More dragon quest goodness let's goooo. I look forward to the Dragon Quest 3 video one day. It's one of favorites of the entire franchise up there with 5, 8 and Monsters 2.
I just finished the NES original about a week ago after playing it off and on for about a year. I used a guide without feeling bad about it at all. Overall I enjoyed it, but I never need to do it again.
I played it when it first came out way back when. Unlike this version, you really _did_ have to grind for levels at the end if you wanted to beat it. Jirard pussied out. ;)
Personally, my favorite game in the Erdrick trilogy. The world feels a lot more surreal to me than DQ1 and DQ3's and it has such a colorful cast of characters.

Is that a glitch though? I think that makes for an interesting feature so you just aren’t spamming the attack button and have to think through your moves.
As someone that only played DQ2 on the SFC, I found the balance to be nearly perfect in that version. The only exceptions would be the last 3 bosses, which were pure stat gates that took a few hours of grinding to beat since I hadn't done any prior. I was only around level 28, iirc. No amount of RNG or strategy would get me through any of these walls, so I spent 30 minutes grinding to beat that last miniboss, an hour for Hargon, then 3 or 4 hours for Malroth, which still required some lucky RNG at around level 38-40. Overall, though, the SFC version gave a great natural sense of progression and provided a great increasing challenge from start to finish thanks to me never grinding. If I ever went somewhere I shouldn't have been yet, I would get wiped or close to it, and I really had to work with the areas statistically available to me to follow the hints. My favorite DQ tied with 5 (I need to get back to 11, however). It's a fun 15-20 hour adventure with a needlessly massive spike at the end, at least in older versions.
@@Tha_Kev I doubt Jirard will ever do another musou game, after Hyrule Warriors. Way too many hundreds of hours just mindlessly grinding, long past the time you finished all meaningful content. DQ11 is at least reasonable and mostly meaningful content, even if it still takes 1-200 hrs to complete.
Dragon Quest II is massively underrated. The original NES was hard ofc, but it's great for explorers! You do have to grind quite a bit toward the end though. I would highly recommend the GBC remake for everyone because of the QOL changes.

I think what Golden Sun did by making heroes default to the Defend action if the thing they were trying to do (attacking a monster but someone else kills it first, trying to heal a specific party member but a monster kills them first, etc.) is the best option mixing the incentive to actually strategize with the convenience of benefiting the player (rather than "Oops, you just wasted your thousand gold healing potion on someone who died before you could reach him")

I've always loved the mechanic of missing a dead monster. It makes you have to do a little more strategy and consider who attacks where and when, it makes battles a bit more interesting than just pressing 'a'
I'm playing through that right now. I like the old Paper Mario feel it has, kind of annoyed by doing the same amount of damage pretty much the whole game so far. Odd but fun!
I played the first two Dragon Quests as a kid on the GameBoy Color. I definitely loved both games and it has made me happy to see Jirard complete the second.
Played the first two on Gameboy as a kid and I never beat either of them. The second one especially drew me into it's world because of how little it holds your hand. You are genuinely expected to explore in order to find your way and I LOVED that when I was young.
I feel you're not being 100% clear on the dead monster targeting thing. The game actually does take that in consideration by grouping similar enemies together. For example, say you have five slimes and one rat. Because the slimes are grouped together, when one is defeated, the next party member auto targets the next in the group. Only if the last slime in the group is killed and the rat remains, do you have that situation where a party member wastes a turn.
There is a dog in Dragon Quest Builder's 2 that turns into a Princess if you hold up Ra's Mirror, but it isn't a part of the story and you could complete the whole game without knowing this was possible. I named the dog Thor so then I had Thor the Princess for the rest of the game
I owned this on NES. I was a big RPG geek pretty young. When kids were getting Mario 3, I was getting Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. I remember loving this game so much, that I have never gone back to replay it, because I don't want to tarnish those amazing memories.
I just started playing Dragon Quest XI and I’m blown away. I’ll be for sure going back and playing the originals. That being said, I can’t wait for a Dragon Quest IX Completionist episode.
im just gonna say it, have been here not too long since abut game 250 or something. The intro is giving me goosebumps every god damned time! Love this series!
