My only gripe with most of the 4K camcorders you showed is that they top out at 30FPS in 4K mode. When you're filming action (sports or other fast movement) or if you want to add some extra stabilization in post then shooting at 60FPS with a high shutter speed makes a *world* of difference to the resulting footage. If you're looking for a camcorder that does 4K @ 60FPS then you'll be paying more and it's likely to be bigger/heavier. I opted for the Panasonic HC-X1500 because it was the lightest 4K/60 camcorder I could find at any price and although it's far from perfect I do like the extra functionality you get for the price. I'm surprised that more vloggers aren't using the small VX981 or CX405 though... they're a much better option (IMHO) than the more common (and more expensive) vlogging cameras so often used. Hell, I've even been known to vlog with my HCX1500 but to do that requires that you've got really strong arms and shoulders 🙂
I couldn't agree more. In Australia, the Legria/Vixia HF G70 is 4k 25/30p for A$1890 rrp. Heading up the price tree all the way to the top of the handhelds gets us the Canon XA75 for $4350 rrp. It is now available August 27,2024. ( cx405 is no longer available). Sony AX700 is also discontinued on B&H. Canon vixia g70 is still above my budget. I am happy that now I placed my order for Panasonic VX981, expecting to receive by tomorrow. Thank you so much for sharing your talents and expertise on youtube. Please keep it up. I currently have Nikon D7200. Will save for Sony A7RV. So happy I found this channel.
I bought one of those little punk-ass Sony CX405 on the advice of some random youtube guy (Hi, Markus!) and I love the little thing for all the reasons Markus mentioned in the first 30 seconds. I can do all the f-stop/exposure photo stuff, but sometimes you just want to take some pictures. Yeah, baby!
I went for a second hand Sony VG30 after Marcus recommended it. Interchangable Lens, Dolby microphone. Love it. Also it takes great stills.. and s large choice of Sony Lenses of which I now have four.
I bought the 405 on your recommendation.. July 2022 It's Brilliant 😻 1080 mp4 ideal for RUclips. .. & Stereo. Looks like my next camera to work with the 405 is the most expensive of these as the middle ones don't seem to out perform the 405.. Apparently there is a blurry function in 405 settings. I've filmed Jupiter's Moon's, a little blurry.. but amazing to do. Did you find the second battery compartment also there's a plugin controller.. apparently it will keep the shutter open and other things.
Hello Markus hello from Las vegas ! So I have a question I need your help. Ok so I am trying to buy a Panasonic video camera at affordable price now between the Panasonic Hc- vx981 vs Panasonic vx991 which one delivers best video quality in 4k during the day and best night vision function let's say which one is the best all around?
I shot video mostly with a big Sony mirrorless camera but I'm intrigued by camcorders, and I want one for quick and easy quality video as you mentioned. I don't buy the argument that out of focus background is the mark of a professional, I like to blur the background if the background is ugly and distracting, but I really like to shoot in beautiful backgrounds which I want to see clearly.
I love what you have to say and your knowledge. I just got the vx870, then watched this video. I just want to shoot my sons outdoor soccer. And want a zoom better than my iphone. Should i take back the unopened 870 and get 981? Or ax700, panasonic 1500? I want a clean video thats in focus, i dont really care about blurry backgrounds. I dont need 10 bit 4:2:2 either. I just want auto focus/tracking and stabilization. Please help🙏 i tried the fx30 and it was too much, i want a camcorder. They will be making a come back, camera’s are Not for Video😆
Got a general question for you: I have a DJI Pocket 3, which you so accurately described as a "wide angle lens on a stick," because that's exactly what it is! Even so, I am BLOWN away by the video quality on this puppy! Is there any hand-held/handicam-type camcorder that has video quality that can match the Pocket 3? I haven't found one yet. The Pocket 3 has a "lifelike" quality of the picture, that doesn't look like a recording..it looks "live"! Please help, as this is driving me crazy!!!
Hi Markus, in your opinion, what model camcorder, if any, is the best for low light filming at night of slowmoving luminated aircraft. Must have top notch stabilization and video clarity. Price, I do not need all the bells and whistles just the best for what I intend it to do as mentioned. Thanks.
Appreciate everything you do Markus! I stumbled upon your channel while looking for a cinema style camera and you showed off the JVC LS300, ever since I’ve been on the hunt for one.
Love your videos and enthusiasm! Question about the Panasonic. If I plug in an external mic, does it disable the onboard mic? This is CRITICAL as I’m shooting guitar videos and do NOT want the room sound I’d get with the onboard mic. I have Shure SM57’s mic’d right up close to the speaker cabinet. I want my chosen mic to be heard, nothing else.
