Camcorders are totally underrated. It is sad that dslr/mirrorless hype is ruining markets with bokeh and youtube. When it comes to unlimited recordings, no crops, no overheating, no anykind limitation, no need to change lenses all the time, a battery life and easy to change it, camcorder is a serious video machine. And what comes to low light. You have to spent a lot of money for glass that bigger sensor is better in low light. But it costs then a lot and comes with limitations if not speaking something like A7S3. But then it should be compared to cinema cameras anyway. Glad that some still understand this and many more other benefits of camcorders.
New generation don't understand what camcorders are. I took a Z150, GH5 and R5 to South America and East EU and what I ended up using was mostly Z150 because it worked and was designed to be used for that purpose. I still love and have my Canon XL2.

These are very underrated. We use the G30 & G40 for live streaming, weddings, corporate video, filming sports, dance shows etc.,and can’t fault them. I’d have no hesitation in adding G50 to our camera gear.
I have the HF G40, HD camcorder. I've made a few videos about it and I still use it from time to time even though I have other cameras including a Panasonic GH5s, which is incredible by the way. I definitely would like a newer camcorder. I was thinking maybe the HF G60, but a G50 might do as well it seems.... Great video though, thanks. Oh, one draw back that keeps me from using these cameras more is the dynamic range. And also the smaller bit rate makes it harder to adjust colours and such. So I just find you really have to make sure you nail it in camera.
Nice little review, Matthew. The XA series were gems, I've used the HF G40 for a few years. Doesn't do 4K, but the quality is superb. Trouble is, Canon have made mistakes with later models like the XA50 (only a 3" screen, and joystick moved to the left!). And they're not as well made as the earlier models. You have a good style of review. Thanks from the UK.
Matt, I agree with your opinion that these compact Canon camcorders are hidden gems among a mirrorless camera dominated landscape. I just upgraded from the XA40 to the new XA60 (3.5” higher res LCD and .36” much higher res EVF). I do mostly aviation video in 1080P/60 and the 627mm zoom range is just the tool I need to capture close up video from a distance! As you said, the lens on these compact Canon camcorders is a hidden gem! For my purposes, it’s a much better tool than a cumbersome, mirrorless “rig” setup. Nice review, you touched on all of the important point. I should mention that the “Low IFR…” video on my channel is the only one recorded with the XA40. I just got the XA60 yesterday, so no videos from it are on my site yet.
I have an XA20, and they're a great value for a prosumer, with 20x zoom (and an available zoom extender), 1080p60, 1080p24, "cinema mode", built-in neutral density filter, multiple types of image stabilization, a manual focus/zoom ring, assignable buttons and knobs, XLR mic inputs, Wi-Fi, and many other nice features. However, the footage looks a little bit soft and over-compressed compared to real pro cameras, especially in low or unusual light situations, and the focus ring (which is fully electronic) has mushy, imprecise response, and I would usually end up using the one-touch autofocus feature instead.
I have been using the Canon Vixia HF G20 for years and it were used each year since 2013 for School Graduation's, school competition and events, recording live Christmas shows, also live concerts and cultural shows, I sold it November 2022, battery still works, and camcorder still looks new. I was purchasing the HF G50, but I saw the HF G70 now released so I bought it on Amazon haven't got it, I live in the Caribbean so it will take 3 weeks to get here.
Yeah I agree, I picked one up at a pawn shop for $650 cash a few months ago. Saw it new at Best Buy for $1,400. Didn't realize the deal I was getting at the time.
Its hard to articulate, but i think outside of more hardcore creative endeavors like Feature Films/ Short films, Documentaries. or anything that requires shallow depth of field. Modern camcorders are more than sufficient. like filming for podcast, live events, live streams, news, documentaries. home video anything really The form factor also helps
Gotta say, I’m with you on this. My HF G70 is the best looking video I’ve ever seen personally. I have one pointer for you. Roll with the 4K. It’s much better than the 1080p mode for like… no reason at all. Also, messing with custom picture profiles is tricky, but doesn’t take long to figure out what’s going on. Colour matrix adjustments are tricky, but try going +15, +15, +10, +15, +10, +15 for a slightly “kodachromy” look, and then adjust the knee slope up by 10, lower the point to 85, it looks pretty neat.
