You're a legend, I'm 20 and I love hard rock and metal, you helped me find amazing music that is no more passed on the radio, this music will be with me for all my life. Thank you for all this
I've been watching this channel for about 4 years now and I can't tell you how many bands and albums I've discovered thanks to Pete and this channel. My CD collection has grown significantly since I started watching SoT.
For Hard Rock: Deep Purple-Burn Black Sabbath-s/t Queen-Sheer Heart Attack kiss-s/t Alice Cooper-Killer Heep-Demons and Wizards Van Halen-s/t Scorpions-Lovedrive AC/DC-Highway to Hell Thin Lizzy-Jailbreak I'd probably add Made in Japan, because this to me represents Hard rock at its peak. Cheers.
My list: 1. Queen - A Night At The Opera 2. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell 3. The Who - Who's Next 4. The Cult - Sonic Temple 5. Foghat - Live 6. Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever 7. Boston - Self-Titled 8. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic 9. AC/DC - Back In Black 10. Michael Stanley Band - Heartland Honorable Mentions: 11. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet 12. Queen - Greatest Hits (either version will do) 13. Foreigner - Double Vision 14. Deep Purple - Machine Head I decided to go with Heartland because it seems to be the easiest to find out of all Michael Stanley CD's. If you can't find this one, then I'll recommend Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd as my alternative for #10.
That's a really good list, Pete! I'm 66 and the LP that truly blew me away personally was the Montrose debut one. 50+ years later.....still sounds fresh. Tomorrow, I'm gonna get on my "bad motor scooter...and ride."
1. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix Experience 2. The Doors - The Doors 3. Led Zepp II - Zeppelin 4. Machine Head - Deep Purple 5. Toys in the Attic - Aerosmith 6. Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy 7. Van Halen - Van Halen 8. Back in Black - AC/DC 9. Appetite for Destruction - GnR 10. Nevermind - Nirvana
3:17 Pete's list SPOILER ALERT 1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? 2. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV 3. Deep Purple - Machine Head 4. Montrose - Montrose 5. KISS - KISS 6. Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent 7. Aerosmith - Rocks 8. Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak 9. Van Halen - Van Halen 10. Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (11. Def Leppard - High 'n' Dry)
Idk how GnR got on this list. They are Heavy Metal. They came out in late Eighties which was the end of Heavy Metal. You missed 2112. But I know you'll put them in Prog Hard Rock. They need to be in both.
My 10: Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced Black Sabbath - Paranoid Led Zeppelin - IV The Who - Who's Next Deep Purple - Machine Head Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Bad Company - Bad Company Status Quo - Quo Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
I don't want to upset Pete and I don't necessarily disagree with his choices... for this reason i wrote ten albums i started to love hard rock when i was about 10 years old! These are purely my personal choices and suggestions for newbies... 1.Scorpions - "In Trance", 2.Deep Purple - "Machine Head", 3.Led Zeppelin - "IV" or "II" (doesn't matter), 4.Thin Lizzy - "Johnny the Fox", 5.Uriah Heep - "Look at Yourself", 6.Whitesnake - "Ready an' Willing", 7.Rainbow - "Long Live Rock 'n Roll", 8.Bad Company - "Selftitled", 9.UFO - "Lights Out", 10. AC/DC - "Highway to Hell" or "Let There Be Rock" (doesn't matter).
My list: Deep Purple - Machine Head Led Zeppelin - IV Black Sabbath - Vol. 4 Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny Scorpions - Love at First Sting Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Van Halen - 1984 Def Leppard - Pyromania
UFO: Strangers In The Night basically a live best of. A great place for someone to get into UFO. I agree with Machine Head and Led Zeppelin IV ..great solid hard rock albums.
Before i heard your list I had these down as well: Deep Purple - Machine Head Led Zeppelin - 4 Kiss - Kiss Van Halen - Van Halen Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak GnR - Appetite for Destruction I would replace the other albums with these: Queen - A Night at the Opera BOC - Fire of Unknown Origin The Who - Quadrophenia Cream - Disraeli Gears Once again same with AC/DC at the time High 'n' Dry was technically considered metal (NWOBHM) so on that basis it made my metal list. Peace out.
Hats off to Pete for including G n' R even though he's not a fan, it was big of him. He was absolutely right to, but he doesn't have to like them, even if I bloody love them. To those of you who are new to him, he's a man of great taste who's got me into a good few bands, such as Atomic Rooster, Gentle Giant and Manfred Mann's Earthband among others. Superb.
1) Deep Purple - Deepest Purple 2) Bad Company - Bad Company 3) UFO - Phenomenom 4) Uriah Heep - Live 1973 5) UFO - Strangers in the Night 6) UFO - Lights Out 7) Kansas - Two for the Show 8) Rainbow - On Stage 9) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gold & Platinum 10) Kiss - Double Platinum
I discovered this channel during the lockdown, and in addition to learning about bands that weren't on my radar back in the day like budgie or gentle giant and deep diving into well known bands like Journey say. But what i really love is Petes passion + normal guy delivery. Not condescending not pretentious, just a guy shooting the shit over all kinds of music. An episode like this re-affirms.
Live at Leeds-The Who Climbing-Mountain Rides Again-James Gang Love it to Death-Alice Cooper Fun House-The Stooges Brain Capers-Mott the Hoople E Pluribus Unum-Grand Funk Railroad Lights Out-UFO Smokin-Humble Pie Boston -debut
Pete, you are such a credit to our community. As long as we e been a subscriber, we can’t ever recall a bad video. Great guests and segments chopped full of information. We especially enjoy your work with Martin Popoff! Keep up the great work!🎧🙏🏻🎸🥁
1) Hanoi Rocks - Two Steps From The Move 2) Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic 3) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Stories 4) Led Zeppelin - 4 5) Black Sabbath - Master of Reality 6) AC/DC - Back in Black 7) ZZ Top - Tres Hombres 8] Neil Young - Live Rust 9) Jimi Hendrix - Electric Landlady 10) Pink Floyd - The Wall
Really enjoyed this. My ten for newbies to rock would be: Black Sabbath - Paranoid Deep Purple -Machine Head Status Quo - Hello AC/DC - Back In Black Rainbow - Rising Judas Priest - British Steel Iron Maiden - Killers Big Country - The Buffalo Skinners Rose Tattoo - Assault And Battery Gillan - Glory Road Sorry there's no U.S. bands, just think these ten are rock music at it's best.
