  • Judas Priest : Invincible Shield : Album Review :
In the realm of heavy metal, few bands have carved out a legacy as enduring and influential as Judas Priest. As a lifelong fan and follower of Judas Priest, having amassed their complete discography and witnessed their evolution from the “Sad Wings of Destiny” era to the present, I approached “Invincible Shield” with a mix of anticipation and reverence. My verdict? This album is a monumental achievement that stands as the pinnacle of Judas Priest’s illustrious career.
“Invincible Shield” is, in my opinion, quite possibly the best Judas Priest album ever released. Phil Aston

Hell, this album is truly remarkable. Firepower was great, still Invicible Shield is yet another level. Not one weakness. Feels like they have taken influences from their best songs/styles/albums through the years, added some new ideas and the result is a masterpiece. The tempo, energy, riffs, bass and drums, everything. Truly 16:23 an overwhelming experience of metal joy!!!

It’s an absolutely phenomenal album. All killer, no filler in my opinion. I’m legitimately shocked how anthemic, bold and progressive it is. As excellent as Firepower is, I believe they hit the bullseye dead on for the first time since Painkiller.

I couldn't agree more and Firepower comes in at a close second . I have Priests entire catalogue on vinyl and cd , IMO the last 2 albums are absolute bangers . Great to see Priest and Saxon in 2024 still firing on all eight cylinders . Cheers once again Phil. 😉

I'm 45 and have just started listening to Judas Priest. I'm just blown away by how well every song/track is written and so well-combined. I haven't skipped one track through any of their albums, thinking it's too slow or not interesting. I'm very impressed with how well they pull each song together and keep you wanting more.

I couldn't agree more. I tend to be pretty jaded towards new albums from bands I've followed since the 80s (although I always buy them). But this album has filled me with such joy! I'm obsessed with it. I don't even know how they've managed it, but they have. I'm 16 again.

I got the CD and I'm experiencing very similar feelings towards the album. I also got the "Turbo" vibes at the beginning of Panic Attack. Also got some strong "Leather Rebel" vibes with As God is my Witness. After 5 times listening to the album in it's entirety I can say this is a monster. Monumental kind of stuff.
    Bravo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻

I couldn't agree more. When I first heard the whole album I immediately rated it #1 out of their whole discography. It is an amazing album. And by the way, I saw a very young JP open for Zeppelin in Day on the Green in 1977 at age 14! Nobody knew who Judas Priest was then! And to think they put out an album like this in 2024 when I am 60???

I couldn’t agree more! It could be the very best ever, the weak songs DO NOT feel like filler material unlike almost all the legendary albums. I’m surprised that lots of folks are afraid to express that this one could be better than Painkiller, Screaming… or others. Great review!

I’ve listened through several times already and my mind is still processing this incredible greatness. Halford continues to amaze with his vocals and there really are no words to adequately describe Richie Faulkner and what he’s brought to JP. 👏 A true metal god!
The band lineup reads more like a hospital’s triage list. They shouldn’t be getting better, but somehow they are. This literally defies all nature!
I can remember people back in the 80’s joking about how they’re gonna sound when they get old. 😂
    Well! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the honest review! It's even better than Firepower! The production and sound is just perfect! It's a good mixture of different eras of Priest! Rob's voice is just incredible for a man in his mid 70's! Rob being sober has helped his voice remain strong for sure! Even the bonus tracks are great songs! I love everything about this record! I have bought every Judas Priest fan since 1980. My absolute favorite band. They continue to defy Father Time. Not only are they beating the odds they have released a steady run of great albums. Faulkner brought something to the band. They seem so energized. While younger metal bands can’t give us a descent album and rely on their past music Priest gives us amazing new albums.Redeemer of souls and Firepower and now invincible shield! Incredible. I haven’t missed KK at all.I’m a huge Richie Faulkner fan. Glenn is my all time fav Guitarist and Richie is a close second. Firepower and now Invincible Shield honest to god are in my top five only behind Screaming for Vengeance,Defenders,Hell Bent for Leather! Priest Rules. Always has always will!

I've never claimed that any of the other albums were my favorites when they were just released. I've only ever said that about Invincible Shield. It's like they took all the little things that I've loved the most about the band over the years, and made the ultimate Judas Priest album. I'm almost 47, I've been a fan since I was 14, and I can't believe I'm having the priviledge in 2024 of listening to this absolute masterpiece!

I'm so glad I took the time to watch some reviews of this album.
I inherently agree...it is the best studio album by Judas Priest. I find it difficult to say.
I think it is due to 3 major factors:
1: Ritchie has been accepted and adapted to being an official member of Judas Priest.
    2. Glen has accepted his condition and has UNLEASHED again. The chemistry between he and The Falcon has become a new metal on the element chart....remarkable.
    3. Outside of the Covid farce and Ritchie's conversion to the Hellion, they've been on the road, working.
    The PRIEST IS BACK!!

