  • The Canon XC-10 XC-15 looks cool. But how good is it? Is it really a cinema camera? How does it compare with a Canon C100 ii. It looks like a bridge camera, so how does it compare with other 1" sensor bridge cameras like the Sony RX10iv or Lumix ZS2500 or camcorders like Sony AX700, Z90V or AX100 or Canon Vixia G60 and G70 or other 1" sensor cameras like the Sony RX100vii or Lumix LX10 or even a Samsung NX mini? This camera review video hopefully will clear up some of those questions. Is it good for vlogging? Is it cinematic? Does it shoot 4K? How easy is it to use? Find out all this and more in this camera review video that will hopefully tickle your photography hobby interests.

    I had to use those awful Canon XC-10 cameras while working in a television studio years ago, and I wanted to throw them all through a window by the time I was done with them. Focus was terrible and ruined so many different news stories. This video brought back a seething rage I hadn't felt in a while. 😂

      You do not need autofocus in a TV studio, it's a controlled environment, I would only use autofocus filming sports, weddings, documentaries, animal videos, in an uncontrolled environment. 😉

    My friend sold his XC15 but I got to see a lot of footage and use it myself. Strange camera - lots of potential, but a just weird camera overall. I agree with my friend - if they set this up for interchangeable lenses it would have been a good value. You are right - autofocus sucks and manual focus is not very responsive. It's a camera you want to like, but you just can't. Your comments of Canon are so right on - maybe I've been foolishly loyal but I really like the IQ overall, but Canon always throws you a partial bone on features and specs- never complete. Thanks for giving a nod to my beloved C100. You're always very practical and pragmatic in your reviews Markus!!

      I had both the XC10 and the XC15, and like you, I really wanted to like them, but found myself unable to do so. I found myself confronted by several major problems. Namely, the MXF wrapper that can't be readily imported into most NLE software packages without special software, the need for expensive CFast cards and a special reader and last, but not least, the limited range of focal lengths.
      I also found images produced by the camera were fairly soft and even in 4K, not that much better than what an average consumer camcorder could produce.
      For me, the major attraction of the camera was the viewfinder loupe, which would provide access to a huge and bright viewfinder. But this made the camera clunky to operate, and in my case, the mechanism that allowed the LCD display to articulate was loose and couldn't be fixed, so it tended to not stay in place when needed and flop around a lot.

    • @MarkusPix
      @MarkusPix  7 месяцев назад +4

      Also, the fastest way to change f-stop, ISO and SS is touch screen on this camera and yiou can't do that with the loupe attached. Another genius move by Canon 😜

    I used to use one of these several years ago. It wasn't a bad little camera. The thing I hated about it (and most 4k cameras if you shoot uncompressed) was the file size. It was stupidly huge. I still to this day prefer the file quality and size of the Canon C100MkII. It's a shame that it's a bit bulky to deal with. But for the line of work that I do, I love it. I need to get a couple of more models as a backup just in case. But this little mini camera isn't too bad. I used to use this camera when I would need to do green screen work and the subject wasn't moving much. It was a good deal for me at the time with the work I was doing. But, yeah, all of your issues you brought up are definitely valid. It's a cool camera and I kinda wish I still had it..just for keeps :)

    IIRC, 2015 was right at the height of TV stations switching video production to individual field run-and-gun reporters without photographers or audio people. Stations didn't want to compromise on quality and were aware of the advantages of 4k resolution allowing reframing for poorly composed shots. This camera was probably aimed directly at these stations, it's the old "nobody gets fired for buying IBM" syndrome.

    If Markus is complaining about image sharpness then you KNOW the image isn't sharp enough. Honestly it's reminding me of my t3i and t4i in terms of image quality. Definitely a nice image but I got my t3i on craigslist a few years ago for $250 and it came with both kit lenses and a bag. I could run a two camera shoot with a few extra lenses for the price of just the XC-10, and if you put some nice glass on those camera bodies you can get some incredible looking footage.
    In my opinion, the benefits of 1080 still outweigh 4k simply in terms of file size. Shooting these large formats requires you to have fast drives in your computer, and a faster internet connection when you want to share the video with a client or publish it on youtube. Even if you shoot in 4k, downscaling to 1440 or 1080 for your final output will give you a better image, and the file size will literally be less than half. Less bandwidth > More pixels

    • @matthewsheppard7050
      @matthewsheppard7050 7 месяцев назад

      The Canon t3i is a great camera. The one thing that it lacks is the ability to shoot for hours at a time without stopping and imo it has terrible stabilization and autofocus but it’s still capable of some really great film.

    I had been using Canon cameras since 2008 and when this one came out, I was interested in it, at first anyway. At the time I wanted a camera with good video quality. I was using a Canon HF G30 camcorder and I liked that camcorders ergonomics, useability and long zoom range, but I never liked it's soft video quality, especially at wide angles, so I wanted a camera that could give me better video quality. This camera wasn't it.
    I didn't like the soft footage it has as well as the auto focus not being good. I also needed a longer zoom range than this has and a flip out screen so I could see myself when I wanted to talk in front of the camera, although I had an Atomos Ninja 2 and could have used it if the video quality and focus were good.
    I ended up getting a Panasonic GH4 instead, and while it doesn't have good auto focus, I liked its video quality a lot more and that I could change lenses and take both videos and photos with it. I haven't looked back since and still use Panasonic cameras today.

