Great video I am looking at buying my first camcorder for outside videos so will need stabilised video and Mic socket I was thinking of buying a camara but after watching this I changed my mind thanks for sharing this information
@MarkusPix RUclips recommended me this channel and i'm so glad as its the best channel i've found in a long time. I'll always be a Video camera/Camcorder person over a DSLR person and actually a couple of those $600 camcorders i'd gladly use on Pro shoots or if i'm on a BLM and don't have to worry if cops smash up my camera as its pretty cheap. Any way keep up the great work.
I had a camcorder when I was like 14 and NO ONE in my family was taking ANY videos/photos, of our family life, except me and that lil camcorder, and now my family's saying 'Oh its So good you took these videos when we were all small!!!' Such a good piece of tech.
Gives me a throwback feel, like 2006-2009. It works in his favour; as he’ll stand out of the ‘conventional’ crowd of content creators. It’s kinda charming & he seem to have a truckload of knowledge in contrast to younger tech reviewers. 👍 Also best audio I’ve heard in recent months. Wonder what boom mic he’s using 🤔

This might just be the best review video on all of RUclips. Full stop, no qualifiers. If you are shopping for a new camcorder, what could possibly be better or more insightful than seeing almost EVERY mass-market option on the same table, with live demos of the video and audio quality to make a judgement for yourself. I just launched a new RUclips channel this week, and I picked the Sony HDR-CX405 based on the results of your sample video here! Thanks so much for doing this video -- must have been a lot of time and work, but your content here is the best of its kind currently on all of RUclips! To 50K subs and beyond!
I have spent just over 25 years as a commercial and portrait photographer and videographer, and I agree with you that even those $30 Chinese camcorders represent a potential level of fun that makes me feel like I'm back in my highschool video journalism class with unlimited life experiences and creative freedom ahead of me. That might not sound so amazing to anyone half our age, arguably. My teenagers have surrendered back to me most of the Vivitars, Polaroids, Cheapo Chinese units and the $150 -$300 Sony and Panasonic camcorders I've given them over the years. Gotta love it that they not only share my creative passion and interests, but rather than destroy their old Christmas and Birthday gifts they always end up re-gifting them back to me every other year when mom declares it's Spring Cleaning and Charitable Donation week. Albeit these little wonder boxes are not all created equal, it's quite liberating and inspiring to begin storyboarding a new conceptual project knowing that there are 8-10 extra perspectives I can employ beyond my everyday 2-3 dslr setup. They are super compact so they can be stuck in just about any tiny vantage point or even props to open up new ways for the audience to visually participate in the stories and events we shoot. I use them for not only personal projects but even shooting BTS and other alt-angle shots for clients and colabs. Like you pointed out, the greatest common factor across the entire product range is that these things are built specifically for shooting video so battery life, using AC power outlets rather than batteries, image stabilization, auto functionality, otg focusing, compact size/weight and even audio quality are in line with the dedicated purpose of their design. Not to mention that if I drop a $50 Vivitar off a window cleaning scaffold from six stories (above a thankfully empty sidewalk), it's not the kind of loss to break the bank or ruin the afternoon. Even better, the couple I've dropped while recording actually had usable footage still on the SD card of the initial footage and the fall, too. It is very exciting to have a swath of accentuating clips and perspectives during post production. When I saw the video title and the assortment of consumer camcorders, I have to admit I actually got a little excited that someone actually invested the time and resources to procure all these cams and do a basic but proper review of all of them at once. I obviously enjoy these the way you do, but even beyond just "nerding out" and comparing the features this video was a great idea that I'm sure lots of different content creators and craftsmen alike will find the info helpful. I'm glad I found your channel this way as this is so much more lighthearted and cool overall than the typical way we find other industry related channels on RUclips. I'm subbed now, so I'll see you around. Cheers, bro!
@The Collective Consciousness You do not even need 1200 for a camcorder, as the dude has shown in the video, 600 alone gets you a whole lot of features you will never use. Find one of those old full size VHS camcorders from the 1980's. I've seen the at garage sales for $20.00+/-. Not yet antiques, lots still around, they're in the 'junk' category right now not yet transitioned to collectable. The analogue system, the limited resolution and other primitive technology give a quaint mood. I one point I even had a U-Matic 3/4" player recorder with a huge, heavy camera and 'security cam' resolution. Made some interesting videos that still kept their antiquated, almost spooky, quality when transferred to my Apple computer. Someone, more creative than me, will eventually make something interesting with that obsolete equipment.

