This was my favorite game as a kid. I saved up all summer to buy this game when I was young. I had saved up previously all summer mowing my grandfathers lawn to buy Dragon Warrior II and had loved the first one. I sent in the trick to Nintendo Power in classified Information section about the Soldiers armor trick in the very beginning when you sell it off for extra money. It came out in the issue with Mickey Mouse on the cover and I was beside myself as a kid when I seen it printed. Favorite NES game and this is a great video. It's awesome seeing how much love you gave the first three games in the series. Love the videos.
What do you do to stop your mp from not leveling up right? When I hit level 23 in my characters, at level ups, suddenly 2 levels in a row my wizards are NOT getting mp each level up. And I hoped to ask how to avoid this, or if there's some trick to make it so your mp doesn't stop going up? I'd like feedback on this because if I keep leveling up blindly if I don't get it fixed it would suck and mess up future stats. Is there an MP cap at some point to not go over some number?
I remember my grandmother playing this game when I was a kid, and I saw my name on the screen. When I asked her why the wizard had my name, she told me she made him that way. I was blown away. I was in a video game, casting spells and fighting monsters, not as a renamed character but as someone uniquely made. Ever since then, RPGs were my favorite games.

My mother and grandfather played the NES as much as I did as a kid. I remember just watching them play Final Fantasy for hours, which blew my mind at the time.
4th one is way better once you know how to exploit torneko’s hustle. (Buy all steel broadswords or convert all his lost money to casino tokens, and of course sell his statue as it idles if you don’t). More characters and easier to get expensive stuff, and metal king slime is intuitively by the final dungeon. Do recommend buying heavy armor last, and for dq3 starting with a thief, merchant and cleric to class change into a sage, martial artist (merchant’s dig for more money with high luck, I got 10k once by low chance) and soldier/fighter (who can afford stuff now, mage to this once you learn oomph helps too). Gadabout is a luck exploit too (martial artist claws taper off but you can go for speed/criticals), though they’re too weak and slow to really bother being a sage (who has the slowest level ups and combine the mage and cleric spells, which is kinda redundant if you use one or the other, let alone dq3 and dq4 force that sage’s stone to multiheal all day vs oppressive final boss, which 4 has 7 forms and forces insulatle to reduce those breath attacks. Vid seems to be more about general progression though. 1:55 sexy/vamp personality for females only has the best stat growth (similar to final fantasy tactics war of the lions’ tynar rouge lipstick which is the most overpowered accessory in the game) when leveling. It is funny how these old games trick you about replay value when they mean research for optimal builds (late game thief and merchant are too weak and you already got money/good items dropped). I feel snes version of 3 is definitive as switch lacks treasures ‘n trapdoors.
I remember my best friend and I spent the majority of our winter trying to beat this game when it first came out. We had an entire 200 page spiral notebook full of notes, maps and clues by the time we were done. Some SERIOUS work to beat this game as a couple 12-13 year old kids. It’s still one of my favorite achievements in gaming. Thanks for these videos! I’m flooded with memories from way back when.

You just earned a sub, I realized that I've watched several of your (these) videos over the last few days, I've been off of work due to mental health reasons, which is less important than the fact that these, in some small part, have been helping me get through the days. It's refreshing to see games I've played explained in ways that, maybe I already understood, or explaining the parts I didn't. To laugh some aspects of the challenges that would be faced, such as in FF1, because I know them well, and just see feats accomplished in ways I didn't. So for what it's worth, I'm glad RUclips decided too put your videos into my feed. Thank you! =)
So glad to see this one! It was my favorite video game growing up. Could never find it to buy so I rented it weekend after weekend. I was so disheartened to find that someone rented the game and removed my save file after renting it nearly every weekend throughout the summer.

This was the first game I completed on RUclips and it’s easily my favorite NES RPG. The customizable party makes for great replay value (and that’s the reason FF1 is so good). I was just about to post a Glitch video for this game tomorrow as a matter of fact!
Not really, more about timing unless you feel late game thief, merchant and gadabout sage are playable. On the other end, early game gadabout and soldier (too expensive) are really bad, and cleric is pretty much a must unless you can are good enough to do challenges.

Recently completed the Switch remake of this game, so nice timing there. It looks like a lot of stuff in the remakes really got polished, but wow the original game still looks super solid.