@@MarkusPix Thank you Markus! 🙏👍💪 Sounds like this camera is the perfect solution for my RUclips guitar channel. I show the guitar and talk about it, then a short demo of how it plays and sounds. The GoPro is not ideal for audio. I need simple, I just need good audio, so I’ll be using an external preamp adapter.
great video, could you use a camcorder for recording a road trip while driving that does not show too much vibration when mounted on the dash or window. Cheers
This was an awesome teaching! We are having trouble filming since we added a LED video wall to our stage. Once the presenter gets close to the Video wall, the brightness of the wall makes the camera darken the area beside the wall where the person is standing. Do you sugest we go with the VX 981 or CX 405m for this issue?
The Panasonic Lumix FZ300, with its 1/2.3 sensor, has been my video camera for 7 years. Still using it today. The features are seemingly endless. I love this camera.
Love this video. I was using a Panasonic hdc-sd60 camcorder for my little craft RUclips channel. I do mostly overhead shots in a low light room as I don’t have space for lots of lights. I took some time off but going back to it and wanted to get a new camera as the videos were looking too grainy. I also don’t want to spend a ton of money on one and for what I do I think 4K is a bit overkill. Do you know how it would compare to the Sony cx450?
I have a Sony HDR-CX210 that seems to take clearer video than the FDR-AX43 and the on board omnidirectional mic is crystal clear! 🤟 Wayyyyyyyyy better vs AX43 😐
I can always rely on you Marcus to tell me what I need to know about photography and I’m trying to dig out my old video cameras because I have a question for you about the format. I could never get my computers to accept the old format that they recorded in I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m trying to find the cameras so I can explain to you what I need to know. Thank you Marcus for this really great video.
Hey Markus thanks for the videos! Can the Panasonic VX981 record without the screen being open? What would be your recommendation? Thank you for you videos! Cheers!

Hello Markus. Thanks a lot for your review ! I am currently located in Spain and it seems i cant find the Panasonic Videocámara 4K Ultra HD HC-VX981K. Is there something else similar for Europe or any workaround ? Thanks in advance, best regards
That's a great video. Does any of these camcorders have a remote control? There are time during my videos when I would like to pause without getting out of the shot.
Panasonic VX1 or Sony X43? I'm really looking for good stability and good zoom working with the camera's automatic functions. I need it to record people from afar and for the person's face to be recognized
Just discovered your channel...Excellent info! Have you compared Panasonic vx981 with Panasonic vx1? If so, which do you prefer for mainly landscape video.
been watching mirrorless dslr videos the past month after finding this video i know ive been in the wrong place. cannot be more excited to be a camcoder guy again thanks markus!!
Hello Marcus, thank you for the video. Has anything changed since January? What is the smallest camcorder (with eye viewfinder) with the best image quality? Can you recommend something like this? Warm regards! M
@@MarkusPix Thank you for the quick reply. Very difficult to find these models in Europe :( Panasonic doesn't make things easier either: there are many cameras and each of them has different names... WXF991K - do you recognize this model?
I think im sold on a camcorder. I like my mirrorless cameras, but I've been doing more virtual video production. Having one lens, one body, and natively tetherable to a computer is awesome.
I’m trying to pick a camera for very low light conditions. What I will be recording are cars racing at night. Would you recommend the ax700 for that because of the larger sensor, or still the vx981?
@wiredtwirp Thanks for your reply. I tried looking at the specifications on the Panasonic website but each have a different type of webpage (also not easy to look at on mobile) so I couldn't see any differences... I've just thought.. Is the frame rate different due to mains HZ 60 in USA= 30 + 60 FPS and 50hz in UK= 25 + 50 FPS... Real thing is do you recommend the 980? I've seen them secondhand £300-£400. I have a Sony 405 which Markus recommended.. very good stabilisation, zoom 60x mechanical and 350x electronic, 1080p & 9mp stills, good wide angle lens etc.. stereo audio, lots of functions (which are semi automatic, it's really difficult to mess up) or full auto (I use this as I am filming as things actually happen), trying to set-up YT chanel.. I really like it. Only negative is mic socket. I would like a second camera and Markus recommended the 981. Any things to look for when secondhand?
Hi Markus,do you think as a beginner it would be better to buy the Sony CX405 or splurge on the Sony AX53? My goal is to record cinematic clips for vlogs similar to Kianna Nomani thanks!
Hello Marcus, I often film in dark places like theatre-plays, sometime the lights blow out, and other times the exposure is just too dark. Is there any advice you can give me? (putting on more lights is not an option for obvious reasons...)
