Don't let this go to your head, Nate, but Ghost At The Gallows was my favorite metal record of 2023 and it wouldn't be hyperbole to say I would include it in my own list of "Perfect" albums. It's recorded and played so well and the songs just plain kill. I spent a lot of 2023 raving to anyone who would listen about the greatness of that record. The riff on Death Won't Stop Me is my personal favorite moment from it. Thanks for creating such a great album!
Thank you, that’s an absolute trip. Put a ton of work, experience, emotion, and all the rest into it. All worth it just to know there’s one person out there who feels this way about it.
I have to agree. One cd in the house and one in the car. My most played album of 2023. I’m going through some health issues and every song connected with me, and I can say I’m not normally a lyric guy.
Life of Agony-River runs Red
Deicide- Once Upon the Cross. 28 minutes of perfect death metal. I have listened to it consistently since 1995🤘
I was was able to see samothrace in New Orleans years ago. Great band.
In Flames - The Jester Race.
No Skips, only killer tuneskis.
Masters Of Reality - Master Of Reality aka The Blue Garden, just perfection.
Nate, I love your respect for the classics. Petty and Skynyrd were spot on.
RIP Bryan. Samothrace is so HEAVY. Reverence to Stone is one of my favorites as well.
To me, the perfect no-skip melodic death metal album has to be Carcass 'Heartwork', though I strangely enough love the more raw 'Necroticism' album even more.. 🤗
I liked what you said about 'Reign in Blood'; still the most effective 28 minutes in music history, I believe.. 👌
"No love lost" is definitely a skip!
Love Heartwork
So many great choices, and some unexpected ones too. Agreed on the Weezer guitar tone, and the inclusion of Boston is spot on. A few I would add across genres:
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
King Crimson - In the Court
Rush - Farewell to Kings
Third Eye Blind - self titled
Totally agree with the point around the interludes on Songs for the Deaf. I usually hate when bands put that kind of stuff on records but it’s one of the few where it works perfectly.
Some no-skippers from me:
- Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town
- Between the Buried and Me: Colors
- Skeletonwitch: Serpents Unleashed
- Shadows Fall: The War Within
One of my favorite no skip albums is (1986) Queensryche : Rage For Order. Personaly it's my favorite album from them.
Not Mindcrime ???? Blows Rage AWAY..
I think Mindcrime just beats out RFO based on their pulling off the ambitious and successful concept, but I can definitely understand liking RFO more - can't really go wrong
Tool Ænima and agree on the Weezer blue album.Agree on all of those albums🤘🏼
Yup, Tool Ænima for sure!
Great diverse list. Going to have to throw my hat in the ring for Pinkerton instead of Blue Album. That album really embodies the Powerage style of not their biggest songs, but every second is perfect.
A couple other ones off the top of my head:
Assuck - Anticapital
Doors - s/t
Diamond Head - LTTN
Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
Just wanted to thank you for recommending U.S. Christmas 👍
Never listened to them before, but had a go now in my favorite armchair and good headphones. So emotional and big sounding record. Fenomenal listening experience 😊
Awesome… glad to help facilitate that 🔮
Thanks for the Samothrace love. Also, +1000 for US Christmas. Another phenomenally underappreciated band!
I'm on board with most of your picks, but special props for U.S. Christmas! I hadn't heard ANYONE mention them in probably over a decade. My fave is Run Thick in the Night (2010) but will need to revisit both that and Eat the Low Dogs.
I don't think I can say there's a perfect no-skip album for me. That's okay, because my moods are not static. For example, my all-time favorite album is The Stooges - Fun House (1970). I've often skipped the last two tracks, the title track and "L.A. Blues" because I'm not always up for the less structured chaos. But "L.A. Blues" is still essential to what makes Fun House great. I always think about how one of the highlights of MC5 shows was their "Black to Comm," which they were too chicken to attempt to record in the studio. The Stooges, however, were fearless. They aimed to give their version of what it was like to stare into the void and lose your mind, whether it be via drugs, mental health challenges, or simply being overwhelmed by adolescent hormones and existential horror. And they f'in' did it. It ain't pretty, but it's about the closest a band has ever gotten to that sensation in the studio, and I take comfort in knowing it's there, even if I only need to dip in once a year or so.
