When I was around 10 my buddy finally beat Aganim in Link to the Past and our enthusiastic high fives resulted in me taking a hard slap that sent me flying. Great moment. An aside, what 4th grader is 6 foot tall? We need to ban high capacity assault children!

The series is the number one reason that RPGs, and especially JRPGs, are the genre of video games I've invested by far the most time into over my 42 years of life. I had all 4 of the "Dragon Warrior" games on the NES as a kid, and although 4 was probably my favorite, I definitely played the second game a lot as a kid. I never imported 5, 6 or 7, but I remember picking up 8 on the PS2 when I was in my 20s and the clear parallels to 4 (Draconian race/gear instead of Zenithian, among other smaller bits) and the gameplay elements lifted from 3 (6 sacred orbs to gather over the first half of the game) reminded me so much of my childhood, it was an excellent dose of nostalgia. In more recent years, I've played XI multiple times since it's basically a love letter to the entire series.

When I was a kid playing this. Really hard adventure and all sure, I was super duper into it. Going around on the boat and all that..... eventually I landed on the Original Map and the song started playing. I just stopped, my child eyes open wide. "I, Know this place." and just stood there listening to the old song again, remembering the adventure I had all that time ago in the first game. I started to explore the land, remembered all the 'secrets' of monster spawns etc. not all the same of course... but seeing how much has changed..... villages destroyed and lost.... villages that grew, etc. It was such a heart warming moment in video games for me. If I ever get money to have a game made and stuff, I would make sure to recreate that in a sequel.

    THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!
DQ2 often gets overlooked in the series due to its early-installment weirdness and the and allegedly-weak plot, so it's great to see this game getting some love, recognition, and the record being set straight on it.

Love this series. I got great memories back in 1990 when I was exploring all parts of it's world trying to find any secrets in what I would say was an open world of it's time. The exploring and killing monsters help make it feel less of a grind. So many neat ideas for exploring like the echo flute when trying to get the crests. Great memories!

8:30 What people don't know is that Castle Moonbrooke is actually the fourth castle the king had built in that swamp. The first one sank into the swamp, as did the second. The third one burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. The fact that the fourth one stayed up is a testament to the strength of Castle Moonbrooke, in that even after being sacked by monsters, it remains standing.
EDIT: 10:17 Looks like you already beat me to the joke. I knew I should've waited to see if you'd referenced it, but I just couldn't resist. Oh, well. I'll leave it here as food for the algorithm.

Loved both the DW/FF series back in the day. Gotta remember too, that most NES players were kids, and the games retailed at $60 (around $130 in today's dollar), and parents weren't opt to buy a new game every few months (for me it was Christmas and birthdays...until I got a paper route and bought my own 😉) so with FF coming out first, DW2 took a backshelf.

It's really cool that the monsters have both spells and skills in this game. It really laid the groundwork for Dragon Warrior monsters, where there are breath attacks, spells, dances, and miscellaneous skills.
1:40:28 That skill became OddDance, and it has an improved version that absorbs the target's MP.

When we got there, the price was $50 or whatever launch was. My mom was furious, got the manager, and told me and my friend to go look at the games while she went full Karen way before that was an overused term. I don't know what she said, but we walked out of their with DWII for $20!

I absolutely love the Dragon Warrior games, and have since I got my copy of the original Dragon Warrior free with a subscription to Nintendo Power magazine! I always struggled with this one out of the first four (never got to play any of the others until they were ported to Android - didn't own any of the systems except NES and Wii). I used the Game Genie sometimes for my playthroughs, but it's cool to see some of the little tricks that were in the game.
Currently, I'm working my way through DQ XI S (slowly, as I don't get to play too often - two kids and two pets), and I'm also trudging through creating a Dragon Warrior RPG based on D&D 5e. Going back through old games can give me some ideas when I get stuck. Excellent guide!

I was so pleased with myself at finishing the first Dragon Warrior game I couldn't wait for the second. I had to admit I was met with some disappointments, such as the main character not using magic, and weapons and armor being in the item inventory which ate up space, but I struggled through this game. Since I did not have a strategy guide like I did with the first there were many things I had to figure out on my own, and just wandering around try find what to go next accomplished some level grinding. I still have my copy with the first quest still saved on it from the very first time I brought it home and turned it on.

Or even trying it myself in-store at the testing units. But I'd never see any of the DQ series anywhere other than the shelf for sale at the same price as games like Zelda or MegaMan and Mario (That's AU$70 to AU$80 just for referance). Heh, well, at least now I can enjoy watching these playthrus and know that there's nothing skipped/missed. Cheers for bringing these classics to us like this, as usual my man.

Man, I hope one day I'll finally get to play all the Dragon Quest games, I've only beaten 11, but I know that these games are all amazing
Thanks for always making our weekends incredible, my man! 🐕
I love how the games must be released on weekends, because when they were released on Tuesdays, nobody went to school or work, so they demanded the games be released on Saturdays

I grew up playing Dragon Warrior 1, and dreaming of 2, but I never had the money to buy it. I thought I was missing the most advanced game ever.

Dragon Warrior 4 is my favorite in the series. Rented that from this hole in the wall place. Man was that fun. The maps and books and all that.

Thank you for finally explaining this magic system; for many years, I just didn't bother with attack magic, because it kept missing when I needed it most. Also, I don't know if you did this on purpose, but right after you said, "Before I was so rudely interrupted," there was an ad break for me.

You're truly a masochist for playing this game. I decided once upon a time I was going to run through all of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games. This game broke me. It goes from mediocre easy to constant instant deaths. It got to the point where it wasn't even fun anymore.

I'm currently playing it for the first time on Switch. Love the updated Graphics. I grew up with Dragon Warrior 1 on NES and absolutely love the Dragon Quest series as a whole but I've never played II at all. I'll need to come back to this when I get lost for sure!

I love that you tackle longer games but it’s a double edge sword because I like the detail you put into your videos but it’s bitter sweet to wait until next week for the finish
Edit: pt 2 is late. I hope every thing and every one is ok on your end.

i beat all the dragon warrior games when they released on the nes... those were the days. Soul games would be nothing without Ultima, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. I could go on about all the hard-core rpg games on the nes that gave no mercy to those who owned them... but I think I will leave that to this channel and his amazing, detailed journeys into many of our childhood memories. 😅 I love rpg games since age 6! 34 years of video gaming!!!
