I have 20-inch hair. The longer it has gotten, the bigger the parts I use. I find that this reduces the handling time. No mini anything on my head anymore. I don't have that time to waste. I support my fine stands with yarn (which I moisturize before use) so the hair does not clump on itself. It also helps to keep it stretched and makes the takedown easier.
my issue with larger parts is that I don’t like the look and I also get lots of matting particularly at the base which ends up being a tedious detangle
@@CoilyDiaries I feel you. One strategy I have used is to divide my big braid into 3 parts, braid the individual parts at the bottom to about 1 inch then merge the three into one big braid to the end. That way, most of the undoing is on the big braid. But the bottom is well secured from matting.😜
I kinda get what she’s saying. Take a big section of hair and divide it into 3 separate sections as if you were going to braid them like a typical 3-strand braid. One at a time, braid that individual section starting at the root and stop after about an inch, and then do the same with the other two sections. Once you’re done braiding your three individual sections, you’ll gather them all together as if you were doing your individual braid with 3 strands and braid them all together. I believe that is what she meant by saying that the bulk of the braid was the three gathered sections. Imagine the reverse. You unbraid the larger gathered braid, and then you have your three individual braided sections that only have an inch that needs to be unbraided beginning at the root. Hope that helps and didn’t make it more complicated. 😵💫
You are so real even with your shed hairs😮. Thank you for not making us dream but showing us the reality of the natural coily hair in our day today life; how to care for it and show it love even in our busy schedules🙌
I just took down my three months old corn rows. I saw length. my hair could even be packed one. I washed and deep conditioned every 10 to 14 days, while using leave in conditioner and glycerin and petroleum jelly and during wash and deep conditioning days. I am so happy with the length. I just installed a mini braids yesterday and I will take it down in 2 or 3 months time while repeating the process. Thank you
I homeschool, am a full time homemaker and home gardener. I have a daughter with lots of thick hair as well. I don’t have time to be in my head all day so I now put my hair into 4 braids with 2 twists in the front to frame my face after I wash. Washing every 2 weeks keeps the hair from becoming matted and keeps the shed hair from building up. This will make your process so much quicker. You can remoisturize once a week if needed. I braid my hair while it’s still wet to the scalp so it dries neat and flat. The style looks really cute with the braids pinned up or with a triangle scarf over it. You can also wear a wig over it if that’s your cup of tea.
Girl, bravo!! 👏 You did great! I already expressed that I feel you with taking care of our hair and having small children, especially if we want length. It’s no joke! The days of hours in your hair and then being able to just get some rest when you’re done are over! 😅 For me, I literally have to take my braids down once a week, moisturize and re-braid because…I just can’t afford a big take down after 2 or 3 months. The time it takes is too much. But doing it every week when I moisturize my hair allows for it to go much faster. I’m also still postpartum shedding I think, so the amount of shed hair that would get trapped will add much more time to taking it down. This works for me right now, and I can still get the benefits out of protective styling. Your hair looks amazing!! Looking forward to seeing how you roll after this eye opener! Hugs Sis! Great take down. I don't have small children, my son is 21 and away at college for most of the time, but I don't have patience for long take- downs. congratulations Doc!!! so proud of you sis!! seriously it’s a lot for me at this stage and I think the length throws a whole new spin on things. hope my journey will bring some hope
I wish I could have helped you because you looked so tired 😢. I've gone back to washing my hair weekly to make it easier one week, I wash it in braids. The following week I just took my time to take them down and I oiled my hair to ensure my fine strands didn't break. I just watched something relaxing, my hair isn't as long or as thick as yours so it was a lot easier. I enjoyed your process. Do you think your hair grew?
Help!🙋🏽♀️🤣🤣 I think it grew but only by a little bit. Thing is I only pulled down the hair I showed you and 2 months is only 1 inch or less of growth so I’ll give the challenge some time for me to see tangible length!
@@CoilyDiariesOk. I know it didn't work for you but I've noticed each time I wash my hair the growth speeds don't ask me how 😂. I'll let you know how I get on, I want to get to armpit length by the end of the year.
Well done! I am also on a mini braid challenge, do you think it would’ve been better to re-braid the hair after one month in order to prevent the matting at the roots? I am on 3 months challenge and also trying to figure this out. Thanks
I totally understand! My hair isn't as long as yours, but it's long enough to cause everything you're going through, plus I'm 60+ years old. If I cut my split ends, I'll have a tiny weenie afro and my hair is way past my shoulders. Been natural since 2015 with 4D hair 😢.
That's why Rev 21:3-6 is so encouraging. If you can find the best 4c detangling spray sold in your area, it may help with the take down. Corn rows may be best for styling with a bun and adding hair accessories or add-ins for versatility. Distilled ACV(and 100% aloe vera juice mixed in)is like a natural relaxer. You may use it as a rinse straight from the distilled bottle, then use your moisturizing conditioner while the ACV is still on the hair. Leave it in for 15 minutes or so, then rinse with lukewarm water. (You can use alkaline electrolyte water in a spray bottle for more hydration) then moisturize, leave in conditioner, detangling spray and oil before corn rows. (Softee aloe vera curl activator gel with glycerine was good for me to use with wearing corn rows to keep it moisturized) Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing 😀 👍🏾 💐🙏🏽💜
Oh the things we do for length🙃 You dislike the style that you’re in for months and dread the takedown because it leads to exhaustion🥲 Is focusing on doing styles you enjoy more often out of the question? You already know what it takes to keep your hair healthy. So you’d realistically still see growth, even if it’s not as much due to more styling. So why not just enjoy the length you already have so that you don’t start to resent your natural hair? Either way, I hope you find a routine that makes your natural hair journey enjoyable. I’m rooting for you and your mane!