I really got properly introduced to hard rock in the late 80s when I was like 10/11. That was when my brother came home from college with all of his hair metal CDs, and it was listening to those and other bands he was into like AC/DC and Zeppelin and Van Halen that really propelled me into hard rock and metal. Some of the first albums that I ever bought with my own money in 89/90 included Zeppelin IV, Appetite, the first two Boston albums, Van Halen I, and BOC’s Agents of Fortune, all hard rock classics. And then albums I didn’t buy until years later because I was always borrowing them from my brother instead: High & Dry and Pyromania, Pat Benatar’s Crimes of Passion, Zeppelin II, Moving Pictures, and Who’s Next. Some of his CDs I listened to more than he did!
Chronologically… Zeppelin 2 James Gang Rides Again Who’s Next Machine Head We’re An American Band KISS Ted Nugent Jailbreak Boston Van Halen Honorable Mentions - Toys in the Attic Montrose Are You Experienced Killers - Alice Cooper Master of Reality
That's a great list, and I'm really glad you chose Appetite for Destruction, as that is a huge example of essential 80's hard rock. As far as Def Leppard goes, I would send newbies to Pyromania before High and Dry, for the same reason you chose Machine Head over In Rock for this list. Pyromania is still pretty hard rocking, but it's got more of their iconic songs. I do agree with Pete's choice for Kiss album, but a good follow up recommendation would definitely be Destroyer. Same thing with Led Zeppelin, with Led Zep II being the logical follow up. There are other great hard rock albums I could mention, but I got a feeling that Pete might include them in some of his other lists.
Good list Pete, I would have had a few different... in no order... The Who - Who's Next AC/DC - Back in Black Van Halen - s/t Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Ragged Glory Led Zeppelin - IV Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic Pearl Jam - Ten Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak Deep Purple - Machine Head Boston - s/t
1. Aerosmith "Toys In The Attic" 2. Kiss "Kiss" 3. Deep Purple "MachineHead" 4. Uriah Heep "Demons and Wizards" 5. Europe "Wings Of Tomorrow" 6. Van Halen "2" 7. UFO "Lights Out" 8. Queen "News Of The World" 9. Montrose "Montrose" 10. Guns and Roses "Appetite For Destruction" also need to mention BOSTON "BOSTON" Sorry put this together in 5 minutes. Didn't know about til it was almost over..
For hard rock I'll go with: AC/DC - Back in Black Aerosmith - Rocks Van Halen - Debut Boston - Debut Deep Purple - Machine Head Led Zeppelin - IV Kiss - Destroyer UFO - Obsession BOC - FIre of Unknown Origin Bad Co. - Debut
Great show, man...here is where i am heading this second 1. Alice Cooper-School's Out 2. Zeppelin 4 3.AC/DC-Back in Black 4. Jimi Hendrix-Are you experienced? 5. Van Halen 1 6. Van Halen 2 7. Guns Appetite for Dest. 8. Zeppelin 2 9. Pink Floyd-The Wall 10. Pear Jam-10 Keep up the good work, man! Rock on
I recently subscribed to your channel. I saw your video on the 20 albums that changed your life and it got myself thinking about what I would answer. I really enjoy the way you talk about music and all of your anecdotes. Looking forward to more great content :)! My choices for this topic would be: Kiss - Destroyer Black Sabbath - Paranoid Deep Purple - In Rock BOC - Self Titled Guns n' Roses - Appetite for destruction Rainbow - Rising UFO - Flying Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz Ghost - Impera (I know this isn't even considered hard rock nor it's from the same time but in my opinon it reflects so much about the music of that era, I find it to be some kind of tribute)
1. Made in Japan / Deep Purple 2. Rainbow Rising / Rainbow 3. Live and Dangerous / Thin Lizzy 4. Strangers in the Night / UFO 5. Led Zeppelin 4 6. Highway to Hell / AC DC 7. Overkill / Motorhead 8. Mr Universe / Gillan 9. Vol 4 / Black Sabbath 10. Earthquake / Electric Sun
Some I would put in a list are; Back in black - AC/DC Razamanaz - Nazareth Force it - UFO Tyranny and mutation - Blue Oyster Cult Not Fragile - Bachman Turner overdrive.
Cool series Pete !! As a hard rock lover I would recommend 1 Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? 2 Steppenwolf - Debut album 3 Jeff Beck Group - Truth 4 Led Zeppelin l 5 & 6 Grand Funk Railroad - On Time / Red Album both 1969 7 The Who - Live at Leeds (original 6 tunes) 8 Deep Purple - Machine Head 9 Blue Oyster Cult - Tyranny & Mutation 10 Van Halen - Debut album
AWESOME PETE!! i agree with these classic & iconic picks, certainly must have for all newbies! shit, there's 50 more that could be picked along with these-lolol. i agree and am glad you touched on it and find it funny how over time how some albums/bands have somewhat changed from what we thought or knew them to be back in the day to what some have come to be to us as we've aged ,but, also the fact that music has changed as well since those days of our youth, a lot of these were certainly considered heavy metal in every way when we were young, but as music has progressed ,or however one looks at it, over the years with the birth of all the much harder & heavier death, doom, thrash metal etc. some have seemed to have matured or aged more into the hard rock than metal. when i was younger back then, ac/dc was totally heavy, heavy metal and now at my age at 56yo i consider them hard rock, it's all great! and i get it, and to each his own and like you say, there's now right or wrong brother. it's always great to hear your opinions on it Pete and i value them so much my friend as we come from the same era. i just don't dig the music snobs that think there way is the only way and set in stone, i know you get a lot of that. but we get it brother, we dig it! great show Pete!! SOT ROCKS!!! \m/ \m/
Thumbs up for someone finally mentioning Gary Moore! 👍😃 I guess you're from Europe since Gary Moore is unfortunately pretty unknown in the US while he was a big deal on the other side of the pond.