I was one of those who bought the game in the early 90s. Dragon Warrior 1 introduced me to rpgs. Oddly, I never have beaten this game, but it is fun to play. I do like using a pilgrim and goof-off at the beginning so I can have 2 sages late game. I've never considered the merchant before, so it's neat to see how they could be used outside of when it's required to have one.
Just spent the last 3 days watching this. So happy you made this video. Never finished the game as a kid, but I did everything you've done in this video without having any assistance. Just the original map. The game was my dad's, and I spent many many hours of my childhood trying to figure this game out
Its funny because the NES version did come with an 84 page guide and a physical map of the world and other goodies like dungeon maps and weapon and item guides prepackaged with the game
I have never played this but always enjoyed struggling to understand DQ1 back when I was a whee lad. I can’t wait to watch this video. Thank you UCBVG for all the hard work and excellent guidance in your videos. Perfect mix of entertainment and information
I only recently discovered this channel and it has become my favorite gaming channel. A short intro and no sponsorships. Just knowledgeable commentary on my favorite games. Please keep it up.
I could watch these videos over and over again. Your voice is a source of great comfort and your subject matter is calming yet engrossing. I cannot express to you how much I appreciate having your videos available to listen to in the background.
I didn't like Dragon Warrior IV as much as III back in the day, but after running through it a few more times over the years it has become my favorite. That being said, III is still a masterpiece!
I've been waiting for this. I honestly thought you wouldn't due to the scale 3 jumps to from 2. But here it is. Thanks for making my slow day at work go by. I recently beat dq3 and dq4 so I'm really excited for this video. Thank you again for your hard work and quality videos!
I spent many happy hours over several years as a kid playing this game, figuring out where to go and what to do, and eventually just grinding levels, not wanting to fight the last boss and stop playing. I think I finally went back and beat it about ten years after I started. All those four-letter-named heroes were like old friends by then. There'll never be another game like that (that I started as a kid and beat as an adult, I mean, not that I play for a long time).
This is the youtube content i desperately needed in my life: retro RPGs lets play with calm, factual and funny-witty narration. I missed this kind of stuff, it was much more common in the late 00s, early 2010s, before everything turned into clickbait.
Thank you for your hard work. These videos 'spark joy' and will remain in my inventory. The 'blink and you miss it' comments are as great as the actual video recordings of gameplay.
So glad you decided to play this. Definitely worth the wait. This is the game that got me into Dragon Quest seriously as a kid, so it's great to see it covered here in such detail.
Omg yes!!! So Glad you did this!!! Most underrated game on the nes ever!! Still play those from time to time to this day!! Had to wait forever to get this in the mail when I was a kid..Nicely done!! Looks like I'm gonna bust it out again!! THANKS!!
I appreciate this channel so much. Since episode one, UCBVG has put out episode after episode of top tier content. The retro gaming community is lucky to have this channel! Thank you for preserving these masterpieces, especially this episode! DQ3 is one of the greatest RPGs of its generation.
Fun Fact: When you visit the castle of Isis at night, the leftmost cat near the entryway will actually tell you that it is the archfiend's familiar. One of the sleeping guards will also make a comment about a monster cat in the palace. I don't think you can fight it though. It's just a fun easter egg.
I really love this game! I played it on a emulator if I remember correctly on my phone about 7 years ago. I love all dragon warrior games and I'll enjoy watching you play this game, thanks for taking the time out to do these walkthroughs!
It's funny... I received Dragon Warrior 3 & 4 at the same time for Christmas one year. I started playing both basically, but 4 really, really hooked me. And 3 started to feel a lot more grindy at the time. After beating 4, it took me a while to get through 3. I'm thinking having these both in my possession at once may have skewed my perception a little. I love them all, and still have 1-4 in boxes w/manuals and maps (along with Crystalis). I just never wanted to let them go, and I haven't. 4 is still my all-time favorite, I've played through it about a dozen times through the years. Looking forward to the inevitable video for 4 now as well.
I love these games so much. It is so pleasant to watch you play and listen to your voice. Also the cards and background-info is very helpful. Thank you very much. Looking forward the next part.
Excellent game, well worth the extra time you used making the vid. This also gives me hope to eventually see the UCBVG take on Phantasy Star 4, and Chrono Trigger.
I’m excited to be “Like 334”. I’ve never played this as we typically stayed away from Dragon Warrior as game renters in the 80’s. Too much time and not enough money to complete. As a result, kids in my neighborhood missed out on these classics, but all of us now love to play these games.