I took a '70s era camera hooked to a portable U-matic with mini cassette and did some video in and around an old empty house on a cloudy November day. Markus, thank you so much for your passionate, informative reviews. My girlfriend is a filmmaker that has recently reignited her passion for videography and filmmaking after some traumatic life events and your enthusiasm and energy are inspiring and have helped her get back to the work that she loves. Thank you!
Awesome to see a video without affiliate links or pushing all the latest gear. It's also nice to see older $1k type priced name brand cameras and their eBay prices, when i search them on b&h it just shows the current versions for 1200 bucks or whatever. My fav is that little silver Sony that looks like the classic JVC DV Cam that they used in Stargate back when it was new tech.
Who watches old videos of camera comparisons? I DO! Thank you so very much for this. I continue to respect your experience and knowledge. It filters out the crap from the useful and demonstrates the great and possible.
The image stabilization on the Sony & Panasonic camcorders worked really well. Great features, image quality, and easy to use. I would be interested to see a $600 camcorder vs $600 DSLR for video quality comparison if possible ?
It isn't so much the DSLR itself, it's the bit of glass attached that determines the quality of the recorded image, combined with the effectiveness of any image stabilisation built-in to the lens.
Well DSLR would probably beat it in raw video quality (if you don't factor in lens price lol)... However with camcorders in that price range you trade some quality that probably no one will notice anyway for a huge improvement in ergonomics... I happen to have a vxf11, a bit beefed up "pro" version, and I find myself using it more and more... basically for any job that doesn't absolutely require "film look" or super high level of quality... If you're doing vlogging or run-n-gun stuff, a good camcorder is invariably better choice for the money.
I have a Sony a6400 and an AX53 - the stuff that comes out of the AX53 is dreamy and movie-like, the a6400 is crisp and quality. I'd take the AX53 footage every single time.
I just discovered your videos and they put such a smile on my face. Something a bit unique about my personality is that I am really one to create and macgyver things. I had an epiphany almost 7 years ago that I wanted to be a filmmaker and since then I have been a single mom doing odd jobs while progressing through purchasing the equipment to finally stop with childcare, cooking, cleaning, sewing, MLM, etc, finally done with all of those things for others and about starting my film business now. It's a dream come true and I am loving seeing all you guys on youtube that I have learned from being such engineers yourselves, macgyvering solutions and getting creative not only with with art but with methods. I LOVE it. :) Filmmakers are the coolest people! ... but in my small town I am the only one so I didn't even know it! :P Seeing your videos makes me feel like I am so *at home* with this career choice, after a life of ADHD and career boredom. Thank you so much for generously sharing, you are so clever and fun to watch :)
Usually, I avoid video's that state EPIC...but EPIC advice this was. I like this guy, true to the point! I used to take video with a camcorder with tape and I thoroughly enjoyed it (having to edit via dvd recorder which was a ballache but worthwhile, eventually). Now everything is digital it's not the same! I recently took a video with my phone and had to keep pressing pause to continue the experience I was having without the video cutting out, made me wish I had a video camera again, hence why I am here! Now I am on the hunt to capture memories via motion again! With so many options out there this was perfect advice, especially on a budget. I did laugh though, he has had the same haircut for the past 10 years haha. Nice one!
"I love camcorders... and the thing about camcorders is they're made for idiots. You don't even need to know where the on button is..." - QUALITY review.
I've enjoyed watching this videos. It's better than a commercialized tv series or tv show. I think we're kind of freak or weird having this passion of making video stuff. Its the thing that made us happy.
One of the things that is getting me through the 'vid is planning to travel with the mindset of a 90s camcorder dad......thank you so much. I don't want anything fancy, just the digital equivalent of an old 90s camcorder.
One thing one often finds on camcorders which is costly to find on digital cameras is powerful optical zoom; which may be of importance for some uses; you mentioned it and showed an indoor zoom, it often is the best solution for long shots.