Great list. One that comes to mind for me is Faith No More - Angeldust
When I think perfect albums, The Elephant Riders always comes to mind
Iron Maiden - Powerslave. Nuclear Assault - Handle with Care. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. Judas Priest - Painkiller. Death - Symbolic. Running Wild - Black Hand Inn.
Symbolic for sure… STILL need a vinyl copy. The only death album I don’t own
God i love your channel and i love your band brother!
Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloddy Sabath" is the one for me where I don't want to skip any songs.
Some of my favorite songs ever written... title track, National Acrobat, Killing Yourself to Live, Spiral Architect. But Fluff, Looking For Today, Who Are You keep it out of the "perfect album" category for me personally. Not bad songs at all, but not the best either. Same with Sabotage... Am I Going Insane is a pretty obvious lull in that album.
The 2000s American doom scene was insane so many good memories. I was (am) on the younger side and remember being at teenager and going to shows in garages and small dive bars seeing crushing funeral doom. I remember at the time thinking how wild it was that a genre that niche had MULTIPLE touring acts that seemed to constantly be coming through my area. One of my favs from the latter days was Lycus. Rip Spinks.
Hell yea, sounds like we had similar experiences. I was fortunate enough to be within driving distance of Downtown Music in Little Rock, which was the mid-south HQ/power center/hive for that whole scene/circuit. Formative stuff
prob obvious stuff but,
Mastodon- Crack the Skye
Lamb of God- Ashes of the Wake
Skeletonwitch- Forever Abomination
Metallica- Ride the Lightning (yes I'll be that guy)
Danzig I
Yes to these
A couple from my youth. Well maybe more than a couple. Maiden- Piece of Mind, Priest-Screaming for Vengeance, Master of Puppets, and Vulgar Display of Power. Solid list Nate, great topic. Cheers Brother!
I love Screaming For Vengeance but can't hang with Take These Chains. Same thing with Vulgar Display... there's like 30 seconds of rapping/slam poetry vocals on it that just should not exist.
No skips for me on painkiller, even the ballad a touch of evil is great imo
Absolutely on that fucking Struck By Lightning record. That shit fucking wrecks. I would actually add all 3 NAILS records to my list. And I named my daughter after that Down record. I love it that much.
Holy Diver was 1983, Slayer was 1986. Good list and I agree some of my favourite albums of all time have a skip or two on them
Gettin sloppy….. need to make you the official BRE fact checker ✅ 🫡
@@BornTooNate 😂 happy to help it’s the riffs that matter not the release date anyways 🤘
I got my CD copy of the new Crypt Sermon in the mail yesterday direct from Dark Descent. I've listened to it about four times by now. Not sure if it's my favorite, but it is damn good. I like that they've gone for longer songs on average with more exploration. Scrying Orb is extremely catchy. It's been stuck in my head since the first listen. Lots of shredding too.
Just got my vinyl today as well, gonna talk about that and the latest Tzompantli next episode.
Perfect albums in my opinion, in addition to several you mentioned.
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Doomsword - Let Battle Commence
Rainbow - Rising
Dio - Last in Line
Opeth - (up to Blackwater Park)
Immortal - At the Heart of Winter
Kreator - Phantom Antichrist
Voivod - Nothing Face
Hooded Menace - The Tritonous Bell
Vektor - Terminal Redux
Haken - Affinity
Enslaved - Utgard
Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe

Gallowbraid - Ashen Eidolon
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
John Denver - Rocky Mountain High
Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel
Dark Fortress - Venereal Dawn
Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
Etc...
Heck yeah Skynyrd!!! Workin’ for MCA is a ripper. Another fun video
BIG RIFFS in that one
Dogman by King's X, Superunknown by Soundgarden, Zeppelin IV, Dirt by Alice in Chains, Ghost at the Gallows by Spirit Adrift, too many to list...
Thank you, that’s a trip
@@BornTooNate I mean it bro. I love that new album. It's the best contemporary metal album I've heard over the last year.