Sony AX43A has the screen from the AX53. AX43A replaced the AX43. Anyways I like more Canon G70 Zoom lever just like AX700. It is better than AX43(A)/AX53 has. Canon G70 has actually clearly less grain in low light than its previous model. I agree I have lens cap fetish too. I'm always surprised the audio of CX405. Your channel is super great with these little secrets in the world where price doesn't tell everything.
I got the HC-VX981 last week to record my son's orchestra concert last night. It came out great, even though I was sitting maybe 300 feet back, even sounded great.
Markus - I bought the Panasonic 981 and I bought a 4K external monitor but when I’m in record mode 4K, the external monitor doesn’t work. The external monitor will work if I take it out of 4K mode and put it in 1080 60p Am I doing something wrong or do you know a trick or an external monitor that will work in 4K mode? Thank you so much your videos inspire me and you are the reason I bought the Panasonic 981 ❤
Hi, I just bought a used Ax100e for 330 euros, what do you think, because I understood is like the 700 but older version. Is my first camera and I want to learn filming (years ago I filmed with a Nikon D5200 and was pretty terrible). As I understood no one has manual focus?
Hey markus, please compare panasonic vx1 vs your favourite panasonic vx981. I have cx405 (not 4k), ax700 (too bulky), zv1 (limited focal length) and fx30 (complicated for travel). I need to buy an all in one camera that can stay in my pocket all the time. cx405 is great for that purpose but it laks temporal and spatial resolution. vx981 looks great alternative but at widest angle, it is equivalent to 29mm while the vx1 is 25mm. vx1 is comparable in size to vx981. they why should I not buy the vx1 instead of the vx981. there is a weight difference of about 100g but I will get 25mm wide. I need your views on it.
Yes, I would also like to know why you have chosen the 981 over the vxf1. I'm hesitating between those two models. Thanks to you I have the sony xc405 @MarkusPix
Mark, you would know...Im considering switching to Sony, I like Sony's Multi Cam function. Can you do a video about the Muti Cam function theres not one good one on all of RUclips! I think I can do up to 5 cameras controlled by my CX405 or AX43? Im going with Sony Action cams as secondary cams
Thank you for another great video and what perfect timing, as I'm looking to buy a camcorder for an association I belong to. I have to record our monthly meetings and have decided to go the camcorder route vs mirrorless or DLSR's or whatever they're called.
How does a Camcorder like these hold up to a Insta360 Ace Pro. I want to get a few for my channel, But Im curious to know if i Benefit from using a Camcorder as a main camera.
Funny you mention the Sony CX-405. I own a couple of things. My biggest complaint with them is when I go out and record a band with it, it tends to overdrive the audio and distorts. On the flipside of that I have a canon SX 150 camera that is from 2012, and the audio on it is phenomenal. in fact it was better than my iPhone, and way better than the Sony camera which I'm actually kind of surprised about. Any tips for getting better audio from the Sony at higher db applications? Only saw one option in there and I changed it but I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. I didn't see a level control. Thanks. Your videos are very informative
Actually the 405 has amazing audio, but it captures what's around the camera, not what the camera is pointing at 30 ft away, so if the audience is closer to the camera than the stage, obviously that will be louder, and since it records 2 ch stereo, all that reverberation of the sound bouncing off the ceiling and walls, it will create a mess in the recording. However, when your are in a clean audio environment, the audio is amazing ruclips.net/video/KmZH3rGjjlQ/видео.html

Yeah, baby!
I like the 405 .. no messing around.. just start filming 😻
See my reply to a comment starting with.... The CX405...
and my comments.
I went for a second hand Sony VG30 after Marcus recommended it. Interchangable Lens, Dolby microphone. Love it. Also it takes great stills.. and s large choice of Sony Lenses of which I now have four.
I bought the 405 on your recommendation..
July 2022
It's Brilliant 😻
1080 mp4 ideal for RUclips.
Ax700 is the best. I shot movies with it and it's just perfect.
What kind of movies?
🍑💦💦💦🍆
Oh interesting, I just bought an ax100e, and I would like to start filming short movies to have fun as an hobby
Sunday's best youtube notification !
I could've beat you... I'm halfway through the video

Is there a physical remote control for the Panasonic 981?
Absolute brilliance except I bought a Sony cx 450 should I change it for a cx405😢
👍
Thanks Markus for your video. Loved it to bits. I am using video switcher Atem Mini pro for live streaming. Does the VX980 have clean hdmi output?
We also love the CX405 and did a review and tips, tricks and modifications for it.
Thanks Markus for talking about this Handycam!

It's about the battery compartment..

Could you explain what you mean?
