I was born and raised in Alabama, and lived there for almost thirty years, and I'm a *big* Southern rock fan! I love all of the very popular bands, such as The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and all of their classic albums, but in recent years, I have really gotten into The Outlaws, and their '75 debut album is now my favorite Southern rock album of all time! Love Wet Willie too-- funky and from Bama! 🙂

Right with you on the Outlaws being my #1 all-time. GG&HT is the one song I would have to have if I could only pick one song !

@@JohnnyRacerX I know what you mean! The guitar solos on that song *always* blow me away, no matter how many times I hear them! For me, GG&HT is the ultimate Southern rock guitar anthem-- it doesn't get any better than that! 🙂

I've heard of some of these bands. I own ZZ Topps whole discography always thought they were blues rock. I'm excited to check out the other bands. I also enjoy your album reviews.
    Thank you.

Agree about ZZ - I think what's largely 'missing' (for me) is the (significant) Country influence. I see them as a blues/rock/boogie (party) band too. That's actually primarily what to me keeps a lot of Southern bands from being Southern Rock. Then other bands who're too Country & are missing the Rock element. Like many of today's Country/crossover acts...BTW why no "Northen Rock"?🤷‍♂

Born in the south, live in the south, raised with this music and of the bands Pete mentions, saw several them before or right after they had recording contracts. One of the advantages of living in north central Florida at the time these bands came up. Can't/won't disagree with the ones listed by Pete and other commentators already posted. A genre of music that never tires for this listener. Thanks, Pete, for offering a road map for those interested in listening to this genre. But would say personal the number one choice for a newbie would be the Lynyrd Skynyrd debut. Thanks for this episode. Looking forward to the ones to come to expand the horizons in those genres.

Great vid Pete. I've always been a hard rock/heavy metal guy, but when I look back, I also listened to a lot of southern "fried" rock (as we called it in my neck of the woods). There was so many different genres of music in the 70s and 80s, with the music overlapping genres in so many of these albums, that you couldn't help listen to southern rock and loving it! Bands back then were no afraid to experiemnt and do there own thing back then. I certainly miss it and I hope folks who see this vid check these bands out. Seriously, it's great stuff, especially when sitting outside in the shade with a cold beer.

Some good choices. Southern Rock is undisputedly all American and so some of the choices like Marshal Tucker, The Allman Brothers and Charlie Daniels are more country loaded, so might not have the same appeal to those outside of the states, unless they are already big country fans.
So Molly Hatchet, ZZ-Top, 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot are the first choices that will likely appeal to the widest audience. All the choices from these bands are good jumping off points.
The other honourable mentions are also worth checking out.

Pete, couldn't agree with you more on those top 10 Southern Rockers. I have several cd's from all of them. I'm glad you mentioned ARS, because I think Ronnie Hammond had one of the best voices in Southern Rock. Speaking of which, and I'm sure that I'm in the minority on this, but I liked the later Hatchet albums with Phil McCormack on vocals. Their live album "Locked and Loaded" is fantastic. Props to the Outlaws, although it wasn't mentioned, "Bring It Back Alive" is arguably one of the best live albums ever. Thanks again for the video.

Great show Pete. I own or know well all the LPs you recommended with the exception of Blackfoot who I've been meaning to check out. I will definitely get around to it given your recommendation. While not worthy of a Top 10 Southern Rock Album slot due to lack of sales, one of my all-time Southern Rock LPs was the first Sea Level album (1977) which group included several former Allman Brother alumni. Sea Level didn't make it big, but they were very talented and exceptionally versatile. Chuck Leavell (keyboards, vocals) played a lot with Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones over the years as an unofficial band member on studio albums and part of the touring ensemble. Definitely worth a listen.

Here in Europe the southern rock they were not as popular as the rest of the styles. In America it was more popular and it's normal. I remember as a child at the end of the seventies, listening to "Blackfoot" a lot! But... the bands that created millions of southern rock fans here in Europe is the Lynyrd Skynyrd with the album "Pronounced 'Lĕh 'nérd 'Skin 'nérd" and the ZZ Top with the their first three/four releases! That's what I remember as a child then!
