Haha, I swear, I never see anyone talk about Morbus Chron, I just showed their debut in my 10 underrated Death Metal albums video. Sweven rules as well. Great picks, Spiritual Healing is my favorite Death album. That Cryptopsy is the greatest Brutal Death metal album. Amorphis first to albums are perfection. First time watching one of your videos, I like your laid back styling :) You've earned a subscriber My personal top 10 death metal would be, in no particular order: Death - Symbolic (Gotta have that in there) Necrophagist - Epitaph (I play their stuff, hence the love for it) Suffocation - Pierced From Within (Incredibly technical, brilliantly written) Cryptopsy - None So Vile (Unbelievable album) Gorguts - Obscura (So damn weird) Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire (Ditto, Withered and Obsolete is the best song ever) Immolation - Here In After (Christ's Cage is so damn emotional sounding) Opeth - Blackwater Park (Obviously) Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream (Ditto) Decapitated - Winds Of Creation (Vogg is a MONSTER on Blessed)
Great episode as always, nice to see Amorphis getting some love. I see you stick to one album per band, which is good in that it allows you to cover more. My list shows my fandom of Death (the first band of that type I got into in the 80s), Opeth and Gojira. I picked Ghost Reveries solely based on emotional connection -- I saw them live for the first time that tour. Morbus Chron is in my alltime list, as well as Blood Incantation. Though I probably should revisit as that seems a bit high, spurred by the excitement of discovery at the time. I also have Gatecreeper's Deserted in my top 100. Usually it's hard for 21st century bands to make a dent in all-time lists as the pioneers take precedence. But I think the production didn't get totally figured out until the 90s. There's also all kinds of technical thrash metal I love from the 80s, but most of 'em sound like they were recorded in a garbage can. 1. Opeth - Ghost Reveries 2. Opeth - Blackwater Park 3. Death - Symbolic 4. Gojira - The Way Of All Flesh 5. Death - Human 6. Gojira - From Mars To Sirius 7. Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage 8. Opeth - Still Life 9. Death - Individual Thought Patterns 10. Nice list. Opeth definitely got me into death metal. Morbus chron was cool to see on here too. Im not sure which new bands you’re hinting at being not true or cheap or something (and I probably listen to a lot of them) but I will say, I have a co worker whose opinion on death metal I hold in the same regard as the friend of yours that you mentioned and I enjoy how hes pretty open to all the new “trendy” bands. He grew up with the possessed vocalist (they actually recently stopped mid set at their show in Austin when they saw him in the crowd and shouted him out) and is about as “true” as I can imagine someone who listens to the genre. His open mind and support of the momentum the genre has seen is awesome. Figured it was worth sharing that.
loved seeing bw park Nate. it was my gateway to not just death metal but opeth as a band too. deliverance, ghost reveries became instant classics to me, as well. ps. i hope to see you in munich when you come here in '24. stock xxxl shirts i like em bigger haha i'll get a bunch

Morbid Angel - Covenant 5. Resurrection - Embalmed Existence 4. Disincarnate - Dreams Of The Carrion Kind 3. Gorefest - False 2. Deicide - Legion 1. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Death is one of my top 5 all-time favorite bands, and Chuck is one of my top 5 all-time rock stars. Leprosy is not only my favorite Death album, but one of my favorite albums of all-time, period.
Both lists were great! One more that might be a good honorable mention is Tribulation's 'The Formulas of Death.' The rest of their catalog does nothing for me, but this is an absolute masterpiece.

I want to put my two cents worth in on the Possessed- Seven Churches debate. In my opinion, it is a very intense crazy thrash album with Death Metal themes.
Couldn’t agree more with Serpents of the Light. Love that record and may be their most melodic one. One of my favorite DM records of all time would is Morbid Angel- Covenant
Hey there Nate.. again you didn't suprise me with your musical taste and make me delighted by putting Spheres and Jester Race ( there is not a weak second of it :D ) into that top 10.. but I owe you a big thanks because your video I have a chance to listen Morbus Chron / Sweven.. God, what an album and how on earth that I missed this! Also what an album cover art done by Raul Gonzales.. all album is great but especially I am obsessed with the song "Towards a Dark Sky".. anyways thanks man & cheers! Speak of something different, may I suggest you to check out Pentagram aka Mezarkabul ! (not death metal)
So tough, but off the top of my head (favorites, as only a handful of these would have an argument to be on a more objective list): 1 Fear Factory - Soul... (assuming it's "death metal" enough) 2 Cannibal - The Bleeding 3 Morbid - Covenant 4 Suffo - Effigy... 5 Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade 6 Liturgy - Dawn of Ash 7 Brodequin - Instruments of Torture 8 The Berzerker - Dissimulate 9 Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption 10 SFU - Warpath
Death- Spiritual Healing Cannibal Corpse- butchered at birth. Sinister- Cross the Styx Ressurection- Embalmed Existence Suffocation- Effigy Of the Forgotten I dig the hell of out of Decapitated, Opeth and Dying Fetus, but I dont think they can be considered "Contenders" in regard to the early DM classics just because of their chronological disadvantage. SOLSTICE - debut And SEPULTURA Beneath the remains and Arise are huge from the day, but many argue that there is too much thrash in the mix to be considered Death Metal. I dont get it.