Happy to see Blue Album on here. Off the top of my head I personally think The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium and Radiohead - OK Computer are damn near perfect in my book.
A few no skip albums for me are Killers Iron Maiden, Argus Wishbone Ash, Overkill Motorhead, Morning Phase Beck and Stories of the Astral Lizard The Re-Stoned.
YES on the Blue Album and Boston's debut. They are absolutely immaculate. They are both incredibly well produced.
I gotta add Cave In's Until Your Heart Stops. Its a perfect artistic statement and way beyond its time
All hail Tom Petty! Glad to see him on the list. I'd add Hypnotic Eye too.
And yay, there goes a list:
Siouxsies & the Banshees - Juju, Tinderbox
Alice Cooper - The Last Temptation
Anthrax - Among the Living
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence, Piece of Time
Captain Beyond - s/t
Deep Purple - In Rock
Night Sun - s/t
Devin Townsend - Addicted
In The Woods - Omnio
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Melvins - a senile animal
Wrathchild America - 3D
Mr Bungle - s/t
Primus - Frizzle Fry
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Strapping Young Lad - City
Rainbow Rising
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
The Wildhearts - PHUQ , 21st Century Love Songs
Cocco - Rapunzel
Oh, and the tricky one:
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
;)
Captain Beyond self titled is an all time great record. So good that I’m pretty sure sabbath mined some riffs for sabotage
Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake
100% ✅
Besides Ghost at the Gallows, I have to go with Blue Oyster Cult-Secret Treaties
Thank you
I call it Power-Age, think its a west coast thing because I definitely hear Power-Idge from most people
I’ll throw some out there that weren’t on this list a few modern ones…Outer Heaven Realms of Eternal Decay, Powertrip Nightmare Logic , Temple of Void Lords of Death, Cattle Decap Death Atlas and Misfits Earth A.D. my fav hardcore album, Megadeth Rust in Peace, Led Zep Houses of the Holy , Melvins Senile Animal, Mastodon Crack the Skye and Exhumed Death Revenge
Rust in Peace for sure, Melvins Houdini is closest to perfect for me
Nightmare Logic is perfect, spaced on that one. Earth AD is also my favorite Misfits album...
Seeing you guys ( Gatecreeper) PowerTrip and Cannibal Corpse at Saint Andrew’s one of my all time fav shows can’t believe it’s been 7 years gd time flies , slapped high fives with Riley front row never forget that night
Queensryche
: operation mindcrime is classic
Helloween : both keeper of the seven keys
Nevermore : dead heart in a dead world
Paradise lost : draconian times
All great
Rage for Order + O:M is a rare two in a row of perfect albums for me.
At the Drive In - Relationship of Command
Neurosis: Through Silver in Blood.
Opeth - Morningrise, G & R - Appetite for Destruction
OPETH....Blackwater Park, And DEATH .. Symbolic
You should bring Abbath on! Speaking of lifers...
That would be pretty wild. Dude gets down.
First WASP LP = Every song perfect
Inquisition- Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan
Oddly, Angus would refer the album as "Power Age" even tho I agree it should be "powerage" like "amperage" -- we send Bon-era AC/DC home on a stretcher with our dank slams anyway.
😂😂😂
I would say In Flames didn't just write one perfect album, Whoracle is right beside The Jester Race.
Fucking Tyler Childers! What's up with that guy? Never really cared for Country. A couple Garth Brooks songs caught my ear back in the day, but never made any regular rotation. And of course I love Cash, but I feel he kinda transcends genre-definition.
I heard a song or two of Tyler's, and now he's all over my playlists. Fucking love that dude's stuff! And it's great 'cause now I can hang out with the seemingly ever-growing fan-base for Country, and ask for Tyler Childers to be put on, and everyone's down. Good stuff. Uncanny, some times, how much our tastes seem to align.
ONE MORE....NEVERMORE " Dead Heart "
Where did you find a copy of Jester Race??! I fucking need it
I think I may have picked that and Whoracle up at Zia Records in Tempe years ago. Can't really remember. I think the old In Flames stuff just got reissued again....
