Thank you! This video saved my duck hunt on Saturday. We hunt on a lottery system so I get very few opportunities. At 4:30am in complete darkness I had no idea why the motor wouldn't start and your video amazingly showed in my Google search. Perfect. Awesome. Honestly words don't do it justice. This couldn't have been more perfect.
You make something complicated seem pretty dam easy. Love how you explain what something is doing, how it's doing it, and WHY it's doing it without making your audience feel like dunces.
Simply Outstanding! Thanks, my neighbor is new to boating and is having trouble starting his 75 Evinrude. He mentioned turning a red valve and it would start, he probably doesn't know about pushing key in for cold start. He's gonna be happy for this info, great job!
Stu ..Thanks to your videos a 25yr old issue is resolved. Pulled off the primer solenoid and found a worm of gasket material plugging the fuel inlet side of the primer. Cold starts are no longer an issue.
That's the same exact primer that I have on my 1989 Johnson Evinrude 70 horse VRO and now I better understand how it works and what I may have to do to repair it in the future! Thanks so much for your videos you are a great teacher and thanks for sharing your knowledge with others.
Dude! U got a great peaceful no nonsense style which I appreciate! Makes your explanations so palatable to me! Got that little primer kit from Sierra followed ur instruction and bam... sucker started right up! I thank you... my wife thanks you... my neighbors thank you! I've been making lots of noise trying to fix my 40hp and now everyone can sleep late!! Thx again! Keep their heads ringin!!
@@DangarMarine Thank you, Stu, for a great video. My question is: I don't hear the click when I push the key in. Does that mean the solenoid needs to be replaced, or can I clean it and put it back? Second question: I turned the lever up to bypass the solenoid and the engine started much faster, but left lots of gunk in the props. Is that because I flooded the carburetors?
This video was perfect. Mine is leaking when I squeeze the primer bulb on the fuel hose so now I know to order the rebuild kit. Thank you Dangar. Sending gratitude from Florida 🤙🏻
Thanks Stu. I just did this fix on my 1992 Johnson 70 which seems to be a great engine. I was able to simply unscrew and reuse the top, leaving the two hoses on the small barbs attached so as to not risk breaking them. Slid the new diaphragm in place and my "choke" works perfectly now. Wouldn't have know what to do without you. Thanks so much! Think I'll get some Dangar merch. with the money I saved.
Stu, you are a legend!! That little red part is cracked on my engine and leaking fuel when choked. I was wondering what it does and how to fix it! You've answered everything and given me the part no., thanks again I will order the part from your link.
As always, excellent work Stu. My engine education was locked in a 1980s time warp when butterfly chokes were the only gig in town. Thanks for the update.
My 25hp johnson was running like crap as well. Doing this asap to get back out on the water. Amazing how a quarter ounce plastic switch can make me lose sleep! Damn near sold my motor for parts like a damn fool!!!
Thank you for posting all these videos on the Johnson 30! I am fixing up a motor and have watched every video you have made on this model. I couldn't have done it without you!
I have been having big issues with starting... So had my carby cleaned and still issues... IMO you have just told me what my issue is... I am surprised my mechanic did not do this.. to eliminate a possible reason... It certainly is not a complicated job... Many thanks , will ask my mechanic to do this ...
I have never worked on an outboard before. I now have an Evenrude 115 that won't start. I did notice that gas was leaking from the primer solenoid so I will tackle that first. I have worked on Automobile engines and lawn care engines so have some experience. I wouldn't tackle this, but your videos makes me want to push forward. Thanks for your very detailed videos.
Another great Tutorial... even to the extent where this Gentleman places his hand near to the lens for the camera to refocus onto the part number packaging... Great for budding home handymen who need knowledge but not necessarily experience.
I just picked up a boat with a 30 horse Johnson that uses one of those. This was my first boat so I was unfamiliar with the setup. The guy I bough it off of had the primer in the start position and I didn’t know. Took the boat out the other day and caught the motor on fire. The genius used cable ties to hold the fuel line on, and the combination of that and being in the start condition caused the whole line to spray fuel by the pump. Luckily got the fire pit before there was damage. Definitely an interesting maiden voyage. Thanks for the info
Leaking from solenoid sorry wasn't too thorough on comment I was going to order a BPR fuel pump repair kit thanks your very wise and patient in videos your time is appreciated by myself and many others I'm sure. Thanks again
Love these kit videos. Things to learn about cleaning, lubing and pressure testing before reassembly. Can't wait for the lower unit, how to align the gears. Needed for every kind of boat!
