Remember folks, these are supposed to be 'starter packs' for folks who have NEVER listened to the genre in question. Many people stating that 'x album or band isn't metal enough' are missing the point. All of these albums were considered metal or early metal back in the day, and for a complete newbie, are albums you need to have. Lots of bands being mentioned in the comments will show up in other shows, as I am looking got get in deep with all the sub-genres going forward.

@@wernermoritz882 "Heavy metal has long been impervious to cataclysmic intra-band events. One could argue that’s because most metal bands are forced to live in the moment: no sense daydreaming about chart success - there won’t be any. And stadium gigs are completely out of reach for all but a select few groups. Music videos? Pffft. So the problems that normally sidetrack rock and pop acts are dealt with by metal bands swiftly and efficiently. There’s no better example of this fact than the Australian band AC/DC who, 40 years ago, released the most unexpected and important album in hard-rock and heavy-metal history: the appropriately titled Back in Black, which has sold upwards of 50 million copies worldwide." "By some estimates, the movement [NWOBHM] spawned as many as a thousand heavy metal bands, but only a few survived the advent of MTV and the rise of the more commercial glam metal in the second half of the 1980s. Among them, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard became superstars, while Motörhead and Saxon also had considerable success."
@independenceltd. There has to be plenty more sources that have mislabeled AC/DC as metal. I've even seen the Cult categorized as heavy metal, not to mention Jethro Tull.
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (or the self titled debut) Deep Purple - Machine Head Rainbow Rising Metallica - Ride the Lightning Motörhead - Ace of Spades Judas Priest - British Steel Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Megadeth - Rust in Piece Anthrax - Among the Living Slayer - Reign in Blood
@@neuroisis85 "Next, 'Into the Fire' and 'Living Wreck' proved more concise but equally appealing, and though closer 'Hard Lovin' Man' finally saw the new-look Deep Purple waffling on a bit too long before descending into feedback, the die was cast for one of heavy metal's defining albums."
Hey Pete, in case you see this. I want to thank you and the rest of the gang for enlightening me to all these bands that I missed out on being born in 87. I've learned about so many great bands from this channel that don't get the recognition they deserve.
Back in Black is the album that completely changed music for me. I became totally obsessed with them. And there was so much to love from the past. So much.
I became obsessed with it too as a kid. Had it on cassette, and I remember playing and rewinding it over and over so I could write down the lyrics. It's a little easier to get song lyrics now
In no particular order: Judas Priest - Hellbent for leather Iron Maiden - Killers Megadeth - Rust in peace Scorpions - Lovedrive Ratt - Out of the cellar Black Sabbath - Mob Rules King Diamond - Abigail Dio - Holy Diver Ozzy - Diary of a madman Van Halen - (the 1st one) I tried to be a little diverse in my 10. There are a whole lot of others I would include. But, I think this is a nice variety.
I went with Stained Class because it was the best Judas Priest album that came out in the 70s. I know that it was British Steel that made them popular in the US, but they originated in the 70s. But Hell Bent for Leather is awesome 😎! The title track is my favorite song of theirs.
Van Halen is not heavy metal. Megadeth peace sells is where to start. Scorpions aren't really heavy metal but Blackout would be my pick as a better starter. I would put ac/dc van Halen scorpions, all in the hard rock category. Nice choices though. Rock on.
@@neuroisis85 Yes they are, google Heavy Metal mags from the 80s you will find those bands all over them, Did you not know Van Halen headlined Heavy Metal day at the US festival in 1983, nobody was complaining they weren't Metal. Metal has just expanded and grown over the years., Thrash really changed everything.
After over 40 years listening metal, I will recommend this 10 albums straight off the bat. No time to lose. 1) Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian. 2) Labyrinth - Return To Heaven Denied. 3) Sanctuary - Into The Mirror Black 4) Symphony X - Twilight In Olympus 5) Dream Theater - Images And Words 6) Stratovarius - Episode 7) Ynwie Malmsteens¨s Rising Force - Marching Out 8) Jag Panzer - The Fourth Judgement 9) Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden 10) Queensryche . The Warning
I don't think that's even the problem, it's just that these bands and albums mostly feel like the most stereotypical, meat and potatoes version of each selected genre
@@miguelbarahona6636 I meant you fail the assignment because the video was about listing Trad Metal, OG Metal or whatever you wanna call it not any subgenres.
I agree 80% with the list. I wouldn't put ACDC and Pantera since they're Hard Rock and Groove/Thrash, respectively. To complete the top10, I would add Accept's Balls to the Wall and Dio's Holy Diver. 🤘🏼
Pantera is unambiguously a metal band. Surely you understand that thrash is within the metal genre (in fact it's on the heavier side of the metal spectrum, usually intermediary between traditional metal and more extreme metal). As far as the groove element of their music is concerned, that style is literally referred to as groove metal. ACDC is generally considered a heavy metal band, but even if you think they're more closely aligned with hard rock than metal, it's hard to argue that Back And Black isn't metal enough to include in a list of recommendations for people new to metal.
Back In Black is a metal adjacent as it gets, so for me it gets a pass. You're more likely to like AC/DC being a METALLICA fan than being a COLDPLAY fan - although there will be some out there .....
I suspect Pete left of Holy Diver due to already including Dio in RAINBOW. Although I do agree Diver should be near the top 10, if not quite in it. GREAT album. I would have left off PANTERA and used them either in a groove list, or even thrash as groove is really a subsection of thrash.
Bunch of solid picks. Doing more generas is gonna be interesting. Here is my list. Dio-Holly Diver Iron Maiden-Number of the Beast Judas Priest-Screaming for Vengeance Black Sabbath-Paranoid Helloween-Keepers Part 1 Motörhead-Ace Of Spades Queensryche-Rage For Order Ozzy-Diary Of A Madmen Exciter-Violence And Force Trouble-Psalm 9
Black Sabbath - Paranoid Rainbow - Rising Judas Priest - Stained Class Motörhead - Ace of Spades Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast Metallica - Ride the Lightning Megadeth - Peace Sells Slayer - Reign in Blood Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime Pantera - A Vulgar Display of Power Edit: if Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer (and perhaps Pantera) are not considered pure 'heavy metal', and Queensryche could be slotted in the 'prog metal' list - then I'd replace those with something from this list: Dio - Holy Diver Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz Accept - Restless & Wild Riot - Fire Down Under Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations
@@independenceltd. Love me all of JPs early stuff, but SWOD is not the first album from them for heavy metal initiates to hear. Hellbent/Killing Machine, British Steel, or Screaming are all better choices.
I totally agree with you with the list! Here are a few albums I would like to add. Saxon - Denim and Leather, Accept - Restless and Wild, Manilla Road - Crystal Logic, Riot - Fire Down Under, W.A.S.P. - s/t, Manowar - Battle Hyms And Jag Panzer - Ampel Destruction !
for Priest I'd definitely pick 'Screaming For Vengeance' for a newbie. I mean just that opening punch...Hellion..Electric Eye...Riding on the Wind...Bloodstone...so great and IMMEDIATE. If that don't make you a fan, I doubt anything will.
Absolutely. I’d go with Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith or Hell Bent for Leather (first Priest album I ever heard) before British Steel.
When I was a newbie metal fan, I got into the genre via Mastodon, Trivium, In Flames, Opeth and Lacuna Coil. I didn't need the "classics" to embrace the genre. I did, however, come to love and embrace the classics later. I wasn't a newbie to metal when I came to love Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rush, Savatage, Saxon etc
I’m 61. Scorpions, Rush & UFO of which iv seen all 3 live numerous times, were not & never could be considered metal. Priest on the other hand, early & mid with KK, were. As Rob Halford regularly said by way of introducing Heading Out To The Highway live. Modern day Priest however, with Richie Faulkner, have evolved into a far more classier rock band. Their most recent recordings with RF stand well above those prior to. Firepower, Redeemer & Invincible Shield 🛡️ are superb rock albums & have elevated JP to higher levels of professionalism.
I mean it’s definitely got a lot of the compositional elements but that guitar tone is weak af. I mean if you can’t get a guitar tone that’s at least as heavy as Sabbath and Priest I can’t call you Metal.
@@andrehendrik Yea the aggressive riffage thing doesn’t factor in as much for me really. European Power Metal, a good chuck of Stoner Metal and most Atmospheric Black Metal don’t have really aggressive riffing and they’re still Metal. No doubt that Rainbow with Dio was a killer band though.
How music is classified in modern music is a moving target at best. After all, Elvis was once considered rock music, but nobody in their right mind today would consider that correct. One day your band is a metal band and a few years later they are calling you pop rock! I am old, so all the sub genres baffle me. In the late 70’s and especially in the 80’s, most bands were considered metal bands. All the hair bands were considered metal bands. For me, metal started with late 70’s KISS & UFO. Both had live albums that were pinnacle metal content for its time. I also know where I was the first time I heard Van Halen’s “Eruption.” All very metal.
Nice addition with Melissa. A highly influential record. I hid that record from my parents! Some might argue about AC/DC being “metal” but Back in Black’s production and visual look makes it feel like it.
@@dt6949I have often noticed a difference between what Europeans and North Americans like to place inside the (Classic) Metal category. I'm guessing it has to do with what we were told by local music critics at our respective sides of the Atlantic ocean. Americans tend to include Hard Rock bands more often (AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Van Halen, Deep Purple (both VH and Purple DO have one or two songs I'd dare call Metal though), Led Zeppelin, sometimes even bands like Molly Hatchet,...). I'm guessing that, since very early on Metal was in short supply in North America the net was simply widened a bit to include adjacent genres. There are a few early what I would consider true Classic Metal bands though. Fortnox comes to mind.
I'm not a newb (37 years old). But having played guitar and other instruments for 21 years across many genre's its fun to see how predictable or unpredictable this gets. My greedy 'more than 10' list in no order: (Honorable Brag: How will anyone know where to look?) Pantera -- Projects In The Jungle (Own an official CD copy used from a Vinyl store.... and No I'm not crazy. Love it better than anything with Phil.) Riot -- Thunder Steel (a 70's band got all thrashy....I inherited a promo poster of the album cover....Who the hell is Quiet? I'm only kidding!) Exciter -- Heavy Metal Maniac (Damn I love this album. That and the drummer doing vocals. Triumph sometimes did that. Exciter did it as a norm until a little later. Love this album better than anything in the big four.) Y & T -- Black Tiger (Dave Mineketti always seemed like Sammy Haggar with Eddie Van Halen's chops. Its a good thing. So is there 70's stuff.) Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force (YJM is Reason I play guitar and shred. I even have a signature Fender scallop. Also Jens Johansson is a Keyboard influence.) Fates Warning -- Awaken The Guardian (I first heard Specter Within. In any case. Prog fans will enjoy things in spite of the traditional feel). Triumph -- Rock 'N' Roll Machine (This entire band was overshadowed. I love Alex Lifeson....But c'mon man. He ain't Rik Emit)! Budgie -- Never Turn Your Back On A Friend (If its too 70's for them....Tony Bourge's 80's Tredeager: Remix Rebirth oughta do the damn trick) Judas Priest -- Stained Class (This needs more respect....I still listen to it more than any of the later albums). Scorpions -- Taken By Force (I saw Uli live in his solo band during 2017. It was like $25.00. But it was a $300.00 performance If I never see Scorpions live.... eh hard to complain considering the more rare experience I did get)! UFO -- Force It (I often felt that this was the U.K. band that really should've blown up more than it did.) Loudness -- Disillusion -- (Longtime Loudness and J-metal fan. Even before You Tube. X-Japan was my intro. I'd include them as well.) Van Halen -- (#1! And 2 ain't bad either.) Thin Lizzy -- Thunder & Lightning (There will never be another Lynott, or Thin Lizzy. John Sykes is too underrated.) Ozzy -- Tribute (What's a better album? Blizzard or Diary?.... The answer is Tribute!) Iron Maiden -- Peace Of Mind (Steve Harris is when I decided to learn Bass starting with Killers. Peace Of Mind is just amazing.) Running Wild -- Under Jolly Roger (We have new pirate metal bands now. But when I heard this in high school, I wondered when's the next?) Helloween -- Keeper Of The 7 Keys Pt. 1 (Dragon Force fans need a history class....before they make the same mistake....) King Diamond -- Abigail (I worked a decade at a Library. But even before that, I was a regular there. This album is the first I checked out. Educational shit to be honest....How they allowed an album like that to circulate? Won't question it!) What's on your shelf?

