    *Dragon Quest* is equivalent to *Star Wars* in Japan. It's HUGE!
    Series creator *Yuji Hori* , is often called "Mr. Videogame" there, as we call Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto as "Mr. Videogame" outside Japan.

    • @its_just_matt
      @its_just_matt 6 лет назад +33

      It's an apt comparison- Yuji Hori basically being the JRPG equivalent of George Lucas.

    • @wynterfoxx2517
      @wynterfoxx2517 6 лет назад +26

      But we don't call Miyamoto "Mr. Videogame".. Do we?

    • @hemangchauhan2864
      @hemangchauhan2864 6 лет назад +26

      Wynter Foxx Maybe. But when we usually think of video games and it's creators, we often link Nintendo games with Miyamoto.
      It's the same way with Dragon Quest and Yuji Hori.

      ashutosh Mishra yeah i realized after finishing this video that the official announcement was just made several hours ago, hence the increased coverage. The announcement was sudden/unexpected though. I was losing hope waiting for this game's localization because of SE's terribly cruel silence marketing tactics

    Someone graffitied some random concrete block off Highway 75 near Dallas, Texas with a slime from Dragon Quest (Known as Dragon Warrior Stateside at the time I first saw the graffiti.) As far as I know, nobody has every tried to clean it off or paint it over. It has just become The Highway 75 Slime... That's how popular Dragon Quest is.

      It's a trait caused by the overwhelming value of modesty and humility in Japanese culture, from what I understand. In polite conversation, you're supposed to downplay yourself and talk up others. Similarly, saying something to denigrate another, especially someone present, is practically forbidden. Look up the "Kyoto compliment" and Richard Feynman's quote on learning Japanese to get an idea of this cultural trait taken to extreme.

    Yuji Hori has a good point Enix missed a perfect opportunity for the "Dragon Quest" series outside of Japan when you look at the Super Nintendo. The RPGs that Squaresoft chose to localize were like the preliminary forecasts before the storms that were "Final Fantasy VII" and "Pokemon".

      gt3racer2187 Come to my room homie, you'll see the biggest final fantasy fan ever. XV is exactly what I wanted, I just wish the pacing and story telling was better, but it's exactly what I wanted. To me the risk they consistently take with each entry is one of the thing I look forward the most.

    • @gt3racer2187
      @gt3racer2187 6 лет назад +25

      @ Hideo Kojima While I appreciate your opinion, honestly, given the pacing and story telling alone, I don't know how this game could be exactly what any FF fan would have wanted. They were super lazy and stripped everything worthwhile out of the game and into DLC, movies and an anime. Plus, while I like that there are changes in the series as time goes by, the removal of turn based combat was not a welcome one. The gameplay wasn't great and if I wanted to play a Square action RPG I'd opt for Nier or Kingdom Hearts. Truth is, there hasn't been a good FF title since FFXII and that is the game FFXV should have been modeled after because that game actually did open world right.

    • @Invincible-Under-the-Sun
      @Invincible-Under-the-Sun 6 лет назад +6

      gt3racer2187 XII gambit system is a clear sign of change, so is FFX's superior type of turnbase and just the atheistic these FF have recently had is what I Love about Square they're not afraid to go from Magitek,to Steampunk, to college, to traditional fantasy, to hawaii. Dragon Quest is more of a you know what you're getting game which is ok I got no problems with that, but mostly feel like it relies on charm. FFXV had good music, the main party was good, the Dungeons were top tier, the summoning felt like an event, the magic was used in a realistic manner and the player actually had to think before using it, the combat was unique and also simple but it worked for the style of the game - it was fun which is all that matters most FF are easy games to begin within. I also like the feeling of adventure this game had, the hunts, the end of the day leveling up on camp, being able to ride your Chocobo almost anywhere. Yeah, I know this isn't FFXII, but for it to be in development hell, switch directors when most of the time developers just lose heart when a game is taking too much to develop I think this game turned up pretty solid in many ways. Nier Automata is my favorite PS4 game, but I'd give Platnium and the OST a lot of the credit, Yoko Taro has imo never made a good game before Automata. I like Kingdom Hearts, but they need to go back to more Disney and less Square Enix, I still think KH1 is the best. FFXV and XIV gave me hope for the future of FF. I know the Future of a Persona, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts I Love all those games and they never disappoint but to me each new Final Fantasy is an event.

    I like Dragon Quest more than Final Fantasy. I was in high school when I first played Dragon Quest III on GBC, then still Dragon Warrior here, and went back after that to the first two, not realizing that, spoilers for those who haven't played it, III was the prequel to I & II. Since then I've kept more Dragon Quest games on the machines I've picked them up for than Final Fantasy. It feels to me, knowing about this series here when so many still don't, it feels like I have special knowledge that I could and do give to others when I say, "Oh, if you like JRPGs, try Dragon Quest. It's grindy, I'll give you that, but the story of each game is so worth it. And hey, you like Dragon Ball, right? Akira Toriyama did the art and character and monster designs."

