    It's safe to say that the JRPG genre would not exist without Dragon Quest. The quest system, turn based combat, level grinding, it's all owed to the herald of it's time. If you don't know this game you know of it's art. It was the first video game Akira Toriyama worked on, and the big stand out here are the monsters. Each design has character to it and are all so unique. A tradition that has carried even to the latest iteration in it's three decade run; Dragon Quest XI. But it's not just the art and Dragon Ball vibes that make it stand out (they both have dragons, they both have balls). The music is spectacular and blew the world wide open for video game music. It's another great classic addition to the Nintendo Switch.

      Builders 1 takes place I think like a century or so later. The dragon lord has stripped the power of Creation from the populace meaning they can't make medicine, weapons, armor, buildings etc. Even if they know how they are literally incapable. MC of the game is the legendary Builder, woken up by the goddess to go out to give them building power back and repair what's fallen apart one town at a time. A story focused minecraft-like, sectioned into individual chapters.

    I've beaten the first game five times now. It truly is its own reward for beating.
    The real world sucks, but that feeling of being a lone hero going up against a world of evil and saving it is soothing for the soul. As you grind for hours to get slightly better, your mind unpacks and relaxes, assured you're making progress on your noble quest. I love a lot of RPGs, but the simpleness of this first one always has me come back to it.

    What an amazing game, consider me a fan.

      I'm glad you enjoy it! I'd recommend III, IV, V, VI, and VIII as the best games in the series that you should prioritize next. Ideally you should play a translated Super Famicom version of III, rather than the butchered, overpriced Switch port. I prefer the SNES versions of V and VI, but if you can get over the low quality DS sound chip and dual screen design, then that version is much easier to play in the west.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 3 года назад

      @@DeltathRiylaan I enjoyed VII (I played the PS1 version), but it's just too damn long for its own good. It has 2 or 3 Dragon Quest games shoved into one package, and while I enjoy the cities and their stories, it's too much. It's also somehow the most grindy Dragon Quest game, requiring MUCH more EXP to get a level than any of the other games. The party members are good, but it's one of the weaker casts in the series in my opinion. Still a good game, but I just don't think it's very beginner friendly, and should probably be one of the last main series Dragon Quest games that someone plays. I agree, though, people should end up playing all of the games eventually, I was just saying some good ones to start with!

    My favorite part about the Dragon Quest Erdrick Trilogy, as both a massive fanboy and someone into game design, is how you can see it works to ease players into the concept of RPGs better than FF:MQ or even Pokemon attempted to. The games have such a clear sense of progression from area to area and game to game in terms of equipment, enemy progression (the classic "bridge = difficulty spike" the series is known for), dungeons, combat, party mechanics, etc. It's a series meant to ease unfamiliar console gamers into the core gameplay of CRPGs, while at the same time not coddling the player in the same manner as Pokemon, Mythic Quest, or similar games. It makes the games a great experience even to this day.

    • @blazesalamancer8767

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 4 года назад

      @@blazesalamancer8767 I've always wanted to get into game design tbh, but I'm a business major and I don't know shit about programming. More of a Jobs than Wozniak. But yeah, it's one of those games from an era where you couldn't spam tutorials and had to assume the player had no experience, ergo human factors play a huge role in its design.
      While I'm not the biggest fan of constant nostalgiabaiting in video games (indies in particular as of late) the best place to look for how to design a game is the classics of the arcade and pre-32bit era, purely because the limited means of conveyance usually required intuitive design. Nobody bothered to read the manual and the target audience was kids and teens with a low attention span, so they had to make games with a relatively low initial learning curve that got more complex as you explored them.
      I'm not the biggest fan of Turn-Based JRPGs but I love DQ, and as a fan of D&D and other RPGs I admire the way it manages to guide the player with out feeling like it's hand-holding. And the evolution of the series throughout the Erdrick Trilogy is particularly fascinating.

      The flaws in a game really stand out when you swear not to play any other games until you finish it. For some reason, DQ2 saps my energy like nobody's business.
      It kinda feels like everything is taking three times longer than it actually is for me, which is the opposite of how good games feel.
      By contrast, I liked the original, I heard that many consider the third the best in the series, and even a cursory glance at XI tells me it's one of the best RPGs in recent years.
      Also, don't feel bad about looking up a map in the first three games. The dungeon design in the second game hurts me deeply. I'll see if I can link a picture I made...

    5 months ago I was watching this because I was bored and this piqued my interest. Now I’m watching it because it makes me feel better in light of current circumstances. Thanks Jirard for making these video. You and your crew are pretty awesome.

    I love Dragon Quest so much, and these Switch ports are a travesty. I'd have paid a lot more if they'd ported them into the DQ XI 2D engine, which is absolutely stunning.

      Dunky saying something stupid in a bad attempt to be funny? That so rarely happens...

      @@TheDapperDragon I mean, if you take it seriously, I think most comedians end up not being funny. Do you actually think Dunkey thinks that?

    • @TheDapperDragon
      @TheDapperDragon 4 года назад +1

      @@firstmategiddy Well, for one, there's your big mistake: Dunkey's not a comedian, he's an idiot.
      For two: Any good humor has a kernal of truth to it. A joke with no basis in reality isn't funny, it's just nonsense.

    • @firstmategiddy
      @firstmategiddy 4 года назад

      @@TheDapperDragon Sounds like you hate Dunkey because he has an opinion? Really mature of you. Not to mention the video this quote is from is for Dragin Quest 11, which he gave a 3/5, which is pretty good for him.

    • @TheDapperDragon
      @TheDapperDragon 4 года назад

      @@firstmategiddy so, how does this mean I "hate him for his opinion?" I know you're not that bright, being a dunky fan, but try hard.
      I don't care what he said. I care that his "joke" has no kernal of truth, making it not a joke, but simple nonsense.
      Unless me stating "we're talking by sending smoke signals." Is a joke, rather than just a stupid statement irrelevant to anything.

    I get so nostalgic about this game. Next to the original Final Fantasy, this was the other NES JRPG I saw my brothers play. Funny thing is that, I only recently completed this game and I still have an urge to return to it.

    I'll never understand the US' obsession with Final Fantasy, while they dismiss Dragon Quest.
    Maybe they should give all the monsters angry eyebrows, like Kirby, to make it more apealing in the US. Friggin weirdoes

      While I don't agree with his opinions, you have to consider the fact that he's almost 90. You can't change someone's views on life when they get to that age. I bet it'd be pretty hard to find a 90 year old in Southern America who's not racist, for example. He'll be dead soon anyway, might as well respect the fact that he's STILL composing to this day than hating him for being an old man with outdated beliefs.