I love dragon quest 1 thru 4. For both Nintendo and super Nintendo! Number 2 was great! Collecting characters was super fun. And the fact you didn't have to open the menu to open the door was nice!
Fun Fact: When I beat Dragon Quest 2 for the 1st time,(had to do a 2nd take to beat the Final Boss though) my team was around 20-25 in Level each, I think. No grinding necessary.
Although not the best RPG, I did enjoy it. It reminded me of the RPGs I played as a kid. I didn't get to play this game at the time, but was able to on the Switch
I beat this on mobile last year and genuinely could never have done it without a wiki. I genuinely enjoyed it a lot especially Vs the experience of beating the first game but fuck me it is an obtuse struggle sometimes haha
It's amusing to me to see what the younger posters think of these games. Decades ago, we loved them. They were cutting edge at the time and captured my imagination like few things in my subsequent life.
I wasn't born to see the original release of these games (95 kid here) but eventually I did play them, somehow going completely blind. The way the adventure in DQ3 keeps on getting bigger and bigger is something I haven't seen replicated by many other games (sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well, english is not my first language). It takes you places you wouldn't imagine and the progression is so well paced that it will not be until almost the end that you will look back at the epic adventure you've had during the past 30 hours. And that ending! It completely recontextualized the adventures from 1 and 2. It gives you this level of accomplishment like no other game, it makes you feel like an absolute badass and is the definition of pay-off in gaming. Whenever I think of epic fantasy LOTR will come to mind first, but quite frankly DQ3 is not far behind
I remember having to grind those Giants and Cyclopses in the end of the original back in the 80s and how it just about made me give up on JRPGs forever. Glad they finally did something about it.
As a gamer from the nes era, i really appreciate when games are modified to a modern era in terms of difficulty and resources and all the things. In my 40s, with an active lifestyle and a family, i don't have the time to bash my head against difficulty for the sake of difficulties sake... So i super appreciate anytime developers make old experiences easier. I wish they'd also add a few quality of life things like main quest scenario markers. Anyway, seems like a decent playthrough now.

I started playing Dragon Quest after i saw your first Dragon Quest video, got the entire Erdrick Trilogy on switch and beat all of them a few weeks ago. Tedious but they were fun, thanks for the recommendation!
Its good to see that Jirard brought some new player to the Dragon Quest games. If you want to play a Dragon Quest game with less tediousness then the first three, I'd recommend playing the prequel to the Erdrick trilogy that is DQ 11 S. It has a larger and overall far better written cast of characters and rather than being the descendent of a great hero you are the reincarnation of a great hero and yet you are treated as a criminal on the run for a very large portion of the game which makes it have a more interesting spin because you as the player know that you have to be constantly be on the run in order to reach the point where you can save the world. Overall its probably ranked 4th in my standings. Another DQ game that does really well with some interesting story beats especially for side characters and the other party members is DQ8 which is commonly rated by many as one of the top 5 if not one of the top 3 mainline games. It has a great 3ds remake which allows the player to get two of the best side characters as party members, another optional ending, a super dungeon, and even new sidequests that let you obtain certain items earlier than otherwise (not by much like maybe a town or two ahead but still neat) or even just obtain items for free compared to in the stores. DQ 8 is also one of the funniest games and usually requires very little grinding especially if you do the sidequests, in fact the only times I've ever grinded in the game are for an optional task of beating the monster arena as early as possible and for beating a boss that is best described as the midway point of the game (which is really hard unless you either beat the monster arena specifically rank b early (so built in grinding) or grind to the levels where multiheal becomes available). In all though its definitely one of the better games having a place as my second favorite game in the mainline series. The Zenithian trilogy is also a good option specifically DQ4 and DQ5 as they expanded the party system, and really had you play through the character's pasts more. 4 let you play as a great warrior who just wants to save people, a pair of sisters looking to avenge a crime against them one being a dancer and one a fortune teller, a weapons merchant on the run (this part can be a slog but also let's you get all the money you'd ever need and let's you see an interesting side of things that you normally dont), a martial arts loving princess and her entourage of a priest and mage who go on a journey to a grand tournament only to encounter issue after issue on the way, and of course the hero him/herself as this was also the first DQ to let you choose a gender for the hero as well as being one of the only DQ games to do so. 4 was definitely a piece that the series needed to get where it is today and is undisputed one of the best games in the series. 