One of my top 2 favourite genres. My picks for a newbie - Riot: Narita (most underrated band of all time) - Led Zeppelin: IV - AC/DC: Powerage - Aerosmith: Rocks - Montrose: Montrose - Van Halen: Van Halen - Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak - UFO: Lights Out - Deep Purple: Machine Head - Motörhead: Ace of Spades
Great list. Yeah, Ted Nugent was the definition of hard rock guitar. Way under appreciated. In the '70s, hard to find someone who could match him in bluesy shredding. He was shredding even before there was shredding. My list: Aerosmith - Rocks UFO - Lights out Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak The Babys - Head first ZZ Top - Tres Hombres Alice Cooper - Billion dollar babies Blue Oyster Cult - Agents of fortune KIss - (The first one) Molly Hatchet - Flirtin with disaster
@@resistor27 I was 14 in 1977. That's when Cat Scratch Fever came out. They didnt have that term "Heavy Metal" back then when describing bands. Only Rock and Hard Rock, really. The heaviest stuff was called hard rock. Judas Priest Hellbent for leather was probably the first legit heavy metal album. I know some will say early black sabbath. But I don recall anyone calling them heavy metal. The only reference to heavy metal was in born to be wild. But they werent talking about the music. They were referring to the engine of the motorcycle.
Awesome. I love Mr. Pardo and his insight and passion. Pete and his SOT channel has turned me on to so much great music and artists. I am so glad Pete included the Motor City Madman. Listen to Double Live Gonzo at the campfire/beach party/deer camp/ Wango Tango Barbeque with a cold beverage. Rock on
Led Zeppelin - IV Alice Cooper - Killer Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic AC/DC - Let There Be Rock Van Halen - Van Halen Boston - Boston David Bowie - The rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust MC5 - Kick Out The Jams Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs
Tough to list just 10, but I Would suggest: Boston - Boston Queen - A Night At The Opera AC/DC - Back In Black Van Halen - Van Halen Deep Purple - Machine Head Kiss - Destroyer UFO - Lights Out Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog Cheap Trick - Dream police Aerosmith - Rocks
I enjoy playing along with these. My list, based on the prompt, before watching Pete's choices: Are You Experienced by the Jimi Hendrix Experience Back for the Attack by Dokken Burn by Deep Purple Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy Kiss by Kiss Nevermind by Nirvana Slide It In by Whitesnake Songs for the Deaf by Queens of the Stone Age Who's Next by the Who
Great picks Pete. The Ted Templeman VH 1 and Montrose - Montrose, both on my list as well as is Led Zeppelin 4 and the Jimi Hendrix Experience of course too! These are some of the best records ever made to my mind!
My Top 10 (In no particular order) 1. AC/DC - Highway to Hell 2. BOC - Fire of Unknown Origin 3. Riot - Fire Down Under 4. Aerosmith - Rocks 5. Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning 6. Van Halen - Van Halen 7. UFO - Lights Out 8. Scorpions - Lovedrive 9. Sweet - Desolation Boulevard 10. Boston - Boston
Tell me everything you know about Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning!!! I recently went back to check out more Thin Lizzy because I only knew the radio hits and this album blew me away! It was their last album unfortunately and the reviews seemed mixed? but I love it! I think it's underrated and it would of been interesting to see what would of happened with Thin Lizzy if Phil hadn't died. Would they have kept going in the almost Thrash Metal style of Thunder and Lightning? would they have kept getting heavier? I think Thin Lizzy could of gone in so many directions. Definitely one of the bands that I thought was way underrated/forgotten as I've gone back to listen to their back catalogue that I didn't grow up with.
I really dislike T&L, disappointing album but I LOVE The Holy War at least. Overall though the band is so underrated and worthy of chasing up their history.
@@SuperDenonciateur I don't disagree that their a Metal band. However younger listeners might not think that they are compared to how heavy music is today. Heavy Metal or Hard Rock the band deserves to be recommended to anyone not familiar with their music and that's what I was going for.
My list........... 1. Black Sabbath Sabotage 2. Led Zeppelin II 3. Van Halen 1 4. UFO Strangers in the Night 4. Kiss - Rock and Roll Over 5. Aerosmith Rocks 6. AC/DC Back in Black 7. Rainbow Rising 8. Deep Purple Made in Japan 9. Michael Schenker - MSG 10. Queen News of the World
Aerosmith Rocks Led Zeppelin 2 Montrose debut UFO-Strangers Van Halen debut Triumph -Allied Forces AC/DC Black in Black Thin Lizzy Jailbreak Cheap Trick In Color Kiss Alive
I'm picking 1. Are You Experienced-The Jimi Hendrix Experience. 2. Montrose-Montrose. 3. Made In Japan-Deep Purple. 4. Secret Treaties-Blue Oyster Cult. 5. Bridge Of Sighs-Robin Trower. 6. Physical Graffiti-Led Zeppelin. 7. Double Live Gonzo-Ted Nugent. 8. Strangers In The Night-UFO. 9. Van Halen-Van Halen. 10. Highway To Hell-AC/DC. 11. Rocks-Aerosmith.
My list would be something like this: Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV Alice Cooper - Love it to Death Deep Purple - Machine Head Kiss- Destroyer Aerosmith - Rocks Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak AC/DC - Back in Black Van Halen - 1984 Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction Skid Row - Skid Row
Personally I'm going with the albums that got ME into hard rock and truly helped to create that love for me: Boston - Boston Van Halen I - Van Halen Toys In The Attic - Aerosmith Highway To Hell - AC/DC Destroyer - Kiss (Alive! if allowed) Appetite For Destruction - Guns 'N Roses Pronounced' Leh 'Nerd 'Skin 'Nerd - Lynyrd Skynyrd Willie And The Poor Boys - Creedence Clearwater Revival Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin The Ultimate Sin - Ozzy Osbourne Honorable Mentions: Sammy Hagar or Street Machine - Sammy Hagar Night Moves - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
I was 70% in agreement with Pete on his heavy metal newbie list (I was one of those people bitching about including Rainbow as a metal band). I'm 100% in agreement here. I couldn't come up with a real argument against any of these albums for this list. Thanks, Pete.
1- Grand Funk - red album 2- Black Sabbath - paranoid 3- Uriah heep - demons and wizards 4- Deep purple- machine head 5- Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak 6- Rainbow - rising 7- Cinderella- long cold winter 8- Van Halen- women and children first 9- scorpions- lovedrive 10- AC/DC - fly on the wall I could add Kiss, UFO, Budgie and just so many more but for a newbie 🤔 they'll find their way....
Montrose, Montrose, #1. My all time favorite bar none. #2 Ted Nugent Stranglehold.. #3 Bad Compàny, Bad Company #4 Aerosmith, Get your Wings #5 Jimmy Hendrix, are you experience #6 Led Zeppelin, Physical graffiti 7 Blue Oyster cult, On your feet or on your knees #8 A,C,D,C Powerage #9 Pat Travers, Makin Magic #10 Rush, Fly by Night .