Camcorders are a lot of fun to use. I really enjoy watching your videos and your enthusiasm for the gear you are presenting. Keep up the great work!
Please help, as this is driving me crazy!!!
dont know why, but this was fun to watch. from beginning to the end. Good job.
Great video, Thanks for all the tips and advice. Im looking for a low light camcorder to record bands in bars. What do you recommend?
So glad still rate the 405 as your favorite, I've had mine since they first came out, for mostly wildlife and travel it's the Best
👍
Hi Markus, in your opinion, what model camcorder, if any, is the best for low light filming at night of slowmoving luminated aircraft.
Must have top notch stabilization and video clarity. Price, I do not need all the bells and whistles just the best for what I intend it to do as mentioned.
Thanks.
Hi, great videos, thanks, do you know the difference between a VX980 and a VX981 please?
I am in the UK, and I think the VX980 is the UK version?
These are really good product comparison videos. Low jargon, and your enthusiasm really shows throughout.
Thanks
Omg I can wait for your bridge camera video. I’m not even in the market for one I just love watching your videos.
Which stabilization setting do you use for the Sony Cx405?
Intelligent Active
Whats the best one Markus? I need an expert opinion
Appreciate everything you do Markus! I stumbled upon your channel while looking for a cinema style camera and you showed off the JVC LS300, ever since I’ve been on the hunt for one.
What would you recommend for recording air shows?
Have you done a video on video camera audio recording? If not that could be a good topic. XLR and external against 3.5mm internal recording mics.
which would you use if only shooting indoors? Like a woodshop with decent lighting from leds above?
Love your videos and enthusiasm! Question about the Panasonic. If I plug in an external mic, does it disable the onboard mic? This is CRITICAL as I’m shooting guitar videos and do NOT want the room sound I’d get with the onboard mic. I have Shure SM57’s mic’d right up close to the speaker cabinet. I want my chosen mic to be heard, nothing else.
yes its either or
@@MarkusPix Thank you Markus!
Such a fun series Mr. Markus and so glad your doing it 'cause a lot of us (like yourself) just love Camcorders..
Very pleased to see my gear at the first place !
Got it for a couple of years and it's getting better and better.
Can you tell me which Sony handycam is the best optical zoom ? I am deciding one ❤
What camcorder is good for recording surfing videos? Good zoom and good focus?
great video, could you use a camcorder for recording a road trip while driving that does not show too much vibration when mounted on the dash or window. Cheers
Hello!
Can you do a custom picture profile for the Sony AX700?
fantastic information Markrrus - - thank you for sharing all your many years experience in the movie industry
Glad it was helpful!
A lot of people like the Sony ZV1. As for camcorders, nothing beats the Panasonc VX981 in my opinion for price, size, quality and ease of use
I have two Sony Vx405's. I've used them for years. Fantastic little cameras.
I have a CX-405. I was amazed at how well the image stabilization worked.
I know right?!
See my other comments and reply to a comment starting with... "The CX405..."
Always great to see your videos. ❤
What do u think of the canon g40 I might get it?
Hey Markus thanks for the videos! Can the Panasonic VX981 record without the screen being open? I'm looking for the perfect compact camcorder to film outdoor recreation and hunting and need one that can be attached to a head mount or be able to record without the screen being out and open. What would be your recommendation? Thank you for you videos!
Cheers!
Wait you can add camcorders to head mounts?
@@Urbanexploration123yes! Theres a company that makes a ball cap with a side mount. I’ll most likely use the GoPro still for head mount pov but want a camera that can record with more zoom
This is the only channel I trust for camera stuff. As a filmmaker, I would love to get your opinion on what camcorder would be good for a filmmaker not wanting to spend a ton and keep equipment light. Thank you Markus!
Hello Markus. Thanks a lot for your review ! I am currently located in Spain and it seems i cant find the Panasonic Videocámara 4K Ultra HD HC-VX981K. Is there something else similar for Europe or any workaround ? Thanks in advance, best regards
I owned 2 Sony CX900 along with an AX100... BEST camcorder setup I ever had I LOVE those Sony 1" sensors
Which camera did you use to make this video?
That's a great video. Does any of these camcorders have a remote control? There are time during my videos when I would like to pause without getting out of the shot.
You can control the VX981 remotely with an app
@@MarkusPix Thanks!
I knew the VX981 would be in there 😄
Panasonic VX1 or Sony X43? I'm really looking for good stability and good zoom working with the camera's automatic functions. I need it to record people from afar and for the person's face to be recognized
Just discovered your channel...Excellent info! Have you compared Panasonic vx981 with Panasonic vx1? If so, which do you prefer for mainly landscape video.
