What I took out of this. Here is a multi- millionaire, very , very successful musician, well known , yet he seems super, super excited on a Thursday night to talk about music with another person on his level with knowledge. He deep down is just a regular JOE, who loves music like the 55k who listens to PETES show daily. His childhood memories about The WHO / Tommy was tremendous. He was not a good co- host, he was AWESOME. Absolutely, loved this Episode. Tremendous job PETE! 👍💯
That's why Portnoy is the man.
All of this is true, but i don't think he is as rich as you think.
@@millionvivy Agreed - he might make a decent living, but probably not a millionaire
I couldn't have said it better!
I looked it up, somewhere between 8 and 10 million.
Mike Portnoy may be the one of the coolest dudes in Prog Metal. One of my favorite drummers.
He's a proper gent who happens to be a fucking great muso, not just in body but in spirit too. I love the guy!
Pete Pardo, man!! What a goddamn legend. Look at what he has has been able to do with his channel this year. You’re the man!
You’ve got to get Mike back. It’s fun to listen to a great musician that is a music nerd like we all are. With all those albums he has , I’d love to hear more about his favorite albums and really enjoyed the conversation between you two. The only down side was it went so fast, I wanted more.
Portnoy has content on RUclips where he goes through his new vinyl
He will be back! We are already trying to work out his next appearance....stay tuned!
Pete Pardo/Steven Reid; Pete Pardo/Martin Popoff; Pete Pardo/Sydney Taylor; Pardo & Pardo brothers in arms - for me, all pretty good SoT combinations, but I have to say Pete Pardo/Mike Portnoy has shot up there too! Would be awesome to have him back, this was a fantastic show.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Awesome!
What a f***ing show, I'm speechless Pete
Portnoy rules! Great drummer, but even better with his music history! Just look at all those CDs (or vinyl) for crying out loud! 🤣Cheers boys!
SOT has always had fantastic guests on the show but having Mike Portnoy appear on the channel is the best coup yet, what I love about him is he's a true music geek but also happens to be one of the greatest drummers on the planet. Fantastic episode and excellent job as always Pete, keep it up.
This shouldn’t be a surprise but I’m very impressed at Portnoy’s fandom.
Pete and Mike would make for an amazing duo for future shows.
One of the best episodes ever. Pete has found his musical soulmate. Both share such unbridled enthusiasm for the music they love...like two peas in a pod. This was a real pleasure to watch. Thanks, guys!
This is fucking cool - and probably the only time a guest has more albums than Pardo. If Quadrophenia and The Wall are not mentioned, I am going to have a conniption.
Pete is actually not a huge Wall fan. Prefers maybe 8 Floyd albums above it.
@@andrewdunn49ers Placing all bets on Portnoy to do the right thing!
I knew it! That was awesome.
@@andrewdunn49ers can understand Pete's position re the Wall
The original lps from Japan had no writing anywhere on the front or back covers. I had that too. But I kept my mirror I won at a Philadelphia carnival in 1983.
The Ocean: Precambrian
The Smashing Pumpkins: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Aphrodite's Child: 666
Minutemen: Double Nickels On the Dime
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Stadium Arcadium
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Nine Inch Nails: The Fragile
The Clash: London Calling
Swans: To Be Kind
The Beatles: The Beatles (The White Album)
Todd Rundgren: Something/Anything?
👏👏👏👏 on the Pumpkins and Minutemen. The latter is as important to punk as London Calling.
smashed like for Aphrodite's Child
Great list, but _To Be Kind_ is a triple!
MCIS is meta. Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band, then Dream Theater.
Glad someone mentioned DNOTD! I was hoping Portnoy would talk about it. Incidentally, I recently listened to the 1984 episode of the Album Years podcast with Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness and they failed to mention it as well.
This is way better than just a straight interview, hope it’s a regular thing
Blonde on Blonde, The White Album, Exile on Main St, Tommy, Quadrophenia, Freak Out!, Chicago Transit Authority, Physical Graffiti, All Things Must Pass
Excellent -- only problem is that I now have no reason to post here hahaha. Coincidentally, listening to All Things Must Pass at this moment.
@@xaspirate8060 One of my favs too. Check the reaction channel Welp where they react to the whole album.
@@ArniePorter Just checked out that channel... will go back later as they seem like 2 decent chaps with sense of humor But - I don't know how 90% of these "Reaction folk" have never heard these songs before. Come on, the one guy never heard My Sweet Lord? Very skeptical as there are a bunch out there that just so happen to react to the same song on the same date and that sort of thing. Not hating but...
@@xaspirate8060 In this case, these guys were born after some of this music came out and it was their parents music and therefore wasn’t cool to them. I think they knew mostly the Beatles Number 1 album and not much of their solo work but I’ve had them react to Rubber Soul, Revolver, ATMP and Ram. A lot of Reactors are getting similar requests from old timers like me. There are some other really good reaction channels which I follow.