I may be 5 years late but thank you so much for this video! I just recently have been getting into my old 1990 Johnson 115 and I was passively wondering what the hell that part was and why it had a Schroeder valve and why there was no choke in the carburetor, and then this video showed up in my feed and answered all my questions.
Excellent video Stu. I have one of these on my evinrude 48 SPL. I love the Schrader valve feature. It makes winter fogging easy as pie. I had no idea that these primers were completely rebuildable. Since I haven’t ran my 48 in awhile, I’m going to be checking it over and doing maintenance and repairs in the spring. These johhnyrude (Johnson and evinrude lol) videos will be a big help!
Being new to the boating world, I've learned so much from you about my new to me Johnson 50 HP. Thank you so much for your efforts, you are a wonderful teacher.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Now I know how to test my solenoid. I suspect mine may be bad because the motor is very hard starting. Once it's warm, stars like a charm. I'll update this. Well 2 days later, it's fixed. My motor had been hard starting for quite some time. It looks like the ignition switch was the culprit. It wasn't making a good contact anymore when you push it to choke it.Seeing as I didn't have a new ignition switch handy, I decided to install a separate switch for the ignition solenoid (I used a doorbell switch $5.00). It now starts great. THANK YOU.
Fantastic explanation for many of us with this type electric fuel choke solenoid. THANK YOU very much! Your ability to give such a detailed and clear description is extremely helpful. I will definitely subscribe to your channel.
I am so happy to have found your channel, me and my dad bought an old pontoon with one of these johnson 28 engines on it, surely gonna be using a few of your videos to learn how it works and what might need to be replaced.
Thanks for the detailed description. I accidentally had this open and it was causing the motor to run too richly. I had always thought it was an off/on switch for the fuel.
Gold Stu! I wondered what that red arrow was for and now I know. Also a huge plus to know how to make sure it works. Thanks heaps. From Stu.. in Brizzy.
Very well-done video. Straight forward, covers the details, nice job. I especially appreciate the "hand behind the small stuff" to get the camera to focus correctly on it (lots of people don't do that and we get blurry close-ups). I am having problems w an Evinrude 225 with what appears to be this exact same device and now have confidence I can go inspect this part adequately for proper operation. Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to make and publish this video.
Last summer I had a flooding issue and I thought it was the carburetors, I live in the USA and I bought a new plastic portable fuel tank and it has a one way valve that won’t let air out so it swells up like a balloon and floods the carburetors. Just thought I would share this Incase someone else could be dealing with flooding issues. Thanks for the video looking forward to seeing the carburetors rebuild.
You don't mention the symptoms for a bad primer solenoid in this video as you do in most other parts videos. My Johnson 40 HP runs fine after priming but it loses syphon after a few minutes. I've bought a brand new fuel tank, I bought a brand new oil tank (all from Marineengine.com, thank you) rebuilt the carbs, rebuilt the VRO, bought a new OMC fuel line and primer bulb. I can't figure out why it stalls after 3 or 4 minutes, leaving the primer bulb almost dead empty?? It's a 1997 Johnson 40 Model J40TELEUC. Ideas welcome :) Love your videos, you've gotten me through more repairs than I'd care to mention. Thank You!
Thank you for explaining the upgrade to the red knob ! I just bought a boat and it will need a service kit for the primer and I have been looking for one that didn't have the end piece ! Now I know im good to go !!! New sub !
Just great as always! Thanks for not starting your videos with the " I'm going to show you......."line. Very nice work Stu,the best show on the subject, can't say it enough .
Awesome video M8. Very well done. Thank you for taking the time to explain how things work, and how to fix them. I love your Country, the People, and the culture. I appreciate your wisdom and advice. Keep up the good work, and God bless you Brother.
I have a 98 ocean runner 175. tough cold start, smelling fuel. Once warm it starts 1 crank. I'll look into this before plugs. Changed fuel filters and ran seafoam already.
Thanks for all your help I just got my grandson a 1996 Johnson 28hp SPL yesterday and was trying to figure out how to choke it Now we know. Thanks again
Ok, I have that same primer on my 1998 johnson 115hp and have now eliminated starting problems. The key switch/primer actuator is too hard to coordinate using at same time with that configuration. It's not like a choke on the key switch where there is more forgiveness time if you let off. Anyway here is what I did and I start first crank every time. I disconnected the primer solenoid wire behind the key switch, (sorry I forgot the color, but it's simple to find color by looking at the solenoid itself) and ran it along with a power wire to a foot switch in my floorboard, I used the momentary gator switch that Academy sports sells for use with a hand controlled trolling motor. Now after making sure the primer bulb is squeezed hard, I hit the floor switch maybe a dozen times and with the high idle kicked up to start , I engage the key switch to start with the foot switch held down. It starts right up and stays running, I then slow the idle now appropriately and maybe pump the foot switch until I feel sure it's gonna stay running on it's own. Believe me there are alot of people that have complained about this , (start up) and with me it's history now.