When I started listening to metal, there was no one to recommend which albums to start listening to. Everyone has their own path to the world of heavy music and it is difficult to recommend anything to someone there.
I'm seeing great picks from everyone! For a newbie, here are some "less obvious" picks I'd recommend. - Judas Priest: Stained Class - Motörhead: Overkill - Iron Maiden: Killers - Accept: Restless and Wild - Mercyful Fate: Don't Break The Oath And some other types of metal: - Metallica: Kill Em All - Slayer: Show No Mercy - Megadeth: So Far, So Good, So What? - Celtic Frost: Morbid Tales

@@takodabostwick8507Mine too. I was going with "Overkill" cuz it was first (for the Motorhead blueprint going forward), but that doesn't mean "most accessible" which is why I dropped it.
Looking forward to the fusion top! My choices would be: Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind Black Sabbath - Paranoid Metallica - Ride the Lightning Megadeth - Rust in Peace Deep Purple - Machinehead Dio - Holy Diver Rainbow - Rising Helloween - Keeper of the Seventh Keys Ghost - Prequelle Visigoth - The Revenant King (If you haven't heard them please do, I loved this band first listen)
10 must-hear heavy metal albums (for newbies) in my book (and I'm talking classic heavy metal, not what came later, in the 90s etc). 1. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell 2. Iron Maiden - Killers 3.Rainbow - Long Live Rock'n'Roll 4. Metallica - Master of Puppets 5. Judas Priest - British Steel 6. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman 7. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime 8. Riot - Fire Down Under 9. Motorhead - Ace of Spades 10. Deep Purple - Machine Head
This is a cool topic which I have thought about sometimes. There are (at least) a couple of ways to approach this question: 10 albums that showcase "what is metal", or 10 "historically significant" albums from the more mainstram subgenres, that are also palatable for someone who has never listened to heavy music before. My list is more towards the second interpretation: - Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath Paranoid - Iron Maiden Piece of Mind - Judas Priest Stained Class - Judas Priest Painkiller - Deep Purple In Rock - Rainbow Rising - Metallica Ride the Lightning - Dream Theater Images & Words - Haken The Mountain Mostly obvious choices, nothing strictly extreme but some early thrash. Two bands appear twice because they exemplify two different styles to perfection. For maiden you can replace with any of the first 7 albums. Chose PoM because it is the first with the "full" lineup and immediately draws you in with a killer drum intro.

Pete.. Good Morning.. Great GREAT idea for a new series.. After you told me about it.. i put together my own list very quickly and had to stop myself.. LOL.. Have a great weekend..
love it! PETE, this is going to be a great series brother! i might add, OR MAY I ASK Please, since this is going to be geared more to newbies i think it would be really helpful as well as insightful since your going to do sub-genres of metal like thrash, speed ,death metal etc. that you maybe also briefly explain what differentiates thrash from speed, or death from doom etc. ,i think that would really go along way for newbies just getting into metal, or prog, or fusion etc. because i know over the years that newbies can get overwhelmed ,or more so confused, about the differences between say thrash and speed metal and what differentiates the two sub-genres... hell, even us guys with and getting the "olds" might even learn a new thing or two as well, or at least get your opinion on what differentiates them from one another. i personally would really enjoy that ,but more so, i think the newbies would get a MUCH better picture of it all ,and whos to say, might even listen a little more in detail to them for those differences as well. just a thought but hope you will do that in the upcoming episodes, thanks as always for the content Pete!! \m/ \m/