yea that's that good shit right there
I want to share a small personal story about pink floyd the wall, I was not much of a music listener at all, except for some random stuff you might come across on the tele. but when I was around 15 I had a math teacher in school who was also a guitar player in a small band and he was always harping on and on and on about pink floyd as if they were the second coming of Jesus himself. so one day out of sheer curiosity I was like I want to see for myself what the hell is this pink floyd. so I went to a record store and I said "give me pink floyd" and they were like "which album?" I was such a noob when it comes to music that I did not even know what an "album" was but I did not want to sound like an idiot or show that I did not know what I was talking about so I just said nonchalantly "any album is fine" lol, so he was like ok this is the the wall and this is a double album, when he said the word "double" it rung a bell in my head, hmm double I guess I am getting something more, ha ha, so I was like ye that will do. And I bought it, and the rest as they say is history! maybe someone would find my little account amusing or interesting, it is 100 percent true story word for word!

Physical Graffiti.
Robert Plant's favorite Zep album
first double album that came to my mind.
"Jeff Wayne's musical version of the War of the Worlds" - huge hit album when I was a kid and I still love it. Another album where you can't really tell what it is. Pop, Rock, Prog - absolutely!
Great Job. Not exactly rock but Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" is a fantastic double LP
He had a creative period in the early/mid seventies like no one else! "Music of my Mind "Talking Book" "Innervisions", "Fuflinginess First Finale" Then Songs in the Key of Life - all within four years!
Thumbs Way Up for Stevie!
My absolute favorite. If a better double album exists, I haven't heard it
I was thinking about this one too. Fantastic album!
Stevie was absolutely imperious during this period. There is another great album he released in 1970 which is often forgotten about - Where I'm Coming From. I also believe there is an albums worth of unreleased material recorded between Fullfillingness and Songs In The Key Of Life.
Painful to see what kind of drek he produced afterwards
Lady in red,Ebony and Ivory make me sick

OMG MIKE PORTNOY
All time favorite: Electric Light Orchestra's "Out of the Blue."
A work of true genius in every way. Jeff Lynne is incredible!
I can think of better double albums, HAL.
Was my favorite in my teens but have since cooled on it. The lyrics bring this down. Good orchestrating and vocals though
I am so glad you mentioned Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle!! That album has really grown on me over the years and is now probably in my Top 5 ProgRock albums of all time. This was really cool having Portnoy on the channel! 🤘
I did NOT expect to see you here metaljesus. Cheers!
That hour and ten minutes flew by in a flash! Now that's entertainment! Awesome Pete!
Pete, small request, can we get and episode with Mike every day along with all the other shows you make? That's not asking too much is it? All kidding aside thanks for getting together and making this video guys!
You can’t discuss Electric Ladyland without mentioning 1983, IMHO. It’s the centerpiece of a legendary double.
Exactly,Epic Epic tune.
I agree.
Love Pete, love watching his channel blow up. I always kind of lament that my friends aren't in to diving into discographies and discussing this stuff. Glad to have this community!! I learn a lot, it sends me down some great avenues to listen. Even though Pete and I are the same age, it feels like he is an older brother turning me on to great music. Cheers!! Good episode!
LOVED watching this! Thanks Pete and Mike for doing this. Please do it again.
great episode Pete, Mike is always such a cool guy, met him many times and h always has been a nice dude to talk to, he is just a nerd like all of us.
Those first two Chicago albums are a must listen

