  • For the last month I've been product testing the new Canon Legria HF G70 digital video camera. This is an independent user review with me explaining my experience with the camera in the real world. I’m not a professional camera reviewer and there are no benchmarks or lab tests against other cameras. The testing is carried out against how I use the camera which may not be how you intend to use the camera.

    The product reviewed was supplied to me by Amazon as a member of the Amazon Vine programme. I was invited into the programme in 2019, having been a contributer of reviews on Amazon since 2003. During those twenty years I have carried out over 1,000 reviews and was a Top 25 reviewer until Amazon discontinued the Hall of Fame leaderboards. I get no financial incentive for my reviews, nor do I have any contact with the manufacturers. I have no time constraints on using the product so can spend as long as I like getting to know a product. All of the opinions in my reviews are entirely my own, and I can assure you that if I will be just as likely to tell you the flaws of a product as I am the positives. Thanks for watching.

    Clearly you are not the target market for this device and should have refused to review it. You started off very well, discussing the size but failed to touch on the real reason it's that big. It hides a 20x optical zoom lens which is about 601mm with a max aperture of f/1.8 - 2.8. This type and quality of glass doesn't come cheap. If you were to buy this for a dslr or mirrorless camera, you would have to pay a lot. From this angle, the price is justified. especially because of its near flawless performance in low light. There is no way your iPhone can provide such magnification although your iPhone will perform well in low light. The camcorder also has a lovely microphone, preventing the need for external mics in most cases. To say you ditched this camcorder for your iPhone is acceptable in certain situations, but a more comprehensive review would have touched on the other side of the story which limits what the iPhone can do. This, however, is missing in your review. Finally, you start off in your studio and end the review in your studio, calling it a glorified webcam. This shows your use case is limited and i would say biased. I would have expected a 'real world' review showing its zoom, low light, image stabilisation capabilities, etc, to give us a more balanced view. I own this device and I love it. it zooms and performs better than comparable canon mirrorless cameras of the same price in low light conditions and captures sound extremely well.

      I appreciate your feedback, truly I do, but I believe you might have missed the purpose of Amazon Vine reviews. They are not for professional, specialist and paid reviewers to pull apart every aspect of a product and compare it against a library of other products. They are for everyday members of the public to evaluate products, comment on their experience and provide similar minded people the tools to decide whether that product might be for them. There are countless specialist review channels that will go into the detail that you are looking for. I don't test studio conditions or set up intricate outdoor demonstations because I don't have those kinds of facilities. My studio, as you call it, is my office. Nothing flashy about it.
      You say that my review was biaised, which I refute. I have no connection to the camera. I haven't paid for it, nor do I get any kind of payment or incentive for my reviews, and have no reason to be critical or defensive of it. I'm giving my entirely honest opinion and not swayed by any financial stake I've made in the product, which is very clearly something that happens when people do spend a lot of money on something. That is the unique impartiality of Amazon Vine reviews.
      My real world experience is just what I passed on in the video. I wasn't reviewing an iPhone so had no reason to go into the shortcomings of that device. Unless I need a zoom function, the iPhone does most of what I want. If want more than that I use my mirrorless camera. I've continued to use the Canon G70 for a couple of months now, for a variety of purposes, and if I'm totally blunt I'm more disappointed with it than when I was in the video. In a narrow band of activities it has strengths, almost exclusively revolving around its zoom lens. I would still very definitely use an external mic for outdoor use as the built-in one pics up a lot of wind noise. The low light use is reasonable when out and about, but I'd still use external lighting for most applications. And, without the optional remote, it's a very poor camera for single person creators. For me, it's not the right camera for what I use cameras for, and that's why it's become my glorified webcam. It wasn't intended for that purpose, but I have other cameras that do a better job of what I use cameras for.
      I'm glad you're enjoying your camera though. That's the main thing.

    I was surprised when Canon introduced this camcorder and removed the HF G60 with a 1 inch sensor which I have. The HF g60 is a great camcorder and produces quality video. I agree it is bulky, but I like Canon colour and the lens itself is top notch. The point of having a camcorder is that it doesn't require the extra lens, filters etc that one would need if taking video with a mirrorless camera. Using the camcorder with a monopod keeps the iPhone at bay! I have taken video with iPhone but found limitations in post editing. I believe canon have made a mistake with the G70 and should have refined the G60 to meet todays need. An honest review which I appreciated.