Loving the series so far! Love this 'starter pack' kind of episodes - always love the intention of them: are we giving a history? Chronology? Trying to showcase a bit of the genre-bending or diversity? Tons of directions you can take them in, but always tons of fun.
I remember my first copy of kerrang in 1988 recommending 5 albums every metal head should own, I think it was Back in Black, Piece of Mind, Moving Pictures, Rocks and Paranoid. I started with A for Aerosmith and never looked back.
@@independenceltd.Of course back then there just weren't the labels we've got now, half of them didn't even like the term "heavy metal". Like yourself I think Kerrang was trying to cover the bases. Sabbath as the foundation, Aerosmith for blues/hair metal, ACDC for heavy/pub rock, Rush for Prog and of course New Wave coming from Maiden. 6 albums could have included Master of Puppets and that would do it for me. Purple/Zep definitely honourable mentions (but let's not go there, where would it end) 👍👍
@@assortedbile5381 I was watching "Iron Maiden: The Early Years" (I believe) and they were showing the "Soundhouse Top 25 Heavy Metal Songs," with Maiden occupying two top ten spots with their "new" "Soundhouse Tapes" release, and I remember seeing Heart and Styx also on the list. I laughed, specifically thinking about ppl like this who'd have a conniption seeing those bands listed on a "metal' list.
We are talking about a Newbie. It is not the same to know a deep knowledge about Heavy Metal than being a newbie in this field. I wouldn´t choose The number of the beast, but if you don´t know Maiden, this is the perfect album. The same with British Steel or Paranoid. 1. Black Sabbath: Paranoid 2. Rainbow: Rising 3. 5 same albums, and Montrose is probably a better pick than "VHI," except for maybe the name recognition. And Eddie's a "shredder," so if I didn't have a shredder on my list then I'd have to drop else someone for Yngwie. Thanx for helping me realize I made the right choices. 😬
Another great list, Pete. I would also add… 1. SAINT…’Time’s End’ 2. Shout…’In Your Face’ (Sammy Hagar’s cousin, Ken Tamplin) 3. Guardian…’Miracle Mile’
Great episode. In a similar vein, I always hoped you do a "Top 5 (or 10) songs to introduce someone to Heavy Metal" in roundtable format. Again, not necessarily a group's best song, but more of what defines HM.

Coz some newbies have to start out not so heavy and work their way up.. Plus back when this stuff was new it was called Heavy Metal.. Any mag of Metal of the day "Metal Edge" and "Kerrang" had all of them within it's pages.. Back in the day they would call BON JOVI Metal.. Now that is off base but they did.. Look at the Heavy Metal soundtrack that had Devo Stevie Nicks Cheap Trick And Open Arms By Journey on it.. NONE of that was Metal.. My Friends and I started a local radio show on collage radio called Metal Monday in 1984 and we had to play all over the board to satisfy every listener.. When it comes to Mercyful Fate it is all up to the newbie some can't take it and some can.. All according to the person.. It is a tricky subject.. I been listening to bands that most don't discover til they are 18 or so when i was 4 and 5.. Plus in a band for 25 years.. This is a show about newbies remember everyone is different in what they can start off with.. Some have to work their way up which is why i did it that way.. I knew a lot who had to start off with hard rock and move up.. i knew a lot of people who started out with Mercyful Fate and Venom.. But most of my picks are METAL!!!!!!!!!!!! PS kind of like Elvis Costello , Talking Heads and Blondie list goes on on and on are called Punk Rock.. Are they punk like Sex Pistols , Anti Nowhere League , Minor Threat , Dead Kennedys ect ect NO.. But they are still considered to be.. Music is in levels.. It is all according to the listener.. I learned that from radio and being in a band.. As Pete wisely says we all hear music differently.. People aren't all the same.. True and Nothing wrong with that.. Think of it , If someone can't take the hard rock of Kiss , Aerosmith , Deep Purple and even the Metal of Black Sabbath.. How will they be able to take Thrash ect ect?? That is why some not all have to start off Hard Rock and work way up.. If it is forced beyond what they can take at that time there will be no enjoyment or even headbanging.. LOL.. It is meant to bring people together not tear apart.. Not meant to fight over.. Enjoy music is what it boils down to in the long run..

I usually recommend "starter packs" with compilations from artists rather than specific albums, cos I figure the best-of, greatest-hits, retrospective, etc, truly give the newbie a broader "flavor" of what the band/artist has done over the years, more than any one album can really convey. This is especially vital when bands can evolve so extremely that the stuff can seem like night and day, and if a person were to decide that upon hearing recommended "x album" was not to their liking, they might write off the entire band over a single album that was really just a one-off/experimental thing and not a true reflection of the band's material. Likewise the reverse can happen, where a truly amazing album gives the impression of an amazing band, but in fact that amazing album was a fluke and nothing else the band has done before or since could touch it, and the newbie might be disappointed upon discovering this. For example, I "got into" Rush cos of Chronicles, but upon further exploration discovered I was not wholly crazy about most of the material on any specific album. Had I started with a particular album, I might have not paid much attention beyond the 1 or 2 "hits" from that volume and not probed further, thereby missing out on all the other "1 or 2" gems that Chronicles exposed me to.
Scorpions' Best Of Rockers N Ballads was probably the most influential compilation to pull me in beyond the 2 hits I'd known at the time in 1984 (Rock You Like A Hurricane, Still Loving You - what else, right?). What an amazing path of discovery that was, that R'N'B collection! Great stuff, plunging me right into the "peak" era of material from 1979-1989, showcasing greats from Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism, Blackout, Love At First Sting, and Savage Amusement. Crazy World came out shortly after, with Wind of Change and Send Me An Angel compelling me to grab the album, and that officially commenced the entire album acquisition objective ; first the 80s albums, then keeping up with the 90s and beyond, and eventually finally tracking down all the 70s stuff. Not to besmirch specific albums, however ; the right album out of the gate DOES have its merits, for sure - don't misundertake me on that one, lol. After all, I got into Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest just with an album or two, before either of them had released any compilations. For JP, it was Defenders Of The Faith and Screaming For Vengeance (for their "hits" of course, Love Bites and You've Got Another Thing Coming, respectively) and later, Painkiller, after hearing the title track on a various artist compilation called Hard N Heavy, released in 1991 on Canadian label Quality Records (compilations being not limited to single artists! V/A mixes are great "starter packs", too!). The Painkiller album, upon obtaining it, really administered the proverbial kool-aid though, and that was when I picked up the Metal Works compilation, to get an idea of everything else they've done, prior to SFV (with the exception that there was nothing from Rocka Rolla or Sad Wings of Destiny on that collection, but I did hear The Ripper on another v/a compilation from the 1980s). Still, I was all in and decided after Metal Works, I was gonna collect all of JP's releases. So I suppose in addition to "starter packs" with specific albums, I have found that the "milestone compilations" (hits, best, etc) and the V/A collections can be great starters, too! :-)
Never understood why so many people consider AC/DC as a metal band. 🤷♂️ To me, they are more of a blues-based hard rock band. I don’t hear the metal aesthetic in their sound.
"Back In Black was released on July 21st, 1980 - five months and one day after Bon Scott had died. Rolling Stone writer David Fricke declared the album a masterpiece and a milestone in rock. 'Back in Black is not only the best of AC/DC’s six American albums,' Fricke wrote. 'It’s the apex of heavy metal art: the first LP since Led Zeppelin II that captures all the blood, sweat and arrogance of the genre. In other words, Back In Black kicks like a mutha.'”
Back when this album came out Hard Rock and Heavy Metal just went together, there were no sub-genres beyond that; if you were a metal head chances are you liked Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Van Halen and AC/DC. But yes AC/DC is a hard rock band.
Just remember, at the time, Journey was considered hard rock. So, by comparison, AC/DC was considered Heavy Metal. Also, Lemmy always said Motorhead was a Rock and Roll band. So ....?