I definitely prefer the VX981. It's smaller, lighter and more fun
been watching mirrorless dslr videos the past month after finding this video i know ive been in the wrong place. cannot be more excited to be a camcoder guy again thanks markus!!
Hello Marcus,
thank you for the video. Has anything changed since January?
What is the smallest camcorder (with eye viewfinder) with the best image quality?
Can you recommend something like this?
Warm regards!
M
Nothing's changed. I still like the Panasonic. They have a version with viewfinder, I think its called the VX991
@@MarkusPix Thank you for the quick reply.
Very difficult to find these models in Europe :(
Panasonic doesn't make things easier either: there are many cameras and each of them has different names...
WXF991K - do you recognize this model?
I think im sold on a camcorder. I like my mirrorless cameras, but I've been doing more virtual video production. Having one lens, one body, and natively tetherable to a computer is awesome.
Does any of these have slowmotion video?
I’m trying to pick a camera for very low light conditions. What I will be recording are cars racing at night. Would you recommend the ax700 for that because of the larger sensor, or still the vx981?
I've tried looking up the VX981 ..
Seems it might be a USA model as search in the UK comes up with the VX980.. or the VX981 is sold out.
Same thing
@wiredtwirp
Any idea what the difference is between the 980 and the 981?
@wiredtwirp
Thanks for your reply.
Some camcorders have a concert option in scene setting. Otherwise, switch to manual and adjust the exposure manually
Either aperture or ISO/gain or larger sensor size will help. Try the ax700 (rent it or borrow).
What is the best way to reduce the blurry background? I purchased the AX43 and when recording soccer games as I zoom in the edge blurrs.
Hi marcus can you share us the settings you made in AX43a? It looks good only in your settings thanks :)
Hi!!! I wanted to ask if there is a camcorder you would recomend for home family videos, I want something good but not to expensive
I suggest the VX981 ruclips.net/video/KmZH3rGjjlQ/видео.html
and ruclips.net/video/V-cwoviVlIg/видео.html
I got the HC-VX981 last week to record my son's orchestra concert last night. It came out great, even though I was sitting maybe 300 feet back, even sounded great.
👍
Witch camcorder would you recommend for a 2
Person podcast? Love the video by the way
Does the Panasonic perform better in low light than the ax700 with a full sensor?
Halo sir I am from India
1 question for u ?
How is best camera panasonic v785 or sony 405
Markus - I bought the Panasonic 981 and I bought a 4K external monitor but when I’m in record mode 4K, the external monitor doesn’t work. The external monitor will work if I take it out of 4K mode and put it in 1080 60p
Am I doing something wrong or do you know a trick or an external monitor that will work in 4K mode?
Thank you so much your videos inspire me and you are the reason I bought the Panasonic 981
❤
If you were going to record a soccer game would you choose the ax700, g70, or the Panasonic?
They're all good
Hi, I just bought a used Ax100e for 330 euros, what do you think, because I understood is like the 700 but older version. Is my first camera and I want to learn filming (years ago I filmed with a Nikon D5200 and was pretty terrible). As I understood no one has manual focus?
Thanks for this video, are there any you can record sound with on a lav mic?
All of them except CX405
@@MarkusPix Thank you for replying so quickly!!! Great video. I love camcorders, prefer them to phones.
That CX405 is still a great little camcorder.
👍
I really like my 405.
See the reply to the comment starting with.. "The CX405..."
I like everything I heard about the 405 but I don't like the mini SD card part of it
Thanks for the comparisons and sharing your opinions. What do you reckon about something like the WXF991?
its pretty much the same camera but with a viewfinder and a little 2nd caera in the door that can point backwards which I dont need
Hi marcus, can you help us with the settings of ax43a sony? You settings looks very good on screen. Can you make video of this? Thanks
What do you think of new AX43A or the Canon Legria?
From what I can tell the only difference is the 43A has a better LCD screen, but has the same tiny sensor etc
Waiting for your comment. 😊
Yes, I would also like to know why you have chosen the 981 over the vxf1. I'm hesitating between those two models. Thanks to you I have the sony xc405 @MarkusPix
It would be nice to see the Nikon P1000 included in the next video. In my head it is sort of the reference bridge cam.
Yeah they run a lot longer and are easier to use
The Sony CX-405 is awesome for a consumer cam. I shoot all my campground reviews on that cam. Thanks again for a great review.
How does a Camcorder like these hold up to a Insta360 Ace Pro. I want to get a few for my channel, But Im curious to know if i Benefit from using a Camcorder as a main camera.
I absolutely love the camcorder vids my favorites from your channel all your videos are great though.
😊
Another great video! Always fun to see you on Sundays! Gracias.