Deep Purple Made in Japan-Cream Wheels of Fire-Hendrix ElecLadyLand-Jethro Tull Benefit-Thin Lizzy Jailbreak -Led Zeppelin 2-Areosmith Rocks-Ozzy Diary of a Madman- Alice in Chains Dirt..The Tea Party Edges of Twilight
1. Kiss-Alive 2 (I put Alive on Metal) 2. Aerosmith-Rocks 3. Led Zep-4 4.QOTSA- Songs For The Deaf 5. GnR- AFD 6. Monster Magnet- Powertrip 7. Def Leppard- Pyromania. (Had High and Dry but it's a little too close to AC/DC and it's more of a pop-hard rock for newbies.) 8. AC/DC - Highway to Hell 9. Van Halen- Women and Childen First 10. Motley Crue- Too Fast For Love. I feel like I got a decent combo of old and newer and a bit of variation in styles of "Hard Rock" that could lead a new listener to what they would like about hard rock and pursue further for future recommendations.
WOW, good to see someone with some serious smarts...love ALL that B.O.C. stuff still, and especially, CAPTAIN BEYOND!!! Every few days I put on the 1st record and play the drums to it...a timeless masterpiece that's SO underrated. BTW, Ian Gillian's cool, but Rod Evans was the coolest!
Wow---what a friggin great list. Of all the "lists' out there, this earn very high marks (even the honorable mentions). All of these albums are uniquely off the chain. I had to pause Pete's video to go into a separate computer window, bring up the albums as mentioned, and pretend I heard them for the first time. Something from UFO and AC/DC did belong in the honorable mentions.
1) Grand Funk (The Red Album) by Grand Funk Railroad (1969) 2) Band of Gypsys (Live) by Jimi Hendrix (1970) 3) Machine Head by Deep Purple (1972) 4) RazAmaNaz by Nazareth (1973) 5) Not Fragile by Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1974) 6) In For the Kill by Budgie (1974) 7) Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin (1975) 8) Ted Nugent (self-titled debut) by Ted Nugent (1975) 9) Rising by Rainbow (1976) 10) Van Halen (self-titled debut) by Van Halen (1978)
I completely forgot about Grand Funk.🤦♀And I just couldn't decide who to drop in favor of Nugent. Hopefully Pete does a "Canadian Bands for Hosers" and I can add BTO.
Hi Gary, hope you're well - nice to touch base again! Interesting list, but some of yours and Pete's will come up fir me when he does the classic rock selection he mentioned at the end. I think he said it might be thrash next, though...
@@iainhead9898 Hi Iain, this will be an interesting series - a very fine line between some of the categories. I'll try to participate in each of the upcoming episodes......Gremlins permitting!
I definitely have a great starter list for a newbie to rock music 1 scorpions black out 2 deep purple machine head 3 Reo speedwagon high infidelity 4 Ted nugent 1975debut 5 Led Zeppelin 4 6 montrose 1973 debut 7 Van Halen 8 Robin trower bridge of sighs 9 survivor eye of the tiger 10 kiss debut
Riot-Fire Down Under, Rose Tattoo-s/t, ACDC-Powerage, Blackfoot-Strikes, Triumph-Allied Forces, Def Leppard-Pyromania, Slade-Slayed?, Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards, Cactus-One Way Or Another, Y&T-Earthshaker.
To name a few… Deep Purple - Machine Head Alice Cooper - Killer Iron Butterfly - In A Gada Da Bida Credence - Pendulum Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps Chicago - most early albums Doobie Brothers - Best of Doobies Grand Funk Railroad - We’re an American Band …
Great list, but I’d have to include something by UFO - probably Strangers in the Night - because it has so many of their great songs and the best versions. Very much a straight down the line heavy rock band.
That's cheating - like picking a greatest hits album!!! 😊 TBH, those double live albums of the seventies - Strangers, Alive 1 and 2, Double Live Gonzo etc. are my favourite albums of all time - back when live albums weren't fillers to the fans and you could live the excitement. Waiting for his video on these....
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced Montrose (1973) Kiss (1974) Bad Company (1974) Nazareth - Hair of the Dog Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak Blue Oyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin Scorpions - Blackout Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
You talking hard rock, not really heavy metal, maybe not the easiest thing to choose, but I believe my top ten list would (probably) be like this: 10. Led Zeppelin - IV 9. UFO - Lights out 8. Alice Cooper - Welcome to my nightmare 7. Scorpions - Taken by force 6 Black Sabbath - Vol. IV 5. Uriah Heep - Magician´s birthday 4. Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock 3. Aerosmith - Rocks 2. Deep Purple - Burn 1. Rainbow - Rainbow Rising
Solid list, I have most of those albums on vinyl, need to track down a copy of Montrose. A couple of suggestions with newbies in mind Led Zeppelin II. Definitely. I have every Led Zep studio album and I can't pick a single favorite. If I could only keep one, it would be The Song Remains The Same, but If I had to pick one for someone not already a fan, it would be Led Zeppelin II If I wanted to introduce someone to Aerosmith, it would have to be Toys in the Attic. Rocks would be a great follow up album but I think Toys has had more longevity. I was a huge Kiss fan in my early teens, I still every album up to Creatures Of the Night including the solos, but the only Kiss album anyone really needs is Alive. A few albums not on your list that any newbie would be happy to acquire: Boston - Boston The Sweet - Desolation Boulevard Bad Company - Bad Company Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath or Paranoid Nazareth - Razamanaz or Hair Of The Dog Triumph - Thunder Seven The Cult - Sonic Temple or Love Def Leppard - Pyromania AC/DC - Highway to Hell Scorpions - Blackout The Tragically Hip - Up to Here
I am 48 years old. And all the stuff that Pete has shown in this video is the ones that I got when I first started collecting when I was younger. I like shows like these because I am always discovering bands and artists that I haven't try before. So a lot of these videos helps someone discover great music.
I already knew Thin Lizzy but after listening to several albums, I went to listen the Jailbreak record not expecting a big deal, it was a shock as it was and still is soooo goood, great songs, great production.
