I had to tolerate Bruce 2x: once when he came on stage as an encore here in Philly, at JFK stadium (R.I.P.), during U2's "Joshua Tree" tour in 1987. Again, at Peter Gabriel's Amnesty International concert (also at JFK Stadium) 1988. He is in my hat trick of "talent-less hacks": Bruce, Jimmy Boo-Fay (Buffett), and KI$$.
@@phillipb9328 No, He came on stage at JFK Stadium during U2s "Joshua Tree" tour and sang the encore with them,... Sam Cooke's "Stand By Me". As I was still only 15, or so, I turned to my Mom and said,. "TAKE ME HOME,... NOW!!!"
I agree....the Stones were allowing him to butcher Memory Motel on the 98 -99 tours.....they finally played the song in Bremen on that tour without him and Jagger says...." no Dave Matthews...??"......yeah Mick.....thank God.....
I was with you every step of the way, but then you hit REM. You gotta understand that their hits (which often were indeed sappy) all came after they moved to Warner Brothers for one of the biggest advances ever at that time. Their indie stuff on IRS remains some of the most gorgeous and unique music of the 1980's; enigmatic, elegiac, energetic, well-played and arranged, and unlike anyone active at the time (and the Byrds/Velvets comparisons were very overcooked). Any of their first four albums could make my top-10 lifetime favorites. Not for everyone, I suppose. Oh, and that Dylan guy sure is good (except for a few disasters). But the rest of your list could have easily been my own.
True Story: Bob Dylan asked Slash to play guitar on one of his tracks in the mid-90s. The released version of the song had the Slash solo cut out .. according to Dylan: 'it sounded too much like GnR' .. lol :)
Dylan between 62 and 1978 was astounding . After that , embarrassing at best . I also used to hate the voice . I changed my mind . I now LOVE his singing on most of those albums . Give the King another chance !
Sometimes voices just grate on people and I get that. I really hate Elvis Costello's voice and actually Mick Jagger has never done it for me either but that's just our personal ear and I don't fault anyone who can stand them. I personally love a lot of Dylan's singing through the years and he seems to have rubbed off on Tom Petty significantly. cheers
@@ddzyne I like Jaggers vocals , but then the 1960's for me is a big deal . I like RADIO RADIO by Costello but he hasnt done anything good for decades . That Ive ever heard .
My intro to Dylan was the covers are great, Dylan's version - not as much. I changed my mind. I even prefer All Along the Watchtower by Dylan over Hendrix now. And when you put into context 1965 what Dylan had going on with Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar, he was pretty hard rocking by the standard of the time.
Same here, I don't like a single artist mentioned by Pete. Motley Crue at #1 have a few cool songs but at least someone like Blackie Lawless could be called a real musician which is why he's in W.A.S.P. and not Motley Crue, I guess. Alice Cooper once said there's a danger to Crue that he liked, he was probably speaking about their early days and bad boy image. Another band I don't get, is Radiohead and U2 lost me decades ago, haven't listened to them since 1985.
The first two albums are great and I’ve noticed a lot of hard core heavy metal fans like those two. After those two is when people’s opinions start to change
I have to add U2 to the list if I hear the start of I still havent found what Im looking for I cant change the station fast enough god I hate that fucking song.Good list thanks for the laughs !!
Their first 2 albums were really good, but, they lost me when 'War' came out and every song was killed for me because of radio-overplay. I never was interested in anything else they released after that due to their poppier sound.
Those are not SPAM calls. They are Eminem, REM, Motley Crue, Poison, and the ghost of Kurt Cobain calling to cuss you out. But you never answer, so instead they are leaving thumbs-downs.
Michael Stipe calling Pete: "Consider this, Pete: Oh, mine, is bigger. It's longer than yours and a little bit thicker. The length that I will go to, is the distance in your eyes. Oh no, I've said too much. I'll get it up... Okay, well, this just got awkward. I'm hanging up now. Stop talking about me, Pete!"
As a person who actually does like quite a lot of the artists here, this was honestly kind of a nice change of pace. It's nice to hear differing opinions y'know?
I agree! Twisted Sister and Dokken are the only 2 hair metal bands that I can stand. I don't understand how people worship Crue. They're sloppy, disgusting, drugged up, sexed-up, and misogynistic. What confuses me about bands like Motley, Poison, and other hair bands is that they had this stylistic idea that was like... "We're so masculine that we don't even need to look like men." Ughh!!! The REAL metal bands of the 80s were Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Metallica, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, etc. Iron Maiden is AWESOME! 🤘, Motley Crue is TRASH! 👎