...and Mike, Blonde on Blonde by Dylan was the first double.
I love how Mike/ legend. Asks PETE if we both pick same. “ what are the rules”? Love it.
Songs in the Key of Life is an automatic pick for me. Stevie was on top of the world in '76.
Stevie had an incredible run during the '70s, with one landmark album after another: "Talking Book" (1972) #3 Pop, #1 R&B; "Innervisions" (1973) #4 Pop, #1 R&B; "Fulfillingness' First Finale" (1974) #1 Pop, #1 R&B; "Songs In the Key of Life" (1976) #1 Pop, #1 R&B. Some would say he even threw shade on Elton John during that period.
@@ronforeman2556 When Paul Simon won the Album of the Year Grammy for Still Crazy After All These Years, he thanked Stevie in his acceptance speech for not releasing an album in '75.
He’s on the top of the world for ever based on this ‘76 double release!
@@youmothershouldknow4905 Certainly "Songs ... " has never been surpassed. It is absolutely criminal that so-called "Classic Rock" ignores the Stevie Wonder oeuvre, and yet we hear Elton John's music from the same period incessantly. The Ohio Players' "Fire" album & single were #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts simultaneously in '75, and you never hear THAT landmark track on "Classic Rock" stations, either. I HATE JIM CROW RADIO!
@@ronforeman2556
From an objective view of song craft, musical sophistication, and expansive embrace of genres, SITKOL cannot be matched. It’s the pinnacle.
The White Album came with beautiful 8x10 portraits of the guys. My sister had them tacked up in her room. While I no longer have the album, I still have the pics. This was a really great show. My best friend gave me Physical Graffiti on 16th birthday, my favorite LZ album for many reasons, but mostly because I cant listen to it without reliving the day I opened it, and listened to it in my bedroom w my friends for the 1st time.
Great show! Love listening to you two talk music together. Need to have Mike back again.

It's funny how much love "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" gets. We played the entire album live at Reggie's in Chicago about 4 o 5 years ago? Sonus Umbra as the band for Brian Harris, who is a local guy that has Kieth Emerson chops, but wanted to be Elton. My favorites are the opening tracks and Grey seal. Gotta say that playing it is a lot less fun than listening to it. Especially "Jamaica Jerkoff" and some other sleepers, by which I mean I was bored, but not the audience. Some of those deep track tunes are really clever. I was surprised by the harmony in some of them.
Such a great album! (Very impressed that your band played all of it!) Yes the vocal harmonies are outstanding, the title track is an excellent example.( If I can ever get my own songs recorded, I will want to emulate those backing vocals.)
Amazing show! the LOVE of music is just POURING out of these two guys! Thanx so much for that!
This show was as epic as many of those double albums being shown!! I love listening to Portnoy talk about music and I'm not even a Dream Theater or Transatlantic fan. He is a cool dude and Pete was, once again, a most gracious host. This channel evolving into such a power house is one of the few good things that have happened in the past year, a. big thanks to Mr. Pardo for all the great content! 🤘😎
My top 10 doubles, in no particular order:
Zappa/Mothers: Freak Out
Beatles: white album
Soft Machine: Third
Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
Led Zep: Physical Graffiti
Pink Floyd: Ummagumma
Elton John:Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Todd Rundgren: Todd
The Who: Quadraphenia
George Harrison: All Things Must Pass
jthomas55: Ummagumma, thank you, thank you, for mentioning this. My god so much pot, so much riding around, for me Dark Side is thoroughly inferior. Umma...all of our summers of years listening to that, oh my. I think the only albums, that were, for me, as moving: Montrose/Montrose; Santana's Abraxas; Stones, Exile; Wishbone Ash, Argus.
Some interesting picks!😉👍
Bee Gees Odessa?!?!? Amazing that he picked that. I love that one and the Todd Rundgren album. As a drummer I went from my tired old Bonham style to a Portnoy style in the 90s. So this was nice. But when he pulled up that Bee Gees album... renewed fan ;)
I had one and had to trade it in. When Lonely Days, Lonely Nights first came on the radio, I thought it was The Beatles.
Agreed. The Bee Gees had undeniable talent .. like them or not. Harmony singing, songwriting, musicianship and diversity ..e.g. they changed dramatically to produce the 'Satuday Night Fever' sound, as yyou as a fan will know ... but I wonder if others do .. as folks do tend to listen to the 'hits' and make the poor assumption that that is what the artist 'sounds like' as Pete has covered on here before... :-)
Thou shalt not take the name of Bonham in vain!
@@mantroid Quite right .. :-) .. But, I'd let him off .. :-)
I grew up knowing The Bee Gees as a disco band. But then I saw them doing a live version of Lonely Days and women were throwing their panties on the stage. Been a huge fan ever since. Glad to see them getting some love.
Absolutely loved every single second of that interview and top 10 double album list. Hats off to you Pete for once yet again, another brilliant show....many thanks
This was so much fun. Mike Portnoy is the reason I play drums! The shared stories made this so interesting and easily one of my favorite videos. Thanks Pete and Mike!

