You guys are fun. Even though I'm not a "metal" fan, your descriptions are great. I do like a lot of your other favorites, and that's what keeps me listening.
Boston - Boston was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a "perfect" album. Great songs front to back, I think my favorite is Hitch A Ride. That sudden transition from slow to fast in the second chorus, the way that last solo slides in following the quiet chorus, just gorgeous songwriting

Terry Wilson: I had Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards as my honorable mention but I agree with you and I had Jethro Tull's Benefit as my number one. I still listen to that album all the way through about once every other month. Good choices.

It sure is. Punctuated my move from sunny FLA to suburbia in GA where the industrial concrete jungle vibe of Owner of a Lonely Heart and Changes really were emotionally deep.
It's not the Yes that most fans know and love, but damn did they absolutely crush the "pop-prog" genre with 90125. They took Asia to the cleaners in my opinion.
Close with number 5, as well as Hall of the Mountain Grill. But the rules are, any hint of filler, disqualified from this list, at least in my opinion. But both Hawkwind classics.

Also, Martin’s podcast History in 5 songs ranking Zeppelin albums in context is definitely worth a listen. Their albums are almost considered untouchable but when compared to other albums released at the time it makes you think otherwise.

Pete, I am compiling all of the albums that you guys talked about here on the show as perfect or near-perfect albums for about a year now because I have watched your videos since late 2019. I just want to say your videos matter to me a lot and I gain so much knowledge about new artists or albums I haven't heard from this channel. It is just a terrific experience just to listen to so many great songs. You should definitely make another "perfect albums" video and I might need another hard disk to have bigger memory space for all those songs. Thanks again. God bless you.
Perfect albums: Dixie Dregs - all of them! Morse was a world class player, but his writing and arranging were just as virtuous! Kansas - Song for America.. Masque/Leftoverture/point of know return almost perfect. Yes - Close to the Edge, Relayer Rush - Caress of Steel, Fly By Night, Moving Pictures King Crimson - Red, Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Camel - Snow Goose, Moonmadness Jethro Tull - Song From the Wood, Passion Play, Thick as a Brick Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here. Lots of pop rock bands like Boston, Tom Petty, Sweet had albums with many tracks that were viable standalone hits.
Great video Pete. Martin is great as ever. He picked 2 of my top 5 too.... AC/DC - Highway to hell Judas Priest - Stained Class Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece Boston - Boston Thin Lizzy - Black Rose
Thanks Pete and Martin for doing this list this was alaso very hard here are my "round one" favorite perfect albums in no particular order: 1. Black Sabbath -------- Heaven and Hell (1980) 2. Judas Priest ------- Stained Class (1978) 3.. Metallica -------- Master of Puppets (1986) 4. Megadeth -------- Rust in Peace (1990) 5. Sade -------- Diamond Life (debut album) (1984)....... I know this is not rock or metal but for the genre of music it is in (jazz) this is definitely my favorite perfect album her singing is so silky smooth and it shows on this album from start to finish and it really set the tone for her following albums
The beatles - rubber soul Pink Floyd - Animals The Clash - London calling The stone roses - the stone roses Megadeth - rust in peace David Bowie - The rise and fall of ziggy stardust
Excellent show! Would love a Part Two. Interesting thing that Pete pointed out is that a lot of these choices may not be necessarily be your favorite artists. Only Miles Davis would be one of my 10 favorite artists or bands on my list. 1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (love some of his albums more but this is perfect) 2. Boston - self-titled debut (First album that always comes to mind that plays like a greatest hits record) 3. Billy Squier - Don't Say No 4. Steely Dan - Aja (see #1) 5. The Jam - Sound Affects
Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon Hendrix: Axis:Bold As Love The Doors: Morrison Hotel Rush: Hemispheres The Smiths: Hatful of Hollow Alice In Chains: Dirt Led Zeppelin: Houses of the Holy Shudder To Think: Pony Express Record
This is probably the best show Pete and Martin ever did. Great selections and informative as usual. Absolutely agree with Martin about Ride The Lightning.
Pete and Martin, very good topic and great choices. Glad to see Pete pick Boston. Looking forward to part two. My picks off the top of my head: The Doors - Strange Days Led Zeppelin IV The Who - Quadrophenia The Cult - Love Marillion - Misplaced Childhood Just to name a few. There is definitely more.
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Queen - A Night at the Opera Deep Purple - In Rock & Machine Head Judas Priest - Sad Wings & Stained Class Yes - Close to the Edge Pink Floyd - Animals King Crimson - Red Motörhead - Ace of Spades AC/DC - Highway to Hell & Back in Black