    These cameras are not comparable with a S5 II or similar. Try shoot something @600mm with a full frame camera and see how big the lens is and how comfortable to use the combination becomes. Or try shooting a long ceremony non stop, which this thing can do for hours, when a bigger battery is attached. And definitely try to achieve slow and smooth zoom in (or out) with the photo lenses S5 II takes. The camcorder as a type of camera has it's purposes and for doing them - it's irreplaceable. I work in a TV station and camcorders (a bit bigger and more professional than this particular one) are the only type of camera the whole media uses. 8 cameramen shooting every single day hours of footage.

    Does this camera have clean HDMI out?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  8 месяцев назад

      A bit of a tricky one this. The camera has a micro HDMI out port, which in itself isn’t ideal. There’s room for a full HDMI port in my opinion, but that’s by the by. The options relating to the HDMI port are pretty basic, limited to HDMI Max Resolution (options being 1920x1080 and 1280x720 - you cannot stream at 4k, only record to MicroSD card at 4k), HDMI scan mode (P or PsF)….and that’s it. There’s an option to turn on or off the onscreen displays as well. On many cameras, certainly Canon DSLR and Full Frame cameras, there’s a specific option to choose Clean HDMI output to remove all screen displays for streams over HDMI. That option doesn’t exist on the G70, certainly not what I’ve found anyway.
      Personally, I don’t use the HDMI port at all. I use the USB-C out port, which is right next to the HDMI port, to connect to my laptop. Windows automatically picks up the G70 as a webcam and streams a clean image with no onscreen displays. I use this option to connect the G70 to Streamlabs as a video source, alongside a number of other genuine webcams. I have no issue streaming multiple cameras, including the G70, without onscreen displays up to 1920x1080. There’s no need for a video capture device such as the Elgato USB stick, it just works via a decent quality USB-C / Thunderbolt cable.
      It’s annoying that it doesn’t stream 4K, and it’s even more annoying that all of the physical menu and record controls are on the rear of the camera so if using it to self-record, like I do, you have to learn to navigate it blind from the front.
      Hope that helps.

      Thank you so much for your video and your sights. Do I get it right? You cannot stream 4K to your laptop? I read as well that the USB-C out port does not support the audio-file. Is this correct? @@ToughMonkey

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  8 месяцев назад

      @@rainergunterknobloch8540 I'm afraid that's correct. The camera records in 4K, as in it'll save 4K video to an SD card, which you can then transfer to your computer for editing etc, but it does not allow you to stream 4K video over either HDMI or USB-C to your computer. It's a little frustrating.
      As for no sound over USB-C, that also appears to be correct. I'll admit that I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it. I use a Blue Yeti Microphone for my streamed recordings so hadn't clocked that it doesn't appear as an input device in Windows' sound settings.

    Interesting review but watching it straight through is a very disturbing. The "camera" you used to do almost all of this vid kept on having problems with focus, adjusting for your "off your mark" movements; the lighting and focus adjustments disrupts the flow of the vid, for me. Oh, I do own a g70 (paid with my own money) $979 USD + tax(of course) I agree with the non-hand use, I like tripod for this camcorder. So for your vid why not set the other camcorder you usedon manual to avoid all that auto adjustments? Why did you not show any "outside" vids you shot with the g70 and did amazon let you keep it (please be honest)?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  5 месяцев назад

      The majority of the recording was done on one of my webcams (either a Logitech Brio or a C920, I forget which one) as up to that point it’s what I did all of my video reviews on. I can’t remember if I mention it in the video but both of those webcams are prone to hunting around for focus especially if you move around a lot like I often do with my hands. My video reviews are an accompaniment to the Amazon reviews I do so are never going to be anything like Marcus Brownlee, Gerald Undone or the many others with large resources, full studio and a team of staff. It’s just me in my box room, but in Amazon reviews world these are far beyond what the vast majority are like and Amazon seem to appreciate them. I only stick them on RUclips after they’ve gone on Amazon.
      The Amazon Vine programme is where manufacturers of products submit them to Amazon and they send them out to trusted reviewers. The reviewers don’t get paid and we have no contact from the manufacturer at all and no influence on our reviews. They ask that I base my review on my own use of the product and not on what I think others might use it for. And that’s an important bit here. I tested the Canon based on how I will use it, not on what other people might use it for. The premise is that it’s not possible to test in all conditions for all users, so it’s purely on what I’d use it for. Vine reviews have had a lot of negativity in the past as many people believe that they’re paid reviews and ratings are manipulated. The simple truth is that Vine reviewers have no investment in the product and can be totally isolated in their views. We’ve not paid for the product so haven’t got a vested interest in it which can easily sway opinions, and we’re not paid or sponsored by anyone so our views are absolutely and categorically independent. We also have more time with a product and get to use them in our daily lives unlike a great many of the mainstream review sites. Plus Amazon don’t care if I rate a product 1 or 5 stars, but what they do care about is finding issues that may cause them reputational damage. Vine reviewers are contractually obliged to test and submit a review within one month of receiving it and to keep the product for a minimum of 6 months (assuming it’s not a consumable), after which they can do what they want with it. Sell it, bin it, donate it or keep it. Of the 800+ products I’ve reviewed on the Vine programme I’ve sold maybe five or six items, flat out binned probably 50 items, and the rest I’ve still got if I haven’t used it/eaten it.
      Specifically with regards to the Canon, I still have it and every RUclips video I’ve done since this one has been filmed on it. It’s very definitely not what it was designed for, but it’s head and shoulders above anything else I’ve got and I work around the issues I mention in the video as best I can. It’s fast approaching a year since I received the camera and my appreciation of it now is higher than at the time of recording the video, but I’m still critical of then size of it. I rarely take it out despite having many opportunities to use it on a location. It’s just too bulky to carry around unless you’re doing a proper shoot. The single biggest issue though for me remains its inability to stream in 4k to my computer. It only records in 4k to the memory card, not when it’s connected over USB-C. Otherwise I’d love it to bits.

