Right on… metal has always made me feel good and improved my quality of life. But don’t get it twisted, a lot of that metal was REALLY evil and hateful! I reckon uniting people over a mutual love of evil music is a net positive.

@@BornTooNate I agree. Music is has just as much potential to influence people for good or evil depending on the energy and intention behind it. It's like fire, where it can either cook your food or burn your house down. I seem to remember an interview with Chuck Schuldiner where he said there was too much negativity in this genre. I see metal as having the potential for almost a kind of Jungian exercise of channeling the shadow self or darker aspects of the personality into something positive. That's why when I first heard what you were doing with Spirit Adrift lyrically, I really connected with it.

I haven't gotten ANY of my pre-orders on time. The latest Necrot came within a week after it came out, and that's the BEST I've gotten. Pisses me off.

I'm not a horrible person, usually "worst" lists like this are very subjective and hopefully presented in a humorous manner instead of being mean-spirited. Was more hoping to see if the stuff you hate is similar to the stuff I hate.

I actually paused the video before you started your "thumbnail topic" to make something to eat, going over in my head how I was going to comment how brilliant it was to make that your topic, but talk about a bunch of cool shit instead for most of the video; only to come back and see you go even harder into subversion. This was great! I’m a newish listener since I heard about your podcast at Hell’s Heroes. My first episode was the Solitude Aeturnus deep dive and I’ve been hooked. I thought this episode title seemed out of character from what I’ve heard so far. You really got me! 😂

I got the High on Fire album (CD version) the day of release. Ordered it from Bandcamp so I had the digital version to listen in the morning.
Thanks for saying that. I’m still waiting for my HoF “pre-order”. Same thing happened with the latest Judas Priest. Makes me wonder what the point of preordering is.
So they can get paid before actually delivering the product. Waste of time IMO.

Man I was psyched on the new HOF. Thought it was some of their best work. Hopefully it grows on you in the future! Sometimes new albums take a while to click for me.
Thank you for mentioning the monotony Nate. I've felt like that for a few albums now. As you said their worst is still better than 95% of other's best but we can be honest about it.
I got into High On Fire around the same time you did. What I really enjoyed about this new one was it felt like alot of callbacks to older material like Art of Self Defense. That heavy punishing riff that's basically replayed throughout the entire song. I kind of miss them doing that a bit. They are nailing that with this album. I like how heavy and aggressive this album is. Sol's Golden Curse really stands out. Lightning Beard is basically everything I want out of a High On Fire song even though it might sound a bit basic.

Our lists are somewhat similar. I really like DWM though. And those tracks you mentioned are standouts for sure. I would probably lose the opener, title track, the beating, and maybe 2nd to last song. But hey… I think the black album should only be 8 songs as well. And people seem to like that record.
@@BornTooNateI completely agree with your weaker cuts but I’m trying to see if the opener hits. It’s certainly their weakest opener.
Also I chose Team Megadeth 25 years ago and fought through years of friends screaming Crush ‘Em at me. I’m in deep. I don’t even think I even remember 8 songs from the black album anymore and I’m proud of it.

You got me with the thumbnail...hook line and sinker. I was already thinking of positive counterpoints as I hit play lol. As a regular viewer this makes a lot more sense.
The few zines I did growing up I had a "no bad review policy". I only put a spotlight on what I liked
I was like, "really? This guy is going to bash bands that are not metal.. ? No one needs to hear that type of commentary." You got me. And I appreciate not hearing about non metal bands...
Necrot has quickly become one of my favorite bands. Drill the skull has been on repeat as of late.
Same thing happened when I pre-ordered the HOF on Bandcamp -- my files weren't available on release day. I've listened to it all the way through twice, and I definitely get some Pike fatigue before the end, heh. I appreciated the WHORES. EP and first album at the time, though not something I listen to often compared to Melvins. Speaking of Melvins, Tarantula Heart came out Fri. It might be their best since your fave, 2006's (A) Senile Animal. Local Austin noise legend Gary Chester (Ed Hall, WE Are the Asteroid) contributed some guitar.
Need to hear that new Melvins record. The last month or so has been kind of insane for good releases

You are absolutely right Nate. After years of not really finding any new bands, you've introduced me to at least 10 that I've been diving into.
I admit I've wasted energy trashing bands like Slaughter to Prevail and had arguments with people in a weird way of trying to defend good bands who don't get the hype they deserve. It's a pointless endeavour. Way better to try and hype the good ones

I really like Necrot. I got into them and Skeletal Remains at the same time, and have liked the releases from each of them since.
Those, and I just got the recent Worm/Dream Unending split. I like DU, but I'm really loving Worm.
I think one of the reasons for the negativity bias is that it appears to be more honest. Many positive videos are filled with diplomatic views, paid promotion etc, and it leaves the viewer uncertain of the genuineness of the views portrayed. It is a pity though. I try and combat it sometimes by clicking the "do not recommend channel" on videos that try and clickbait me through irritation.

I agree... and I will add that I'm always skeptical of a person doing an album review of music that was promo'd/advance copy to them (I'm not saying Nate does this)... but it seems to happen alot on the Tube.
If I don’t like something I get sent, I don’t talk about it. Pretty easy.

I watched the whole video cause this channel rules but I'll be honest.. the whole time I was thinking about how I was going to throwdown for my favorite childhood band slipknot. I feel enlightened and I gotta peep this new necrot album.
7th grade I got a new neighbor my age. Me and this dude would seek out everything heavy, extreme, gnarly, scary that we could get our hands on. Saw the exorcist for the first time with this dude. I remember seeing the Spit It Out music video with this dude shortly after the first album came out. It definitely made an impression. I resented slipknot and their fans for so long because everyone who thought I was weird for liking metal were suddenly wearing slipknot shirts overnight. But I’ve come to appreciate them now. Some of them songs for sure got riffs
@BornTooNate I rented the resident evil dvd from the library and watched the wait and bleed music video on it more times than rewinded the nipple scene in that movie haha.
Love the new necrot... have only listened to the new high on fire once but I already know it's definitely the weakest album but yes it's better than a lot of other people's good albums. Do you know about French Doom band Ecclesia Nate? Their second album just came out. I prefer the first album but this album is damn good too.