I would have used 4K more often if I didn't care about bigger file sizes lol. That's why I mostly used 1080p but I totally understand your point, if you have the storage and the hardware to handle 4K footage definitely use it with the G50/G70 cuz there's no crop!
great video. camcorders are amazing. I shot 4 fiction features with them and received great responses from critics and theaters for them. super easy to use image making gear. great for indie fiction feature filmmakers.
My first camera was a VX2100, started out filming skateboarding with my friends. That got stolen and I got a DVX100B, also DV tape, but now with 24P! Two years later, HDV happened, so I ended up ditching my $2500 DVX pro camcorder for a more home movie oriented camera, but HD (kinda), the Canon HV40. Honestly, that HV40 might have been my favorite camera of all time, features to cost wise, which is crazy to think about. Then the DSLR revolution happened, and nobody wanted a camcorder anymore, but I still rocked one as much as I could, especially after I picked up the fantastic Canon XF100. That thing, and some DSLRs made me plenty of money! I ended up taking a break from video after 2015 for a few years, and when I decided to buy some cameras again in 2018 to do some simple documentary type stuff, I went for a 70D for more controlled stuff, and a Canon G21 for run and gun, instead of the XA10. The G21 is the previous 1080p only version of this G50 camera. My G21 has shot hundreds of hours of documentary/ENG type video, and made plenty of money. It’s only flaws for me are that it doesn’t have infrared, which I want mostly in case I come across Bigfoot, and it’s not the best in low light. Otherwise, it served me pretty well. With all that in mind, I would go for the XA40 or XA50, even though I’m frustrated that these l’ew cameras” are all just so-so quality 4K crammed into the same old bodies we had more than a decade ago. I would really want the XF605, though I don’t like the price at all, if I were to buy a 4K canon camcorder again. A true prosumer camcorder needs to cost $3500 or less, have good low light, infrared, two XLR inputs, and three lens control rings. That’s doable. And canon could do it by recycling the XF205 body, which is my favorite of them all, but the XF205 just came at the wrong time between the XF100 1080p and the demand for 4K. I’d probably buy a 4K XF205 in a heartbeat if that came out. It would need 4K60, at least, preferably 4K120, none of this regressive stuff like they did with the XA75, which is now 4K30 only, when the same camera body, the XF400, had 4K60 in it 5 years ago. Nonsense. All that said, I totally just bought hardcore into the Sony cinema line! Canon pushed me away! 😂 Maybe I need to call Sony and ask them to make my dream camcorder, since Canon just refuses to do it!
I agree, Bill! I have two Canon HV30 camcorders (same as HV40, but no 24P). I've had lots of other camcorders, including several more advanced Canon camcorders, but I think the trusty HV30 wins the award for my favorite all-around camcorder, features to cost!
@@craigw.scribner6490 something about the little focus wheel on the side made me so happy. That’s a camera body I would love for them to put 4K into. And the image was just so good. Good old organic DV tape.
I use both myself depending on what I am filming, over all you can not beat a good camcorder and microphone, I have just started using the HFG60 myself but have had ,Amy, canon over does a better package from my experience. The main advantage over SLR style cameras is the level of control in the zoom, you can zoom in and out smoothly even better still using a Lanc. I do also use a Canon M6 mark 2, for some fixed focus shots and events where it is more suited as the bigger chip can be ad advantage on such cameras, to get good results you are best not zooming while filming as you don’t have as good control as a camcorder and the focus tends to drift for a split second on slr style cameras.