You are very close to my thoughts. I find it hard to really rank in order.... just in bundles of albums.
My favorites have always been: tied for #1: Sad Wings, Stained Class, Firepower, British Steel, Screaming / Defenders.... then in the #2 bundle: Painkiller, Killing Machine, Sin After Sin, Redeemer, Angel, Point of Entry..... then the next bundle, Rocka Rolla, Turbo, Ram It Down, Nostradamus... and then a distant last ... the 2 ripper albums.
This album instally slotted in with that #1 bundle of favorites.... almost from the first listen. It is quite incredible that Rob/Glenn and now Ritchie can write songs this strong so far into the band's existence.
This may end up being my favorite album of 2024.

I'm so happy to hear when musicians are doing reviews. I play guitar myself and absolutely love this album. The guitar playing is outstanding, and also the singing, drumming, bass playing. It's unbelievably great considering the average age of the members. Maybe Painkiller is my favourite. Glenn Tipton must have worked hard on the guitar. The lead work on painkiller title track is immense, it would take me weeks to nail that solo if I ever make it.
Ritchie is using an wizard amp on this album. I saw Marshall silver jubilee in the studio also but I'm not sure if it's used on the record. And Glenn is using an Engl Invader. Love Engl!

I agree it's a great album. Although I think Richie Faulkner does all of the guitar, so my only wish would have been that they gave Andy Sneap some input on the playing, to give a bit more variety (as there always was with Tipton and Downing) as he's a great player.

Agreed. The variety of KK's sound is missing. I find it hard to believe that Glenn played very much on this record, although I'm sure he contributed to the writing.

Hi Phil your vid came up on my feed what a fantastic review. A fan since 85 I saw them a good a few years ago in Dublin for the first time. I will never forget Painkiller live, me and my mates jaw dropped when we heard it live, probably the best metal song ive heard live ever. But man Panic Attack is amazing, I have not bought the album yet but looking forward to it, I will be seeing them with Saxon who released another amazing album with Uriah Heep in Dublin next friday, cant wait and feel like a kid again, Im now 54. Hail the metal gods and the metal god and the mighty Saxon...🤘

I have the Target Exclusive version of 'Invincible Shield' and while I think "Giants in the Sky" closes the album better, I'm glad to have the bonus tracks. Before the release, I only heard two tracks from the album. I wasn't a fan of "Panic Attack", but I loved "Crown of Horns"! I went into the album with no expectations and was really impressed overall!

The first metal band to release albums 50 years apart, and what a way to do it! Can't wait to see the upcoming Wembley show. Last time I saw them was at Brixton and that was exceptionally good. Really enjoyed your review. I went for the cd, then caved in and got the purple vinyl edition. Favourite albums are (in no particular order) Stained Class, Screaming For Vengeance, Angel of Retribution, Defenders of the Faith...wait...I love 'em all, even Rocka Rolla and the Ripper Owens ones. Every album has something worth discovering.

It takes me at least eight or ten listens over several weeks before I can really tell how much I'm going to listen to an album over time, and sometimes the best music on an album doesn't give up its secrets on the first few listens, but eventually becomes a favorite. Having said that, the skill and passion these guys are still bringing to the game after all these years is amazing, and the production quality of this album is also great. My favorite song at the moment is Trial by Fire. The opening reminds me a little of Judas Rising from Angel of Retribution, and Rob's voice and diction is at the top of his game.
Also, Phil, I'm with you about really liking Nostradamus. I know some people are down on it, and I think that's because there's a lot of short bridge songs to go along with the concept album, but if you were to just put together the best songs, you'd realize you've got some incredible music on it.

I agree, mate.👍 I think that if you take 14 of Nostradamus' best songs, and that is including a couple of its interludes, you would have a single album of brilliance. I think most of Disc 1 is excellent. Put that with 'Visions" "Future of Mankind" and the title track from disc 2 together and you've got a wonderful album. Symphonic and Cinematic.
"Revelations", "Death", "Persecution" "Conquest". "Nostradamus'. Amazing Songs!

    • @MrLilwallace
      @MrLilwallace 5 месяцев назад

@@kylereece1979 Well said. If the album has any flaw, it's that they were too indulgent with the shorter pieces, as well as a couple of more plodding longer songs, and probably should have just trimmed those and released it in a special "director's cut." If they'd done that, I think fans would have a completely different opinion of the album.