      In Yakuza 2 for the PS2, there's also reference to Dragon Quest. At certain point, go to SEGA arcade to the northwest, beat the green top gamer in a mini game and then he get angry before challenging Kiryu to a fight outside the arcade. The pre-fight text and the post fight text are reference to Dragon Quest's in game texts, such as Masaru recovers HP, Masaru is equipped with the legendary sword and the party is wiped out.

    He's absolutely correct about the lack of promotion being why Dragon Quest is less popular in the US than Final Fantasy.
    I remember the first game, called Dragon Warrior here at the time, and getting it alongside my first subscription to Nintendo Power, along with a map and a couple other things I think. I was terrible at playing it (not quite 5 years old yet, I think), but I loved it. And I never heard about a follow up until I had moved on to the Super Nintendo, and I never saw it in the stores (this being pre-internet and pre-gamestop, I would go to Toys R Us or even Target to buy games).
    I didn't get to experience the other games except on emulators or virtual console. But DQ 8 on the PS2 was amazing and reinvigorated my interest in the series. I'm really excited for this one actually showing up on consoles. And not being some weird MMO thing.

    Dragon Quest hasn't had as much of an impact in the west as Final Fantasy because none of the games have had an impact like Final Fantasy VII did for Final Fantasy. Even with Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy isn't as mainstream in the west as other western RPG series. JRPGs are still niche games in the west.

    I got into the Dragon Quest series back in high school, and my first DQ game was a fan translated SNES version of DQ 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (or just The Heavenly Bride) via emulator but after coming close to beating that game (my laptop/PC at the time died permanently), I bought myself a DS and Dragon Quest 9: Sentinal of the Starry Sky, I haven't regretted my purchase. Now I'm looking to add the DS version of DQ5 to add to my DS collection and I hope to find the "Definitive" versions of the rest of the series on Playstation 2 (I don't have ps3 or 4 sadly) or my DS.

    Awesome video on Dragon Quest. I grew up playing DQ and was always amazed by the story. In my opinion the DQ series wasn't as popular in the U.S. due to it not adapting 3D graphics as fast as Square did and also the gameplay was a bit slower.

    Dragon Quest and Super Mario, in that order, is what made me love the NES as a console. It ignited my imagination, improved my reading skills (I was 7 when the first game came out in the States), and made me appreciation thinking rather than acting. It shaped me into the person I am today in a lot of ways.
    As for why Final Fantasy is more popular in the states? I have two answers--translation went a ton quicker for those games than extremely text-heavy Dragon Quest. By the time the first, primitive game in the Dragon Warrior series arrived in the states, with a solo protagonist and limited animation and story, Final Fantasy came only a few months later with a 4-player customizable party, a fleshed out magic system, and side quests. Dragon Quest III, an objectively better game, was being released in Japan at this time. This why the US thought Dragon Warrior inferior.
    The other reason? The music on Final Fantasy, while seemingly classical, is influenced by prog, classic rock, and ambient electronica. Dragon Quest is probably what you might expect at a Mozart string quartet concert. Both are fantastic, but one is distinctly American.

      Just an example, they are releasing the new Mega Man, as well as the old one, so when they decide to bring the new DQ to Switch they should bring the older ones as well.

    • @IzzySarru
      @IzzySarru 4 года назад

      @@robtg9672 That'd be nice, since a lot of the older titles are rather inaccessible unless you're gonna emulate, which just isn't the same. Particularly titles like DQ IX (Though I'd like to get a graphical overhaul remake of that for PC and current gen consoles)

  • @Femaiden
    @Femaiden 4 года назад

    the difference between final fantasy and dragon quest is that
    ff tried to reinvent the wheel with every installment
    while dq plays it safe and reuses the same musics, the same enemies, the same items etc... and only does a different story, but the basic gameplay is the same.

    Obviously Horii is right. All games from the series were always published by Nintendo when in their consoles. For some reason Square and Enix just don't trust Dragon Quest will sell on Nintendo consoles outside of Japan

  • @NightFlyStudio
    @NightFlyStudio 6 лет назад

    Exactly. If Square had localized Dragon Quest V and VI on SNES, I think the success of Dragon Quest in the west would be much greater than it is today. Horii hit it on the nose. And ironically it was Square's willingness to localize and promote/market that got them into financial troubles, including The Spirits Within.
    And uh, this was the best video IGN has made in some time. Cool beans.