Thanks for the positive review of the Canon HF G50 I'm having an issue with my Canon XA60B. My videos look fantastic on smaller screens like phones and laptops, but they appear overly stretched and grainy when played on larger TVs (55 inches and up). I'm wondering if there's a camera setting causing this. Can you help me troubleshoot?

They provide a lot of pro features for limitless filmmaking. I really love them. And yes, a camcorder can give bokeh too!!
📌 Nice video dude and nice shots. You are still a little awkward in front of the camera, but you are doing very well. It's ridiculous that there is so much focus on DSLR when it comes to filming when these cameras are primarily made for stills and quickly get hot while shooting video. We have recently started using the Canon XA70 here, which is fairly comparable in terms of body to the Canon HF G50. The specs are of course higher, but the price is also more than 2 times higher. We look forward to the next videos shot with your Canon HF G50. Very wise to use 24 frames instead of the 60 hype. It does indeed look cinematic with beautiful colors and razor-sharp images. The camcorder should receive much more attention for filming, because the DSLR is still less suitable for this. Our compliments for having the courage to bring this to your attention. Well done.
Very helpful, thank you. What is the main difference between the G50 and the G70? I see the G70 for about the same price as the G50 was when this video was made.
I have the requirement to document an extended road trip in Africa focusing on nature and wildlife photography where the end goal will be the creation of a sequence of RUclips videos to be edited on a desktop PC. I have looked at many options and a prosumer camcorder fits the bill as the one instrument with a wide range of functionality with ease of use operation. Based on affordability and availability my options are the Sony FDR-AX43 and Canon XA60B where my preference is biased to the Sony.
It’s a great camera, I use mine on almost all my video shoots. I also recommend it to a friend due to it having 2 SD card slots and able to use a external microphone. The color science blends well with GoPros and other canon DSLR cameras.
Agree with you 100%. I started as a videographer in the 1990s but switched to most still photography (crazy, I know). It seems like some guru determines the "thing to use" and everyone steps in line. I saw that with digital still cameras. You HAD to have full frame, you HAD to have double card slots, you HAD to go mirrorless, you HAD to have lenses that cost thousands of dollars.. and so on. Naturally, all of that was BS. The same can be said of the video. Yes, an expensive FF camera with a $3,000 lens is awesome, but a dedicated camcorder gives the user so much benefit too as it is dedicated and designed to shoot video. A while back I watched a RUclipsr talk about his new 8K camera for shooting RUclips videos! Well, I guess he had money to burn. However, I watch a lot of channels that are very well produced that shoot on an iPhone. The trick is to understand your camera's strengths and limitations and use good technique and an interesting storyline. The only limitation that I saw with your camcorder was that the lens could have been a bit wider so it probably wouldn't work as a blogging camera. Oh well. $1000 for a decent camera with tons of features and a pretty fast lens, sounds like a super bargain to me.
Hi there, can only support your view. Have been using camcorders for about 30 years, have never regretted it. Do not really understand this dslr etc. hype. Greetings from Germany
I own a Canon XA40 and if my house caught fire (G-d forbid) other than my wife it's probably the first thing I'm grabbing for! Thanks for helping spread the good word about camcorders. To do nothing but echo other commenter here... They're massively underrated (to each their own but I love our small tribe!)
If I had a 1000 I would get it. But I ended up getting a panasonic v770. It also has external audio and headphones Jack's. That was pretty cool for the price point. The color was a bit flat. But that's what color grading is for. Thanks for the video.
Update 1yr later I finally pulled the trigger and got the g70. I Had a mirrorless camera but was going down the rabbit whole with lenses. That can get very expensive over the long run. So I sold the mirrorless and went back to the camcorder.
it beets buying a bunch of pricey lenses and when your doing run &gun you do not have time to changed lenses. with my g7 i can not use a monitor but my canon vixia hf g-50 i can. plus they do not over heat.
all views of this and similar cameras end after viewing the sensitivity characteristics of 4.2 lux and 4k 25-30 frames. But looking through cameras with inch matrices and comparing the video from its ten-year-old canon hf g 10, which shoots more than the eye sees in the dark, you come to the conclusion that it is too early to change your camera from 50i.