Another great heartfelt review Phil. I concur about the creaking bones, i'm 60 next month and was outside picking up leaves a few days ago, and two hours later I was done. Couldn't move!... Haha 😆😆........So a bit of Metal therapy was required, so I took a Painkiller (see what I did there!) and had a listen to the new JP album. And yeah, it kind of harks back to the 'Ram It Down/Painkiller' period. I first saw the boys on the 'Point Of Entry' tour back in '81 and I'm going to see them again next Sunday in Bournemouth. It will be the 6th time I've seen them. Keep the great reviews coming Phil 👍

Great review brother. I haven't been a huge Priest fan as I have been with Maiden, Metallica and Tool but I preordered this album after hearing some of the singles on RUclips the day they were released. Before I listened to this last night my favorite album from JP was the 1987 live album and Defenders of the Faith. Hearing this Friday night brought some serious chills to my body. It is unbelievable in every aspect from Rob's voice , to the punch of the vinyl, guitar riffs and the lyrics. It is my favorite JP now and It will definitely be the best metal album of 2024. It will likely go down in history as one of the best metal albums period.

So you liked this album then Phil. I have followed Priest since the very early 80's and to be honest I never thought they had this still in them. How wrong I was! This album is bloody marvellous.
FYI I also have a lot of time for Turbo, I remember headbanging to Turbo Lover in Cardiff Bogiez years ago. As for my faves... Screaming for Vengeance, Point of Entry and Defenders of the Faith. But in my humble opinion they haven't done a bad album all have redeeming qualities.
Thanks for the video Phil. And a big thumbs up to the Priest.

this is definitely my favourite album of theirs since screaming for vengeance and i can't even say that screaming for vengeance and sad wings of destiny are better musically, i just like them more because they were my introduction. priest have released an album 50 years after their first where i would without any doubt point anyone who wants to get into priest directly to this album. senjutsu was my introduction to iron maiden when i was 18 and i love it to death still. i know that this album is gonna do the same for future priest fans!

So glad that I'm not the only one going absolutely nuts with this one! I have played this ten times already. Everything done just a bit better than on Firepower. And I really liked that one too. This one is just tighter, more consistent and the songs are just fillled with great classic riffs and absolute solo fireworks. It's a Faulkner show but all of them get to shine here. I don't think that I could put out as bold a statement with this one. That it's the best but it certainly is on par with some of those classic ones. And so far I like all the tracks here. Not a single filler even when you include the bonus tracks.

The first album i bought from Priest was Stained Class . I was 15 years old , and man did that album spin on my turntable for a loooong time! After that i got hold of Sad Wings of Destiny , and thouse two albums are my all time favourites by Priest . Remember back in 86 we had to drive for 5 hours too se Priest here in Norway on the Turbo tour ! Felt like they was trying more and more to be accepted for the american market? Just like Saxon did about the time Crusader was released . BUT this Invincible Shield is flying the flag of true true heavy metal . Really love it , and is a real masterpiece!!!!🤩

I certainly can understand the ‘growing up with heavy metal’ comment. I, too, can find it predictable having listened to it for decades and these days go for something more unorthodox such as progressive metal.
I listened to this album twice in one sitting and was amazed how good it sounded. It still needs to bed itself in so I can’t say at this point if it’s their best album but it’s definitely up there.

Is This the Best Judas Priest Album So Far? Let me know what you think! Phil - No, it's not the best, but it is really good ! I'm not naive and I don't fall for Rob's voice aging like wine. There's a lot of modern technology behind it, like pitch correction, auto tune (anyway, not a vocal disaster like Ozzy Patient Number 9), but still, the album is damned great. Richie is a real refreshment to the band.

    • @LarryFleetwood8675

I agree, do quite like it too but think it's far from being their best it is however for me their best since Angel of Retribution. They have way too many brilliant albums from the '70s and '80s that are classics for good reasons, this comes nowhere near the best of those it's much too samey sounding overall despite the seemingly many twists and turns it takes. Or maybe it's just that modern loud production sound, that I've never been a fan of but it also has a frantic sonic pace that dominates most of the album with very few quiet passages. Honestly, I miss the overall feel of both Downing and Tipton here. Not as one-dimensional as Painkiller this new album blows it to bits, still there's sadly too many songs that don't totally grab my interest. Best songs right now; Gates of Hell, Crown of Horns, Giants in the Sky, Fight of Your Life and Vicious Circle two of those are bonus tracks.

I absolutely agree with you Phil. Invincible Shield (Deluxe Edition) is Priest’s best album ever. I’d have to say that this one, Firepower, and Painkiller are their three best albums. Redeemer of Souls(Deluxe Edition) would come in at number four and Angel of Retribution number five. Crazy that Priest keeps getting better the older they get. But so does Saxon. Check out Hell, Fire, and Damnation. Cheers!

I did stream the entire work.
This is my favorite Priest album now.
Exciting, unrelenting songs that are genuinely 50 years in the making.
I have concert tickets to this tour in America; a great challenge for a veteran band is the setlist.
They could perform this album. But you know there will be young people attending their first Priest show.
