My goal for this year is to focus on the plants I have as well and make them the best that they can be! I was super busy for a while and was slacking on my plant cares. But a part of me is feeling like the plants that step in line and can grow with my conditions without wildly babying them are survivors and make me so happy! I’m eliminating my “plant room” and moving them all out into the living areas in my house (with a humidifier but not crazy humidity) so I can thoroughly enjoy them without having to go into a separate room away from everything else. Whomever survives the slow transition gets to stay and become the strongest version of themselves!

    ferns back!!!
    1. is that a bloom on that hoya vine that kept tryna hug you? lol
    2. i have calatheas and i use a slow release fertilizer on them but i also add worm castings to my potting mix. my potting mix for them mostly consists of coco coir and some pumice since they do not like to dry out at all. and as far as lighting they prefer medium light rather than bright indirect. where they originate they are on the forest floor and surrounded by trees so they would get medium to dappled bright indirect.

I have Calathea warscewiczii for 1,5 and found 2 things about it. It can start her adaptation half a year later after buying it. And this period can take pretty much time. Don’t be scared, just keep caring and watching after her. Second and most important thing: it started grow as a beast when I made her wick watering. The leaves got much bigger and they stopped drying

Agree with other commenters that regular watering is more important than humidity with calathea. My house is currently at 35% and my calathea are all fine. But if I miss a watering, the leaves crisp up. At this point, I have most of them in self watering pots with a mix of Coco coir and perlite. My water is incredibly hard where I live, so I water with distilled water.

Hey, so Calathea tip I have is only used distilled, filter or rain water. I find that regular tap water causes it to crisp up and brown. And watering it regularly matters more than humidity. I try to keep good humidity but sometimes can’t pebble trays work wonders! Also most of mine like medium light. 🥰

True they especially hate the fluoride in tap water, I used to think boiling my water and leaving it overnight to diminish the calcium helped, but it doesn’t. I have a White Fusion and it crisped up like nothing else and got spider mites on top. It looked like it was on the verge of death. But after treating it for spider mites and giving the correct care it started pushing out new beautiful healthy leaves. It has even flowered for me 😊 For humidity, I like grouping plants together, I find this gives more of a boost to the humidity than any pebble trays.

With the subhastatum, keep in mind that the larger leaves usually don't keep the red undersides. I have smaller and bigger ones and the big ones are gorge but fully green. Mixed pot with hastatum looks great tho

The warszewiczii is also my favourite Goeppertia species (they've been reclassified as Goeppertia) but I haven't dared get one because the air in my flat gets so dry during the winter months. I do have two humidifiers running, but some days the humidity still sinks below 40%.
I do have a large Goeppertia insignis (used to be Calathea lancifolia) and it seems to be doing fine. I've had it for several years now and it used to get crispy leaf tips, but since I repotted it in a self watering pot with very chunky mix (coco coir mixed with a lot of pumice a little pon and some bark) all the new leaf tips have remained green. It seems like they need constant access to moisture in order to thrive. Especially in dry air.

    • @wildfern

No judgement coming from here. Your health comes first and I appreciate that you always keep it real.
Only tip I have for calathea is distilled water and humidity. Being that your water quality is better in BC than here in Alberta, you may not need to use distilled. Also, I’ve lost a few calathea’s to thrips, so I might start doing regular pest prevention on my calathea’s specifically.
As always, thank you for sharing your planty journey 💗

I bought a big jungle velvet calathea during the end of the summer . I discovered in five months that is a very finicky plant, I soak it every 8 or nine days and what I find is that she is very thirsty and the soil have to be always moist or you'll lose some leaves. I lost some leaves but she grew some new ones as well, the key is to keep the humidity high, specially when a new leaf is unfurling the soil must be moist and the humidity above 70% or it will partially came out crispy

For the calathea, I have a few and I would recommend hydro setup, my warscewiczii is super big and as I had it in soil it would suffer greatly because the stems are long and the leaves are so heavy it would just bend off, it happened to all my bigger calatheas unfortunately until I got them into hydro, rn they are just straight up in water and the stems are perky and stiff all the time, it also hepls to get a high vessel that can support the plant, like a big ass vase would be ideal!
I feel like they don't like being too wet or too dry, in soil it would always get over and under watered all at the same time... Now it's looking well and stable!

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  Год назад

Hmm interesting, interesting. Thank you for sharing! I might consider this. I am always nervous to transfer from soil to semi-hydro, but maybe it's worth the risk 👀

Hey Fern, glad your back and feeling better!! I have a few planty goals this year.. I'm an Alocaisa girl at heart (about 90% of my collection) I've been rescuing and purchasing some philodendron this year to test my skills. I've also started a new instagram account to encourage me to track my plants growing. I've also started some propagation projects for fuller pots. Let's do this :)

Let’s glow up our warzewiczii together! I’ve brought mine back from the brink a few times and it’s finally getting bigger. Then a cold snap damaged it badly. I think they want a lot more light…I acclimated mine to almost full sun and it did much better for me. I think the secret is light! Any of my prayer types get sad looking I put them outside and they always thrive. Maybe you can put it in your garden this spring?

i had a velvet calathea a while ago! it was a good plant- kinda moody for me but it was in regular schmegular indoor potting soil, nothing too fancy, and it did great for me! i think i killed it when i forgot to water it for a month, lol. they dont like sitting in wet/moist soil, but you cant let it be bone dry for longer than 24 hours or it will end its life. at least that was my experience. it likes bright indirect light, but dont put it 2 inches from the bright window bc the leaves will burn. i think thats everything i can remember lol