For me it's easy, if I need to recommend (70's) Hard-Rock to Newbie's, I just point them out to the the legendary Live albums from that time. In my opinion there's no better way to taste Hard-Rock on vinyl or CD. Just make a random pick of 10 album out of this list, and you're good for a real treat of essential hard-rock listening! MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (1969) Iron Butterfly - Live (1970) Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf Live (1970) The Who - Live at Leeds (1970) Grand Funk Railroad - Live Album (1970) Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys (1970) Humble Pie - Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore (1971) Deep Purple - Made in Japan (1972) Uriah Heep - Live (1973) Wishbone Ash - Live Dates (1973) KISS - Alive! (1975) (or Alive II) Blue Öyster Cult - On Your Feet or on Your Knees (1975) Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same (1976) Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More From The Road (1976) Rush - All The World’s A Stage (1976) Foghat - Live (1977) Rainbow - On Stage (1977) REO Speedwagon - Live: You Get What You Play For (1977) Alice Cooper - The Alice Cooper Show (1977) Aerosmith - Live! Bootleg (1978) AC/DC - If You Want Blood, You've Got It (1978) Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo! (1978) Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes (1978) Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous (1978) Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live (1978) Cheap Trick - Cheap Trick At Budokan (1979) Pat Travers Band - Live! Go for What You Know (1979) Queen - Live Killers (1979) UFO - Strangers in the Night (1979) Whitesnake - Live.... in the Heart of the City (1980) Journey - Captured (1981) The Michael Schenker Group - One Night at Budokan (1982) Blackfoot - Highway Song Live (1982) Boston - Out In The Street (Live 1977) (2022) *Judas Priest - Unleased in the East (1979) *This album is an exception for me. It's the best illustration of the difference between hard rock/proto-metal and pure Heavy Metal as we understand it now. (Just compare the studio versions with these ones).
Great list, Pete. I would add… 1. ‘Snakes In The Playground’ by Bride, 2. ‘Battle Cries’ by The Brave, and 3. ‘In Your Face’ by Ken Tamplin (Sammy Hagar’s cousin). God bless and Rock on!
Basically you're talking cornerstones. Naturally the '70s will feature prominently, probably to the detriment of other eras. I'd be curious to see you list your 10 cornerstone hard rock records of the past 30(ish) years. Would it include, say, Alice in Chains "Dirt"? Not that you asked, but since it's a record I don't know if you'd consider, but Queens of the Stone Age "Songs for the Deaf" is probably the most influential hard rock record of the past 25 years, and I mean in terms of it being a heavy contemporary influence on contemporary musicians. Many of the notable rock artists I work with cite that band and that record as a modern lodestar. I think that's because QOTSA is a band that found a way to add new elements, texture and style to a genre many thought was exhausted of ideas. One well-known producer I know, who is also a member of an arena-level rock band cites the album as one he steers younger players to, it's a bar-setter. Another Gen X hard rock record that strikes a chord with millennials is Deftones "White Pony." Faith No More probably deserves mention. Soundgarden. Rage Against the Machine. I'd also argue that Metallica's black album is the watershed moment where metal and hard rock became one in the same from a commercial, radio standpoint. Musically, it has more hard rock elements on paper. But sonically it's what initiated and defined heavy metal for the casuals. Ask your average Price Is Right contestant to name a metal song and they'll probably say "Enter Sandman," which is a hard rock song through and through -- riffs, tempo, structure, chorus, production, etc.
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King GnR - Appetite for Destruction Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? (Typed it before I saw Pete picked it too) Jethro Tull - Aqualung Cream - Disraeli Gears BOC - Agents of Fortune Wishbone Ash - Argus Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry Europe - The Final Countdown
Thanks Pete for a great episode. For me the best way to enjoy music to the max is the experience of a live concert. Then (most) bands and musicians are at their peak. Therefore, for newbies and oldbies, I recommend -if available- live albums. So Deep Purple’s Made in Japan before (the studio versions of) Machine Head. 1. Deep Purple Made in Japan 2. Rainbow On Stage 3. AC/DC If you want blood you’ve got it 4. Jimi Hendrix Hendrix in the West 5. The Rolling Stones Get yer ya-ya’s out 6. Deep Purple Made In Europe 7. Uriah Heep Live 8. 10 studio albums that are absolutely ESSENTIAL for any HR newbie: 1. Thin Lizzy - Black Rose 2. Van Halen - s/t 3. AC/DC - Highway To Hell 4. Rush - Moving Pctures 5. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 6. Deep Purple - Burn 7. UFO - Obsesson 8. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres 9. Sweet - Desolation Boulevard (US version) 10. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
Pete's is from an American perspective, in particular Aerosmith,Kiss, Ted Nigent and Montrose, four bands who where virtually unknown outside the US continent when those two albums where released. I wouldn't consider them essential hard rock albums. From my UK perspective these are essential! Budgie-Never Turn Your Back On A Freind. Led Zeppelin - 2 Uriah Heep-Look At Yourself Bad Company-Straight Shooter Deep Purple-Machine Head Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath UFO-Lights Out Scorpions-Lovedrive Thin Lizzy- Jailbreak Free-Tons & Sobs

Rush- Moving Pictures. Led Zeppelin IV ACDC Back in Black Boston- Debut Van Halen- 1984 Guns and Roses- Appetite for Destruction The Who- Who's next Soundgarden- Super Unknown Def Leppard- Pyromania Cream - Disraeli Gears Some more (I could take out Boston since many would not consider it Hard rock and replace with Jimi Hendrix). The Jimi Hendrix Experience- Are You Experienced Foreigner - Four
Great list. As a Brit I may have included some more British albums, but your choices were all justified. Always amazes me how early that Montrose album was.
Loving this "starter pack" premise, Pete. There are always new people coming to new genres and fans need to understand the value of these shows to the uninitiated. Well done, sir
I would go for Steppenwolf's debut and self-titled album, Machine Head, which stands, Def Leppard's Hysteria, Use Your Illusion 1, Nickelback's Here and Now, Dark Horse or For All the Right Reasons, Van Halen's 1984, 5150, or OU812, Sammy Hagar's VOA, Standing Hampton, or Three Lock Box, Aerosmith's Nine Lives or their debut album, and Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak album. I have a lot of rock albums where anyone could just go for a first listen. I would also add Hair of the Dog, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Boston, Scorpions' Black Out, Judas Priest's Angel of Retribution, Screaming for Vengeance, or even Painkiller. Hell, Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare is also one I would also recommend. There's so many albums that a list is just too damn hard to make.
