Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is a platform game, under development by Toys for Bob, and to be published by Activision. The game will be the eighth main installment in the Crash Bandicoot series and a sequel to the trilogy remake Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and will take place after the events of Crash Bandicoot: Warped within an alternate continuity. The game's story sees both Crash Bandicoot and his sister Coco facing against their old nemesis Doctor Neo Cortex as he sets forth on a new scheme to conquer a multiverse of dimensions scattered across time and space.
Taking place directly after the events of Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Doctor Neo Cortex, Doctor Nefarious Tropy and Uka Uka escape from their space-time prison, creating a rip of the fabric of time and exposing a multiverse in the process. In order to restore order to the multiverse, Crash and Coco must find the four Quantum Masks scattered across space and time and stop Cortex. Also caught up in the chaos is Dingodile, whose retirement from villainy is interrupted by the spacial disruptions, and a version of Crash's old girlfriend Tawna from an alternate dimension.

CORRECTION - I made a mistake in that I said Naughty Dog sold the IP. It’s not as simple as that. Naughty Dog never owned the game IP and it was as a results of corporate mergers and acquisitions that led to Activision owning the IP. I made this comment on the fly without research and that was my bad.

@Zachary Erickson Yeah, I'm glad he actually followed our advice to aim primarily for platinum trophy and anything that gives in-game rewards, instead of going for LITERALLY everything. His video on Persona 5 is very telling that this was a wise decision.
He did a similar thing in his Persona 5 video. He put over 500 hours in it because he was attempting to get every romance item in the game, which required him to date one girl in each playthrough, which means he'd had to play the game about 10 times, with each taking between 80 to 100 hours to complete once.

But also when you see his game screen at 22:50 of all the stuff he got it says he got all the purple cross like gems though yeah? So did a friend of his get this? or did he not take this from his screen but from some video online? It says he got everything and it was 106 % which he said he didnt do cause he couldnt deal with those levels... right? Or did I miss hear that?
Honestly, the fact that the Purple Dev relics hold no reward, other than bragging rights, is for the best. Imagine if there were rewards that would make people feel obligated to try and get them all? So having them there as an optional extra challenge to strive for with no strings attached that you can back out of, makes it what it is at face value, if it's not for you, then you don't have to do it to "complete" the game. But in terms of speedrunning, you know it's going to be one hell of a challenge that will likely garner attention for people trying, and even succeeding on getting the purple time relics competitively, which may also spark interest for others to try out this game. It's kinda one of those less is actually more deals, I'm curious at what chaos will spawn from these relic challenges.

I'm not a crash runner but I follow the scene and they've already put some of these times to shame. I really appreciated them including the dev times, especially given some people complaining that some of the platinum times seem impossible, dev's just being like "nahhhh bro, you don't even know". I've heard people say verbatim in past games "I wonder how far the dev's got", I feel like some people would have been disappointed if they WEREN'T in there, and Jirard's kind of missing the point. This isn't "here's a time to strive for". It's "We put in years and this is the best we could do, just a fun fact".

Absolutely loved this game. Thought I'd even put my quarentine to good use and one hundred percent it. After seeing this video....I shall just continue to play the game and just enjoy it. Trying for that 106% seems unbearable

@@hatchell18 crash 1-3 were like that as well though with the time trials lol. I had to repeat the stormy ascent stage for hours just to get the time trial trophy.

I'm sorry but I agree with Caddy on inverted levels: changing a few boxes and apply a color paint isn't actual additional gameplay, it's just extending the game for the sake of it with obnoxious stuff.
I like the pirate ones with the color splash and the snow worlds with the comic book style and also the prehistoric levels.
@@EmmureMARIO64 They would've been nice if THEY WERE OPTIONAL. Since they are mandatory is like if you take Mario 3D World levels and just apply a different color paint BUT they are mandatory for full completion.
They would have been ok if they were just "an additional thingy" that you could turn on or off if you WANTED to and the only collectables would be in the MAIN level ONLY.
Great idea, but poorly executed imo. I agree with you that they would’ve been better if they were just a filter you could turn on or off.
I wish they would of made it not only mirror mode, but be able to adjust the color changes, changed the location of every box, new bonus levels and have no masks in the levels. That woulda been the icing on the cake as inverted levels imo.

@@king_big_pp the only levels I've found to be a pain are Toxic Sewers' coloured gem door and the three riding levels (six if you include N.Verted). Heck I've even gotten most of the perfect relics in the first few worlds without even trying. But yeah, the platinum time trial relics are not fun (mainly in the early levels. Later levels let you have a few more mistakes).
The devs must be sadistic cause trying to beat their times made me cry.
To be fair, it’s probably a lot easier for them since the pretty much know they game inside out.

Microsoft has hinted that Rare IPs could be handed over to other developers. It’s happening to Perfect Dark and it could also happen to Banjo-Kazooie.

I have a love hate relationship with platformers.. Crash Warped was one of my fondest memories from the 90’s but I never did finish it.. Guess I should take them more seriously especially now that my reflexes ain’t what they were.. I’m proud of the little collection I have..

Sometimes i feel like that the rank "Complete it" should be divided into two sub categories which are soft completion and hardcore completion. Or a new completionist rank that is between complete it and finish it. Just saying.
That would be Finish It, while people take that as "Do the story then stop" I take it more as Jirard saying " Yeah this stuff was fun so feel free to do that too, but just avoid even bothering with all this other crap that sucked just for the sake of completion."