Hey man! Spirit Adrift is great im just exploring the band and i was pleasantly surprized . I like that you are situated between Sabbath/Iron Maiden and the Thrash movement of the 80s, its heavy metal that combines both.. from what i could tell from the album ''Ghost at the Gallows' - i liked Hanged Man's Revenge. The signing is also great you don't use the ugly/punk voice that thrash or death metal does.
1, Obituary-Cause Of Death. 2, Suffocation-Effigy Of The Forgotten. 3, Death-Human. 4, Deicide-Serpents Of The Light. 5, Death-Symbolic. 6, Obituary-The End Complete. 7, Cannibal Corpse-Tomb Of The Mutilated 8, Cannibal Corpse-Butchered At Birth. 9, Malevolent Creation-In Cold Blood. 10.Hateplow-The Only Law Is Survival.
I think the first record we hear is the best in our opinion. Sentimental value is important. That being said the list I have is. 1. TIE!! Cannibal Corpse - KILL and The Bleeding 2. Death - Symbolic 3. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten 4. Entombed - Left Hand Path 5. Obituary - Cause of Death 6. Carcass - Heartwork 7. Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness/Covenant 8. Cryptopsy - None So Vile 9. Gorguts - Considered Dead 10. Deicide - Legion It’s “in order” with a number, but that’s the 10, technically 12 due to two ties, but just my choices. Also go listen to OVERTHROW!
1)tomb of the militated-cannibal corpse 2)leprosy-death 3)scream bloody gore-death 4)alters of madness-morbid angel 5)slowly we rot-obituary 6)severed survival-autopsy 7)left hand path-entombed 8)seven churches-possessed 9)the bleeding-cannibal corpse 10)from beyond-massacre Honourable mentions, eaten back to life, butchered at birth, consuming impulse, human waste, human, mental funeral and realm of chaos. I definitely prefer the older gritty stuff personally.
I am also one of the weirdos who has Spiritual Healing as my favorite Death record. Its' Scott Burns greatness reminds me of Beneath the Remains, which is always a great thing.
while I might have picked a couple different records for the old school list, I'm honestly surprised there's no Necrophagia/Killjoy or Autopsy represented on it. Big Dumb Riff bands got a LOT of people into DM in the early 90s I knew I was for certain old when I was like "how you gonna mentioned anything after 1995 and call it oldshool?" Serpents of the Light is the only Deicide record I've ever really gotten into.
It's cool that you mention the Morbus Chron album. It really is a special piece of music. Great list in general, Nate! The following albums were really formative for me and still sound unique to me today: Nocturnus "The Key" 1990 Pungent Stench "Been Caught Buttering" 1991 Grave "Into the Grave" 1991 Atrocity "Hallucinations" 1990
10 - Opeth - Ghost Reveries, whatever you said about Blackwater Park, applies to that one and i just prefer Ghost Reveries. 9/10 9 - Edge of Sanity - Crimson. Hoooly shit. It has everything 9/10 8 - Death - Symbolic. It was the masterpiece of Death, i absolutely love it. 9.5/10 7 - Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness - for the absolutely same reasons you said. 9.5/10 6 - Amorphis - Tales from the thousand lakes - for the absolutely same reasons you said. 9.5/10 5 - Strapping Young Lad - Alien, is it pure Death metal? No. Is death metal a big part of it, yes, is it an absolutely insanely brutal and heavy album, yes. 10/10 4 Cryptopsy - None so Vile - absolutely the same reason as you. I only put it above Alien tho because Alien isnt entierly Death metal and this is a death metal list. 9.5/10 3 - Behemoth - Demigod - this i think is the perfect mix between Black Metal and Death metal, is it the first album to do that. It is absolutely brutal, i absolutely love it, is it a good Gateway death metal album? Hell no, do i absolutely love it, hell yes. 10/10 2 Hypocrisy - Virus. This album doesnt feel like an album to me, it feels like an experience, the structure of the album is almost like a concert, opens with a fast banger, slows down a bit, gets really brutal for a while, then it gets really soft doomie and melodic for a while, hits you right back with the brutality next and ends with a ballad. This album doesnt have a bad note in it. Peter Tägtgren deliveres the best death metal vocals, the guitar tone is amazing, the bass although quiet is audiable and it fills the void between the perfect drumming of Horgh and the guitars perfectly. 10/10 production and the lyrics on the album can be straightforward death metal lyrics, but also really deep and meaningful on other songs. Perfect album 10/10. Honorable mentions: Obituary: Slowly we rot, Deicide: Once upon the cross, Dan Swanö: Moontower. 