Great video. Camcorders are so under appreciated. I remember when I first started out I was using a camcorder with a giant vhs tape inside and no lcd screen of any kind. I took that thing everywhere with me. I was vlogging in the early 90's when vlogging wasnt even a thing yet. That X900 was very impressive. You are very generous for giving away those camers.
Hey just caught this camcorder review. This is one of the best reviews I've seen on youtube. Never boring & great information too. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
I've been trying to look for old digital cameras at home we used more than 10 years ago. I've been toying around with the idea of making a "retro" style video without it looking too distractingly-cheap. This made me start looking again! China camcorders... changing colors... nope. I already have enough trouble with *manually* white balanced clips as it is. :) And I'm not sure if I'm lucky for being a Panasonic shooter and having some of the in-camera features that some modern DSLRs still don't have, in a camera almost 5 years since release. I still use an old Sony Camcorder (2007, zoom mic, 5.1 surround, flippy screen, high zoom) for some shots, though sadly I am limited by 1 battery so it's not an all-day option for me.
You would be proud of me. After watching you for a few years talking about camera's and camcorders I finally picked one that suits my needs. It's the Sony HDR CX405. YESSSSSS! and I got it for about $120 with extra batteries, a carrying case and all the cables. Why am I so excited? Because this is the first camcorder I ever bought. Didn't know whether to buy a camera or a camcorder, but you convinced me to buy a camcorder because it's especially made to take videos and that's what I want to do. I'm ready to start filming my mini Puppet Music video movie. And then it's on to the next adventure. Woo Hoo!!! This is more exciting than winning a camera from you. lol Just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and insight to buying a camcorder that suits my needs and one I could afford. All I need is to find a beautiful woman like Cara to start taking some great videos and pictures. WOW I'M SO EXCITED!!!
This was an amazing breakdown! I have no idea why I haven’t found your channel before now. Thank you for this as I’m looking to change soon. Really liking that Sony Ax33!
I was looking for a video camera today that would work with “sling studio” and I have GOT to say this is BY FAR the FASTEST most AMAZING breakdown of cameras I have EVER run across. In most normal comparison videos it’s like “why I upgraded from ‘xeqft 452’ to ‘vhwcauea 453’.” In THIS video it’s “I own ALL THE CAMERAS!!!! TICK TOCK TIME TO ROCK!” 1-2 minutes each, hit ALL the major highs and lows, show footage and audio and BOOM! DONE! NEXT CAMERA!!! YOU GONNA LEARN TODAY😂😂😂😂 25 cameras in 25 minutes 😂😂😂 Giving all these review videos a thumbs up and I’m subscribing.😂 Seriously, AMAZING job😂😂😂
Camcorders are extremely nostalgic to me. I started with a Sony camcorder I beat the living hell out of that thing and It still works I passed it down to my nephew. I then moved to a DSLR camera, realizing that DSLRs are NOTHING like camcorders. I'm now going back to camcorders purely for video and using my DSLR purely for photography.
Think you’ve missed the whole idea behind the Zoom. It IS an audio recorder and doesn’t care about video. The video is there for ‘in a pinch’ use and for taking visual notes only and isn’t designed to be a proper camcorder, but a very decent audio recorder. 😉
Used an Sony AX33 for about 3 years - it was my bread and butter while I was shooting Trucks for this magazine - amazing stabilization(when properly handled with the correct posture) almost never used a tripod for it, good balance in colors and the 4k was amazing. Hands down would recommend be it for vlogging or some more professional work.
I just recently found your channel and I may have binged watch at least 8 of them. Thanks for doing your videos. They are informative and got me convinced to get a camcorder. Keep changing the world.
Bro, I started following Markus for health purposes back in 2016-2017 and I love him, and i just find out he loves camcorders!!! Love him even more! I love this video!!
Great fun review... I have used my little SONY for behind the scenes shots on sets and actually have snuck a few frames into a couple of network shows I worked on. Camcorders are so much easier to use than phones for that kind of thing. Loved your review and your energy... really good information.
Hehe, I had an eco sin when I was younger, I adored the idea of recording things and then a couple of years down the track I am running about, notebook in hand doing investigative journalism, man 2020 has been journalism gold
Your videos are the BEST! Informative, as well as entertaining. You cover all the relevant features in rapid fire, yet comprehensive manner. Well Done!