It’s amazing how so many people don’t listen to the content creators thesis/disclaimer : this episode is about classic heavy metal and yet people are listing Metallica and Megadeth. Pete clearly said thrash would be a different episode.
Metallica does have a few non thrash albums and one of them is the biggest selling metal album of all time and one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Still on the billboard top 200 33 years after it was released.
@@soulcrusher807 yes but Metallica is considered thrash overall so he implied no Metallica today. They are not in the category of classic metal according to Pete.
@@djacobmadrigal I personally would include it because it is the biggest metal album in terms of sales and what the band is most well known for. I personally think the album is shit, but I can't deny how many people who don't like metal can at least tolerate the singles so to me that says it would be a top 10 starting point.
Exactly. I'm not a Metallica fan whatsoever these days I'm over them but the album that best reps them would HAVE to be Puppets, it just is. Essential thrash starter kit I guarantee will be on his list.
Excellent selection! For the most part can't agree more. I'd just switch "back in black" for "highway to hell" and include Dio's "Holy Diver". Thanks 🍺🤘!
These lists are always interesting more for the questions they raise than the suggestions they offer. For example, why include AC/DC, which most would classify as hard rock, or at this point, classic rock? More broadly, is the goal to pick historically significant albums, albums with a critical consensus for excellence, albums that might be palatable to someone coming from a particular genre? If I were to make a list like this, not knowing a listener's tastes or musical background, I'd probably pick things from across the years that hint at the full historical and musical range of metal, so extreme metal genres would necessarily be included to give an accurate picture of what metal can do musically. And you don't want to assume that the best entry into metal is music that is relatively tame and digestible. Someone into avant garde jazz or the more experimental forms of classical music might find Ozzy or Maiden a snooze but perk up to prog metal or some really abrasive black metal.
I completely agree with you but to be fair to Pete he does say in the video that he is just covering old school Metal ie the stuff before the subgenres emerged. I believe he said he will be doing vids for the other Metal genres though.
Understood, but he contradicts himself by including Pantera. Both the style and date of that album put it outside classic "pure" heavy metal.@@neuroisis85

Now he could’ve picked something like Eternal Champion or Riot City, or any of the other bands being lumped together as the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal. There's a few distinctions to be made here. "Classic Rock" isn't a genre or sub-genre of Rock. When I was a kid in the seventies, "Classic Rock" was a term used by journalists to separate what was then called Hard Rock (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, etc.) from the earlier rock like Kinks, Rolling Stones, The Who, Small Faces, Cream and some such. And yes, we, on mainland Europe, called Black Sabbath's music "Hard Rock". It wasn't until Judas Priest's 1977 "Sin After Sin" that the moniker "Heavy Metal" started to be used, but it wasn't until Metallica came to the scene that the term became a household name, again to separate that style from Hard Rock. There's always been a bit of confusion about what was what, mainly thanks to American journalists who didn't know their heads from their arses. I mean, some nutjobs called Eagles heavy metal and once upon a hungover monday Jethro Tull got the Grammy for "best heavy metal release" for their "Crest Of a Knave" album. Go figure. Ian Anderson wasn't much impressed and even refused to accept the Grammy. There's always been a distinction between the USA, England and mainland Europe. "We" called Iron Maiden "Hard Rock", while in England the lads were part of the NWOBHM because the term Heavy Metal hadn't gotten across the channel yet. I saw Maiden at the 1980 Reading Rock Festival and noticed people called 'em Heavy Metal. In the end it doesn't matter what style you glue to a band, as long as you like the music. And I don't always have to agree to agree...
Gonna add my choices here: Ride The Lightning - Metallica Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera Van Halen I - Van Halen (this is on the line) Metal Health - Quiet Riot Peace Sells (But Who's buying?) - Megadeth British Steel - Judas Priest Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Slipknot - Slipknot Paranoid - Black Sabbath

@independenceltd. AC/DC was never considered a metal band. Scorpions weren't until Rock you like a Hurricane hit, and that was completely media driven.