      That's actually a situation that I believe this particular camera would be very good for. The focal length would be beneficial, and 5 axis stabilisation will help smooth out hand-held filming. This camera is at its best when the person making the film isn't the subject of the film. If you're behind the camera filming other subjects, especially at distance, then it plays to the strengths of this camera. I would be interested to see how it handles automatic focus shifting of a sports match though. It's very good at tracking a single subject in frame, and does a better job of keeping focus on that subject when they move around then many cameras I've tried, but I've not had a situation where there are lots of subjects moving around like on a sports field. I don't know if it would hunt around between players. Also, bear in mind it isn't weather sealed, so have a waterproof bag with you if it starts raining at the game.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  7 месяцев назад

      I’ve had some, but I wouldn’t say comprehensive, experience with the image stabilisation. I’ve taken the Canon with us on a few trips away and done some hand held filming, but as I said on the video it’s just not how I use the camera. Even when it’s there as an option to use the Canon, I will favour using my iPhone 14 Pro for handheld filming as it’s just more convenient and easy to use when you’re running after a dog or scrambling up the side of a mountain. The vast majority of my use of the Canon is done with the camera stationary on either my table mount when I’m filming in my office, or on one of my tripods. I’ve put in 500+ hours of filming with the Canon since I’ve had it, and perhaps an hour of that has been hand held filming so while I would say that what I have filmed with the Canon on the fly has been very good I wouldn’t say I’m the authority on its stabilisation. I will say, however, for what I do use it for the image quality is superb and way above what I get from any of the other cameras I’ve got at my disposal. I just with it was capable of doing 4K in UVC mode.

You’re right about going back to the phone because it’s with you 24hrs a day, and they’ve become so good that it’s only very specific occasions when we need something more suitable. What better options do you recommend? Can you name a few?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  Год назад +2

      Depends on budget and ultimate use of the camera. If I was being honest for what I personally use the camera for I’d say I should go with something like the Sony ZV-E10 with Sony handgrip which will be around £800-850. Rolling shutter is apparently terrible but I generally use fixed locations for my filming. The older Sony ZV-1 is still quite popular and could be had for less money. While I say that’s what I should buy, what I would want to buy is the Panasonic Lumix S5 II, Fuji X-H2 or Sony ZV-E1 because they would open up creative avenues for me to expand what I currently do, rather than keep me contained within my current area. But, that’s a big leap up to the £2000-2500 range.
      I’d also add that I’ve occasionally gotten hung up on making sure a camera is capable of quality 4K, but in truth I more commonly work in 1920x1080 full HD. The computing and storage requirements of working in 4K can be vast. I had around 6 months of producing nothing but 4K videos for RUclips and the storage space needed and rendering times were crippling me, and it wasn’t like I was short on space or computing power. I’ve gone back to full HD for now.

I don't know if this camera is maybe offered elsewhere with different settings, but I would have though if it had the ability to do both it would be an option available to all.

