot wasted for Metallica. It's not even real thrash, but what the hell, this album is actually very good. I also think people should appreciate that you finally got a copy of an Anthrax album.
Here’s my 10 albums for people to get into Thrash
1. Metallica Kill Em’ All
2. Megadeth Rust in Peace
3. Slayer Reign in Blood
4. Anthrax Among the Living
5. Exodus Bonded by Blood
6. Testament The Legacy
7. Overkill Taking Over
8. Suicidal Tendencies Lights Camera Revolution
9. Metal Church- Metal Church
10. Pantera Cowboys from Hell
All American.
I can completely understand just naming American bands. Sepultura, Voivod and the German bands are not as accessible as US thrash and probably not the best place to start. You could make the case for an Annihilator album but to me the British thrash bands were just copycats and imitators chasing the scene.
Good list, but Metal Church's first album is not thrash IMO, but it is great metal
Overkill, Metallica, Slayer, Testament, Sodom, Megadeth - great choices
The band 'Paradox' (Heresy) would be on my list but your list is a very good one.
Whiplash's "Power and Pain" ist definitely missing, it's probably the best thrash record together with Exodus' "Bonded by Blood".
1- Rust In Peace
2- Rust In Peace
3- Rust In Peace
4- Rust In Peace
5- Rust In Peace
6- Rust In Peace
7- Rust In Peace

9- Rust In Peace
10- Rust In Peace
Wow! How could you have left off Megadeth masterpiece, state of the art, thrash classic Rust In Peace!?!? WTF? 😁
Hmmmm, where is Megadeth 90?
one other "honorable mention," since someone else mentioned Artillery...Sacrifice "Forward To Termination."...as for the 10 in your starter pack, they're spot-on, despite my ranking of Testament's "The New Order" over "The Legacy," but I understand why you chose it.

I really love thrash but I only have Greatest Hits-albums by Sodom and Megadeth or them on samplers, even though I like them.😅
Should buy more but I sadly have to say that I kinda struggle with the 200-300 CDs/Vinyls/Tapes I have around here, already.
Solid list. I’m onboard
1. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
2. Megadeth - Rust in Peace
3. Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today
4. Testament - The Legacy
5. Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
6. Slayer - Reign in Blood
7. Overkill - Taking Over
8. Anthrax - Among the Living
9. Exodus - Bonded by Blood
@@Swullmark agree on testament, and CFH is definitely thrash.
Fabulous call on How Will I Laugh…. Masterpiece
@@TheRealDannAlexander 🤘
Nailed it great job. Putting a newb onto these albums will surely get them addicted 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥
1 master of puppets - Metallica
2 rust in prace - megadeath
3 reign in blood - slayer
4 arise- sepultura
5 bondes by blood - exodus
6 souls of black - testament
7 extreme aggression - Kreator
8 agent orange - sodom
9 war remains - enforced
10 slaughter in the vatican - exhorder
Great list, only mistake is Bonded by Blood without the original cover 😂
Never seen that cover before! :-0
We need an Annihilator album ranking!!!!
I've always heard that "Seven Churches" is considered to be the 1st Death Metal Album.
It’s either that or Scream Bloody Gore. It’s always been debated. In my opinion, Seven Churches leans more Thrash, and SBG leans more into what DM would be throughout the rest of the ‘80s and early ‘90s.
Oh man i was so hoping to see a Sepultura nod in the top 10 but i'll still take it as a giant fanboy.
Thank you!! You mentioned all the usual suspects but didn't forget Forbidden and Carnivore )) You made my day
I bought Bonded by Blood on vinyl when it came out, I always thought the cover was terrible!
I love thrash but I can’t & I mean I can’t do Slayer, I’ve tried so many times, nope can’t do it
SLAYER albums before Reign in Blood are better for me.
So many of you listing crossover bands and Pantera in a thrash introduction list.
Great albums.......... thanks 🤘🤘🤘
What is your shirt Pete?
rust in peace
ride the lightning
hell awaits
persistence of time
bonded by blood
the legacy
agent orange
pleasure to kill
darkness desccends
taking over
just my two cents
Dark Angel, Sodom, Kreator, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer, Megadave......all killer - no filler! Your two cents just gained two million dollars with interest, due to your expert taste in METAL.🤘🎸🤘
I'm shocked you did not add Pantera !