5 was a game all about living the life of the main character from choosing their name at birth all the way until they got married, had a family, and ended up saving the world on the way. 5 is also commonly rated as one of the absolute best DQ games by almost every list I've ever seen largely due to the depth that it makes the player actually witness and feel throughout the game. While grinding can be a bit of slog its also largely optional as most grinding is done to try and obtain monsters for the party because monsters can join you now assuming you meet some special requirements in game. While I haven't gotten to play these as many times as some others these two are definitely top 3 material with 5 being my number 1 favorite and 4 in third. DQ9 is where customization shines for the series having the ability to fully customize the appearances and capabilities for the characters of the party with a great class system which expands overtime andaround 100 quest, more if you can get the stuff needed to hook up one fo the fan-made Nintendo internet stand in for the dS like Wiimfi. The story is by no means the best in the series but I'd say its definitely at least as good as the original Erdrick trilogy so decent enough. Grinding isn't needed too often unless you switch classes a lot but you really don't have to as you can make plenty of parties that can beat the game out of the first six classes just have one all-rounder of some kind, one dps, a priest, and fill in the last role with either another dps or all-rounder. Overall though its a pretty decent game and was actually one of the first mainline DQ games I ever got to play, and I've actually completed it three times and beaten it two more after that (the last two times I didn't have the Nintendo wifi as it was shut down). This game held my attention for so long despite some of the issues that I'd say its my number 5 for sure. The games to avoid or just watch others play are 6 and 7 as both tend to be more of a slog then the rest, however if you do play them they do have a lot of fun content its just that some of the grinding is terrible and 7 specifically is an extremely long game for dragon quest standards with some people playing for over 100 hours before finishing the game.
I can't remember which one it was. But I played an old Dragon Quest game on a GBC I believe and though I was young and didn't know what the heck to do that game was lit as hellllllll. I think it's why I like JRPG's so much now.
Dragon Quest is by far my second favorite game series behind Zelda, though I'm hit more heavily by nostalgia for this series, something I love about dragon quest never straying from its traditional turn based roots like Final Fantasy did, when I get a Dragon Quest game I knownexactly what I'm getting and love it all the same, stillworking through the first game when I feel like it before going into the second game but ill get there
Im so hyped for the 2d/hd Dragon Quest remake!! I love good ol´jrpgs and this video hyped me even more! Thnx Jirard! Wicked new intro dood, I LOVE IT!!!
I was 5 when I DQ1 back in 1990, as "Dragon Warrior". It began my love of JRPGs, RPGs in general, and classical music. That score in NES chiptune was... I can't describe it. It was a beautiful thing, beautifully orchestrated, and baffling in that it was coming out of the little gray box. Also, since I was 5 when I beat this game last... Balls of light 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Yeah this port really helped to smooth experience, the battle art is amazing the only thing I would fix is the characters pixel art so that they could fit with overworld more
I played through DQ2 on the NES and it was actually really fun, in part because of how rough it is. Playing through the Switch and SNES versions made me think "Wow, they really spoil you in these versions." For example, in the NES version, getting your hand on an mp recovery item was a crapshoot. If you could get it, you basically didn't use it until the end for the final boss fight. In the SNES version, it's like they're just passing them out. Anyways, despite its flaws, I highly recommend the NES version for a first playthrough if you can enjoy the grind.
I haven't played any of the main DQ RPGs but all this music is making me super nostalgic for Dragon Quest Builders 2 (which is based on the 2nd game). Also I miss my buddy Malroth. :'( I need to play that game more sometime.
This feels like only using your starter in Pokemon and being suprised when level 78 Charizard blows through the third gym at level 24 with a little bit of grinding I just finished DQ2 at level 25 and he's walking into the castle at 48?
