    Watched this live, was such a great fight, absolutely devastating for this to happen to JDS. Full props to De Castro for recognizing the injury and trying to alert the ref. Also, yes the referee SHOULD have called the fight right away, because as Chael pointed out on commentary, MMA does not have injury timeouts for non-foul injuries

    • @Oakshield2
      @Oakshield2 2 года назад +18

      Agreed. MMA refs really feel like they're on some sort of pressure to keep the show going no matter what. I feel the same about eye pokes and nut shots, it should be an instant 1 point deduction, accidental or not. A foul's a foul and enforcing the rules would definitely reduce their occurrence, guys would throw more carefully and manage their hands better.

    • @ReadIcculus93
      @ReadIcculus93 2 года назад +5

      Ive watched way too much mma to know that they DO have injury timeouts in mma. Normally its only for cuts, but the ref can temporarily stop the fight to have a doctor come in to check a cut, to check a fighter's vision. The ref can then re-start the fight if the doctor clears the fighter. This ought to be the same principle applied to shoulder separations. If a fighter can spit out his mouth piece to get a Ref to say the word "Time", then they should do it for something that will have an equal impact on the fighter's performance. Fighters can continue to fight after their shoulder is back in place, why not let them?

    • @lonewolfpoetics
      @lonewolfpoetics 2 года назад +2

      @@ReadIcculus93 true, there IS timeouts, but technically there should NOT be lol. But yeah cuts are the exception, I guess anytime the doctor comes in would be an injury time out. But I think for something like this, the fight did need to be stopped immediately

      @@infinitemonkey917 not really, man. When a guy blitz forward, sometimes you can miscalculate the distance on a kick and it happens. But in the vast majority of the time, a nut shot occurs when the kicking guy doesn't have good control of his movements. It happens mostly with beginners. I fight on both stances and the last time i kicked someone on the balls was years ago.

    Boxer Danny Williams suffered a dislocated shoulder in a fight with Mark Potter. Williams' shoulder went back in, but it dislocated again shortly after. Williams fought one-handed with his right arm hanging down at his side and still somehow managed to knock out Mark Potter. Another case is Lomachenko: he won by KO despite his shoulder dislocating at the end of the 2nd rd against Linares. Lomachenko underwent surgery following the fight, but his dislocation wasn't as apparent as Williams'. Those are a couple of cases where the fight wasn't stopped.

      Danny Williams's KO of Mark Potter with only one functional arm was amazing. Another, similar case was that of the Olympic boxing champion Tyrell Biggs, who won a 10-round decision over Jeff Sims with a broken right collarbone suffered in the second round. (Shortly thereafter, Biggs lost to a prime Mike Tyson.)

We had to drive 1 hour back to the island through bumpy waves and then when i got to the urgent care they only had 2 employees and made me wait outside for 45 minutes because they had a patient inside. They finally got me in and drugged me up a lot and were able to pop it back in. Fair point. But what about an eye poke? That is not technically a timeout like getting kicked in the nuts in MMA. It’s just a grace period basically. I know one takes longer but they are both injuries that can be debilitating. I mean Bisping legit has 1 eye.

    • @MrRazmut

      @@TheRedAnvil40 an eyepoke is a foul, there is an exception for fouls in the rules where if you get hit with an illegal move, you have up to 5 minutes to recover. Since injuring yourself throwing a punch isn't an illegal move by the opponent, you need to survive to the end of the round. Then they can maybe put it back into place between rounds. If you just hurt yourself and fall down during grabbinh your arm during the round, that's a TKO, you got hurt and stopped fighting

    I did this while working construction and it tore the labrum of my shoulder. It would happen easily after the first time. I dislocated it six more times in a year before i got the operation to fix it. I wouldnt recomend continuing the fight.

    I personally dislocated my shoulder throwing a punch during an amateur fight . It didn’t stay dislocated like JDS tho. I think it was more of a subluxation, but later the same day, I lifted my arm to wear a sweater and it dislocated for real.
    A month after, I fell with my arms extended and that injured shoulder was dislocated bad. It was very difficult to reduce it and the ambulance came in.
    After that second dislocation, I had 4 more playing tennis, laying on my stomach and trying to catch my cat.
    I had a surgery for a very damaged labrum two years ago and I never experienced a dislocation again. But I’m still very fearful ever since.

    My left shoulder was dislocated playing football in high school. The lineman coach had me bend over, let the dislocated arm hang, then had me make circles with it. First circle it went back into place. Does this method have a name?

    Is it possible to dislocate your shoulder without knowing? Because I had to have surgery to fix my torn labrum but I don't know what caused it and the doctors always asked if I had ever dislocated it. It was torn about a quarter way around so I would think I would have noticed a dislocation and the pain from it.

      This is just coming from student PT so take it with a grain of salt. I doubt someone in a normal situation could go more than a few seconds without realizing they suffered a shoulder dislocation (One that didn't just go in and out;even then most people would have noticed it popping in out). Even if pain isn't a factor, your mobility in that shoulder would be significantly impaired wherein you would notice right away that something is wrong. How'd your labrum tear? My guess is as good as yours; people can come in with herniated discs and not have back pain. So it's really hard to say why/how you got an injury without any probable causes/events.

    I've dislocated mine initially, stopping down at a basketball as someone was attempting a dunk. It's happened atleast 10 times various angles, some I couldn't reduce bc I was lying down, 5 of which I reduced myself. I know I need surgery but I'm terrified to do so. It's been about 6 months since my last dislocation, in slowly trying to strengthen my shoulder joint, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I always remain as calm as possible, reminding myself to breathe deeply, when the muscle begins to spasm the pain is awful. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

    If you notice, the punch was deflected at a weird angle due to him hitting the other fighter’s arm. This sudden change in direction and his forward and slightly downward body momentum it just popped. Probably a little hyperextention.

    I was filming a commercial for a friend and threw a punch into the camera which dislocated my shoulder. After that my shoulder has dislocated about another 10 times. I’m absolutely due for surgery, but if anybody’s dealing with the same issue, there is a good way to reset your shoulder back into place tuck your elbow into your rib cage and then push your hand into the center of your chest. That should immediately put the shoulder back in place.

    Former bjj and mma guy and current wrestler. I’ve had 3 shoulder surgeries for anterior dislocations and I’ve wrestled about 20 matches with the injury. It should absolutely be called. Risking more structural damage that is irreversible. Plus the athlete with not be able to defend themselves properly against high level opponents, which is another detrimental injury risk

    This happened to me during a fist fight I had at a bar. I threw an overhand right and dislocated my shoulder as soon as I did that but luckily I knocked my opponent out cold with that punch. My homie had to pop it back in place while the guy was sleeping on the floor in his own blood. Prior to this I have had 4 shoulder surgeries. 2 on on each arm. Surgery didn't do anything but make it worse.

    They couldn't have restarted the fight because if you take an injury that causes you to have to time out (not caused by a foul) that is ruled as a TKO. You must make it to the end of the round and have the injury sorted by the start of the next round to stay in the fight. Sometimes fighters will have dislocated fingers fixed by their corner and keep going but you can't really survive till the end of the round with your shoulder out.