Help.....Love your channel, nicely done! I have the HFG 60 and love the quality of film it produces, but i get a ton of noise. Zoom motor noise, and all kinds of noise onto my films...especially with low temps, or low light...not coming through my external mic, just the camera transferring it over onto the video. Suggestions??? I film hunting events a lot for people. My old Vixia 40 had no noise transfer?
I own one and it is a great camcorder...the way to go for video; but having to take out the SD card and load it into the computer is a deal breaker, and I wouldn't have bought one if I had realized the poor interface to the computer. Instead I use my Canon EOS R5, of which a person can download the video to the computer via a cable, along with having remote shooting with the lens view showing on the computer screen.
Most camcorders have smaller the 1 inch chip that perform very noisy indoors. Most consumers shoot short length footage and not 1 hour uninterupted footage so the advantage of camcorders does not make sense. At the other side the pros of bigger sensor mirrirless is better low lights, better dynamic range and more creative control by using different lenses. That is the biggist problem of the small then 1"camcorders. Manufactures should not make less the 1" inch sensor camcorders. This prosumers camcorders are only suitable for news report, journalism, education and corporate when streaming live events when you have control of light. Consumers are not buying them any more. Even wedding videographers are moving away to mirrorless cameras such as Panasonic GH line m43, Fuji X-H line, Sony FX-line and Canon R5 (if you can overcome the overheating). It is funny that majority will accept overheating before accepting a less then 1" sensor of a camcorder.

I actually used to have the hf g40. I got it in I think 2017 and used it all the way up to 2021. It’s the exact same camera as the g50 just didn’t shoot in 4k. I bought it to film action sports with and eventually got kind of tired of the look of it. The g50 seems like it has a better image to it I think. I sold mine and ended up buying a canon sl3 since it’s a smaller dslr that canon makes. Easier to take on vacations and camping trips. But I actually have my own channel where I check out old camcorders as well if you feel like checking it out 😊 youtube.com/@brandonalldredge

Well done.
Thank you I appreciate the feedback!
really great review man, looking to get the G70 soon.
What external microphones do you recommend?
I'm thinking about making a video on this topic very soon!
Is the onboard mic omnidirectional ? Another way of saying is the onboard Mic sufficient 🤔
Images are really great 👍 i have a camcorder (Sony fdr-Ax 53). Thanks for shining some light on this camcorder. New sub btw 👍🏽
Been using the G40 since it came out. Literally my only complaint is the display. Everything else has been great.
Getting a like from me, i support the camcorder. Much love, best wishes. Holmen.
Thank you man!!
It’s a great camera, I use mine on almost all my video shoots. I also recommend it to a friend due to it having 2 SD card slots and able to use a external microphone. The color science blends well with GoPros and other canon DSLR cameras.
Just ordered the g70
Absolutely I couldn't agree more 👍
Hi there, can only support your view. Have been using camcorders for about 30 years, have never regretted it. Do not really understand this dslr etc. hype. Greetings from Germany
I have the HF G40 and love it. I got mine refurbished from Canon. I think it takes better videos than my DSLR.
Thank you for making this video. I have been struggling with focus and wasn’t aware of the focus peaking function!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching 😎
a good review Matt, It's really nice camere, I'm a fan of Panasonic HCV 770, but your model sems to be very good proposition for film makers
Thank you so much! $1000 might be kinda steep for some people but honestly with the features you're getting in the camera it's so worth the price.
Is there any other high zoom cameras other than the Panasonic intelligent 90x? Looking for a better one
I have the Canon XA50. I love it!
Great video! I shoot on my Sony ax53. Gotta love the zoom for wildlife
I'm a 16 year videographer & photographer, good video!