I mean I like stuff like Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate alot. But KISS's music never resonated with me personally. I'm sure many disagree with me and that's fine. Everyone likes the music they like for certain reasons.
@@ObsidianBlaze9 I understand you. From modern perspective you would expect from their image that Kiss are into black metal. But the fact is when they appeared in 74' they called them American Black Sabbath - loud, hard music, shocking image, candles and fire...many religious groups protested against them, they had to cancel some tours in South America...they have their part in rock evolution, it took some time for some genres to be born. For example, i really like Bathory, but I dont care much for Venom and Mercyful Fate, although I know they had influence on many great bands.
The thing with KISS is: listen to Paul Stanley's songs and skip most of the Gene Simmons tunes. Paul was an excellent glam rock singer and songwriter up until around 2000. Gene was always an average singer with a croaky voice and his songwriting extremely generic (with a few exceptions of course like Unholy and his songs on Lick It Up).

@@larrynolletti4594 *'That's just your opinion man!' vs 'The facts are the facts?!'* Like I said give us a break. Your moralyzing self praise and arrogance are enormous. Still it must make life simpler living in a world of self serving delusions. I've read poetry from the Roman poet Catullus written 2000 years ago about how the youth of his day were less moral than when he was young, lacked respect for their elders, drank too much wine, made too much noise and stayed up partying too late. In the 70's we had heroin and Jimmy Page with 13 year old girls. We are INDIVIDUALS; every generation! Perhaps you should join a monastery and become a monk!
The reason a lot of bands in the 90s irritate people like you and me is because they were "products." Their image, their music, was all designed by formulae that record companies felt was attractive to young people based on a whole host of things that had been tried before. The antihero front man, a tragic figure struggling to keep his bangs out of his face as well as addiction. That sort of thing. When Generation Y rediscovered the Beatles, then every British pop group had to have a vocalist that whined like Lennon. I was dragged around to so many of these concerts in the 90s and early 2000s, and wanted to puke everytime I would see the whole audience jump up and down like my 8-year-old when I would tell him we're going to an amusement park. That jumping thing was a specific kind of behavior for fans of skater rock and pop punk of the era, like headbanging and "devil horns" were for metal, I guess. But anyway, you named all the bands and kind of music that drives me nuts. I also agree about Bob Dylan, but I must confess that his later albums, when he started growling more like Dr. John, really have started to grow on me. Thanks for the fun show and the memories!
I *knew* I wouldn't have to scroll very far to see smashmouth on this list. Cringeworthy crap that always made me want to take an ice pick to the speakers.
I certainly appreciate Nirvana and Pearl Jam for their influence, but in the grunge world, in my opinion, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and of course Soundgarden all put out more substanstive and musically interesting albums.
Yeah, I was really hoping that he would mention his opinion on STP and Alice in chains, and Soundgarden. Those bands are really the only 90s bands that have stuck with me past my 90s phase in high school. Also strangely my guilty pleasure band is the gin blossoms.
Ten is an all time classic, but they gradually grew less interesting after that, although they continued to be a great live band. I never really got into Nirvana at all, and don't understand their godlike status. Smashing Pumpkins was one of the better bands of that era too, again, for a short time. And jane's Addiction..those first two albums, amazing.
Steven Homan Yeah the Gins get some surprising attention from metal heads. The Black Moods are from Scottsdale as well. Not metal but very bluesy and like able. Talent. That helps.
The biggest disaster for the hard rock of the 80's has a name ... it's called Bon Jovi. Very bad influence on many historical bands who wanted to follow the new silly trend. Hair from the hairdresser, clothes fancy with strass, stupid posing and boring compositions. Bon Jovi for me ... WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE!!
Nah, Bon Jovi had a great guitar player and they are basically the Beatles of Hair Metal. Bon Jovi spend decades as the most popular band on the planet, far beyond just the united states. Half the planet HATES Bon Jovi. Half the planet LOVES Bon Jovi. But *everyone* knows the words. Which is pretty much check mate. Whatever measure of success you want to use, Bon Jovi resoundly wins. Sigh.