I'm playing this right now-- more or less. It's a mash-up of the four 8-bit NES games. Imagine DW4's Rosa being the kidnapped elfin princess and her mother crying the Dream Ruby... and Orochi working for Hargon. I had actually forgotten the storylines in the original. Thanks for reviewing this one today!
Dragon quest 4 is kinda a mashup of the first 3 games. Choose hero’s gender, play a boring sole Ragnar McRyan chapter 1 and have 3 playable characters with Alena chapter 2, which Alena and Ragnar don’t have magic. Torneko is far superior than the dq3 merchant (flip armors and use your wife’s store for profits then store as casino tokens or steel broadswords to sell for less as you can make infinite money, which helps the bs equipment prices in the series), which is just throwaway for a town or get money with digging by high luck. Congrats on finding a nice mashup fan game or hack though.
@@Brayniac I built it from the ground up based on the idea of making the archfiends more involved rather than sitting in their castles and waiting to be defeated. Thus, all those mini-quests that exist just to take you from point A to point B-- which practically defines DW3-- are used to move the archfiends' story along too. Eventually Baramos, Hargon, and the Dragonlord all start one-upping each other. I also combined the chapter system of DW4 with a hiring system similar to DW3. All the classic assets are used, so I made a hobby out of it. Aside from streaming a play-through myself-- bleh-- I haven't really thought about what kind of avenues exist for a homage like this.
This was the first game of the series I ever played, and it still holds a near and dear place! I'm so glad you covered this it was worth the wait! Thank you for the wonderful work. And also...Super Metroid when 😏
I have a hard time deciding if DQ 3 or 4 is my favorite. While 4 had some of the most memorable music and heroes, DQ3 allowed you to do something really unique and follow your father's footsteps as a 'lone hero'. Thanks for this video, UCBVG! No dog games better than Kylo!
Man, and to think that this is part 1 I just love these guides, even though I'm most likely not gonna play this game for a long while, I still live seeing my man explaining everything Godspeed, my fella!
@Ozymandias was right 4 was nearly impossible to find when it was released. We had one video store that had one copy. The first person who checked it out "moved to a different town" and never brought it back. The next time I saw a copy was 20 years later in a used game store for $150 and that was a reasonable price compared to what it was going for online. Dragon Warrior 4 was closer to the end of the NES life cycle but still. When it was out you couldn't find a copy in most stores.
With party names Mance and Rey I expected the third character to be named Der. As a reference to Game of Thrones but then I remembered we need UCBV because Kylo was a given. I'll have to give the Switch version a try at some point since this was one of my favorites in the series. Also props to Ortega for coming up with a truly original way to abandon his kid, instead of saying he's going to get some milk or cigarettes the dude bodies a dragon into a volcano.
This was the first of your videos I watched, and now I've gone back and watched a ton of the back catalog. Just loving the chill vibes, nostalgia, and jokes. DW3 is such an amazing game, and it's crazy to think that such a long and complex game came out on the NES. I never would've thought to bring a merchant along, but it made sense when you explained. Pretty clever. Any chance you'll do DW4?
Saved to watch later. Can't wait until you play Uncharted Waters for NES, one of my favorite games. Side note, I was one of those kids who missed school the following week this came out haha.
Uncharted Waters would be dope! One of those games I really loved but couldn't quite figure out, Id love to see it fully explained with tips and tricks!
The snes and gbc remakes are some of my favorites ever. I beat it like 5 times back-to-back because it's so fun to play with party compositions, especially since if you have fewer characters, they get more exp, which makes going with 2 or 3 fun and viable.
The Switch version is surprisingly the one to get, though, as it has a LOT more additional content, including locations, bosses, monsters, equipment, and items.
@@OzymandiasWasRightGBC version was my jam, I played it so many times for the intro selection of "dreams", those were so cool!! I loved the one where you got to be a monster and burn the town down
The cat suit you can get by the cat enemies around the desert is extremely useful for all classes and is one of the better armors for a huge part of the game :3
I’ve been watching this on and off for the past few days. I just finished. The overworld music is constantly in my head. 😂 Thank you for a great video. Onto part two.
only recently I had a pleasant surprise by discovering Final Fantasy 1 on the NES, what a great game... been having even more fun now with the Randomizer for it... Dragon Quest series is on my queue, for sure, don't let the simplistic visuals fool you, these are great games
I really hope you will be doing a Dragon Quest/Warrior IV video in the near future. IV was easily the best in the entire series, particularly for the DW titles released for the NES
I played the previous two Dragon Warrior games, but this was the first one that seemed addictive. I was rather disappointed that it was delayed, it was supposed to come out in December 1991, but was actually came out in March 1992, and this made my anticipation for it increase. The first time I played through it I didn’t know many tricks for gaining levels, including the ones in this video, so it did seem like a lot of boring level grinding.