Love these videos Pete! Meet Mike on the Images and Words Tour in San Diego and have always like him. He was so generous with his time before the show. He sprang about a half hour with me and a friend of mine talking about their first album and music. Such a class act!
Portnoy and Pardo...perfect.👍
Cream - Wheels Of Fire. First platinum double album.
Man, gotta love Mr. Portnoy for saluting Bee Gees superb 1969 album Odessa! I'm a huge Bee Gees fan and I agree with Mike. Their 3 first albums were in a Beatle esque mode and they rose to even greater heights on Odessa. Just orchestrated pop balladry at its finest. I NEED that double velvet LP edition...I have it on a nice remastered CD edition but the red velvet and Gold lettering looks really nice on the Vinyl edition.
ELO - Out of the blue. Love every tune on that double LP. My mom bought it for me for my birthday back when I was in high school. Listened to it from beginning to end MANY times. One of my favorites to this day.
Love that Jethro Tull t-shirt. Love that album.
Always great to see this guy. Monster musician and a true fan to boot.
Pete, just when it seems the SoT channel hits a peak then it goes even higher. An excellent and entertaining episode and Mike Portnoy was an outstanding co-captain, including this topic he recommended. Fun show and glad to see Rundgren’s Something/Anything in the honorable mentions as that would definitely be in my top 10. Thanks to you and especially to Mike Portnoy for such a great show. Hoping he will come back at some point for another appearance.
What an enjoyable show. Kudos to Pete for getting Portnoy on the show, and Mike was every bit as entertaining and engaging as expected. And great chemistry between Pardo and Portnoy. And a new idea was birthed - a show on Best Holy Trinity of Albums (three albums in a row that form an almost flawless output of musical and creative genius)

Another great show on Sea Of Tranquility. I am a huge fan of Mike Portnoy. I met Mike in Toronto in 2020. In Fact, it was my last concert. He was touring with Sons Of Apollo. They put on a great show. I have the actual shirt he wore that night. I also have a signed drumstick and the band signed all my S.O.A. CDs and DVD. He was a real cool guy to meet. When Metallica released "and Justice for All" in 1988, the vinyl version of it was actually a double album.
Yeah, I was surprised that Mike didn't remember that.
I had the vinyl too.

