Since i started bowling when i was around 5 (30ish years ago), i was taught in the "old-school" shoulders parallel to the foul line. Ive always played within the first 10-15 boards for my approach, and i could never understand how pros would manage to get the ball to go so far right when starting left-of-center. It never dawned on me until this video. Yes, you want to keep your shoulders "square", but it should always be to your target and not just the foul line. I feel that staying square to the foul line is great for someone just starting, so they can learn to control where the ball goes easier, but you should pivot to being square to the target once you get a grasp on the basics. Since the start of this year i've been working towards knocking 10+ years of rust off my game by bowling regularly again, and your videos have been a valuable resource. from learning how to actually hook a ball with a weight block, to knowing what to look for in my ball fit, to mechanics videos like this that have helped me fix some problem areas, your videos always leave me feeling like a better bowler after watching them. keep up the great work, awesome video as always
I am working on this now. I just started bowling after many years off and remember being square to the foul line but I'm dropping the ball. I was told to open my shoulders more which has helped.
J R, dude, I should send u $50 bucks for the lesson, Holy shit I just turned my shoulders towards my target with my breast bone like you said, and it made an absolute world of difference, i bowled six games today and averaged thirty more pins a game, and my Accuracy improved a dramatic amount....thank you sir !!! U R the man !
been bowling since 10 and i still struggle with this which has made me play straight up ever since. i would love to be able to start moving left and open my angles and be able to throw the big hooks.
After much deliberation on this topic in my own game, I've settled on walking up the boards and opening the shoulders towards the target. If you look at launch angles for a bowler, most will be less than 5 degrees (which is swinging it!), which means 'opening' shoulders is necessary but not to such a high degree as we think. And it also means that with your arm in the backswing, it is about 3-4 inches of change (about a fist-width) from your arm parallel to the boards. I've always perceived a much higher angle (like 30 degrees), which meant a more open shoulder, but the math checks out.
This definitely helps alot. The past few months I have been really working on opening things up more. My consistency of not chicken winging is getting so much better.
I’ve been staying square and chicken winging and forcing my backswing. Then I really started paying attention to how the pros move there shoulders and chest. It’s kinda like roaring your shoulders in a golf swing.
Wow!!! I unconsciously worked on that last night. Shot a good 646. 2 clean games. Thanks. Just proved me I need to keep working on your tips. Love ya dude.
I've been told to keep my shoulders squared up to the line too. I felt like it didn't make a lot of sense when I was also told to aim at a board over to the right.
@@Tenpindoctors my mother was a natural at this. I had her move left for her 10 pin spare that she thought was wrong, but naturally squared up on her target instead of the line. That made me happy and she made her spare. We both bowled our highest game today too. Garbage scores for people like you but 170 & 110 were highs for us.
I've been trying this lately, and have jumped from 90s to 140s per game to 160s to low 200s. It definitely helps to aim with the chest. I've found that it has corrected my old "chicken wing" toss drastically.
I used this today in practice and shot 183 (bad ball reaction), 232, 270. Those are some of the highest scores and most consistent I've been in a while. Thank you!
I'm struggling with this right now as I'm working on training myself to open up angles I used to strictly be down and in and fairly straight but want to give myself options and open up the area that I can play but I keep doing what you just explained not to and every now and again I either pulled the shot or launched it into the gutter because of this
I’m assuming that you’re referring to using the arrows as the target. Would your angle to the target narrow if you used the break point as the target (strike ball) ?
If you need to go outside and open up your body, sounds like you need to drift slightly left in your approach for your feet to end up on the same board you started on. Is that correct?
Question, in this technique, are you pushing the ball out towards your target for a straight path or still pushing up the lane for more of a figure 8 power swing the deeper you play?
Since your breast plate, hips and feet are facing your target, the push away it "straight ahead" that does not mean "up the boards" you're pushing the ball out toward the breakpoint. The trick to learn here is to KEEP your breast plate pointing to the target until after you've released the ball.
Nice video thank you, btw, bowling was popular when it was simple, people like simple, now balls and conditions are not that, string pins ech, so nowadays its not something people want to join, rater be old and quit! The people that quit allways has a reason!
“Left handers moving right” 😂 Good one, JR.

Thanks JR, this concept just dawned on me the other day as I was attempting to play further left than I'm used to.
Glad I could help!
Very useful. Thanks for the video!

Absolutely. As we are learning we over exaggerate

What'll increase my accuracy is if my wife stops frackin calling me between frames!
Either find a new one. Or hit mute button

Thank you I’ve been dealing with this since the start of league it makes total sense why I’ve been so inconsistent now I have homework to do
A little practice goes a long way
If I miss my target, its usually left and it happens often! I'll give this shot, thanks for the info.

Yes yes yes you made this video just for me. That’s exactly what I’m doing ❤❤ thank you 🎉

Have been struggling with accuracy for months. Cant wait to try this tomorrow.
Good luck
Make sense 👌
Good to know. Definitely trying this next practice
Thank you for this . I tell myself to keep myself square to the line , what I should be saying to myself is to be square to my target .
Yes! Exactly
I feel like he was watching me practice today. This is literally what I was doing wrong. Thank you, Sir!
Happy to help!
And this is reason why I cross my body
Awesome tip!!

This is my issue, I start out throwing down and in but has the lanes dry out and I have to move left I forgot to open my shoulder up.
It can be tough to learn but practice and you’ll get it!
Thanks
Welcome
I am a left handed and I struggle with this a lot. Thanks for your help. Do you eve come to Utah for lessons?
Am I walking straight towards the foul line and squaring my shoulders with the target? Or am I walking towards my target in a diagonal line?
I was wondering about this also. What's the best/correct way, walk straight to the foul line, or walk towards your target?
Walking straight is best
Slide towards your target
Should you also be walking towards your target? Like how do you keep shoulders facing target without severe drifting towards said target
Cool video talk tech bowling Jr Raymond
Thanks!
@@Tenpindoctors your very welcome
Would the same apply for the dreaded ten pin… help. 😩. thanks
yes. Be aware that the angle is not as steep (far right) as you'd think.
What about footwork and lower body? Do you still approach perpendicular to the foul line and just align shoulders/chest with the target?
I'm struggling with this right now as I'm working on training myself to open up angles I used to strictly be down and in and fairly straight but want to give myself options and open up the area that I can play but I keep doing what you just explained not to and every now and again I either pulled the shot or launched it into the gutter because of this

I think this is why 10 pins are so difficult.
For some people yes. They don’t open towards the ten pin.
When are the rev rate videos coming out!?!?!