Their first 2 albums were great. They captured what it was like to be young in the mid-90s. And for 2,3 years Noel had an incredible run as a songwriter writing sing along anthems, that connected with their audience in a special way. After that they lost their magic unfortunately and never really developed musically.
Yeah, Five Finger Death Punch need to go away. The most generic sound out there right now. They have to rely on nostalgic cover songs to keep people interested in them.
I feel like the 30-40 year old dads who beat their wife and kids whenever the Patriots lose a game definitely listen to Five Finger Death Punch (Inb4 that one FFDP fan that’s gunna reply to me saying “HeY I LiStEn To fIvE FiNGeR DeATH PuNCH aNd I NevER HuRT muH kIDS”)
I agree with each and every one of these. I would add to that list Hootie and the Blowfish, the Indigo Girls, and Coldplay. The 90s, in general, had very little that I enjoyed as well, punk is musical anathema to me and pop punk is hell on earth. That was the first decade where I completely tuned out the contemporary and the mainstream and listened solely to prog, fusion, and older music.
I have always respected punk for its cultural impact and historical legacy. Musically, however, no other genre has tried so hard to convince everyone that you don't need to know how to play instruments to start a musical revolution.
I saw Nickelback at a festival years ago and the show was in a parking lot and 20 minutes into their set several people had to be transported to the hospital for splitting their heads on the pavement and the lead singer told us we were all idiots - like 4 or 5 people represented the intelligence of the entire crowd...I was blown away by the music (they were new then, not tired and old) but I never liked them after he insulted us.
I never liked them. Over here in the UK they were huge a few years back. Everybody talking about how brilliant they were constantly. I was just thinking they suck so bad and the guy can’t sing. Not good live either from what I’ve heard.
axl rose is an anagram of oral sex. they got ahead of themselves by use your illusion, it turned to toss. i actually laughed hearing civil war where axl says 'what's so civil about war anyway!?
There are some good songs on appetite imo but they are way overrated. Half the songs on the use your illusion albums are complete garbage. So they made at best 2 decent albums. I don't get why they get so much credit. Right place right time.
@@colgrey438 To me it's like Nirvana, people credit them with bringing in alternative rock and grunge when bands like Soundgarden and many others had been doing it for years. They just brought it to the mainstream in the 90's. Nirvana is a bit different in that Cobain died so that further cemented their status but they were hailed as if they created alternative rock and grunge when they didn't. Same with Guns and Roses, it was the late 80's, hair metal was in and so they were credited with bringing back real hard rock to the mainstream. Right place, right time. Neither band is exceptional in my view.
One band I’d add to that list... Coldplay. Surely they have to be the most irritating, bland, boring slush. Chris Martin’s singing is so nasal. An interesting list and I agree with most. Glad you got Oasis in there, never got them. I think what adds to their annoyance is the Gallagher brothers are a pair of yobs, what we call in Scotland “neds” who just got lucky.
Another terrible band, I remember seeing them on the second stage at ozzfest and saw kids going nuts - I was listening to Blind Guardian and Emperor at the time thinking how much talent these people were missing out on.
I like some of their songs, mostly the ones that made it to promo videos. Most came from one of their early 2000's albums. "Before I forget," Sulfur, and Duality. Those songs seemed to be songs, propelled by their style. Their other tunes seem to be more about style.
Same here. People want to make him the Southern Beach Boy or something. Just a beach bum that’s stuffed to many burgers down his cheese hole. But add steel drums and people think he’s genius. Other than that I like him.
My wife always says, "Don't yuck someone else's yum". So, I bite my tongue when someone excitedly tells me that they are going to see some band that I don't share their enthusiasm for. What I dislike the most is when a band gets over-the-top hype, with fans who constantly worship them as music gods. But, that said, I usually have to bite my tongue and avoid rolling my eyes for one simple reason; these hyped-up bands make many people happy. That's what music is for. Pop artists are popular because they give people the simple music that makes those people smile. Why should I complain about that? At the very least, I can keep my pompous opinions to myself. Because even my progressive rock friends don't agree on their favorite bands. It's all subjective opinions.