We need camcords to make a comeback. I always wanted one when I was a kid but I was only able to get my first camera when I was 23 as a birthday gift. The fact that some of these camcorders even have an inner gimball makes me wonder what happened that made companies stop making them accesible for the public. I really enjoyed this video, thank you for doing it and showing these amazing comparisons.
I like how straight forward and honest this video is - no bullshit, just "to the point" and if it's junk, X out and move onto the next period point blank. Wish ALL review videos were like this, lmao! Some of the honest reviews on the crappy ones crack me up!! "No name, model number, flip screen's upside down, red shiny thing from China....$30" :D :D :D
I agree, it's great little camcorder. I have two of them. But, the audio is only just alright. My old Canon GL2, which records on digital tape, has a way better stereo mic. --But the CX405 is phenomenal, overall, for the price.
I just love watching this video again and again. I went on vacation to Philippines,April2022 and I brought 2 camcorders with me and a go pro and everytime I go out I would always use the SONY CX405! it’s really handy and it’s just like a toy! Keep making videos like this Markus, it’s really fun to watch. Currently I ordered a USED Canon HF S21, it came out in 2010 with a MSRP of 1399$ and I got it now in 2022 for 127$ I can’t wait to receive it in a couple of days. Peace Markus!
@@MarkusPix hello Markus! I just want to share to you , I received the CANON HF s21 camcorder that I’ve ordered😃 I was actually nervous because the Label in the website says “CANON HF 21” (the cheaper version that retailed 599$ when it was released)but, in their picture they were showing the CANON HF S21 (the one with a view finder and the one that retailed (msrp) 1,399$ when it came out. So last night it arrived via fed ex and I was happy to see it was the CANON HF S21! Everything was in great condition (actually looks like new😅) I only paid 127$! It’s fun! Thank you for your video Markus.
Man, I totally get you about camcorders, the whole idea of just flipping the screen out and GO! Thanks, a much needed video for me. *three thumbs up, if I had three, haha.
Camcorders are awesome! Also if you record enough video you quickly discover that it's good to have back ups, and many of these models have features that are unique to their performance as to create results you can't get with just one camera or camcorder. Excellent video!!
Thanks Markus. I guess I'm going to get myself a camcorder. The only thing the miss in most cases is shallow depth of field, cause they got small sensors :(. But the stabilization is awesome on some of these. DSLRs and mirrorless are so awkward to use for video.
A fun way to spend half a hour. Got my first massive VHS plus seperate camera - Hitachi 6500E if my memory serves me right back in the mid 1980's and I haven't been without a camcorder since then. Awesome way to record the kids growing up.

One mans decent into madness in search of the perfect budget camcorder. His obsession recorded in almost HD.
Markus, thank you so much for your passionate, informative reviews. My girlfriend is a filmmaker that has recently reignited her passion for videography and filmmaking after some traumatic life events and your enthusiasm and energy are inspiring and have helped her get back to the work that she loves. Thank you!
Thank you for showing even the cheapest camcorders!!! You're a fun and honest guy.😅🦝🦊🚳🤣
It filters out the crap from the useful and demonstrates the great and possible.
the $16 camcorder is pretty sweet, you pay a dollar per fps lmao
ikr, pure win.
I wish that’s how things worked
@@nickf4324 yea i got a $68 camcorder and it should shoot 68fps because the price
@@jakevlogs2798 is not the idea with a camcorder that you should be able to watch the movie on your TV. which TV supports 68 Hz
I`d buy an FPS for a dollar!
Why is no-one talking about the fact that he filmed the camera tests in Dumbledoore's office?
Looks more like church
@@damson777 same difference
He does have a cool ass house doesn't he
it's a hughe kitch, but vey fun.
😂😂
If you put my dslr up against similar priced camcorder the contest ENDS at 10 minutes because the dslr quit recording
I have a Sony a6400 and an AX53 - the stuff that comes out of the AX53 is dreamy and movie-like, the a6400 is crisp and quality. I'd take the AX53 footage every single time.
@Arvid Kracht
Z90 is a super high end camcorder LOL
Seeing your videos makes me feel like I am so *at home* with this career choice, after a life of ADHD and career boredom.