Thank you for the great explanation. My motor is a 1996 Johnson 25hp two stroke and it only has one nipple on the plate of the solenoid. It looks like the other nipple broke off but there is not a hole there, just solid plastic...also only one outflow fuel line hooks up to it...Ever seen that?
Hey Stu, I'm reading in some forums where the primer is on the motors, that you should turn the key to the on postition and then push down for 8/10 seconds before starting. Unless you tell me different, gonna try this next time out, as cold starts are somewhat aggravating. After you get it warmed up, the motor is great (115hp 1998 Johnson). I mean it's a cold natured motor in summer also. And yes , I always make sure primer bulb is primed . Thanks Stu!!!
It's my understanding that these primers don't do much unless the engine cranking. They need the fuel pump to the operating to push fuel into the engine.
Ok. Thanks so much for the reply. I'm going tomorrow and will try the procedure, I'm reading about in this forum (making sure bulb is pumped tight and holding key in , in the run position, for maybe 6 to 10 seconds) and see if it makes any difference , and I'll post back and let you know. Here's the link where I read about it www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/534519-evinrude-115-starting-issue.html Thanks again Stu!!!
Follow up. Yesterday I went fishing, made sure the bulb was primed tight, went to the ignition, put in run position , held the key pushed in for 10 seconds and the verdict was. No difference in doing that way. It didn't change anything and was exactly as you said,, needing the engine to turn over and the fuel pump to feed it fuel. My personal preference would be the old fashioned choke flaps without a solenoid, and using a cable to activate, so you could put choke in whatever position you wanted.... Thanks again , Stu!!!
Great video as always. My solenoid passes the ohm test and works when connected to 12v battery. The power wire to the solenoid gets the same voltage when key is depressed. Yet when the primer is attached and secured it doesn’t work. I’ve tried improved ground already. Stumped.
i have rebuilt that part on my 30 hp Johnson it's electric start and the other week i was wondering how i could choke it if i had to pull start it of course i can't push in the choke and do the rope wrap manual start so this makes sense as how to manually choke it. Thanks another great video.
Man very information video. I have one of this on my boat 115 hp 1993 Johnson. I accidentally turn it and didnt know which way was the correct way so I came to this video and BAM!! I will save this video incase I need to rebuild like you. Thank you.
Thanks, I just brought home a new to me 1997 Johnson 70. I believe it has the same primer. You totally informed me on the system. Thanks! I am looking forward to the Carb kit video... thanks agian
Hi Stu, first of all good catch on the pin flying out. My primer on the merc is metal and still works good. With my work money I have been making decided to take the boat in today and have it dyno tested and tuned up. Will let you know what they find. He said in most cases they can get them running good but once in a while it needs to go in the lake. Three Rivers Marine is highly recommended in this area
Would love to do a video but Kurt won't be in till Monday for servicing and I'm still working till the end of April. I plan on doing videos soon after. I'll ask Kurt if I can do one then on someone's boat and share it with you. Dyno tune sounds very interesting in the test tank. He said he can go WOT too.
Awesome informational video. Would it be possible to post the starting procedures for this setup. I have a 1994 60hp Johnson. I'm told a few different ways to start my outboard but would like to get this right from the beginning. Cold start and warm start please procedures please. Thanks again. I subscribed!
Thank you for the amazing video packed full of very useful information. Man, you put together a great tutorial for troubleshooting. I had a bad ground that I found by testing the ohms going through the Solenoid.
very informative video, thank you I drove 50 miles to the lake today and the engine never started I think this is my problem and will be out there tomorrow morning 'again - thank you

Just thought I would share this Incase someone else could be dealing with flooding issues. Thanks for the video looking forward to seeing the carburetors rebuild.
Thanks David, it's interesting how often motor troubles can come down to simple things like the breather valve in the tanks or the primer bulb etc.
Howdy Stu; Another fine learning lesion. Easy to understand even for me. Thanks so much Mate, Cheers !!*****. PS. Hope Eddie is doing well.
Thanks Angelo, glad you enjoyed. Eddie is fine!

Ideas welcome :) Love your videos, you've gotten me through more repairs than I'd care to mention. Thank You!