With metal it's easy, with hard rock not so much. 70's hard rock is completely different than the 80's hard rock. Not too many 80's hard rock fans enjoy Jimi Hendrix Experience let alone if it's hard rock, to me it's not. As for the 70's hard rock I'd recommend: Black Sabbath (Paranoid), Alice Cooper (Billion Dollar Babies), Kiss (Alive), Blue Oyster Cult (Secret Treaties), Van Halen (VH1), AC/DC (Highway to Hell), Nazareth (No Mean City), Scorpions (Virgin Killer). As for Kiss the best one to start is Alive, that's for sure. You got best songs from the first album on that one. And many more.
My list of must have records: rainbow Rising, ac/dc flick of switch, Ozzy Diary of a madman, judas Priest screamingforvengeance, mettalica master of puppets, iron maiden live after death, metal church debut album, deep purple perfect strangers, Wayne's Metal Church, motley crue theater of pain, Van halen 1984, Rush 212, motor head orgasmatron
Bachman-Turner Overdrive: "Not Fragile" and " Four Wheel Drive" - two of the very best hard rock albums of all time. Blue Oyster Cult: "Some Enchanted Evening." One of the best hard rock live albums of all time.
You're a legend, I'm 20 and I love hard rock and metal, you helped me find amazing music that is no more passed on the radio, this music will be with me for all my life.
Thank you for all this
Haha pretty similar here, nineteen almost 20 ane a lot of stuff has been an SOT recommendation
I've been watching this channel for about 4 years now and I can't tell you how many bands and albums I've discovered thanks to Pete and this channel. My CD collection has grown significantly since I started watching SoT.
Hey fellow 20 year old! This channel has introduced me to so much great music! Love this community and channel all the damn time!
I discover a lot of albums from listening your channel, thanks so much!
Great to see you young cats on here and keeping the metal going with us older dudes and chicks.
For Hard Rock:
Deep Purple-Burn
Black Sabbath-s/t
Queen-Sheer Heart Attack
kiss-s/t
Alice Cooper-Killer
Heep-Demons and Wizards
Van Halen-s/t
Scorpions-Lovedrive
AC/DC-Highway to Hell
Thin Lizzy-Jailbreak
I'd probably add Made in Japan, because this to me represents Hard rock at its peak.
Cheers.
Great list , growing up listing all those classic hard rock
UFO - Lights Out
Yes! My favorite UFO album!
Prefer phenomenon
@@brucedickinson12They're both great! 😅
UFO's a must, but for me, it's Force It on top.
Strangers in the Night - live versions of many of the band’s best tunes. Michael Schenker knocks itnout of the park.
Another great show from Pete, I’m a 71 year old prog rocker from the UK who loves your shows, thank you.
My list:
1. Queen - A Night At The Opera
2. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
3. The Who - Who's Next
4. The Cult - Sonic Temple
5. Foghat - Live
6. Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
7. Boston - Self-Titled
8. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
9. AC/DC - Back In Black
10. Michael Stanley Band - Heartland
Honorable Mentions:
11. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
12. Queen - Greatest Hits (either version will do)
13. Foreigner - Double Vision
14. Deep Purple - Machine Head
I decided to go with Heartland because it seems to be the easiest to find out of all Michael Stanley CD's. If you can't find this one, then I'll recommend Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd as my alternative for #10.
Go Steelers!
The Cult? Never Hard Rock in a month of Sundays. Also... no Rainbow? A much superior Blackmore project to Deep Purple.
Glad you mentioned Glam at the end because Sweet's Desolation Boulevard was arguably a classic hard rock album too . . .
That's a really good list, Pete! I'm 66 and the LP that truly blew me away personally was the Montrose debut one. 50+ years later.....still sounds fresh. Tomorrow, I'm gonna get on my "bad motor scooter...and ride."
You nailed it. Great album was blasting it one day at the house and someone called the police.
We wore this out back in the day. Space Station #5 . R.I.P. Ronnie Montrose you are missed. Also try GAMMA very good !
@@markoliver630 Oh, I had all of the Gamma LP's! I've also really enjoyed his Open Fire solo LP as well!

@@Swullmark Imagine thinking that posting a timestamp in a comment forces people to click it 😂
2112. How could you forget that?
Idk how GnR got on this list. They are Heavy Metal. They came out in late Eighties which was the end of Heavy Metal. You missed 2112. But I know you'll put them in Prog Hard Rock. They need to be in both.
My 10:
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Led Zeppelin - IV
The Who - Who's Next
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced
Bad Company - Bad Company
Status Quo - Quo
Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic
AC/DC - Let There Be Rock
I don't want to upset Pete and I don't necessarily disagree with his choices... for this reason i wrote ten albums i started to love hard rock when i was about 10 years old! These are purely my personal choices and suggestions for newbies...
1.Scorpions - "In Trance", 2.Deep Purple - "Machine Head", 3.Led Zeppelin - "IV" or "II" (doesn't matter), 4.Thin Lizzy - "Johnny the Fox", 5.Uriah Heep - "Look at Yourself",
6.Whitesnake - "Ready an' Willing", 7.Rainbow - "Long Live Rock 'n Roll", 8.Bad Company - "Selftitled", 9.UFO - "Lights Out", 10. AC/DC - "Highway to Hell" or "Let There Be Rock" (doesn't matter).

Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Scorpions - Love at First Sting
Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation
Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
Van Halen - 1984
Def Leppard - Pyromania
UFO: Strangers In The Night basically a live best of. A great place for someone to get into UFO.
I agree with Machine Head and Led Zeppelin IV ..great solid hard rock albums.
Absolutely. Strangers in the Night was the first UFO album I got, and it remains my favorite from the band.
Before i heard your list I had these down as well:
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Led Zeppelin - 4
Kiss - Kiss
Van Halen - Van Halen
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
GnR - Appetite for Destruction
I would replace the other albums with these:
Queen - A Night at the Opera
BOC - Fire of Unknown Origin
The Who - Quadrophenia
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Once again same with AC/DC at the time High 'n' Dry was technically considered metal (NWOBHM) so on that basis it made my metal list.
Superb.
1) Deep Purple - Deepest Purple
2) Bad Company - Bad Company
3) UFO - Phenomenom
4) Uriah Heep - Live 1973
5) UFO - Strangers in the Night
6) UFO - Lights Out
7) Kansas - Two for the Show
8) Rainbow - On Stage
9) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gold & Platinum
10) Kiss - Double Platinum

I discovered this channel during the lockdown, and in addition to learning about bands that weren't on my radar back in the day like budgie or gentle giant and deep diving into well known bands like Journey say. But what i really love is Petes passion + normal guy delivery. Not condescending not pretentious, just a guy shooting the shit over all kinds of music.