Nice one!
Won at christmas, so good luck to everyone else out there!!
Thank you to Markus again, as always helping out the little people!!
I love camcorders.
yes, Master Adobong Manacc.
I never had one and i need to wait 9 days to get one AND ITS THE MOST CHEAPEST OF ALL...
Me too but also portable VCRs. They are so neat.
Me too I hate taking photos with a phone. I use my cell phone for calls and use my cams for photos and videos as God intended
I want to start a collection.
"I love camcorders... and the thing about camcorders is they're made for idiots. You don't even need to know where the on button is..." - QUALITY review.
Lol
This Larry Moore I love this video
🤣
hahahahahaahhaa exactly
That's sarcasm, have you ever heard about it?
I've enjoyed watching this videos. It's better than a commercialized tv series or tv show. I think we're kind of freak or weird having this passion of making video stuff. Its the thing that made us happy.
One of the things that is getting me through the 'vid is planning to travel with the mindset of a 90s camcorder dad......thank you so much. I don't want anything fancy, just the digital equivalent of an old 90s camcorder.
okay but the cameras aside
i really love his humor and personality, everyone should sub him definetly!
I just got a Sony HDR-CX450 for skating. And i love it. The retro feel is all i need. The mic is fantastic and the quality is great.
Hahahaha was just looking for one for skating thanks
Best review I've seen of ANY group of products. I've learned a lot, thank you.
This is why I like RUclips, content that is actually valuable.
This enthusiasm is exactly what I need in life 👏🏾👏🏾
Enthusiasm is all you need lady 🍃🌹☕️🤘
One thing one often finds on camcorders which is costly to find on digital cameras is powerful optical zoom; which may be of importance for some uses; you mentioned it and showed an indoor zoom, it often is the best solution for long shots.
Great video. Camcorders are so under appreciated. I remember when I first started out I was using a camcorder with a giant vhs tape inside and no lcd screen of any kind. I took that thing everywhere with me. I was vlogging in the early 90's when vlogging wasnt even a thing yet. That X900 was very impressive. You are very generous for giving away those camers.
camcorders are the best!
I just discovered your channel, it's really great. Without fuss, honest, simple, no flex with the void, i like it. Thank you. You have a subscriber!
Hey just caught this camcorder review. This is one of the best reviews I've seen on youtube. Never boring & great information too. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
"They're made for idiots..." made me subscribe. Lol
This is how reviews should be done! 💖
And I'm not sure if I'm lucky for being a Panasonic shooter and having some of the in-camera features that some modern DSLRs still don't have, in a camera almost 5 years since release.
Woo Hoo!!! This is more exciting than winning a camera from you. lol
Just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and insight to buying a camcorder that suits my needs and one I could afford. All I need is to find a beautiful woman like Cara to start taking some great videos and pictures. WOW I'M SO EXCITED!!!
A lot went into this, and certainly deserves the like! Thanks for taking the time.
Glad you enjoyed it!
So glad RUclips recommended this video to me - loved it watched it all the way through! :-)
This was an amazing breakdown!
I have no idea why I haven’t found your channel before now.
Thank you for this as I’m looking to change soon. Really liking that Sony Ax33!
Good lighting adds a ton to those camcorders. They don't all test out as well in a dark and dingy high school gym. He's a fun guy. TFS.
I was looking for a video camera today that would work with “sling studio” and I have GOT to say this is BY FAR the FASTEST most AMAZING breakdown of cameras I have EVER run across.
In most normal comparison videos it’s like “why I upgraded from ‘xeqft 452’ to ‘vhwcauea 453’.”
In THIS video it’s “I own ALL THE CAMERAS!!!! TICK TOCK TIME TO ROCK!”
1-2 minutes each, hit ALL the major highs and lows, show footage and audio and BOOM! DONE! NEXT CAMERA!!! YOU GONNA LEARN TODAY😂😂😂😂
25 cameras in 25 minutes 😂😂😂
Giving all these review videos a thumbs up and I’m subscribing.😂
Seriously, AMAZING job😂😂😂
Thanks Andrew
This is one of the best and most entertaining comparison-videos ever made. Thanks for that!