Red Starr of Smash Hits was more critical, saying he found the songs indistinguishable from one another and marred by hypermasculine fantasies, rock music stock phrases, garish guitar, and dull rhythms, on 'yet another triumph for lowest common denominator headbanging-the new thoroughly predictable, thoroughly dreadful AC/DC album', and gave Back in Black a score of 3 out of 10."
I'd make a few changes, but the most important would be to suggest Metallica Master Of Puppets over Pantera Cowboys from Hell, since the latter came 1st and influenced the former.
Good list. My top ten would be Black Sabbath - Paranoid Rainbow - Rising Judas Priest - British Steel Motorhead - Ace of Spades or Overkill. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Dio - Holy Diver Anthrax - Among The Living Metallica - Master of Puppets Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss Megadeth - Rust in Peace AC/DC is decent, but not necessarily a metal band, even the band calls itself rock and roll. If I was going to include them, I would have chosen either Let There Be Rock or High Voltage both from the Bon Scott era. Pantera is another band that I wouldn't include as an intro. Although I think "A Vulgar Display of Power" would be better. For Slayer I chose Seasons in the Abyss. Reign in blood is often listed as a classic, but musically they got even better in South of Heaven and Seasons.
I never understood why so many people call AC DC (and Guns N Roses) metal. They're hard rock. Also would never recommend Mercyful Fate or Pantera to thr uninitiated. Metallica black album should be in the list.
When I was a teenager, I was more of an AC/DC, Def Leppard kind of guy. I had heard Iron Maiden, but it didn’t really interest me until I overheard someone listening to Live After Death. The live versions sounded so much more powerful! The guitars were heavier, the energy was higher, and it just sounded so badass. At that moment, I was hooked. They were my gateway into heavy metal and thrash, and I never looked back.
Thanks Pete for doing this series. I love progressive rock, jazz, and fusion but have always stayed away from heavy metal and progressive metal. It took me a long time to get into Deep Purple and early Rush. However, I know there is music to appreciate that I haven't listened to or given a chance. I remember not liking King Crimson "Starless and Bible Black" but I would keep returning to the album every so often. Then one day the veil was lifted and suddenly I understood and connected with the music. So thanks for doing the "starter packs" and providing a direction for people looking to explore further.

Van Halen is not heavy metal. Megadeth peace sells is where to start. Scorpions aren't really heavy metal but Blackout would be my pick as a better starter. I would put ac/dc van Halen scorpions, all in the hard rock category. Nice choices though. Rock on.

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Pantera - A Vulgar Display of Power

@@independenceltd. Love me all of JPs early stuff, but SWOD is not the first album from them for heavy metal initiates to hear. Hellbent/Killing Machine, British Steel, or Screaming are all better choices.
I totally agree with you with the list! Here are a few albums I would like to add. Saxon - Denim and Leather, Accept - Restless and Wild, Manilla Road - Crystal Logic, Riot - Fire Down Under, W.A.S.P. - s/t, Manowar - Battle Hyms And Jag Panzer - Ampel Destruction !
Two Ozzie albums and no Manowar, Helloween, WASP or Accept is a travesty.
for Priest I'd definitely pick 'Screaming For Vengeance' for a newbie.
@@reprintranchListen to Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden to know if you are or are not born to be wild.
I'm 60 yrs old . Grew up with ACDC and others and Iron Maiden. Great video Pete. Thanks
That explains why you think a super bluesy Hard Rock band like AC/DC is Metal. Pull your head out of the 80’s.
Tell that to Pete, who has AC/DC on his list.@@neuroisis85
I'd say Rising is a hard rock, not metal, album. But it definitely pointed the way toward metal.
"In issue 4 of Kerrang! magazine (cover-dated October 1981), Rising was voted the greatest heavy metal album of all time."
Some might argue about AC/DC being “metal” but Back in Black’s production and visual look makes it feel like it.
they were definitely metal in 1980
AC/DC is not, was not and has never been Metal. Same with Scorpions, bad choices when he could've picked Angel Witch or Diamond Head.
@@dt6949 i usually try to just ignore their naivete and let them revel in their mallcore and screamo.
Metal with major open chords? A black album cover doesn't make it Metal.
I'm not a newb (37 years old). But having played guitar and other instruments for 21 years across many genre's its fun to see how predictable or unpredictable this gets.
My greedy 'more than 10' list in no order:
(Honorable Brag: How will anyone know where to look?)
Pantera -- Projects In The Jungle (Own an official CD copy used from a Vinyl store.... and No I'm not crazy. Love it better than anything with Phil.)
Riot -- Thunder Steel (a 70's band got all thrashy....I inherited a promo poster of the album cover....Who the hell is Quiet? I'm only kidding!)
Exciter -- Heavy Metal Maniac (Damn I love this album. That and the drummer doing vocals. Triumph sometimes did that. Exciter did it as a norm until a little later. Love this album better than anything in the big four.)
Y & T -- Black Tiger (Dave Mineketti always seemed like Sammy Haggar with Eddie Van Halen's chops. Its a good thing. So is there 70's stuff.)
Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force (YJM is Reason I play guitar and shred. I even have a signature Fender scallop. Also Jens Johansson is a Keyboard influence.)
Fates Warning -- Awaken The Guardian (I first heard Specter Within. In any case. Prog fans will enjoy things in spite of the traditional feel).
Triumph -- Rock 'N' Roll Machine (This entire band was overshadowed. I love Alex Lifeson....But c'mon man. He ain't Rik Emit)!
Budgie -- Never Turn Your Back On A Friend (If its too 70's for them....Tony Bourge's 80's Tredeager: Remix Rebirth oughta do the damn trick)
Judas Priest -- Stained Class (This needs more respect....I still listen to it more than any of the later albums).
Scorpions -- Taken By Force (I saw Uli live in his solo band during 2017. It was like $25.00. But it was a $300.00 performance If I never see Scorpions live.... eh hard to complain considering the more rare experience I did get)!
UFO -- Force It (I often felt that this was the U.K. band that really should've blown up more than it did.)
Loudness -- Disillusion -- (Longtime Loudness and J-metal fan. Even before You Tube. X-Japan was my intro. I'd include them as well.)
Van Halen -- (#1! And 2 ain't bad either.)
Thin Lizzy -- Thunder & Lightning (There will never be another Lynott, or Thin Lizzy. John Sykes is too underrated.)
Ozzy -- Tribute (What's a better album? Blizzard or Diary?.... The answer is Tribute!)
Iron Maiden -- Peace Of Mind (Steve Harris is when I decided to learn Bass starting with Killers. Peace Of Mind is just amazing.)
Running Wild -- Under Jolly Roger (We have new pirate metal bands now. But when I heard this in high school, I wondered when's the next?)
Helloween -- Keeper Of The 7 Keys Pt. 1 (Dragon Force fans need a history class....before they make the same mistake....)
King Diamond -- Abigail (I worked a decade at a Library. But even before that, I was a regular there. This album is the first I checked out. Educational shit to be honest....How they allowed an album like that to circulate? Won't question it!)
What's on your shelf?
01. deep purple - in rock
02. black sabbath - master of reality
03. judas priest - painkiller
04. thin lizzy - thunder and lightening
05. motörhead - ace of spades
06. manilla road - crystal logic
07. iron maiden - killers
08. saxon - strong arm of the law
09. rainbow - rising
10. the michael schenker group - s/t

