Dragon Quest III might just be one of the most influential video games of all time, yet it's under-discussed because it never completely took off in the West. You'll constantly see how the likes to Super Mario Bros., DOOM, Final Fantasy VII, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Grand Theft Auto III completely changed the landscape of gaming, but essays and think pieces on Dragon Quest III are few and far between (though thankfully growing in number). Dragon Quest really did come at an awkward time in North America, whereas the planets basically aligned to ensure it became a success in Japan. You can literally trace the roots of beloved RPGs like Pokemon, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, and the aforementioned Final Fantasy to the likes of Dragon Quest, and Dragon Quest III specifically. That's why I'm super excited for the HD2D remake of this game that's currently in development, I really hope that makes a big splash when it comes out!

I love how the DQ series still feels like DQ with the new releases unlike the FF series which hardly feels like FF anymore. I'll never get sick of the concept of a true turn based JRPG that rewards you for taking some extra time to grind just to get that next sword or new ability.

I couldn't agree more. The FF7 Remakes are awful. No strategy. Button mash fest. Awful voice acting, and most egregiously, the removal of any turn based battle elements. I REALLY miss the turn based FF games. Thankfully the Indy AA scene is filling in the blanks with games like "Chained Echoes" and the like.

This is one of my most favorite games of all time. I love most of the remakes (and am eagerly awaiting the upcoming HD-2D one), but I absolutely adore the original NES version. I first played it about 5 years ago, and was blown away by just how much it was able to achieve, both graphically and gameplay wise, for an NES game. I'm 37! I grew up in the NES era! How did I not know about this amazing game (and the other NES DQ games) as a kid?!

I love DQ3 so, so SO much. It's probably my favorite RPG on the NES, I still have my original copy which I was able to convince my local rental guy to sell me for $30 in 1994. The game was just so vast - so many cool things to do and see, so many interesting class and party combinations, so many monsters, so much magic. This game rocks.

I loved how they handled the inclusion of Alefgard in this game. You don't get to go there until well into the game, so you just assume that it isn't part of the setting (especially since you haven't been told that you are the legendary Erdrick/Loto yet) and then you finally find out that not only is it included, but it feels like it's there in all its glory instead of just the scaled-down tribute found in the previous game.

Oh, definitely--I played the Dragon Warrior version when it came out in America (or close to it, anyway) and I ADORE this game. It's SO good. It 's huge, colorful, fun, varied, dark, funny, has proper D&D style character class choosing, allows you to name EVERY character _and_ pick their gender, and that ending is just the chef's kiss on top of everything else. And, because of the way you can choose your gender and the fact that "Erdrick"/"Loto" turns out to be a TITLE not a name, that means that the great hero everybody was going on about...might've been a girl this whole time! :D You have no IDEA how revolutionary that was in games of the time!
Would I recommend everybody try out the original NES version? Well TECHNICALLY yes, but that's because I'm hella old so it only looks a _little_ weird to me. You can play a remake if you want, as long as the gameplay and mechanics are still the same. Just. PLAY IT! Somehow. At some point in your life. If you even slightly like JRPGs, you need to get this one under your belt in some way.

@@JiisTube yes. Spoiler alert the MC earns the title of Erdrick. I realize it’s not the hero’s real name but it’s a given name. I’ve played this game as a child and could never pass it but this game made me think and appreciate nostalgic rpg archetypes. It was then that I grew up a little bit and tried to play it again. Still couldn’t pass it… 6 years later a month before my son was born, I finally passed DQ3. And I felt my inner kid self smile and it felt like I finally finished something I started decades ago…
It was then I knew, my son will be Erdrick! My hero, my son. He who brought me the precious light I was missing in my life. I went through a rough period and once my son was born, I learned a new love like never before. I thought loving your wife or girlfriend would be the best and unique! But a child, man… it’s perfect.

The only thing I hated is that you always start in a NEW job class at job lv 1 even if you were in the same class previously and LVED it up all the way to job class lv 99.
So once you have 3x lv 99 Sages you may as well KEEP them in that job class.

    • @williamspellman856

Wha? There's no challenge past level 40-50 for any class. Maybe in a solo game, but as a full party you wouldn't have need of such high stats. Not to mention as said in the video you lose only half of your stats when you change jobs, meaning that each job transfer you are gaining something rather than losing everything.

So the original Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior here in the US as you know) is quite literally the game that formed my entire gaming ethos when i was a young young little wee little man. Unfortunately as you know the dragon quest games weren't US releases for the most part. Thankfully Final Fantasy filled that void amongst many others.
However because of that, i didnt rediscover the greatness of DQ until DQ11. After that i went back and played most of DQ8 on an emu (still working on it).
I DESPERATELY want to play DQ3, however, i want to "save myself" for the HD-2D. I'm not a huge "you have to experience it the way it was" sort of person, so that draw isnt there for me to go emulate DQ3 and i'd rather just play a "modernized" version with good menus and runs well without emulation, etc etc.
It just feels like its going to be years before we see this.
Now, i'm going to go back to praying for an HD-2D remake of FF6

The NES version so reminded me of the old Ultima games, one of the series next to Wizardry that started the Japanese RPG craze. Sadly many JRPGs (and modern RPGs in general, incl. games like Witcher 3) are far to simple, were following quest markers is good enough or being so linear that they don't even need any. Quite different from old RPGs, especially CRPGs.
I actually played through quite a few JRPGs in Japanese without having to be able to understand anything written as they were so simple. Once you know the drill, as most JRPGs are very similar in how they are played, you knew that you just had to talk to the right NPC (maybe a couple of times) to trigger the flag to progress.

That is a good point... the way DQIII starts there is no sense that this will be the story of Erdrick (or Loto), its the story of a kid trying to find their lost father. It may not be much, but that's a pretty powerful pull on the player and the way it plays out must have been very surprising for the time. (In fact, one could argue that Fallout 3 takes this same plot thread as its base).

The “ job system " on offer here is not much more sophisticated than 1985's Bards Tales system of magic caster advancement, and all the talking and questing are overshadowed by 1987's Ultima 4.
Console only gamers miss soon much of game history.