They said "We record in 4K but output in 1080 because this allows us to zoom and crop. To output in 4K, we would need to record in 8k (or 6k) which then slows the editing process down. Maybe in the future we can increase the resolution." are they right ?

    I am very happy with this camera. It depends on what tasks you are using the camera for. 7 years ago, it was advertised as a video camera for journalists, I think it is. For my RUclips channel and for home video, this camera is very convenient and has excellent characteristics. In this video, they did not report a very important characteristic - video color subsampling, this camera has 4:2:2. It is quite convenient to adjust the aperture, shutter speed and other parameters, the author of the video did not figure out the settings, there is a good video on RUclips on this topic, look and find it. The work of focusing suits me. The author says that the camera is heavy. What does it compare with? Other cameras that have similar characteristics weigh the same, but are larger in size. The truth is that with the same capabilities, this camera is very compact, it gives many advantages, for example, I was able to use a smaller steadicam, but it costs less. The author does not like that there are few ND filters, but for the 600-700 dollars that this camera costs now, you HAVE an ND filter! Considering the price of the camera today, this is an excellent camera, one of the best for an experienced amateur.

    I still find it amazing how great your videos look with a pocket camera, when all these other RUclipsrs act like you need a RED camera to shoot RUclips content. Anyway I enjoy all your content. I might have to get me a LUMIX LX10! The RX100vii is a little expensive for me.

      Those others have self worth issues. They are basically saying "look, I have a RED camera and you don't, so I'm better than you because I am a real filmmaker and you're not nyah nyah." It's hilarious. Yeah what Hollywood movie did they make? 😂😅😄

    I'll tell you why they always just miss in one area. We are their beta test for everything. And if they made the "check all the boxes" camera, they wouldn't have a market to go to. They'd already be there and can't make any more money. This is why I refuse to be an early adopter of any camera line's first entry. Thanks for taking one for the team.

    I never understood who these cameras were for. If they had interchangeable lenses, they could at least be somewhat “pocketable” (like Blackmagic’s original vision for a “pocket cinema camera,” before they started looking like an oxymoron).

    Its a Canon, they took a sledgehammer to it and picked up whatever remained and said, "We gonna fix this and whatever works at the end of the day is whats gonna ship"
    Turns out, not a lot worked afterwards, oh well, Panasonic on the other hand, stuff their cameras with so much features its mind boggling, their digicams from early 2000s have video recording, I think they are one of the first digicam manufacturers that let you record 480, yeah I know but for 2003 thats IMPRESSIVE, in a digicam with a flip outscreen!

    I actually love the XC10! I use them for my little studio and it works great since I have a ton of light, I have a bunch of those silly expensive CFast 2.0 cards from friends that were throwing them out, and I set it in MF. Sure, they're old and not that capable, but I have a quad capture card for multiple video streams for live streaming, and they are great on these table-edge stands. As silly as this sounds based on your review, 🤞I REALLY hope I win this giveaway! I hope people are deterred from registering 🙃.

  • @Tore_Lund
    @Tore_Lund 7 месяцев назад

    It is a nice camera with several quirks, but the color reproduction is excellent. 4K bitrate is 305Mb/s to a CFast 2.0 card. You can only record 2K on a SD card at 50Mb/s. It is sharper outside in daylight.

    When it came out, the company I worked at were looking at one for remote broadcasts on a budget (both size wise and money.)
    On paper they looked great. Decent image, could output a decent image to HDMI. Lens was okay and most important, we could fit like 4 or 5 into a pelican case.
    But we stumbled upon the same issues when renting one. Too bad really.

      @@shaananwalsh7513 I see I took honest to equate to fair for which as an XC-15 owner I found Markus’s review to be lacking. It’s not a perfect camera but at a refurbished price point of $600 it’s hard to beat if you’re looking for a camera that won’t stop recording after 30 mins.

      I bought this camera when I was on a tight budget but desperate for a B cam. My honest review is that the worst part about the camera is the lens. The appeture is fine when you don't zoom in but it gets bad the farther in you zoom. That said it takes great shots of nature when there is plenty of light. It is not a selfie camera and was never intended to be. It won't stop recording after 20 mins. It does have built in ND filters, zebras, a fan, c-log, and fantastic image stabilization. That alone was not explored, in this review and it is one of the strongest features in this camera.@@shaananwalsh7513

    2 Things (if you have the time):
    1). I know you rave about the Lumix G7, but I could not find anything about the G85 in your video archives using YT's search feature. I've been shooting with a G85 for about 3 years and I would like to know your thoughts on it. Does such a video exist?
    2). Employing your advice on flat lighting, I love the look, except for the catch lights. I use 2x Godox 37" Octaboxes set parallel to one another and get unflattering double catchlights in each eye. I shoot mainly headshots where the catchlight is prominent. Do you have a video addressing this, or any advice on how to get flattering catchlights when using flat lighting? I place the Octaboxes parallel to and facing one another (with grids) in order to feather the light and keep it off of the backdrop. Distance from light to subject and subject to backdrop is 3'.
    Thanks, again!

    Would this be an ok camera or budget camera to start with for just basic cinematography? With just basic stills shots, maybe a zoom out here and there? Also does this camera have an ok depth of field that at least focus in on the subject but the background is still somewhat blurry? Only reason I’m asking is because this camera on eBay and other sites is really cheap and I’m really just trying to start out with cinematography and get use to the basic and I love the ergonomic of this camera than how dslr look(really like camcorder look than dslr).