11. ozzy osbourne - blizzard of ozz
13. ac/dc - back in black
14. dio - holy diver
15. metallica - s/t
Manilla road rules!
When I started listening to metal, there was no one to recommend which albums to start listening to. Everyone has their own path to the world of heavy music and it is difficult to recommend anything to someone there.
Hell, my path Started with Ministry's ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ.
Cue the "That's not heavy metal" guy
I'm seeing great picks from everyone! For a newbie, here are some "less obvious" picks I'd recommend.
- Judas Priest: Stained Class
- Motörhead: Overkill
- Iron Maiden: Killers
- Accept: Restless and Wild
- Mercyful Fate: Don't Break The Oath
And some other types of metal:
- Metallica: Kill Em All
- Slayer: Show No Mercy
- Megadeth: So Far, So Good, So What?
- Celtic Frost: Morbid Tales
My top 5:
1. Judas Priest - British Steel
2. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
3. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
4. Motörhead - Overkill
5. Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
I originally had "Overkill" but I figured AOS was more accessible for a newb.
@@independenceltd.Overkill is phenomenal, but AOS is my favorite Motorhead album!
@@takodabostwick8507Mine too. I was going with "Overkill" cuz it was first (for the Motorhead blueprint going forward), but that doesn't mean "most accessible" which is why I dropped it.
Looking forward to the fusion top!
My choices would be:
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Deep Purple - Machinehead
Dio - Holy Diver
Rainbow - Rising
Helloween - Keeper of the Seventh Keys
Ghost - Prequelle
Visigoth - The Revenant King (If you haven't heard them please do, I loved this band first listen)
This sounds like a great series Pete!!! My favorite channel just keeps getting better!!!
10 must-hear heavy metal albums (for newbies) in my book (and I'm talking classic heavy metal, not what came later, in the 90s etc).
1. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
2. Iron Maiden - Killers
3.Rainbow - Long Live Rock'n'Roll
4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
5. Judas Priest - British Steel
6. Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman
7. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
8. Riot - Fire Down Under
9. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
10. Deep Purple - Machine Head
You can tell Pete is a guitar player by the way he holds his CDs lol love it!
Pete plays left-handed though. 😜
Always wondered if that's because of his love for Tony Iommi or it just came naturally.
@@jimmypage2843 Maybe a little of both!
Lol yeah! 🤣🤣🤣
He holds CDs like he's doing a power chord 😅
The two guitars hanging up in the background wasn't enough of a hint?
This is a cool topic which I have thought about sometimes. There are (at least) a couple of ways to approach this question: 10 albums that showcase "what is metal", or 10 "historically significant" albums from the more mainstram subgenres, that are also palatable for someone who has never listened to heavy music before.
My list is more towards the second interpretation:
- Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
- Black Sabbath Paranoid
- Iron Maiden Piece of Mind
- Judas Priest Stained Class
- Judas Priest Painkiller
- Deep Purple In Rock
- Rainbow Rising
- Metallica Ride the Lightning
- Dream Theater Images & Words
- Haken The Mountain
Mostly obvious choices, nothing strictly extreme but some early thrash. Two bands appear twice because they exemplify two different styles to perfection. For maiden you can replace with any of the first 7 albums. Chose PoM because it is the first with the "full" lineup and immediately draws you in with a killer drum intro.
2:40 Pete’s list
SPOILER ALERT
1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2. Rainbow - Rising
3. Judas Priest - British Steel
4. AC/DC - Back In Black
5. Motörhead - Ace of Spades
6. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
7. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
8. Scorpions - Blackout
9. Mercyful Fate - Melissa
10. Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Very cool starter list Pete. I'm a little surprised that you included AC/DC. I would've thought you'd consider them more Hard Rock than Metal.
@@christophercoles4401 Yeah, also if Deep Purple are going to be in the Hard Rock category then Rainbow aren't any heavier so I don't know why that is 'metal'...
@@christophercoles4401 Agreed. BIB was a surprise as well as Pantera. As much as I dislike it I would have to have put the Black Album on that list. And perhaps Shout at the Devil to cover the catchy hair metal side. If Pantera counts then Master of Puppets would have been my choice instead.
@@Veaseify I don't necessarily disagree with Pete's picks, as I said, I'm just surprised at him including AC/DC as Metal. I would include the first Montrose album.
Great albums. I so happy for Melissa in this list
Gotta have Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" from 1983 on this list. It was the first heavy metal album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It opened the door for a lot of bands in the genre.