Im debating this or the g60 since g60 has larger sensor
FINALLY found someone else who also believes in camcorders, besides me! Coincidentally, also have this same model!
great review brotha!!! exactly., if one like how the camera shoot and functions, Use it.
Great. Camcorders are cool and fun.
😅That shredded headsail on the sailboat at 12:55, I lived through that disaster.
I’ll shoot Canon XF405 and i love it !!!
What’s a good a shotgun mic that works well for this
Just what I was looking for
That really makes sense 🤔
Great review. I’ll be using it for video podcasting
Thank you!
Thank you for the review and video
If I had a 1000 I would get it. But I ended up getting a panasonic v770. It also has external audio and headphones Jack's. That was pretty cool for the price point. The color was a bit flat. But that's what color grading is for. Thanks for the video.
Update 1yr later I finally pulled the trigger and got the g70. I Had a mirrorless camera but was going down the rabbit whole with lenses. That can get very expensive over the long run. So I sold the mirrorless and went back to the camcorder.
Great video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you I will try to!
iTS A GRATE CAMERA, I HAVE FILMED MOSTLY MY FILMS ON THAT CAMERA.
Outside of getting it used I imagine there shouldn't be any benefits in getting this model instead of the newer g70 right?
The G70 is a bit more expensive and you're getting pretty similar specs. I'd say maybe go for the G50 but thats my opinion.
Well the g70 is out at this point so I guess you'll have to buy that one and do a review
This camera, apart from recording in 1080p and 4k, does not record in 2k (1440)????
it beets buying a bunch of pricey lenses and when your doing run &gun you do not have time to changed lenses. with my g7 i can not use a monitor but my canon vixia hf g-50 i can. plus they do not over heat.
Exactly!
Camera has good colour.
I still use camcorders I used a Panosonic Hc v
Thanks Matt
all views of this and similar cameras end after viewing the sensitivity characteristics of 4.2 lux and 4k 25-30 frames.
Excelente video thanks👍
I can not power on Camera if cable not put in cahregr? Why?
It should be able to run without the cable plugged in. Unless your battery is dead then you should charge the battery until full.
good job
Máy quay canon đẹp quá. Việt nam không có bán.
Check out my test on my Canon XA50: ruclips.net/video/r2N4LoCS3kg/видео.html
24 or 23.98 fps?
The latter
GIVE ME THE GIFT I'M THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Me watching this & I just bought the G70 😅
Lol do you like it? I didn't even know they came out with the G70 model. The G50 suits all of my needs for now at least.
@@jollygreensnaps so far so good ! I actually wanted the G60 it was 1699 new but I’m like ughhh !!! So I got the G70 for 1249+ tax after it came they posted a G60 used for 1300 I was very salty 🤣. The G70 came out in October . This is my first camcorder so I was like yeah it’ll be alright I love it though
@@jollygreensnaps I got everything from B&H photo . I want to get the eos r6 as well so I have myself a budget because camera equipment whew 😅
@@IamKenyotta That's crazy! I know dude cameras/camera gear can be super expensive, especially buying brand new. But I hope you still get plenty of use out of that G70!
@@jollygreensnaps oh yes !! I used it this pass weekend to document our family gathering . I’m happy with the purchase hehe . The main reason I wanted a camcorder was to document memories
geesh. how am I suppose to take this review seriously when the intro clip you're showing is not graded, exposed correctly has terrible underwater sound? I want you to either sell me this old camera with great clips or show me how terrible it is with bad clips.
Бро, а шо ты куришь?
What do you eat Matthew 🧟? Go raw vegan man
Used a HF G30 for almost 8 years for my sons channel @JoshuaMaldonadoCostas. Recorded most of his soccer highlights. Looking to upgrade to G60 or G70 next. Good stuff bro!
been looking for a camera that records more than 30min limit and there are none lol... iphone does no problem... crazy! camera companies really need to step up there game... camcorder may be good route...

@@mediamainenetwork I use adobe premier pro for editing and adobe express for graphics