Rides Again-James Gang
Love it to Death-Alice Cooper
Fun House-The Stooges
Brain Capers-Mott the Hoople
E Pluribus Unum-Grand Funk Railroad
Lights Out-UFO

04) Virgin Killer (Scorpions, 1976)

10) Pink Floyd - The Wall
Hanoi Rocks had so much promise to break big in the U.S.
Two Steps from the Move is a killer album.
Rest in Peace, Razzle.
My first album was
Cheap Trick - Same,
still one of my favourites!
Really enjoyed this. My ten for newbies to rock would be:
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deep Purple -Machine Head
Status Quo - Hello
AC/DC - Back In Black
Rainbow - Rising
Judas Priest - British Steel
Iron Maiden - Killers
Big Country - The Buffalo Skinners
Rose Tattoo - Assault And Battery
Gillan - Glory Road
Sorry there's no U.S. bands, just think these ten are rock music at it's best.
Chronologically…
Zeppelin 2
James Gang Rides Again
Who’s Next
Machine Head
We’re An American Band
KISS
Ted Nugent
Jailbreak
Boston
Van Halen
Honorable Mentions -
Toys in the Attic
Montrose
Are You Experienced
Killers - Alice Cooper
Master of Reality
The Who - Who's Next
AC/DC - Back in Black

I recently subscribed to your channel. I saw your video on the 20 albums that changed your life and it got myself thinking about what I would answer. I really enjoy the way you talk about music and all of your anecdotes. Looking forward to more great content :)!
My choices for this topic would be:
Kiss - Destroyer
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Deep Purple - In Rock
BOC - Self Titled
Guns n' Roses - Appetite for destruction
Rainbow - Rising
UFO - Flying
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz
Ghost - Impera (I know this isn't even considered hard rock nor it's from the same time but in my opinon it reflects so much about the music of that era, I find it to be some kind of tribute)
nice deep cut with "Flying"
Grand Funk
Impera isn't hard rock? Melodic hard rock to me for sure, and absolutely awesome.
1. Made in Japan / Deep Purple

My top 5 would be:
AC/DC-Back In Black
Gary Moore-Run For Cover
Thin Lizzy-Live & Dangerous
Whitesnake-Lovehunter
Scorpions-Love At First Sting
Thumbs up for someone finally mentioning Gary Moore! 👍😃
I guess you're from Europe since Gary Moore is unfortunately pretty unknown in the US while he was a big deal on the other side of the pond.
One of my top 2 favourite genres. My picks for a newbie
- Riot: Narita (most underrated band of all time)
- Led Zeppelin: IV
- AC/DC: Powerage
- Aerosmith: Rocks
- Montrose: Montrose
- Van Halen: Van Halen
- Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak
- UFO: Lights Out
- Deep Purple: Machine Head
- Motörhead: Ace of Spades
Great list. Yeah, Ted Nugent was the definition of hard rock guitar. Way under appreciated. In the '70s, hard to find someone who could match him in bluesy shredding. He was shredding even before there was shredding.
My list:
Aerosmith - Rocks
UFO - Lights out
Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
The Babys - Head first
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
Alice Cooper - Billion dollar babies
Blue Oyster Cult - Agents of fortune
KIss - (The first one)
Molly Hatchet - Flirtin with disaster
The thing is, on the write up on his self titled debut, they call him a metal guitarist!

Hey from Vladivostok! Thanks for your true-hearted love to music! Mine was “I Hope You Like It”, Geordie. I was around 7 yrs old)
Ah, Geordie. Back when Brian used to actually sing.
1. Kiss-Alive 2 (I put Alive on Metal)
2. Aerosmith-Rocks
3. Led Zep-4
4.QOTSA- Songs For The Deaf
5. GnR- AFD
6. Monster Magnet- Powertrip
7. Def Leppard- Pyromania. (Had High and Dry but it's a little too close to AC/DC and it's more of a pop-hard rock for newbies.)
8. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
9. Van Halen- Women and Childen First
10. Motley Crue- Too Fast For Love.
I feel like I got a decent combo of old and newer and a bit of variation in styles of "Hard Rock" that could lead a new listener to what they would like about hard rock and pursue further for future recommendations.
BOC - Tyranny & Mutation
BOC - Secret Treaties
Captain Beyond - S/T
BOC - Fire of Unknown Origin
BOC - S/T
Jericho - S/T
BOC - Spectres
BOC - Cultosaurus Erectus
Budgie - Budgie
Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You
Lol. As a huge BOC fan I agree. 😃
@@aldebaran4154 It works for me too, especially if I’m in a BOC mood, what a great band AND currently what a great band!
Haha, great list!
I miss BÖC Imaginos!
“Who’s Next ” belongs here. However you classify it… one of the greatest!! Period! from first note to last!
I think Who's Next is the greatest rock album of all time. But even though they rock hard, I'm not sure I would call it hard rock.
Who’s Next and Led Zeppelin IV are the two greatest things ever made.
My favorite album of all time! Not a single even mediocre song. It was definitely hard rock for the time in 1971. Hard to believe it's 53 years young.
1) Grand Funk (The Red Album) by Grand Funk Railroad (1969)
2) Band of Gypsys (Live) by Jimi Hendrix (1970)
3) Machine Head by Deep Purple (1972)
4) RazAmaNaz by Nazareth (1973)
5) Not Fragile by Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1974)
6) In For the Kill by Budgie (1974)
7) Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin (1975)
8) Ted Nugent (self-titled debut) by Ted Nugent (1975)
9) Rising by Rainbow (1976)
10) Van Halen (self-titled debut) by Van Halen (1978)
I completely forgot about Grand Funk.🤦♀And I just couldn't decide who to drop in favor of Nugent. Hopefully Pete does a "Canadian Bands for Hosers" and I can add BTO.
@@independenceltd. We could call it Hoser Rock, eh!?
Hi Gary, hope you're well - nice to touch base again! Interesting list, but some of yours and Pete's will come up fir me when he does the classic rock selection he mentioned at the end. I think he said it might be thrash next, though...
@@iainhead9898 Hi Iain, this will be an interesting series - a very fine line between some of the categories. I'll try to participate in each of the upcoming episodes......Gremlins permitting!
@@garyh.238 it's just cool to be trading opinions again. Looking forward to the next one - if it IS thrash, my list is ready!