5) judas priest - screaming for vengeance 4) toto - isolation 3) house of Lords - sahara 2) rival sons - feral roots 1) led zeppelin - physical graffiti Great show guys... part two please! 👍
For me, the first album that came to mind was 'Ram' by Paul McCartney. A completely nostalgic choice that I always have to listen to the entire album. If I don't, I get earworms of the songs I didn't listen to.
I was a huge Styx fan as a teenager in the late 70's but eventually moved on from them as my taste in music expanded. So I didn't listen to them for probably 20 years but when I rediscovered Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight I found I appreciate them even more today. Grand Illusion definitely makes my perfect album list
I’m a massive Styx fan but I’ll give you a tip after listening to every album of theirs countless times. By far the best in my opinion are the first 4. If you have not got them, get them. Father OSA from Styx 2 is amazing.
@@michaelperkins9404 Yes! I absolutely love those albums as well. Especially The Serpent is Rising. which along with Styx II is wildly under rated. Michael, can I ask you a question? Do you think Styx is a prog band? A friend and I were talking about that and disagreeing about it. I don't think so. Nobody ever called them a prog band in the 70's at least that I ever heard. I could see where they may be considered a little "prog-ish" but that's as close as I can get to it.
From memory I like the second song but that’s it. Renegade annoys me. I love Crystal Ball, more so than Grand Illusion. Man in the wilderness, Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself I love. Cyclorama is my favourite after the first 4. Everyone has varied tastes and it makes life interesting. I was actually surprised when Pete Pardo said that Grand Illusion was his favourite.
My perfection: Songs From The Wood - Jethro Tull Rumors - Fleetwood Mac Debut - The Cars Moving Pictures - Rush Debut - Boston Powerslave - Iron Maiden
Instead of the FM rock station I will go to the other end of the dial: Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures Wire - Chairs Missing Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas Dead Can Dance - The Serpent's Egg Hüsker Dü - Metal Circus My Bloody Valentine - Loveless The Orb - U.F.Orb The Smiths - The Queen is Dead The Wedding Present - Bizarro The Misfits - Static Age
Yes!! Glad someone here enjoys music like the cocteaus and my bloody valentine (both of which are on my list too). That side of rock, more like dreampop/shoegaze, tends to get overlooked around here :P
Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties Deep Purple - Machine Head Boston - Boston Yes - Fragile Black Sabbath - Paranoid Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy The Guess Who - Canned Wheat Grateful Dead - American Beauty Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come Jethro Tull - Aqualung Eagles - Hotel California Kansas -Leftoverture The Who - Who's Next Heart - Dreamboat Annie Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards Kino - Gruppa Krovi I know, these are most of our most cherished bands, but please check out "Gruppa Krovi" by the band Kino, its an amazing album from the Soviet era, came out during Gorbachev when for the first time, rock and roll was not criminalized in the Soviet Union, their bass guitar is special.
Totally agree on Styx - The Grand Illusion is some of the best albums ever and not a single bad track. It's perfect! 2112, Moving Pictures and Signals by Rush, same thing...
I have always wondered what the fuss with GRAND ILLUSION is all about. I love the album but I find it hard to play when the first 4 albums to me are so much better and stand the test of time much better. I honestly believe that people who rave about GRAND ILLUSION and for that matter PIECES OF EIGHT (the latter I find just horrible) may not have heard the first 4 albums.
Rush - Moving Pictures Rush - Permanent Waves Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell Black Sabbath - Mob Rules Kansas - Leftoverture Sisters of Mercy - Floodland Catherine Wheel - Chrome The Tragically Hip - Up To Here Iron Maiden - Killers Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
Catherine Wheel-beautiful shoegaze and shows that Bruce Dickinson isn't the only talented musician in the family! Rob's vocals nothing like Bruce's, but perfect for that genre! Chrome was their peak, but Ferment was damn good as well. Very cool to see Catherine Wheel mentioned-I am a huge fan of shoegaze (Slowdive, Ride, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine, Curve, Swervedriver, The Pale Saints etc. Huge Cocteau Twins fan, as well! Going to check out that Sisters of Mercy album. Peace.
@@treffbennett6534 I got a promo copy of Ferment working in college radio and I was immediately hooked. My Bloody Valentine is amazing. Gonna go check a few of those other bands you mentioned. Not familiar with all of them. That Sisters of Mercy album is phenomenal goth rock.
@@kyleturner1359 Hey Kyle-I want to give huge thanks to you for putting Sisters Of Mercy masterpiece 'FLOODLAND' on your list. I am listening to the song samples and purchasing it as fast as I can! I had a few Sisters songs on a mix tape but none of their albums. Got plenty of Cure, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy etc. This entire album is hypnotizing and sets an incredibly evocative mood-beautifully sad! Yes sir-you done me a real solid right here, my friend. all the best to you.
Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn Kansas - Leftoverture Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Styx - The Grand Illusion Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is about as close as we can come to a 'perfect album.' Nearly all hits, listenable end-to-end, and important for Elton's career. Still relevant today.
Renaissance: Turn of the Cards, Ashes are burning Traffic: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys King Crimson: Court of the Crimson King Blind Faith Foreigner (1st album)
That's some devastating choices. They are relatively perfect albums - though Blind Faith, as massive as it is, may have a less-than-legendary cut on it. I mean it's still massive; even Abbey Road had Octopus's Garden, right? And I will never to my dying days understand how anyone could put any Foreigner album above that genuinely perfect first one! Good call!
A few choices of my own: My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans Immortal - At The Heart of Winter Katatonia - Viva Emptiness Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Cult of Luna - Salvation Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale Wuthering Heights - Salt Tristania - Widow's Weeds
Some (not so obvious) picks: Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts Nick Drake - Pink Moon Talk Talk - Laughing Stock Burial - Untrue
The Amboy Dukes - Journey To The Center Of The Mind BTO - Not Fragile BOC - Tyranny and Mutation Grand Funk - Red Album Dead Boys - Young, Loud and Snotty
The Red Album is such a forgotten classic. The debut is great, but the second album gets heavier and darker. They were different then the other bands at that time.
Got so many other perfect albums but these 5 will do for now: Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Cream - Disraeli Gears Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? Scorpions - Virgin Killer Mountain - Climbing!
I love your Porcupine Tree mention! - I just listened to that album again a few days ago. I mention them to people and no one has ever heard of them. Like their earlier stuff as well

Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Exodus - Bonded by Blood
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Faith No More - Angel Dust
Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger is my #6 (I only listed my top 5).
Also King Crimson Red
@@pauld4129 I almost put that one but I wanted one album by each artist so I ended up giving it to debut just because it was historically more impactful, but Red might even be my fave album of theirs.
Romantic Warrior is beyond perfect
You guys are fun. Even though I'm not a "metal" fan, your descriptions are great. I do like a lot of your other favorites, and that's what keeps me listening.
I absolutely love Boston's self titled debut album! A total masterpiece from start to finish.
Boston - Boston was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of a "perfect" album. Great songs front to back, I think my favorite is Hitch A Ride. That sudden transition from slow to fast in the second chorus, the way that last solo slides in following the quiet chorus, just gorgeous songwriting

wywh is so overrated ngl, its a good album and all, but so generic
Revolver is one of my favorite albums but I'd argue that it isn't perfect just because of Yellow Submarine. Great list though.
@@tomb2577 no way, shine on you crazy diamond is definitely not generic, welcome to the machine is not generic, the title track arguably, but it's still amazing and have a cigar has an amazing guitar solo and great vocals.

Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
Jethro Tull - Benefit
By the way maths was never my strong point 😀
Terry Wilson: I had Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards as my honorable mention but I agree with you and I had Jethro Tull's Benefit as my number one. I still listen to that album all the way through about once every other month. Good choices.
1. Close To the Edge- Yes
2. Physical Graffiti- Led Zeppelin
3. Automatic- The Jesus and Mary Chain
4. Wish You Were Here- Pink Floyd

For a DBL album, Physical Graffiti is GREAT. Perfect album? Yeah....maybe. Considering it's a dbl release...yeah. Wonderful record.
YES 90125! Never get tired of it. Start to finish it’s excellent!
It sure is. Punctuated my move from sunny FLA to suburbia in GA where the industrial concrete jungle vibe of Owner of a Lonely Heart and Changes really were emotionally deep.
Not their best album but it does quailfy.
It's not the Yes that most fans know and love, but damn did they absolutely crush the "pop-prog" genre with 90125. They took Asia to the cleaners in my opinion.
In the same with Going for the one by Yes
Got to see both versions live. I love Steve but Trevor is nice too. Love 90125 and Big Generator.
Love the shows with Martin Popoff. He’s the authority on so much!!! And love every FAQ book I’ve read of his. Thank you Pete for your passion!

Fire of Unknown Origin is to me a perfect album. Great flow and mixing the BÖC hard rock with some new wave and art pop influences is giving the album endless replay value. Also Sad Wings of Destiny by Priest, Aqualung by Tull, Peter Gabriel 3 and Sheharazade by Renaissance spring to my mind.

Tori Amos - Boys For Pele (with the original version of Professional Widow)

Too Fast For Love is like mixing Desolation Blvd. with Heaven Tonight.

The Bends - Radiohead
The Joshua Tree -U2
Ten - Pearl Jam
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
The Thirteenth Step - A Perfect Circle
Coliseum Rock - Starz (admittedly I may be on my own with this one)
Gathering of Freaks - Freak of Nature
Permanent Waves - Rush
Metallica - Metallica
Although I have never thought about it before, I agree with Martin that Never Mind the Bollocks would fall into this list.
Also, Martin’s podcast History in 5 songs ranking Zeppelin albums in context is definitely worth a listen. Their albums are almost considered untouchable but when compared to other albums released at the time it makes you think otherwise.
BOC- Secret Treaties
Zappa- Overnite Sensation
Pink Floyd- Dark Side
King Crimson-In the Court of the Crimson King
The Stooges- Funhouse
Devo-Are We Not Men?
The Misfits-Earth AD
Faith No More- Angel Dust
Deep Purple- Machine Head
Iggy and the Stooges- Raw Power is brilliant from start to finish too.

Renaissance: Turn of the Cards, Ashes are burning
Traffic: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
King Crimson: Court of the Crimson King
Blind Faith
Foreigner (1st album)
That's some devastating choices. They are relatively perfect albums - though Blind Faith, as massive as it is, may have a less-than-legendary cut on it. I mean it's still massive; even Abbey Road had Octopus's Garden, right?

Katatonia - Viva Emptiness
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Cult of Luna - Salvation
Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace
Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale
Wuthering Heights - Salt
Tristania - Widow's Weeds
