These boat flywheels can be very stuck!
****The flywheel key has to be installed and you HAVE TO TORQUE the flywheel nut to the proper torque spec or it WILL shear the flywheel key and cause engine damage. Look up the torque spec for your outboard engine online.****

I find myself rewatching this video every summer just to to make sure I'm up to date. Matt your channel has helped me get my outboard running great now. Over the weekend I pulled the lower unit and installed new seals. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
I feel like I've already seen this. But never the less I love making my own tools. Something very satisfying about it. Good job
That's great. I'm at that stage right now on 150 . Have no holder. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome, works great!
@@MattsShop Gonna make one this morning. Thanks again.
Thanks for the tips. Love that tool you made looks like a winner !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, it is a winner! Still works today.
That bed frame is doing work
have all other tools making a flywheel holder tomorrow, as I need to replace my trigger
looks like what I need to try unseize my 1986 9.9hp sailmaster... gonna try tomorrow ;)
Awesome! Making one soon.
This may be a dumb question Matt and tell me if it is I have to replace the voltage rectifier on my 88 evinrude 150 xp and to do this it seems I gotta remove the fly wheel so after I do a nd it back on do I need to set the timing again on the motor or should it stay the same if I mark the fly wheel and put it on in the same position
The timing isn't supposed to change when you remove and replace the flywheel with the same one. I check it anyway, be careful if you have to check it.
IT has a key to line it up the same
Great video. The OEM manual list using OMC gasket sealing compound. Can I sub Permatex 80019 Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant for this. Also this might be a stupid question but I didn’t see this addressed in the manual-does the sealing compound just go on the threads of the flywheel nut? Thanks
Hi Matt! The flywheel can only goes on one way, right? I have an 1989 Johnson 70HP rebuild by Coastline Marine in Florida. The rebuild cost $3180. (rebuild include: bore the 2 bottom cylinders to the next larger size piston. replace the top piston for cylinder 1, rebuild carbs, new thermostat). The guy told me to check the ignition and timing by a mechanic. I have called every marina in Boston area to have them check the timing for me but no one is willing to work on older motor so I have to check the ignition/timing myself. I have watched RUclips videos bought 2 manuals to do the timing/ignition myself. When I check the TDC of the motor, new TDC mark that I've found is 2.5" to the right of the factory TDC. If the flywheel was installed incorrectly than that explain why it 2.5" apart and vise versa if it was installed correctly it should be 1/4" to 3/8" apart. Am I correct? Please help. Thanks
The flywheel only goes on one way. You have to make sure the flywheel key doesn't fall out when you do this. When you check the timing pointer you have to use the piston stop tool and make sure that you rotate the engine the way it says in the manual. It can be a bit confusing. Don't adjust it until you are sure though or you'll be in trouble.
Piston Stop tool??

I have a evinrude 2000hp v6 and the fly wheel its very stuck! What can do for remove it?
Pb Blaster soak while harmonic balancer puller is keeping pressure on it. Might have to let it sit overnight.
Well, I know you gotta do what you gotta do....But, you really should use the OMC puller and hardware on these big flywheels. Using alternative tools can easily result in broken hardware and possible injuries... That being said, your welded up flywheel holder is very cool....
This thing works great. No one has money for all those fancy tools lol.
Hi Matt, when I went to check my timing, my new TDC marks are about 3" ahead of the cast-in TDC and retard marks. No marks for advance. It's a late 70's 140. Im starting to think my flywheel might have sheared the key to be this far out. I guess I should just go with the new TDC marks I made. Does it even matter if the flywheel is way off as long as the marks are right, or does that mess with the charging system if the magnets pass the stator poles at a different time? Thx
You have to get a service manual and double-check everything. If the flyweel key sheared, it'll probably never start till its replaced. You have to check the TDC marks with a piston stop tool. It's a pain, but something is wrong if they are 3" off. I wouldn't try to run it like that. Would be worried.
@MattsShop HI Matt, thanks for the reply. I made a puller and removed the flywheel. Sure enough, sheared key. Replaced the key and idle went from 2,300 to 500 rpm. Need to adjust the throttle cable now. Water constantly flowing out the two exhaust ports at the back. My thermostat kit just showed up, so that's next.
What size socket?
I have a 91 200 HP Evinrude. the socket was a 1 7/16. I had to shave it down with a angle grinder, but works great after that! Also, I mimicked your flywheel holder and was excellent. Easy and cheap. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad it worked! That size socket sounds right.
Why did you start in the middle of the job? The question was how to remove the flywheel cover. You jumped right on removing the flywheel. What did you do, beat the cover off with a hammer or what. You missed several steps that have to be done before getting to that flywheel on a 1997 Evinrude. This does not appear to be a 1997 model
This is a 1986 Evinrude 150XP there was no cover on the top of the engine.
I need the part number for the flywheel key on a 89 evinrude xp 150 do u know what it is
www.boats.net/catalog/evinrude/outboard/150hp/e150stlcem-1989/crankshaft-amp-piston
Part number 7. Make sure you select the right outboard model at the top of the page.
What size socket is it
I have a 1988 jhonson evinrude 200hp looper which had 36mm bolt