This was one of my favorite DQ games in the series until I played 4. Even though its another trilogy, 4 stuck with me more than 3. However, I loved 3 and how it completed the circle of the legend of Erdrick.
I'm currently playing DQ3 on Switch, i dont own the original but omg im having so much fun! I'm so glad my dad got me into DQ at a young age, I'm obsessed with this series. It's so good.
I bought DW 1,2,3&4 and was on a mission to finally beat the games for the first time in order but all my 560 NES game collection got stolen from me a few years ago and never had a chance or the money to replace them. It's nice to see what I'm getting myself into when I do get to DW 3. Keep up the great work on these videos!!
@@OzymandiasWasRight Yeah, I know. I am really glad I purchased all 4 NES Dragon Warrior games back when they came out. They are too expensive to buy now a days.
@@elishariedlinger559 the games have had remakes over the years on more modern hardwaren and for remakes they are very faithful with some extra additional content, some of which maybe easier to get heck the 6 games are on the app store. since 8 they have changed the title to Quest as that was the name for JP but had to be warrior in the west due to some copyright issue, few character names were changed like mara and nara becoming meena and maya with the late Akira Toriyama's art much more visible in it's presentation

@@mountainmgtow5421 Man, I hope it is. I'm definitely keeping an eye on it!
I appreciate you speeding up a large chunk of the battles. This game has *endless* encounters!
I love going to sleep listening to these, but I always have to go back later and watch for that type of commentary alone
THANKS!!
I have never clicked on one of your videos so fast I think. This was one of those special games from back in the day. A truly huge adventure.
Love your videos! This is my favorite entry in the series although I cant wait for your video on Dragon Warrior IV!
I haven't watched a movie in years, but I have more then enough time to sit down for something like this! :D
Damn, you went all out with an avatar length video. I really like your content.
I never got into this series but this video makes me interested
Where can this be found? It sounds interesting.
And also...Super Metroid when 😏
@Nero I would be okay with Kabuki Quantum Fighter as well. I still own that game and play it from time to time.
Same here except I played the GBC version of it.
One of my favorite NES memories from back in the day. Great choice.
absolutely the best video game for NES, thanks for this
I have a hard time deciding if DQ 3 or 4 is my favorite. While 4 had some of the most memorable music and heroes, DQ3 allowed you to do something really unique and follow your father's footsteps as a 'lone hero'. Thanks for this video, UCBVG! No dog games better than Kylo!
This game was awesome. Loved the whole plot with Erdrick and game mechanics. Must have beat this game 5 different times it was so good.
Man, and to think that this is part 1
I just love these guides, even though I'm most likely not gonna play this game for a long while, I still live seeing my man explaining everything
Godspeed, my fella!
OMG!! So glad you did DW3. I love this series and can't wait to watch. Please do DW4 next. Thanks.
Was looking forward to this one! DW3 was my ALL TIME favorite game growing up (still is today). Can't wait to dive in and play again with you!
Wow! This is epic! This game is a blast from my childhood. Thanks for playing it!!! Well worth the wait!
Holy smokes so much work on this! Doesn’t go unnoticed dude! Keep it up
They didn't sell a lot of copied in the US but they didn't print a lot either. I had a hell of a time finding this game.
I searched forever trying to get 2, 3, and 4 for my NES but never found one for a reasonable price. Thank God the GBC versions were released.
@@mrwednesdaynight gotta admit, its hard to blame the person who "moved out of town" to get a copy of 4.
I hope you cherish those every day.
A treasured RPG. This is definitely going to be the longest UCBVG project by far.
FF 3 will be longer I think.
I have food poisoning right now and your channel is keeping me alive. Doing God's work my friend
Feel better soon. :)
@Carleton Torpin already on my way thank you!
I didn't know they had this on snes! I played it on GBC originally lol
@@hahano9586 Unfortunately it only came out in Japan, so you'd have to emulate it, but it's well worth it imo.
The GBC is how i played it too. Its surprisingly really well done. Apparently the graphics and colors arnt as good but i dont remember noticing.