You may wanna wait for the upcoming DQ3 remake before covering that one, sense it might be the definitive version of the game. If not try the gameboy color version sense it's based of the SNES remake.
kids who've never played an NES game. You old folks always say those games were so hard, harder than most games today. How I come I breezed through Dragon Warrior 1-3. lol seriously though. I was a bit skeptical about picking this up because I wasn't sure I had the patience to play an old brutal NES RPG. I don't mind a challenging game but I tend to steer away from absolutely brutal. Great video though, Subscribed & looking forward to see what other content you've done along with future vidoes. video, dialogue [though slightly loud] and depth were all excellent. I'm definitely leaning toward picking up the retail version now. I have all the time in the world but I just don't know if/when I'd actually get to it. Past few years I hadn't really played many RPGs because I was busy playing all sorts of other games and genres. This year though I'm hammering out almost exclusively RPGs and hoping to keep a steady diet of JRPG/RPGs moving forward; again. So far this year I've already knocked out the entire Cold Steel series, P5 Strikers, Nier Replicant, Ys IX, almost got the platinum trophy in Scarlet Nexus, along with a few other titles and platinum trophies this year alone. Problem is I keep tackling games I end up buying 2 so my backlog isn't shrinking all that fast lol.

Ps. I hope he does devil may cry for its 20th anniversary and tomb raider for its 30th anniversary.
This game is much more interesting as an historical piece than it is to play.
True playing it kind of sucks. Somehow even more than the first one.
@@Joppuman At least I played the Android version. I was curious, and it probably wasn't worth it.
I played the nes version of dragon quest ll and it was better then the first one but it was painful to beat.
@@diegoarmando5489 assuming you've played the first one as well, and if you havent played 3 you will know the rest of the story in the first trilogy. And 3 is supposed one of the best ones. And if you have played 3, you can say you played the whole first trilogy. And thats 😎
@@Joppuman I have :)
I was born in 1984. I grew up beating Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 on the NES before I was 10 years old.
I loved DW2.
I've always loved the mechanic of missing a dead monster. It makes you have to do a little more strategy and consider who attacks where and when, it makes battles a bit more interesting than just pressing 'a'
Still holding out hope for Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling to feature on this show.
I'm playing through that right now. I like the old Paper Mario feel it has, kind of annoyed by doing the same amount of damage pretty much the whole game so far. Odd but fun!
They should make a sequel with how much success it's getting.
I have such fond memories of DW2 as a kid. Then playing DQ Builders 2 almost 30 years later it became one of my favorite DQ games.
I played the first two Dragon Quests as a kid on the GameBoy Color. I definitely loved both games and it has made me happy to see Jirard complete the second.
What's the chances of an episode on Advance Wars, what with Re-Boot Camp coming out?
I remember when this was new as Dragon Warrior 2 here in the US. Will always love this franchise.
Played the first two on Gameboy as a kid and I never beat either of them. The second one especially drew me into it's world because of how little it holds your hand. You are genuinely expected to explore in order to find your way and I LOVED that when I was young.
I was waiting for this for so long! Thank you for the hard work💕
More Dragon Quest! Yes!!
Protip: if your sage casts “Bedragon” and the sage attacks a metal babble, it’s an instakill.
It's my first DQ game and DQ 8 is what got me to love the series over again.
This is a great episode. Love hearing Jirard's enthusiasm.
Also, your time on G4 has been nothing short of excellent. So happy for you.
I have an hour before work and wasn't sure what I wanted to watch on TV, so I decided to watch two episodes of Completionist.
Your videos are literally what inspired me to finally try Dragon Quest. Can't wait to see your video on the upcoming 3 Remake.
im just gonna say it, have been here not too long since abut game 250 or something. The intro is giving me goosebumps every god damned time! Love this series!
This is one of my favorite games of all time. Thanks so much for reviewing this game in depth!
PS, I agree - the Switch port is very good.
Wow I had just recently finished DQ11 S and watched your first Dragon Quest review and this comes out so quickly
Jirard, you're killing it in both SGS and Minecraft HC. Keep up the good work!
By the time he completes 1000 games, at the end of the intro he’s just going to be doing the Akuma thing. “Satsui no hado” or whatever.” Complete 1000 games!” Instead of “die a thousand deaths!” And instead of kanji, his completionist symbol.