1 - Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh. What happens when you combine Dan Swanö's Genius, Martin Axenrot's drumming, Dan Swanö's production and Peter Tägtgren's vocals? This. This is beyond Masterpiece, while nothing really interesting happens through the album, every song can be a fucking single, every singe one is a standout. The song structures of some of the songs where really ahead of their time, the guitar tone is perfect. The drumming is insane, the (second) best death metal vocal performance by Peter Tägtgren (he has done better vocals on Hypocrisy albums). The over the top lyrics, the way the album flows, it is beyond perfect, this album isn't the heaviest, the most innovative or whatever else you might come up with, yes, but it does one thing that's perfect and it's death metal. 11/10
AMORPHIS,i thought that i was the only death metal fan that i like that album a lott,i got it first in a cassette back in the 90’ s,listening to that album in that time it was like traveling on the other planets. I’m glad you like that album .
I’d have to have either Mental Funeral or Severed Survival on my list. Been Caught Buttering as well. An underrated classic is Disharmonic Orchestra’s Not To Be Undimensional Conscious. The album by Winter. Definitely the Carcass album you mentioned on your “fake” list. Atheist’s first couple albums are similar if not better than the Pestilence album. Cynic also rocks. Love those pioneering jazzy albums. Does Brujeria count as a legit band? If so I think I’m putting Matando Gueros in my list. Man death metal really peaked in the early 90s. Even shittier bands like Disincarnate put out decent efforts back then.
MATANDO GUEROS rules. Definitely death metal in my book. And yup…. Very few truly great/worthwhile death metal bands nowadays compared to the first couple waves.

Interesting perspective on Death Metal. I find that musicians like yourself have a completey different outlook on Metal than the average fan who cant play. Call me an elitist or whatever but its all subjective anyway. I've heard so many arguments about who started Death Metal and your very first album you showed, Possessed - Seven Churches started it all, like it or not. Is it the greatest hell no, but like I said its all subjective and I really enjoyed your take on the genre as well 🤘😎🍻
I definitely prefer more melodic or progressive death metal over traditional style, but Opeth are one band that never really clicked for me I just find them boring tbh.
It’s shxtty because those first ten albums you named are great albums, but are so popularized that it’s hard to enjoy them now. As for why, I feel like we as extreme metal listeners all instinctually have this “f the mainstream” mindset built in to our souls…

1. Opeth - Ghost Reveries
2. Opeth - Blackwater Park
3. Death - Symbolic
4. Gojira - The Way Of All Flesh
5. Death - Human
6. Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
7. Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage
8. Opeth - Still Life
9. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
10. Morbus Chron - Sweven
11. Death - Sound Of Perseverence
12. Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
13. Blood Incantation - Hidden History Of The Human Race
Bubbling under: Entombed, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Cynic, Malevolent Creation, Repulsion, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, At the Gates, Darkthrone, Suffocation, Autopsy, Imperial Triumphant, Hellwitch, Sadus, Dissection, Atheist, Dismember, Grave, Omnivortex.
100% agree on Dismember
Here's my list of the ten best death metal albums made in the early 90s.
10. Desultory - Into Eternity
9. Mercyless - Coloured Funeral
8. Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
7. Carcass - Heartwork
6. Morbid Angel - Covenant
5. Resurrection - Embalmed Existence
4. Disincarnate - Dreams Of The Carrion Kind
3. Gorefest - False
2. Deicide - Legion
1. Death - Individual Thought Patterns
IMO Death were a progressive metal band after Spiritual Healing. No Obituary or Entombed?
Death is one of my top 5 all-time favorite bands, and Chuck is one of my top 5 all-time rock stars. Leprosy is not only my favorite Death album, but one of my favorite albums of all-time, period.
Both lists were great! One more that might be a good honorable mention is Tribulation's 'The Formulas of Death.' The rest of their catalog does nothing for me, but this is an absolute masterpiece.