    Thanks for the nice review! It's really a struggle, I'd love to try and use it compared to my Fuji X System for video, but is it really worth it compared to, say, a Fuji X-S20? I doubt it :(

      I think its target audience has become a bit of a niche market. People aren’t using video cameras in the “traditional” way. I’ve had it for a couple of months now and I’ve used it a lot, and while it’s done some great things it has a couple of big failings that I struggle to see past, one of which I mention on the video and the other I only noticed recently.
      As I said on the video, it’s frustrating that all of the operational buttons are on the rear, so using it in selfie mode, or doing pieces to camera on your own, is more difficult than it should be. I mention in the video that it wasn’t an issue for me as I control it via USB-C from my computer.
      What I hadn’t realised at the time of my review was that it doesn’t output in 4K. It records to SD card in 4K, but you can’t transmit 4K over USB-C or HDMI. It only allows 1920x1080. I hadn’t noticed because I usually record in 1920x1080 for RUclips as 4K adds huge demands to system resources and storage. I wanted to do a 4K video last week and realised that it can’t do it over a connection to a PC. You have to record it to memory card, then transfer it to the PC afterwards, which is an added step in my workflow. And, you then go back to the problem of the controls being on the rear because I can’t control it remotely when I’m not connected to the PC.
      It’s a nice camera, but it’s got such a lot of little flaws. I think a DSLR/mirror less body type camera is the way to go.

      @@ToughMonkey thanks for your reply. Another question - was it possible to record 4k in 30 fps or only in 24 / 25 fps?

      @@felixvideoworkshop The camera settings only state 25fps for 4K 3840x2160 at 150Mbps. No other option is available, and confirmed in the manual that I downloaded from Canon. 25fps and 50fps are available at Full HD 1920x1080 at both 35 and 17Mbps.

    I doubt an iPhone will do 150MB/s video.... silly to compare.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  5 месяцев назад

      Not at all silly to compare two products that I have the option to use side by side in the real world. My reviews are never about lab tests or what a spec sheet says. It’s how we use products in real life and I base my views on my own real life usage as I can’t possibly cover how everyone else use video cameras. And nearly a year down the line of having the G70 I almost exclusively use my iPhone for video when out and about, while the Canon stays hooked up in my office. Optical zoom aside, for my particular usage, that works for me. So a relevant comparison.

      @@ToughMonkeyIt is silly, sorry to be blunt.
      A use case for a phone, which is most people, is so vastly different to the use case for a dedicated video camera.
      If you want an analogy, how about someone reviewing a Porsche GT2, and then saying, well, it doesn't have the comfort of my Ford Focus.
      They are not comparable (as it seems other's comments to stated).
      I mean, thanks for taking the time to make a video - but it's also a waste of people's time to watch. People seeking out reviews of a camcorder are not interested in a comparison with a phone. Makes no sense whatsoever.

      @@RockTo11 and this is my point. I wanted to illustrate that while it may be the camera you want, it might not be the camera you’ll use. I was interested in a proper video camera. I accepted the offer to review the product because I specifically wanted a dedicated video camera. And having spent time with it before doing this review, and in the subsequent months, it just doesn’t satisfy my particular requirements for outdoor filming. Yes it’s great for a lot of people but for me portability and speed of shooting on the fly outweighed the benefits of a full camcorder. I’m going to the US in a couple of months for a project that the Canon would be useful for, however all but a couple of shots can easily be done on the iPhone, with the versatility of pairing it with my gimball for shots the Canon can’t possibly do.
      I’m the first person to buy expensive stuff I think will be brilliant, when in reality I already had something that did the job perfectly well.

    Dead air! Not even one second of actual footage to compare. Just your own subjective views. What happened to to sell the sizzle not the sausage?

      Hi, thanks for the feedback. Sorry you felt that way about the video. The first minute and a half were entirely filmed on the Canon Legria, during which time I explain exactly what I use the camera for. There is little point trying to show footage on a video that is compressed down to RUclips standards and viewed on different quality of devices.
      My reviews follow the same format and are entirely subjective. That is the underlying foundation and why Amazon trust me to be part of their Vine programme. Opinions must be entirely my own based on my own experiences and not influenced by any external body. I will explain how I use a product, and what my experience was based on that use. I cannot speculate on the suitability of a product for activities I don’t myself use it for.
      Selling the sizzle and not the steak is a technique for selling products, not reviewing them. I get no financial incentive whatsoever. I’ll leave that to paid content guys.

      Thanks for the feedback. That’s not quite how the Amazon Vine review process works and nor is it meant to be by experts for experts. It’s regular consumers passing on their own experience to other regular customers. As explained in the video. I may not be the target market for the camera but it’s also likely you’re not the target audience for this video. There are countless other paid expert reviewers that will be able to give you the sponsored content you seek.
      Anyway, 9 months down the line with around 200 hours of recording using the Canon, it’s actually been a really useful camera.