It sounds like either sucking air through a cracked fuel line or a close breather on the fuel tank meaning a vacuum is being created inside the tank.
Thank you for explaining the upgrade to the red knob ! I just bought a boat and it will need a service kit for the primer and I have been looking for one that didn't have the end piece ! Now I know im good to go !!! New sub !

Thanks for all your help I just got my grandson a 1996 Johnson 28hp

Had no idea what it was or how it got current. Thanks.

Ok. Thanks so much for the reply. I'm going tomorrow and will try the procedure, I'm reading about in this forum (making sure bulb is pumped tight and holding key in , in the run position, for maybe 6 to 10 seconds) and see if it makes any difference , and I'll post back and let you know.

Great Video! Exactly what I needed to see to repair my Outboard.
Glad it helped
i have no prime solenoid or outboard engine .... still like watching your vids Stu great info..
Thanks Darren, glad to hear you still enjoy the vids.
Thanks for posting. This video helped me fix my Evinrude 28 myself.
Great video as always. My solenoid passes the ohm test and works when connected to 12v battery. The power wire to the solenoid gets the same voltage when key is depressed. Yet when the primer is attached and secured it doesn’t work. I’ve tried improved ground already. Stumped.
I'm having same issue.i love boating
Found problem with some corrosion in big plug connection under cowl. Cleaned the connections dialectric grease and solenoid works now.
Very Straight forward, thanks for the info on all things to look for besides the solenoid.
Thanks mate, glad it helped. :)
Thanks for the Video. Helped out a lot. You are very good at explaining what it is you are doing, and how the parts work.
Thank you stu for your help learning about my boat engine
You're welcome Robert. :)
Dangar Marine hi stu can you reinstall auto oil mixer for 140 evinrude is it worth doing.
I am new to outboards and was wondering what that was and how it worked, mystery solved! Thanks Stu!!
You're welcome. :)
Another excellent video, Stu. Great job!
Thanks Andreas.
Great demonstration!
Thanks Matt!
Dangar Marine You're welcome.
You rock dude. You have saved me so much work with your videos. Much Thanks !!
Thanks mate, glad the videos help!
i have rebuilt that part on my 30 hp Johnson it's electric start and the other week i was wondering how i could choke it if i had to pull start it of course i can't push in the choke and do the rope wrap manual start so this makes sense as how to manually choke it.
Thanks mate, glad the vid helped you.
Hey Tim, would be interested to hear how you go with the dyno tuning of your boat. Very interesting! Will you do a vid?
Would love to do a video but Kurt won't be in till Monday for servicing and I'm still working till the end of April. I plan on doing videos soon after. I'll ask Kurt if I can do one then on someone's boat and share it with you. Dyno tune sounds very interesting in the test tank. He said he can go WOT too.
...think I just ran into this problem today...
Amazing how's things show up when you need them
Great video👍🏻👍🏻
Great video! I have an 77 v6 140 Johnson with the same primer. Good to know how it works.
great to know there is a rebuild kit a new solenoid is 248.00 thanks very much...
Again! An exceptionally clear and informative video. Thank you
Awesome informational video. Would it be possible to post the starting procedures for this setup. I have a 1994 60hp Johnson. I'm told a few different ways to start my outboard but would like to get this right from the beginning. Cold start and warm start please procedures please. Thanks again. I subscribed!
This was really informative. I’m learning a ton from you and I’m very grateful for your wisdom. Thank you!
Thanks Lauri!
Thank you for the amazing video packed full of very useful information. Man, you put together a great tutorial for troubleshooting. I had a bad ground that I found by testing the ohms going through the Solenoid.
Thanks for this video. I've been looking for a good video on these devices and haven't found one... yet! My old 1988 Evinrude 88 SPL thanks you!
You're welcome, hope the vid helped you! :)
Thanks for this video! Just ordered the parts to fix mine that is leaking.
Glad I could help! :)
Awesome stuff as always. Keenly awaiting my new DM t shirt to arrive. 👍
great video stu. i noticed the ignition switches being flakey/loose did not know they had a push in contact. no wonder they are so expensive!!!
Thanks mate. There is quite a bit in those ignition switches with the lanyard cutoff as well. At least they are easy to change!
Very nice video. Not often you find a great explanation video
Damn, the old Johnson/ evinrude. Don't particularly miss those days with the 2004 V4 carb!
Arn's V4 is certainly a cranky old motor.
This video has been so helpful Thankyou so much for this
You’re welcome mate, glad it helped you. 😊
Great video the one on my 1990 48spl doesn't work was wounding how they worked before trying to fix thanks for the information
