It also got the "not localized" curse. The original DQ5 and DQ6 for Super Famicom were not localized until their DS remakes.
I'm surprised that no one brought up the fact that Dragon Quest was such a Japanese sensation, that when the third installment was released on a work day there, dozens and dozens of students committed hokey to buy it. Adding to that was students stealing copies from each other and attempted shoplifting of the game.
Enix, at the time, who knows if this still applies, has promised the Japanese government to only release future Dragon Quest games on Sundays and bank holidays.
That's not a true story though, Sunday is just the day that tends to get the most people in the store.

Below are my sources for the Dragon Quest 3 story. While a couple are questionable, I really only needed the first one and I thought more couldn't hurt. And while the sources do seem to agree that an actual Japanese law was never enacted, they also seem to agree that it was just Enix's own policy. Everyone agrees that the events of truancy DID happen.
And while I couldn't find an online image of the reference that the source I originally read this from used, I shall put that citation at the bottom of my list and cross my fingers for something sprouting from that:

Akira Toriyama's wife having to take his console away from him because of how addictive DQ is holds up all the way to DQ11 as well! The series is really addictive, it's hard to put the game down once you start
I really hope the Smash reveal boosts the popularity of Dragon Quest in the west. They're great games, and I don't want to go through another drought of not getting games localized. We had to fight to get the 3DS versions of VII and VIII.

Sadly here in Australia, I've never met another dragon quest fan, besides a friend who I introduced the series to. Nobody knows what I am talking about when I say "Dragon Quest is my favourite RPG series" then I say "Square Enix" then they say "Final Fantasy". I get hyped up whenever I hear someone mention Dragon Quest(namely Jon) because I barely ever hear people talk about dragon quest and even more rarely hear people as popular as Jon talking about it. I love Dragon Quest(especially 9. In fact I would go as far as to say it is my favourite game of all time).

I don't particularly like either series.
There are a few entries in each series though that I absolutely love for some reason, though.
For me, I loved Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2.
Aside from those games though, I'm not a particular fan of either franchise.

4 years after this videos release, I can finally appreciate it. DQ11 is among my top 3 jrpgs of all time. Persona 5 and FF7 being the others. If you're on the fence about getting this game, just get it. DQ11 took me 120 hours to complete. I enjoyed every minute and although the beggining felt a bit slow, if just kept getting better and better. This is one of the few jrpgs that I know I'll be replaying again.
I really like the art style of Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball/ Dragon quest artist) maybe its a nostalgic thing from growing up, but its awesome!
Why i like about DQ is that it never change but still have experimental in every title unlike FF series that have many experiment and it become very different series now

i've only played Dragon Quest 9 Sentinels of the Starry Skies. and it was AMAZING. I've put so much hours into it. Wish there was a new game for the 3ds tho
That was the first DQ game I played, and I didn't even own it, nor did I complete it (the original owner deleted the file as soon as they got their game back, dammit. I had the boat and had finally collected all of those damn fruits...but I kept getting beaten up by that dude. I forget his name.)

Thank you so much for this one! I love Dragon Quest and it NEEDS more exposure. I think this is my favorite episode so far! To people who love classic RPGs, please check this series out. It is one of the best and is on the levels of Final Fantasy, if not higher.

It's already been ported to the 3DS. The localized version arrives early 2017.
Dragon Quest and its creator, Yuji Horii, have some of the biggest influences on gaming ever and still do. Here's some extra facts:
- Dragon Quest came before Final Fantasy and is the first ever JRPG. It bridged the gap between Ultima, Wizardry and Portopia (Horii's own game) to create the JRPG we all know & love.
- Dragon Quest pretty much created all the tropes we take for granted in modern games, even for non-RPGs
- Yuji Horii's second game, Portopia, is also massively influential like Dragon Quest. It created the visual novel genre, inspired Zelda's existence, inspired Hideo Kojima to become a game designer and introduced dozens of tropes we take for granted today.
- Yuji Horii wrote the infrastructure for Chrono Trigger's story, including the time travel. Time travel is a common theme in Dragon Quest as well.
- Dragon Quest outsells every RPG that isn't Pokémon in Japan by an incomprehensible margin. DQIX sold 2.3 million copies in 2 days. They are also more excited for a 2nd DQXI port than they are for Final Fantasy 16.
- In Japan, Yuji Horii has a rockstar status and is just as loved as Miyamoto (Mario creator) by game designers and fans alike
Some smaller facts:
- Dragon Quest spawned orchestral music used in videogames
- It had the first ever videogame boss with an additional form
- It introduced "classes" to videogames
- Zelda II's map was directly inspired by Dragon Quest
- A lot of RPGs, including Pokémon, have references to DQ
- DQ is still, to this day, just as popular as franchises like Pokémon & One Piece in Japan

I really need to play a Dragon Quest game. Which should I start with?
If you are new to RPGs in general, I would recommend Dragon Quest IX. It has character customisation, it is, in my opinion, one of the best looking Dragon Quests, and the menu system and the skills, spells and vocations stuff is less complex. If you own a Nintendo DS or 3DS, then I recommend this game.
Well I started with Dq 9 but after that I fell in love with dq 5 it pretty good I'll tell'a what
I got into the series with DQ 8 so obviously i'll recommend 8 and with good reason, it's simply one of the best ps2 games ever made
My favourite is the fourth, Chapters of the Chosen. It's awesome. I haven't played very many of the others, though.. :P