I think the the same.snd would add Aerosmith, Guns N Roses and the hair acts too. Long live Ritchie Blackmore with Purple and Rainbow, Dire Straits, Rory Gallagher, Rush, UFO, Budgie, the NWoBHM movement, Sabbath, Priest, Motörhead, Riot, Scorpions and their friends
Agree. People say the band ended when Slash left, but I actually think they fell apart earlier, when Izzy left. Izzy told a story about one show where Steve Adler was unable to play, so the drummer for Cinderella filled in. He said the guy was technically perfect, but the songs sounded like crap because the drummer lacked the special swing that Steve used to give them. If you watch early concert footage, you can tell that Izzy played a huge role in keeping the band tight.
To appreciate Dylan you have to look past his “singing”. As a fan myself, he can’t sing. I’ll be the first to admit it. It’s the message his lyrics carry, the influence he’s had on other artists and popular culture. His songwriting is on another level. His lyricism is insanely good. Honestly, I usually listen to covers of his songs by other artists, but I guess that’s the appeal for most (at least to me anyways.)
L.T. W- clearly there’s more to music than the pitch and timbre of the lead vocals. Dude won the Nobel prize for his lyrics not his voice lol. Just imagine Pavarotti singing “Like a Rolling Stone.” Or Josh Groban singing “Buckets of Rain.” No thanks I’ll stick with Dylan’s version.
I remember when I was in the Navy way back in 2004 some guy tried to give me a free Nickleback CD. I told him, 'No thanks. I don't like Nickleback.' He looked absolutely shocked lol
I hated Radiohead then I loved them and then after 2003 I grew to despise them. Thom Yorke whines like a girl. The Smashing Pumpkins I despise. I get pissed when people say I look like the closet sausage jockey Corgan (I prefer singers with testosterone). I'm with you Pete, I despise Alternative Rock. Funny REM story, a girl I had the hots for in college named Kristen was a huge REM fan and we both loved classic rock and she was mortified when I said I rather listen to Headhunter by Krokus than REM and I responded "I prefer music with thundering drums, screaming vocals, guitar solos" and she laughed.
@@patriciofernandez2711 yeah I I dont dislike REM, they had a few classics , "what's the frequency Kenneth" etc. I never really got the Nirvana thing, I do think they were over rated, but Dylan didn't try to go there, even his bad stuff is good, LOL
@@patfraser3869 I can't say I dig everything Dylan has done, but his best years were absolutely godlike. Even in his "bad" period he had some jaw-dropping songs like "Born in Time" or "Jokerman", stuff that would be the signature songs of lesser songwriters but were little more than b-sides for Bob. He is that good.
The man can turn a phrase like no one else, and bring a kind of reality to his lyrics in the same way that Tom Waits or Neil Young can. The lyrics hit home quite often because he does lack polish and harmony. Like Bentley says above-his voice hits the music. If anyone came to me and said “I don’t get Dylan, he sound terrible”, I’d just say “read the lyrics and listen to the lyrics”.
For me, U2's good music lasts up through Achtung Baby in '91 whereas REM starts to go south by about '89 with vapid pop songs like "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People." I agree REM's first 4 to 5 albums are excellent... especially Murmur and Reckoning, those are worth having in any music collection.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Zooropa and Pop had some good songs as well. I didn't think U2 started getting overly "commercial" until All That You Can't Leave Behind came out.
@@mrmysterion5533 Agree. REM had such great early albums. They were college rock when I was in college. When alternative was real. Everything after Fables is almost like a different band. Yet Pete loves Alice in Chains, who were easily the most depressing of the grunge bands. "Don't Follow" is the perfect example- beautiful guitar work, but it's the most depressing song in existence. Far more depressing than anything Nirvana did.
Damn bro....You nailed this. I agree 100% with you here. I would add that many of those shit buttrock bands are the reason why the 90's went to hell for metal. The fact that bands like poisen, winger, warrant, bullet boys, motley crew.......on and on, were classified as metal, soiled the genre. Also, I am so sick of bands like Pearl jam, GnR and Nirvana that literally have so little material, and then they are considered gods etc. Compared to so many of the bands that you speak of that have profound legacy, and extremely deep discogrophies to get no respect to these one hit wonders is a crime. I think of Opeth for example. The amount of great/complex music they have produced is amazing, and those other bands could not even attempt to achieve anything like that. Thanks for what you do.