I deeply respect that you are the only reviewer to mention how terrible the Platinum and Developer relics are to complete. And most importantly how terrible the triple spin is to actually use and cause me physical pain. I have a similar amount of time to you 130hr and have 35/38 stages 100%.
It's a great game, but an absolute nightmare if you are a completionist.
What's funny is lots of games used to be like that (fun to play, pain to complete) but that was from the times of needing to extend gameplay because not lots of space so gotta make it worth it, Crash 4 from what i've seen fits with the old school difficult but has the modern issue of having lots to do... those two things conflict into a nightmare for completionists

im 5 months late i know but i was literally always back to 99 lives thru the whole game. Crash 4 hands out lives like candy

I ran out of lives mnay times in insane trilogy vs crash 4 lol.
I played until the last boss level in retro mode. The last levels were so frustrating, I remember spending mid day just to complete 1 or 2 levels. I couldn't beat the boss and I ended up the game with the infinite lives mode, just so I wouldn't waste more time with this frustrating game. I am not a big fan of the art direction either, to me crash bandicoot 3 on the original playstation is still the king (by far compared to crash 4).
I got over 100% completion on crash one and three. Crash four is ridiculously hard.
I feel like the purple relics not being required for anything is perfect, it lets you pick your difficulty level just like modern mode.

I'm playing the game right now and am only doing the basic gems, since this game was very difficult for me compared to the N' Sane trilogy. And the fact this man 100% this game, which means not dyeing once and collecting all boxes in a level to get the perfect relic is LEGENDARY, I RESPECT THIS MAAAAAAAAAAN.

Glad to see you made a good judgment call on passing on those absurd speedrunner time trial challenges. If a GDQ runner can rock those, that’d be wild to see, but only as a novelty. Good on you for taking care of yourself when needed.
This is how you make a sequel that doesn’t throw out what made the original great but also doesn’t feel like a retread.
Dear Paper Mario: Take Note!
By making it balls hard and long for no reason? By making a game that tiring to play due to long levels that need to be beaten in one sitting? By scattering 300 boxes in a 1 hour level and asking the player to search this space? By having camera issue? Nah, this game screwed up.
@@cixlo THANK YOU for saying that. I'm playing through the game now and am bewildered by the overwhelming praise the game gets. It's a solid game, sure, but it has a lot of flaws that really hamper my enjoyment.

I wish the checkpoint crates would have some kind of visual indication if you’ve gotten all the boxes by that checkpoint(which you’d see before breaking the crate). There’s so many hidden boxes and the levels aren’t short. The game was fantastic otherwise.
While that sounds like a good idea, you’d still have to reset the level because it would be too late by then

@@sickman9124 If the checkpoint crate itself would have a visual tell(different color or something like that) if you have everything or not, you could just not break it. Then restart from the previous checkpoint by jumping to a pit or something, or try to move backwards.

Well, I've just checked the manual for the PAL version and couldn't find the phrase "it's about time". While there are lots of mentions of "time" (particularly in the time trial section!), the closest it got to this phrase was "Travelling through time is definitely a warping experience" and Uka Uka saying "We will rule... in TIME!".

Naughty Dog didn't sell the IP, they never owned it to begin with. It was owned by Universal, then later aquired by Activision. Universal was or is actually pretty bad about these things. A similar rights issue is what caused Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game to be taken off of stores.
I wanna say Sony is dumb for not buying the Crash rights at some point, but Naughty Dog rarely returns to old series, and the fact this one returned is nice.

Actually, Crash was saved by Activision. Yeah, sounds weird but it's true. ND worked on 4 Crash games and after that Universal (they owned the rights) gave them to other devs. Universal milked the franchise dry. They didn't give other developers time and they also didn't let them do what they wanted to do.
Also I am pretty sure N Sane Trilogy was released in 2017
@@darkfyraproductions7958 You should be a bit patient. The Reignited Trilogy was a huge success. They'll probably make a Spyro 4 someday. Toys for Bob(the devs of Reignited) made Crash 4, so they obviously couldn't make Spyro at the same time. Give it some time, we'll see Spyro soon.

There's one good thing about the triple spin:
It isn't the fastest way to move. In Crash 4 the slide spin dash is significantly faster to the point it can outpace certain sections of the game.
Actually that’s not completely true. If you watch what the dev time time trial ghosts are doing, you’ll notice it’s a combination of the two.

Still playing through. I would be more inclined to get the N. Sanely Perfect Relics if the restart level load times weren't so long. It's not as bad as WoC, but it still kills the momentum. Good on you for seeing it through.
I totally prefer badass Crash 4 Tawna over the “honestly-just-there” Crash 1 Tawna.
It does make me wonder if Toys For Bob got the idea of making her badass because of how she actually tries to fight for her escape in the N-Sane remake of Crash 1 instead of just staying captured at Cortex’s lair.

When I played and streamed this game and then I saw the amount of absurd stuff you had to do in game for some of the gems, the first thing that came to my mind is: “The Completionist is going to have a field day with this.” Fast forward a couple days to this video. Godspeed Jirard!
It's a nightmare trying to complete the game blind though, you have to have a box guide on hand. Nothing worse than doing a box run on a hard level with a hard as nails bonus level to find you missed 2 hidden off-screen boxes, it's beyond infuriating and having a game guide to hand that you have to keep checking slows the game down and takes the fun away
I like how Neo Cortex is basically Celeste, and Dingodile is Blinx the Cat.

When Crash was created Cortex didn't play like Celesete and Dingodile didn't play like Blinx.

I feel like the purple relics are just for those that want some goal to strive for if they still want to play after getting everything else. That they don't offer any reward other than bragging rights is why they are allowed to be so insane

I could never 100% this. Just finished my first play through of crash 4 a few days ago and I died over 100 times on the last platforming level before the boss fight