The reason for medals from Dragon Warrior 4 being in Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA is actually known. Dragon Warrior 1&2 were released on a single cartridge, and this was the plan for 3&4 as well. For reasons unknown to me (cost, size on cart, etc), that plan was cancelled, but the incomplete medal data from 4 was left in the game. The location (and other field data) is actually incomplete, and defaults to equipment characters, like the hat icon.
I actually own a copy of Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA with all of these medals unlocked, AND I can save my data still. My friend had his cartridge break on him (he can no longer save), but he unlocked 26 copies of every medal in the game, including the Dragon Warrior 4 medals. If he trades any of the medals, it goes back to 26, essentially making infinite copies. We manually traded (cable link, back in the day!) every single medal to my game, and I unlocked the menus / medals in my game, but retained my ability to save. To my knowledge, I own one of the few (if only, who knows), cartridge with all of the medals, AND the ability to retain a save file.
Anywho, figured I'd share, since it's a pretty neat / rare easter egg!
My guess is actually because DQIV had a release on PS1 and it wasn't a part of the Erdrick series (which is the first 3 DQ games) Enix was planning on releasing the PS1 remake of DQIV in NA, but it was cancelled due to Enix of America going out of business and Enix buying out Squaresoft.
Well this confirms it. The game my brother says he played when he was younger is part of a series I didn't touch until about a decade later as a DS title.

Hey, how are you liking the game? Personally, I think it's amazing! Even though it's the one where the monsters appear the latest, there's a plot reason for that.
***** I've only played 4 and 5 on DS. 4 was alright, but 5 was absolutely fantastic. It's the game that got me into the series and I doubt any other game in the series will win me over as much as it.
Not that they're all bad, it's just I feel it set the bar pretty high. A lot of elements I really enjoyed, like monster recruitment, a family system and a story that goes throughout the hero's entire life.
I truly love this series. Its just so wonderfully charming. Just listen to the fanfare and let it take you away to another world.

Dragon Quest is one of my favourite game series of all time. I love old-school JPRG combat, I love grinding for the next level and piece of equipment (and thus having those levels and pieces of equipment really come with a sense of accomplishment), I love the incredible sense of adventure, I love the awesome character designs and hilariously unique monsters. Dragon Quest is the goddamn best.

Dragon Quest is what I can only describe as the most by the book RPG series I've ever played, but that's what I love about it, no other series has given me such a powerful feeling of adventure, where the opening theme just screams adventure. Seriously, trumpets and adventure go together like pasta and meatballs.
DQ 9 still holds a special place in my heart. Slime for smash !

I became very interested in DQ after the reveal, so now I’m trying to play some of its games and know some of its history. It’s very cool how Smash gives people interests into the games its characters come from.

+Did You Know Gaming I think the reason for the DQ4 medals in DQ3 on the GameBoy was because they might have initially tried to put DQ4 on the same cartridge, like with the DQ1&2 GameBoy port, but found out they didn't have enough space for it and just forgot to take the medals out. That's just my own theory, though.

The GameBoy Color version of DQ3 isn't the only time you are not allowed to use the name of the hero. If you try to enter "Erdrick" as your name in the NES version of Dragon Warrior 3 the game will scold you with a text box saying, "Input your name!" and will force you to re-enter your name.
Did you know? The Slime Controller is returning for the Switch... And they're ALSO making a Dragon Quest themed Switch as well (Slime Joycons (normal Slime on right, Bubble Slime on left), Erdrick Dock (Sword of Light and Erdrick's Shield on the front) and Monster Switch (various monsters on the back of it)). In the original release, DQ8's music was made in MIDI/chiptune. The fully orchestrated soundtrack was added for the North American release.
This game was also the first to be released under the name Dragon Quest in the US and the first to be released in Europe and thus lacks the Roman numeral in its title, thereby going by the full name Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King.
Also, the translation was handled by Square Enix Europe so the grammar and slang is accurate for the time period.

Just started playing the series :) I finished DQ1 in one sitting. Now some sleep and then the same with DQ2

Oh but I did. Played the translated SNES version. Reached level 19 and killed Dragonlord. I spent most of the day and night on it though.

Rocket slime was my first Dragon Quest game. Thanks for being a game that doesn't crush me with a grinding-required difficulty curve, otherwise I might've quit the series before my second game, DQ VIIII.
I think the unused monster medals would indicate that the GBC Dragon Warrior III was meant to include IV too originally, just like the first one combining I and II

Never knew the dragon ball creator helped make the characters in this series. That would explain why the art style is so similar I suppose.
It's not particularly unusual in the industry- Toriyama's done a good number of designs for games- Blue Dragon and Tobal No. 1 were other games he did the designs for. Similarly Kouske Fujishima of Oh My Goddess and You're Under Arrest fame did the character designs for the Sakura Taisen games, as well as several Tales games. The character you named your account after is one of his designs.

Yes, maybe Gamefreak was inspired a little by DQ: Terry's Wonderland (because DQ came first) for the menus on pokémon. The same way Mother/Earthbound was.
Dragon Quest was around before i could even pick up a controller. Once i got into gaming i eventually played most of them, these games made my childhood priceless and epic! :D