I can't get over Bretta. Sorry but that is soooo funny to me.
Still say that I don't really see "going for max level just because you can" to be part of jrpg completion :p
Glad to see the massive improvement over your DQ Heroes 2 review.
I can't remember which one it was. But I played an old Dragon Quest game on a GBC I believe and though I was young and didn't know what the heck to do that game was lit as hellllllll. I think it's why I like JRPG's so much now.
Dragon Quest is by far my second favorite game series behind Zelda, though I'm hit more heavily by nostalgia for this series, something I love about dragon quest never straying from its traditional turn based roots like Final Fantasy did, when I get a Dragon Quest game I knownexactly what I'm getting and love it all the same, stillworking through the first game when I feel like it before going into the second game but ill get there
24:20
Huh, so DQ2 did the Earthbound thing before Earthbound did it.
24:04
Jirard: But Jirard, Faciane, and Bretta prevailed.
Me: *eyes Faciane's coffin*
Ur intro is awesome 😆 I really love dragon quest as well so I’m glad to watch u play 2 before the remake of one of my most favorite games ever!
Nice to see another Dragon Quest title here, and that it was overall a pretty painless experience for Jirard.
I still love the new intro!
When Jirard said "minor layer of anxiety" it stung me too... Poor Jirard.
My only experience was with the GBC version, I grinded until my thumbs were stumps.
Yay! I was always hoping you’d make a series out of the DQ games after the video of Dq1 a year ago.
Im so hyped for the 2d/hd Dragon Quest remake!! I love good ol´jrpgs and this video hyped me even more! Thnx Jirard!
Wicked new intro dood, I LOVE IT!!!
Hearing that Cannock was supposed to die to Malroth made me laugh, because Cannock already tends to die A LOT during the course of a playthrough.
Just finished DQ1 and DQ2 on the Switch last week. They were wonderful palette cleaners.
Now I'm struggling with BD2.
I hope you complete DQ3!
been wanting to play one of the Dragon Quest Games. This convinced me. DQ2 Here we Go!
Question: will you be waiting for the 2D-HD remake before tackling DQ3, or will you just tackle it separately?
Knowing him. He'll wait
Yeah this port really helped to smooth experience, the battle art is amazing the only thing I would fix is the characters pixel art so that they could fit with overworld more
I cant wait for Jirard to change to Wii Remote after episode 500
I like the way it looks! Especially in town.
Hyped for the Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake, and DQXII !!
Jirard, would you please COMPLETE Curse of the Dead Gods sometime? I think it's right up your alley.
Bout time we got another DQ review!
each intro just gets better and better
Literally less than a week after I watched your Dragon Quest 1 video AND as I was playing Dragon Quest XI S.
I haven't played any of the main DQ RPGs but all this music is making me super nostalgic for Dragon Quest Builders 2 (which is based on the 2nd game). Also I miss my buddy Malroth. :'( I need to play that game more sometime.
This feels like only using your starter in Pokemon and being suprised when level 78 Charizard blows through the third gym at level 24 with a little bit of grinding
I just finished DQ2 at level 25 and he's walking into the castle at 48?
You may wanna wait for the upcoming DQ3 remake before covering that one, sense it might be the definitive version of the game. If not try the gameboy color version sense it's based of the SNES remake.
Yeah, but to fill that (likely) two year gap? DS IV, V or VI, 3DS VII or VIII or XI S would be good third episode candidates.
@@Volvagia1927 DQ11 would definitely take him a long time to complete.
Dragon Quest XII has been announced
And 3 HD 2D remake.
Dragon Quest is always a plus to see, wish you'd go back and actually do a Completion of the Heroes games though.
I completid the switch version last month! Realy great game!
Hail from Iceland!
21:09
it hurts me to a spiritual level that you didn't go ham on the metal slimes
Yo that slime animation was super slick!
kids who've never played an NES game. You old folks always say those games were so hard, harder than most games today. How I come I breezed through Dragon Warrior 1-3. lol
seriously though.
Finished it today, couldn’t find the the thunder blade tho , was happy I found all of Edrick equipment
This was a wonderful video Jirard u definitely put a lot of work into it & it shows.