Loved it, but don't agree with In Flames... anyways, great video, enjoyed it. Merry Christmas sir
Merry Fucking Christmas Nate!!! GREAT lists AND I Second ALL of it !!!!
Top 10 DEATH METAL Albums :
10. IMMOLATION - Dawn Of Possession 5. DEMILICH - Nespithe
9. INCANTATION - Onward To Golgotha 4. DISMEMBER - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
8. CARCASS - Necroticism 3. SINISTER - Cross The Styx
7. SUFFOCATION - Effigy Of The Forgotten 2. CRYPTOPSY - None So Vile
6. PESTILENCE - Consvming Impvlse 1. MORBID ANGEL - Altars Of Madness
Any DM list without Bolt Thrower makes me cry
So tough, but off the top of my head (favorites, as only a handful of these would have an argument to be on a more objective list):
1 Fear Factory - Soul... (assuming it's "death metal" enough)
2 Cannibal - The Bleeding
3 Morbid - Covenant
4 Suffo - Effigy...
5 Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
6 Liturgy - Dawn of Ash
7 Brodequin - Instruments of Torture
8 The Berzerker - Dissimulate
9 Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption
10 SFU - Warpath
None So Vile is awesome, love the first one too. Surprising it's on your list, if you don't like slap bass. New Spirit Adrift album is great stuff!
The biggest shout out to Bloodbath. Opeth was the entry point, Nightmares Made Flesh was the destination.
Death- Spiritual Healing
Cannibal Corpse- butchered at birth.
Sinister- Cross the Styx
Ressurection- Embalmed Existence
Suffocation- Effigy Of the Forgotten
I dig the hell of out of Decapitated, Opeth and Dying Fetus, but I dont think they can be considered "Contenders" in regard to the early DM classics just because of their chronological disadvantage.
SOLSTICE - debut
And SEPULTURA Beneath the remains and Arise are huge from the day, but many argue that there is too much thrash in the mix to be considered Death Metal.
Ótimo, apoio de Portugal 🇵🇹
1, Obituary-Cause Of Death.
2, Suffocation-Effigy Of The Forgotten.
3, Death-Human.
4, Deicide-Serpents Of The Light.
5, Death-Symbolic.
6, Obituary-The End Complete.
7, Cannibal Corpse-Tomb Of The Mutilated
8, Cannibal Corpse-Butchered At Birth.
9, Malevolent Creation-In Cold Blood.
10.Hateplow-The Only Law Is Survival.
On Christmas Day, nice!
Agreed! I was lucky to see them for spiritual healing, twice, with and without James Murphy
I think the first record we hear is the best in our opinion. Sentimental value is important. That being said the list I have is.
1. TIE!! Cannibal Corpse - KILL and The Bleeding
2. Death - Symbolic
3. Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
4. Entombed - Left Hand Path
5. Obituary - Cause of Death
6. Carcass - Heartwork
7. Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness/Covenant
8. Cryptopsy - None So Vile
9. Gorguts - Considered Dead
10. Deicide - Legion
It’s “in order” with a number, but that’s the 10, technically 12 due to two ties, but just my choices.
Also go listen to OVERTHROW!
1)tomb of the militated-cannibal corpse
2)leprosy-death
3)scream bloody gore-death
4)alters of madness-morbid angel
5)slowly we rot-obituary
6)severed survival-autopsy
7)left hand path-entombed
8)seven churches-possessed
9)the bleeding-cannibal corpse
10)from beyond-massacre
Honourable mentions, eaten back to life, butchered at birth, consuming impulse, human waste, human, mental funeral and realm of chaos.
Big Dumb Riff bands got a LOT of people into DM in the early 90s
I knew I was for certain old when I was like "how you gonna mentioned anything after 1995 and call it oldshool?"
Serpents of the Light is the only Deicide record I've ever really gotten into.
Totally agree with you on Pestilence. They don’t get the plaudits they deserve. Very influential
It's cool that you mention the Morbus Chron album. It really is a special piece of music. Great list in general, Nate!