@@OzymandiasWasRightGBC version was my jam, I played it so many times for the intro selection of "dreams", those were so cool!! I loved the one where you got to be a monster and burn the town down
I dont mind You Can Beat Videogames during the week I love this channel is so badass! If its not Saturday morning, its Tuesday! Thanks again!
This channel is so good. DQ3 is one of my favorite games of all time, and it's really great how much info and trivia you cram into these.
My wife bought me a U Can Beat Video Games Shirt for Christmas, love it.
Awesome channel. Loved your dq walkthroughs. Your Phantasy Star walkthrough was my favourite.
Really hope you cover PS 2,3,4 one day.
The cat suit you can get by the cat enemies around the desert is extremely useful for all classes and is one of the better armors for a huge part of the game :3
Comment for the RUclips algorithm.
Great to see the legend return.
Loved the colour pallets used in this game.
I am so impressed with everything that went into this video, so much work.
Awesome! Dragon Quest is incredible! Looking forward to this mammoth video! thanks!
Loooove these rpg walkthroughs, Your hard work is really appreciated
Love this game. Remember renting it and beating it over a weekend. Then I went and bought it!
"Do not make a sausage party."
Solid life advice, right there.
I’ve been watching this on and off for the past few days. I just finished. The overworld music is constantly in my head. 😂 Thank you for a great video. Onto part two.
Well that was a blast and we're only half way through!!! Can't wait to finish this awesome play through ✌️
only recently I had a pleasant surprise by discovering Final Fantasy 1 on the NES, what a great game... been having even more fun now with the Randomizer for it... Dragon Quest series is on my queue, for sure, don't let the simplistic visuals fool you, these are great games
the amount of effort put into those videos are amazing
I really hope you will be doing a Dragon Quest/Warrior IV video in the near future. IV was easily the best in the entire series, particularly for the DW titles released for the NES
I say that VIII and XI are the best of the whole series, though VII is criminally underrated.
A U Can Beat Video Games is an excellent way to start the day!
What a legend, this guy.
Awesome job my dude. Can't wait to see if we get a chrono trigger vid and a FF6 (FF3 snes) video!
INCREDIBLE game. the Day / Night system was amazing for such an old game, and it's HUGE compared to DQ1 and DQ2
This was one of my favorite DQ games in the series until I played 4. Even though its another trilogy, 4 stuck with me more than 3. However, I loved 3 and how it completed the circle of the legend of Erdrick.
did that change now with being able to play 5 and 6 in the west?
I'm currently playing DQ3 on Switch, i dont own the original but omg im having so much fun! I'm so glad my dad got me into DQ at a young age, I'm obsessed with this series. It's so good.
You can tell a lot of love goes into these videos. Thank you!
00:28 The art was always so great, so sad that Akira Toriyama has passed on and couldn't finish the projects he was still working on.
That is truly heartbreaking. Whoever stole a collection like that is a monster.
Yes!! I was hoping you would cover this game! Thank you UCBVG!!
I have owned this game since it came out. It is one of my favorite games on the NES. It is great to see you cover it here.
I am so jealous you have this for NES. I searched so hard but every copy i found was $$$$. Cherish it.
@@nightwish1453 True. But I still own the originals and still like playing them. So far I think I prefer the originals to any remakes.
@@elishariedlinger559 yeah that's fine but i will say unlike the hits and misses on modern remakes stuff the dq ones are actually pretty good, some of the games are basically the only version available in the west is the remakes such as 5 and 5 and if your European 1-4 and 7
Wait, so not only do we NOT get a car, we're forced to travel the world ON FOOT to stomp a mudhole in a guy very few people even know?? And no one's manning up to give us a ride?? Man, this birthday SUCKS.
This video, however, is excellent. I don't know why, but my mind instantly gravitated to THIS game when you said the biggest episode yet, and I'm glad I was right. This was... well, quite the experience for me. I think this is the first NES game I ever actively threw across a room because i got so angry (I evolved into ACTUALLY caring for my games since then, granted).
Also, while DW4 will always be my favorite NES game (AND favorite game in the entire series), this is a very close second. The size of this adventure was RIDICULOUS for its day.
OMG I have been waiting for this, my favorite game of all time! Thank you so much!
I remember buying this game from Blockbuster Video back in the day when they were paring down their classic NES stock to bring in more SNES stuff....one of the luckiest finds I ever had. Such a great game.
Only got to play the beginning as a kid. Did not finish it till switch came out. So, for nostalgia, I'm hoping you do DW IV. It was my favorite and last Nes game as a kid.