Yeah but what if they added some songs from the ‘Black’ album on ‘...Justice For All’,that maybe would of been epic
And Hardwired is a double
"....And Justice For All" was a double album on vinyl. And vinyl was still the primary format back then.
Beat me to it! I bought that on vinyl when it came out.
No it wasn't the primary format in 1989. That would be the cassette.
Justice was out in 88, that's the way I bought it... Double album....
@@sixringsho You are correct, it came out in 88. Not sure why I said 89. The last vinyl I bought back then was AC/DC Who Made Who in 86.
Yeah but it's 9 songs 65 min long. Just cause it fits on 2 vinyl LPs doesn't mean it's a double album, a double album is like 20 tracks 90+ mins. Like the wall or physical graffiti.
Great episode! Thank you Pete for bringing Mike Portnoy onto the channel. I enjoyed it very much. He would be an awesome guest on The Hudson Valley Squares!
Miss you in Dream Theater Mike. Bought the next album after you left but nothing since. It's like when Zonder left Fates I just wasn't interested any more...and I am a guitar player. We need you and Derek back for the groove and swing that you guys were developing I think. 99.98% of the time When Dream and Day Unite is my favorite piece of music of all time. Cheers!
Mike Rules! Great guy! Glad he’s finally on SOT!!!
That was a good episode. The enthusiasm that Mr portnoy had was great. Asked the rules which was cool. Hopefully he can do another one in time get him and John on together or with Mr Levin
Another excellent show! Thank you Pete and Mike. Donovan's "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" - I believe this is the first "pop" "box set" as well. Aphrodite's Child "666", Tangerine Dream "Zeit". Good call from Mike Portnoy on "Mellon Collie".
So great to have Mike Portnoy on board. True legend! My top 3 of favourite youtube channels 3. Sea of Tranquility 2. Sea of Tranquility 1. Sea of Tranquility. Keep up the great work Pete! Love it!
DO A "FAVORITE BOOTLEGS" WITH PORTNOY!!!
If Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness isn't on this list I call BS.
YES! Mike mentions it at 1:02:52 Thank god you didn't forget about it. I love most of these classics too but you cannot overlook one of the best selling double albums of all time in MCIS.
Saw them live on that tour. Awesome show. Garbage opened up for them...
Great! The best show in this series. Thank´s Mike and Pete.
Bee Gees actually had two albums before the album called "Bee Gess' 1st" at least here in Australia. Namely "The Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs" and "Spicks and Specks".
Stones: Exile
Fleetwood Mac : Tusk
Pink Floyd : The Wall
The Smashing Pumpkins: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Holy crap Pete! I was thrilled when you got Simon Phillips, now you got MP? Welcome to the big-time Pete! This is awesome!! I'm jacked!
This might be my favorite episode, I'm loving it. Thanks Pete, keep up the good work!
Always been a huge Mike Portnoy fan..... great show! I still to this day have always wondered how he can remember all the drum parts for each song...... they're complex, different time signatures and tons of feel...... it would be amazing to know how he does it. Great lists, great commentary by you both...... big fan of your show Pete
"The Lamb lies down on Broadway" Nick D'Virgillio did some ten years ago rejuvenated the album for me. And the Giraffe/Kevin Gilbert 1994 live version Mike mentioned.
Physical Graffiti is the most perfect double album.
I didn't like it much when I first heard because musically it was thier most diverse all over the place.
I really enjoy it now though.
There's not much more any rock fan could ask of any album. Hands down, not only LZ's greatest album but one the greatest for any band EVER. \m/
Saw Led Zeppelin on that tour. Listened to it a lot for awhile....haven't in long time. Just replaced most of their first five.🎶🎵🎶
Definitely peak Zeppelin, it was downhill after that especially with them reaching the height of their success and later struggling on the notorious 1977 tour.

Anybody reading this should check out Mike Oldfield's album 1978 album "Incantations." Best thing he ever did, imo. He's got rock instruments, full string and brass and woodwind sections, choir, synthesizers and keyboards, you name it. New age/multi-instrumental/progressive music at its finest.
Oldfield really is a musical genius! Excellent mention!
Great episodes with Mike, thanks for those.