The following albums were really formative for me and still sound unique to me today:
Nocturnus "The Key" 1990
Pungent Stench "Been Caught Buttering" 1991
Grave "Into the Grave" 1991
Atrocity "Hallucinations" 1990
10 - Opeth - Ghost Reveries, whatever you said about Blackwater Park, applies to that one and i just prefer Ghost Reveries. 9/10
9 - Edge of Sanity - Crimson. Hoooly shit. It has everything 9/10
8 - Death - Symbolic. It was the masterpiece of Death, i absolutely love it. 9.5/10
7 - Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness - for the absolutely same reasons you said. 9.5/10
6 - Amorphis - Tales from the thousand lakes - for the absolutely same reasons you said. 9.5/10
5 - Strapping Young Lad - Alien, is it pure Death metal? No. Is death metal a big part of it, yes, is it an absolutely insanely brutal and heavy album, yes. 10/10
4 Cryptopsy - None so Vile - absolutely the same reason as you. I only put it above Alien tho because Alien isnt entierly Death metal and this is a death metal list. 9.5/10
3 - Behemoth - Demigod - this i think is the perfect mix between Black Metal and Death metal, is it the first album to do that. It is absolutely brutal, i absolutely love it, is it a good Gateway death metal album? Hell no, do i absolutely love it, hell yes. 10/10
2 Hypocrisy - Virus.
Great description. Truly a magical album + experience
What's 14:18 ?
Sweven / The Eternal Resonance
Spiritual healing is probably my #1
AMORPHIS, Tales from the Thousand Lakes is my favorite Death Metal album!
SINISTER "Cross The Styx"
My top 10
1. Orchid - Opeth
2. Morningrise - Opeth
3. Deliverance - Opeth
4. Blackwater Park - Opeth
5. Close to a World Below - Immolation
6. Still Life - Opeth
7. Ghost Reveries - Opeth
8. Tales From the Thousand Lakes - Amorphis
9. Scream Bloody Gore - Death
10. Netherheaven - Revocation
Orchid is pretty bad. Very pretentious song writing there, especially for the length of the songs.
So glad they improved a lot.
One of the best Death Metal albums ever. Sinister-Hate. It should always be in the top 10.
Last comment
Death is amazing. He always had great drummers too. Sean to Gene.
Deicide-Deicide, Hypocrisy-The Arrival, Nile-In Their Darkened Shrines, Opeth-Blackwater Park, Obituary-The End Complete, Cannibal Corpse-Kill, Sepultura-Arise, Vital Remains-Dechristianise, Black Breath-Sentenced to Life and At the Gates-Slaughter of the Soul.
How is there no Death…?
It’s easy to criticize in hindsight (I guess I’m one of those guys 😝). But I appreciate (almost) everyone who takes the time to voice their opinions. Whether I agree with you ? Or not? Either way you’ve got a new subscriber. Now my all time list ( in no particular order except for #1…
1. POSSESSED - Seven Churches
2. DEATH - Spiritual Healing
3. MORBID ANGEL - Covenant
4. CANNIBAL CORPSE - The Bleeding
5. CARCASS - Heartwork

DEICIDE - Legion

Death
Morbid Angel

Death again
Spiritual Healing & Human
Morbids first 3 albums and same with Entombed.
The rest sound the same too me.
I’m 47 and I got to see all of these bands live
Any Bloodbath album 🤘💀🤘
The Dismember guys are all friends with entombed. Hell they recorded albums together I believe I might be wrong.
Maybe shared equipment on it. I was an old school read the liner notes. Entombed Unleashed and Morbid Angel was my first show.
Even saw em again for Clandestine which too me is better

Number One is Left Hand Path and then everything from Death
I love Pestilence repping my home country
i am dismayed by the lack of Bolt Thrower
I Think Spiritual Healing, was a symbolic choice.
Spiritual healing, based
Fuck Yeah, Carcass is the GOAT
Interesting perspective on Death Metal. I find that musicians like yourself have a completey different outlook on Metal than the average fan who cant play. Call me an elitist or whatever but its all subjective anyway. I've heard so many arguments about who started Death Metal and your very first album you showed, Possessed - Seven Churches started it all, like it or not. Is it the greatest hell no, but like I said its all subjective and I really enjoyed your take on the genre as well 🤘😎🍻
I love Cannibal Corpse Bloodthirst
I definitely prefer more melodic or progressive death metal over traditional style, but Opeth are one band that never really clicked for me I just find them boring tbh.
Deicide decide and bloodbath ressurected through carnage.
If this is a top ten list then you should count them down from 10. Good list though.
From the few albums i have sampled in this genre the only band i can listen to is death. Some of the other stuff is just awful noise to me.
Where's Demilich?
THIS
It’s shxtty because those first ten albums you named are great albums, but are so popularized that it’s hard to enjoy them now. As for why, I feel like we as extreme metal listeners all instinctually have this “f the mainstream” mindset built in to our souls…
Deicide: Once Upon the Cross
Death to me is not death metal. They fall in the rare uncategorizable genere same as Machine Head.
Deicide Once Upon a Cross in mid in my opinion. Also Death not Death Metal?? How so?
