    dude, I just have to say, you totally saved my ass with your videos... I have a 92 Johnson 15hp that needed some tlc.... I'm no mechanic, but I do own a service manual and am not stupid... but there are things that I would have NEVER known had I not watched your channel... I especially loved the video on cheap water pump kits... oh my lord, what a difference the factory parts make!... and while all the fish I'll be catching this season won't thank you for your help, I certainly do,,,

    Love you videos, a few years ago I picked up a 1981 60hp Johnson with a bad stator Ring, I dumped it in paint thinners for a month and eventually got all the epoxy off of it, I then bought new laminated transformer wire and rewound the charging coil and stator coils, I was spot on with the amount of windings to get the correct resistance, I then varnished the whole lot and installed it, it still works, here in SA Johnson parts are hell expensive if you can even find them.

    The power pack 100% is easy to check with a $20 DVA adapter and a stevens load adapter! Not sure why you are saying you need to do process of elimination here. These packs should put out 150-200v cranking. you then do the test without the load adapter and if its low, you know its an ignition coil not the pack. same goes for charge and sensor coils. extremely easy to do with the correct tools. Without a DVA adapter you are shooting in the dark! 84' and up had the open stators, no matter if it was manual or electric. i just convert these to open style if the big green stator is out. not spending $400 on a new one when ones from 9.9 -60hp work even better.

    Let me throw a curely one at you, please. I have a 78' johnson stinger 75hp, and after about 10 to 15 minutes of running at speed, it drops down to probably 1500 rpm Max. It drops down slowly, too. I thought it was fuel, so I have replaced all the lines and fuel pump. No joy, same shit. Both pots firing, and at trolling speed you wouldn't know there was a problem. Any ideas ? Love your work, brother.

    Hey man, working on a 2002 Johnson 15hp and have a pretty erratic misfire. Changed plugs, replaced the entire fuel system. So I’m going down the path of electronics. I’m watching you test your stator and your getting 454 ohms, mine reads 840. Is that okay still? It does fluctuate when I spin the flywheel by hand. Just don’t want to throw a new power pack at it as I have no sources for used parts here.

    interesting you talked about getting that resin out. IT CAN BE DONE lol... baking at the correct temp and it liquifies. The diode that dies in these and the older metal framed packs costs about two dollars. put a good one in and it will never die again. :-) Learned that with the 500 dollar packs from the early 70's.

    • @NotAMartian-1
      @NotAMartian-1 4 месяца назад

      @@SarasotaBayOMC100%. There’s no other reason for the prices. I’ve got 2 motors, a old 1977 Johnson 15hp and a old 1989 Johnson colt 1.2 hp. The impeller for the 1.2hp is about the same cost as the 15. I’ve got a family member with a mariner 60hp and their impeller is about the same too. All 3 are different sizes which should mean different prices due to amount of physical material used.
      That’s just one example.
      And unfortunately these companies know we need either the parts or a new motor so there’s really nothing we can do about it unless we just all buy from china and force the change.

I have exhausted all my contacts with no luck finding anyone with boat motor knowledge. I have done carb kits and have reinstalled, new starter, starter selinoid, plugs, fuel pump, and I'm now working on replacing the coil packs. I am having trouble finding any videos messing with coil packs. I have replacements, but the plug wires are too short. Can I just cut those and join that cut wire to appropriate length plug wires? Or I have seen some other coil packs that you install your own plug wires I to them. Can I just twist out the factory installed plug wire and screw my longer ones in?

      Switch the trigger wires going to the coils; see if the problem moves.

    So, how about this challenge... I've got a 1997 Suzuki DT115, 2 Stroke, No Spark on any of the 4 cylinders. I've checked from the battery all the way to the CDI Unit, it's getting voltage to the CDI but the plugs aren't sparking. I'm at the assumption the CDI has gone bad but, the boat ran 2 fine 3 years ago and has done nothing but sat until I got it ready to fire up this year with new fuel and a new battery and its my understanding a CDI usually doesn't go out just sitting so, I pulled the CDI in hopes to get it checked at out local boat shop but he didn't know how to do it so, how should I be able to test the CDI Unit? Multimeter? PS the reason I want to make certain its the CDI UNit is because the CDI Unit is very expensive, I've found them for anywhere from $1700 to $2300 New old Stock and $200-$500 used.

      has to be an issue with a ground or the stator putting out too much voltage. is it pull start or electric? There is a charge coil on the electric start models that is not tehre with pull start. IF electric I would start at that charge coil that is supposed to keep the battery charged up and also look at all your grounds, If there is paint on the post you are grounding to.... remove it to bare metal.