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Accept - Balls to the Wall
Krokus - Headhunter

It's just terrible that one of the greatest metal albums of all time is forever ruined, but fortunately people can always find the original mix on RUclips. \m/ \m/
Dio could take up 3/10th of this list with Rising, Holy Diver and Heaven & Hell. Great memories on your other choices.

It pained me to leave off Aerosmith and I figured my Zep and Sab albums were close enough for Rush (for beginners anyway)

Megadeth - "Rust In Peace
Overkill - "Taking Over"
Rainbow - "Rising"

------------> About my list.. ----------> I put a few that some may say isn't metal..
You really like Opeth's Blackwater Park? epic!

So many non Metal albums. Hard Rock is not Metal
But yes AC/DC is a hard rock band.
the guitar runs in Thunderstruck are pretty metal I would say but overall AC/DC is not a metal band to me.
Just remember, at the time, Journey was considered hard rock. So, by comparison, AC/DC was considered Heavy Metal. Also, Lemmy always said Motorhead was a Rock and Roll band. So ....?
ACDC plays heavy blues.

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Scorpions - Blackout
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Accept - Balls to the Wall
It’s amazing how so many people don’t listen to the content creators thesis/disclaimer : this episode is about classic heavy metal and yet people are listing Metallica and Megadeth. Pete clearly said thrash would be a different episode.
Yup
@@SO-ym3zs Oh yea, no doubt Pantera should not be in the list.
@@neuroisis85 Also, if only traditional heavy metal is allowed, why not include Sabaton? A token representative of the current state of the genre.
@@LuisNunes-ps4sl Well Sabaton is a Power Metal band, which is a subgenre. Now he could’ve picked something like Eternal Champion or Riot City, or any of the other bands being lumped together as the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal. Since those bands sole purpose is to play Metal in the 70’s/early 80’s vein before the subgenres.
Cool list! I guess if someone doesn’t like metal after that then it wasn’t meant to be.
For me, at a young age being exposed to heavy rock in the late 70s up until seeking out more extreme stuff into 1990, my first discoveries that made a impact were:
Led Zeppelin- II
Scorpions- Love at First Sting
Judas Priest- Screaming for

Motley Crue- Shout at the Devil
Iron Maiden- Piece of Mind
Metallica- And Justice for All
Slayer- South of Heaven
Death- Spiritual Healing

Gonna add my choices here:
Ride The Lightning - Metallica
Vulgar Display of Power - Pantera
Van Halen I - Van Halen (this is on the line)
Metal Health - Quiet Riot
Peace Sells (But Who's buying?) - Megadeth
British Steel - Judas Priest
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Slipknot - Slipknot
Paranoid - Black Sabbath
My list is quite different
1. Battle Beast - Circus of Doom
2. Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
3. Helloween - Master of The Rings
4. Europe - The Final Countdown
5. Stratovarius - Visions
6. Bonjovi - Slippery When Wet
7. Scorpions - Black Out
8. Whitesnake - 1987
9. Def Leppard - Hysteria
10. Alice Cooper - Trash

Scorpions - Love at First Sting
Accept - Metal Heart
Helloween - Master of The Rings
Judas Priest - British Steel
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Metallica - Metallica (Black)
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond

10 - "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera
Black Sabbath IV, Powerslave, Master of the Puppets, Rainbow Rising, Tokyo Tapes, Painkillers, Heaven & Hell, Diary of a Mad Man, Systematic Chaos and Holy Diver.
I still have the Tokyo Tapes vinyl I purchased at Tower Records in 1980 and it still gets quite a bit of play!

AC/DC was never considered a metal band. Scorpions weren't until Rock you like a Hurricane hit, and that was completely media driven.
@@johncampbell3390 "Reviewing the album for Rolling Stone in 1980, David Fricke regarded it as 'not only the best of AC/DC's six American albums', but also 'the apex of heavy-metal art: the first LP since Led Zeppelin II that captures all the blood, sweat and arrogance of the genre.' Red Starr of Smash Hits was more critical, saying he found the songs indistinguishable from one another and marred by hypermasculine fantasies, rock music stock phrases, garish guitar, and dull rhythms, on 'yet another triumph for lowest common denominator headbanging-the new thoroughly predictable, thoroughly dreadful AC/DC album', and gave Back in Black a score of 3 out of 10."

Motorhead - Ace of Spades or Overkill.
Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

Anthrax - Among The Living
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
AC/DC is decent, but not necessarily a metal band, even the band calls itself rock and roll.

Cool, I have the number of the beast on cassette
Thanks Pete for doing this series. I love progressive rock, jazz, and fusion but have always stayed away from heavy metal and progressive metal. It took me a long time to get into Deep Purple and early Rush.
However, I know there is music to appreciate that I haven't listened to or given a chance. I remember not liking King Crimson "Starless and Bible Black" but I would keep returning to the album every so often. Then one day the veil was lifted and suddenly I understood and connected with the music.
So thanks for doing the "starter packs" and providing a direction for people looking to explore further.