If that's your house, it's amazing!
Wow true class,,the world is missing this level of craftsmanship..a darker place too... thanks for reintroducing me to art.
At the end, it's all about having fun with these cheap kick-around toys; fostering, nurturing creativity through the simplicity of play. Love it.
Exactly!
Interesting and quite eye opening, thank you. Is the zoom feature on most of these cameras optical zoom?
Sheesh, from the cheap to the expensive camcorders, most of them are worth my money. $200 dollar one is the best camera!
I love your videos, some times I just tune in to listen to you talk with enthusiasm, thank you Markus
Brilliant comparison. This was so much fun to watch, thanks Markus!
I bought my first camcorder in 1986. Was an RCA shoulder operated one.
Cheap Sony's have it nailed, amazing for the price.
When you showed the video quality of that Sony TG-5V, i was relieved to see something of superior quality compared to the knock-offs shown before it.
Don't know why I got recommended this, but I like it :-)
Your videos are the BEST!
Finally stuff I can afford LOL
THE PANNELING IN THAT HOUSE IS LUSH
"DOES IT HAVE A MIC JACK?! DOES IT HAVE A MIC JACK?!" lmao 😫😫😫
Hahahaaha that was funny
Yeah its funny because everyone looking for camera that does video always complains about it. LOL
this has actually been me today lol
I like how straight forward and honest this video is - no bullshit, just "to the point" and if it's junk, X out and move onto the next period point blank. Wish ALL review videos were like this, lmao! Some of the honest reviews on the crappy ones crack me up!! "No name, model number, flip screen's upside down, red shiny thing from China....$30" :D :D :D
It’s so awesome to see twins working so close together, and sharing their passion for video.
I was so entertained, experiencing all these video cameras with you. Thanks for the effort Markus! 🤓
Can we talk about his library/study/background ?
this was cool. I wanna see more of that dolly zoom option
That Sony 405 for 200 dollars is amazing, even the audio sounds alright!
Thanks, yes it is like a fun little toy, very dependable
@@MarkusPix hello Markus!
I just want to share to you , I received the CANON HF s21 camcorder that I’ve ordered😃 I was actually nervous because the Label in the website says
“CANON HF 21” (the cheaper version that retailed 599$ when it was released)but, in their picture they were showing the CANON HF S21 (the one with a view finder and the one that retailed (msrp) 1,399$ when it came out. So last night it arrived via fed ex and I was happy to see it was the CANON HF S21! Everything was in great condition (actually looks like new😅) I only paid 127$! It’s fun!
Thank you for your video Markus.
What an honest and down to earth comparison. Will be going through your catalog of videos for sure.
Man, I totally get you about camcorders, the whole idea of just flipping the screen out and GO! Thanks, a much needed video for me. *three thumbs up, if I had three, haha.
this is the first video i watched from him and its my favourite
dude im not even into videography and i still love the hell outa this vid right on
Camcorders are awesome!
Also if you record enough video you quickly discover that it's good to have back ups, and many of these models have features that are unique to their performance as to create results you can't get with just one camera or camcorder.
Excellent video!!
I just can't get bored of this video, got to love your humor!
The audio from the $44 vmotal sounds like 90's and it's great for old themed shoots.
Edit: also a 2004 to 2008 video quality
this is so interesting. didn't know Camcorders can do so many things
I wonder why people dont use these more for vlogging especially with the great image stabe.
I definitely Love VHS Qualities Cam❤
Really good stuff! To me....the best thing about this video is the quality of the mic you're using for narration!! What is it, it sounds terrific!!!!
The Sony CX line with the Carl Zeiss Lens were good when they came out
"It's got a really good LSD screen" HAHAHA I'm dying! Subscribed
Thanks Markus. I guess I'm going to get myself a camcorder. The only thing the miss in most cases is shallow depth of field, cause they got small sensors :(. But the stabilization is awesome on some of these. DSLRs and mirrorless are so awkward to use for video.
I did a few videos after this one on squeezing out some depth of field with camcorders
A fun way to spend half a hour. Got my first massive VHS plus seperate camera - Hitachi 6500E if my memory serves me right back in the mid 1980's and I haven't been without a camcorder since then. Awesome way to record the kids growing up.