I know it's a little outside of the usual SoT strike zone, but a Blues Albums for a newbie would also make for a fantastic episode.
now you've given him an excuse to do a jazz fusion list too 🙄
Absolutely. Hard rock and heavy metal are based on the blues.
I agree with your picks. Def Leppard High and Dry is a great one. Also Cheap Trick in Color.
Riot-Fire Down Under, Rose Tattoo-s/t, ACDC-Powerage, Blackfoot-Strikes, Triumph-Allied Forces, Def Leppard-Pyromania, Slade-Slayed?, Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards, Cactus-One Way Or Another, Y&T-Earthshaker.
To name a few…
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Alice Cooper - Killer
Iron Butterfly - In A Gada Da Bida
Credence - Pendulum
Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps
Chicago - most early albums
Doobie Brothers - Best of Doobies
Grand Funk Railroad - We’re an American Band
…
Perfect list for newbies, Pete!
All mandatory. All killer. 🔥
Great list and series! As you said, there's a lot of fine lines and crossovers between heavy metal and hard rock, but all essential.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced
Montrose (1973)
Kiss (1974)
Bad Company (1974)

Hi Independence FANTASTIC list.. Not a bad one all are great choices.. Nazereth is the best one that i forgot and also BOC.. Goodnight..
You talking hard rock, not really heavy metal, maybe not the easiest thing to choose, but I believe my top ten list would (probably) be like this:
10. Led Zeppelin - IV
9. UFO - Lights out
8. Alice Cooper - Welcome to my nightmare
7. Scorpions - Taken by force
6 Black Sabbath - Vol. IV
5. Uriah Heep - Magician´s birthday
4. Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock
3. Aerosmith - Rocks
2. Deep Purple - Burn
1. Rainbow - Rainbow Rising
Solid list, I have most of those albums on vinyl, need to track down a copy of Montrose. A couple of suggestions with newbies in mind
Led Zeppelin II. Definitely. I have every Led Zep studio album and I can't pick a single favorite. If I could only keep one, it would be The Song Remains The Same, but If I had to pick one for someone not already a fan, it would be Led Zeppelin II
If I wanted to introduce someone to Aerosmith, it would have to be Toys in the Attic. Rocks would be a great follow up album but I think Toys has had more longevity.
I was a huge Kiss fan in my early teens, I still every album up to Creatures Of the Night including the solos, but the only Kiss album anyone really needs is Alive.
A few albums not on your list that any newbie would be happy to acquire:
Boston - Boston
The Sweet - Desolation Boulevard
Bad Company - Bad Company
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath or Paranoid
Nazareth - Razamanaz or Hair Of The Dog
Triumph - Thunder Seven
The Cult - Sonic Temple or Love
Def Leppard - Pyromania
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Scorpions - Blackout
The Tragically Hip - Up to Here
I am 48 years old. And all the stuff that Pete has shown in this video is the ones that I got when I first started collecting when I was younger. I like shows like these because I am always discovering bands and artists that I haven't try before. So a lot of these videos helps someone discover great music.
Fully agree on GNR never a fan but agree on the impact they had .
R.I.P. Eric Carmen of The Raspberries. What a LEGEND!
Hey Pete really enjoyed this episode !
MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (1969)
Iron Butterfly - Live (1970)

Blackfoot - Highway Song Live (1982)
Boston - Out In The Street (Live 1977) (2022)
*Judas Priest - Unleased in the East (1979)
*This album is an exception for me. It's the best illustration of the difference between hard rock/proto-metal and pure Heavy Metal as we understand it now. (Just compare the studio versions with these ones).
Toys in the Attic was the one that did it for me.
Great list, Pete. I would add…
1. ‘Snakes In The Playground’ by Bride,
2. ‘Battle Cries’ by The Brave, and
Great list of beginner hard rock albums. Do you consider Boston a hard rock band or a regular rock band? I think they are regular rock band.
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
GnR - Appetite for Destruction
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced? (Typed it before I saw Pete picked it too)
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
Cream - Disraeli Gears
BOC - Agents of Fortune
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry
Europe - The Final Countdown
Fair play picking appetite for destruction Pete.I’m no newbie but am enjoying your picks so far and looking forward to your future picks.
1. Deep Purple Made in Japan
2. Rainbow On Stage
3. AC/DC If you want blood you’ve got it
4. Jimi Hendrix Hendrix in the West
5. The Rolling Stones Get yer ya-ya’s out
6. Deep Purple Made In Europe
7. Uriah Heep Live
8. Golden Earring Live
9. Cream Wheels of fire
10. Iggy and the Stooges Raw Power 50th Anniversary which includes live concert october ‘73

10 studio albums that are absolutely ESSENTIAL for any HR newbie:

3. AC/DC - Highway To Hell
4. Rush - Moving Pctures
5. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
6. Deep Purple - Burn
7. UFO - Obsesson
8. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
9. Sweet - Desolation Boulevard (US version)
Led Zeppelin - 2
Uriah Heep-Look At Yourself
Bad Company-Straight Shooter
Deep Purple-Machine Head
Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Van Halen- 1984
Guns and Roses- Appetite for Destruction
The Who- Who's next
Soundgarden- Super Unknown
Def Leppard- Pyromania
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Some more (I could take out Boston since many would not consider it Hard rock and replace with Jimi Hendrix).
The Jimi Hendrix Experience- Are You Experienced
Foreigner - Four
Great list. As a Brit I may have included some more British albums, but your choices were all justified. Always amazes me how early that Montrose album was.
Loving this "starter pack" premise, Pete. There are always new people coming to new genres and fans need to understand the value of these shows to the uninitiated. Well done, sir
Great pics got them all
I would go for Steppenwolf's debut and self-titled album, Machine Head, which stands, Def Leppard's Hysteria, Use Your Illusion 1, Nickelback's Here and Now, Dark Horse or For All the Right Reasons, Van Halen's 1984, 5150, or OU812, Sammy Hagar's VOA, Standing Hampton, or Three Lock Box, Aerosmith's Nine Lives or their debut album, and Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak album.
This video is spot on the only change i would make is switching Montrose with Def Leppard but that's just because im not a Sammy Hagar fan
Thanks, Pete. I added a couple of missing albums to my collection: Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak and Aerosmith's Rocks.
FOGHAT - FOOL FOR THE CITY 🤘
I just bought 3 of the 11 cds back in the day... 70s 80s ... very good you included KISS in the rank my fave band...