If they did Use your illusion as a single album, it would have been one of the greatest albums of all time imo. Too bad they only made music together for about 5 years
There was a period when they were the best band on the planet. I saw them in 1991 in Cleveland. They could have ducks the night before and the night after but on that night they were the best.
Sorry guys but my dude is Bruce Springsteen, most overrated musician ever.

God, they might be worse than Poison.
Colin Sherritt Poison is good. Matthews is horrible.
Agreed, if you don’t like REM you basically have no taste in music. Thems the breaks.

I agree , although some of his late nineties early 2000’s albums are decent
His teaming up with Lanois was some of the best music he's ever made, a fucking brilliant producer.
This made me laugh and I can't disagree on any of them.
Same here, I don't like a single artist mentioned by Pete. Motley Crue at #1 have a few cool songs but at least someone like Blackie Lawless could be called a real musician which is why he's in W.A.S.P. and not Motley Crue, I guess.

And jane's Addiction..those first two albums, amazing.

That was the first decade where I completely tuned out the contemporary and the mainstream and listened solely to prog, fusion, and older music.

@@colgrey438 To me it's like Nirvana, people credit them with bringing in alternative rock and grunge when bands like Soundgarden and many others had been doing it for years.

What Dylan is for you, is what Neil Young is for me. Awesome song and lyric writer, but his high pitched whiney voice drives me insane.
Yes! Cool songs, but a disgusting voice that is impossible to listen to!
@Marco von Catfish Yes, but Deadman soundtrack is cool.
I agree with your list 100%, Pete. I think we are not too far off in age, and I totally get it. The 90s were a bad decade for music.
I can’t stand Bruce Springsteen. And everything AC/DC did after 1980.
Martyn Dunn I’m from Jersey and I can’t take Springsteen any longer.
blue heeler Totally agree. Back in black was their last good album.
TheBossSks
I think the the same.snd would add Aerosmith, Guns N Roses and the hair acts too.
Long live Ritchie Blackmore with Purple and Rainbow, Dire Straits, Rory Gallagher, Rush, UFO, Budgie, the NWoBHM movement, Sabbath, Priest, Motörhead, Riot, Scorpions and their friends
@@CelestialWoodway they are shit music after their back in black lp
That’s mr Dylan on the phone, mate...
Bob Dylan was not trying to be a great singer. He was a folk/blues singer and in many ways he made rock what it is.
I always thought Izzy Stradlin was a great rhythm guitarist. The first solo disc of his I liked.
If you watch early concert footage, you can tell that Izzy played a huge role in keeping the band tight.
a@@Seth-fg4ho yes, steve was a rock'n''roll drummer. Matt Sorum was more of a bland metal drummer
There was a really good song on the disc. I haven't even thought of that album in 25 years.
Surprised you didnt list The Smashing Ppumpkins lol. The frontman's voice is like the DEFINTION of whining
I hate Poison with a passion.
I too, despise them.
@rj zander Haha, thought Dead or Alive were DOA.
That's awasome.
C Patton poison was amazing
@@entertainmenttalkcentral8541 Unskinny bop
C Patton just blows me away
Agree wholeheartedly especially Bob Dylan. I can't stand him and I've never seen what the hype is about him especially his voice. Terrible voice.
He's got a weird voice, but I'd rather listen to him than guys like Freddie Mercury or Geoff Tate.
@@jans2887 At least Freddie Mercury could really sing !!!
L.T. W- clearly there’s more to music than the pitch and timbre of the lead vocals. Dude won the Nobel prize for his lyrics not his voice lol.
Just imagine Pavarotti singing “Like a Rolling Stone.” Or Josh Groban singing “Buckets of Rain.”
No thanks I’ll stick with Dylan’s version.
Dylan is more of a poet than a singer. He has written amazing songs.
Dylan's voice fit the music he did. He wrote some great songs and they wouldn't have been the same without his voice
Agreed, don't f*** with Bob, he is beyond all reproach, for me he is master of the known universe.
@@patfraser3869 I was already getting riled up from hearing him diss Nirvana and REM, when he said Bob Dylan I slammed the dislike button hard
Wow, my list is pretty identical, but a lot longer.
I feel you on REM's later stuff but their first 3-4 albums are pretty good and were a breath of fresh air when they first came out.
Agree. The IRS years was the best. Great albums.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Achtung tour was great. Primus opened and rocked the house.
Saw them on the Fables tour at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in '85 if I remember right. They were great, Stipe still had long hair. Terrible what they turned into after so much potential.
Where can I find a shirt like yours?
Thank God Faith No More was on that tour ;)
They’re the worse one of them all
@@djentyman4002 YOU'RE the worst.
@@marklrc nope just stating my opinion lol
Metallica were phenomenal every night. Even when James stood over the fucking flame, they played better than GNR.

Hi Pete been missing for quite a while and our tastes are pretty similar… I have to say that this is the funniest episode and I laughed out loud some of the descriptions about what you don’t like about these bands just knocked me off my chair LOL I have to say this is probably the one video where our taste lined up 100% every man you named it for all the reasons you name them was so spot on… Keep on doing what you’re doing thanks!
Brother, you're bang on about Gn'R! So incredibly overrated.
I absolutely hate music awards shows and music competition shows such as American Idol and The Voice.
They are the worst. Taking bland pop music and making it more bland
“Fun if you like slitting your wrists”
I spit my drink out laughing at that line. Priceless
Yeah that was funny.
This whole video was hilarious.
Compared to so many of the bands that you speak of that have profound legacy, and extremely deep discogrophies
to get no respect to these one hit wonders is a crime. I think of Opeth for example. The amount of great/complex music they have produced is amazing, and those other bands could not even attempt to achieve anything like that.
Thanks for what you do.