I took down 3 months old braids, yes, I made another one. Braids keep the hair stretched longer and moisturized longer. My tip: Using okra water for take down detangling. Cheapest detangler in the market.
It’s insane that takedown has taken a week. Especially with larger braids (relatively speaking). After 5months, it took a day and a half to take down and detangle. It’s fascinating how the experience can be different for everyone
If you are doing it all in one sitting then yeah can be done on the same day or so but considering my moisturising and stretch plus interruptions. Plus not willing to sit for hrs removing hair in one go 🤷🏽♀️
From what you said, how about doing this same method at 5 weeks? Wash at your usual month timeline, then moisturize and within a week later do the takedown. Just an idea 😊
Having long hair is fun and beautiful😊 but one this i make myself aware of is the fact that its not always going to be fun especially during takedown moments like this. True, It can be overwhelming and tiring🥱 sometimes but I like to see it as self care so I take the time I need even if it has to be for 2weeks.
😭😭 I shouldn't have watch this video! But you are soo right. I shared my almost 6month mini twist journey and the take down and put it was soo tough at that time. (Mom of 5). I'm currently installing mini twist again. Almost finished.... much quicker than the time I shared. But now I'm sooooooo nervous for take down. 😬 I'm definitely not going over 4month this time.
Nice job ma'am🙌 In my case, as a high porosity hair babe, my hair will go back very dried like a dried chin-chin before that 7 days if i don't loose everything within 3-4days😂😂
i think that natural hair that hasnt had shed hair removed for 2 months will always be this difficult. but for naturals who remove shed hair more frequently this isnt much if an issue and not as much time will be spent
Wow, I feel relieved after seeing the amount of shedded hair u got after loosing that hair. I feel relieved because I loosed my hair last week Wednesday after two months of carrying corn rows. I joined the three months protective style challenge. Anyways, my hair grew thicker, fuller and longer. It did shed but not too much tho but u saw improvements. I was so happy. I also noticed I have of knots on some part of my hair. Please what do I do about it? Should I leave it?
I did that too and the frustrattion was the same....3 months was too long and i did twists...so a month to a month and a half is a sweet spot...esp cause i don't redo them
Interesting take down. Learning how to do my own hair has taught me i need to take my time. I can relate to the dehydration part because i noticed the first time i installed butterfly locs i barely drank anything. I thought my headache was from the install but looking back i think it was a combo of both.
Guess when I take down my braids, I'll watch this video while doing it. I'm currently on braids but I intend to put in a new set on the first day of May so as to start the challenge afresh and I'll leave it in for two months,if I can I'll push it to three that's IF 😅And mehn our hair is quite demanding 😂 it takes a LOT to cater for our type of hair and MAJORITY of us do not have the patience it takes to be gentle. Honestly 😅 I'm tempted to say that natural hair is hard especially when natural hair RUclipsrs are like, " natural hair is not hard, its as easy as you make it." But I try 😖 I try but still the hair is still demanding 😢😢 Like see how long it took JUST to detangle 🤧 Ahhhh nawa ohhhh 😂 It is well ❤️🩹
@@davitatukura2520 it’s hard. Got a video on this coming and I can already smell the hate am gonna get for saying it’s hard but I like to be honest with myself 🤔
@@CoilyDiaries yes, people will definitely hate on it. But the brutal truth is our hair type, this coily, kinky strands we've got is not for the weak. It's NOT easy. It takes WORK. It demands patience. And lots of it. Sincerely it's much easier to work with a straighter curl because it's straight! It's not coiled up and hugging themselves like our hair does. I tried to tell myself that natural hair is easy and I tried to work with that notion and truth be told, it's not that easy 💁. It requires paitence, gentleness and commitment to take care of natural hair. Which is why some become straight naturals or relax to tex-lax it for ease. So mehn I don't judge no one. Being a natural, I've had a painful journey but I've stood because I DECIDED to stay natural. It's not easy my sister 😂

Hi there hello 🤩 mam my hair now is at a length of 6 cm and 9 mm but on the eye straight of the bat every body's gonna think my hair is around about 4 cm and that's why suddenly every body's gonna say my hair grows fast but that is not the case
We be growing our hair why can't we just keep going with the progress that we are privileged to have by all means make it easier we know our mind set's we love long hair so perhaps look into relaxing one's hair soon as we cut it we miss our hair
Yeah 🧗 I've always been growing out my hair and it's never been a real longtime that I spent on my hair I just gotta just let my hair be it's truly a struggle to have short hair and it's never looking in place one will still have to put in the effort regardless of short hair so what's the point in cutting it I think one should trim and not cut one's hair maybe for a event or ordeal don't throw in the towel now mam☕
More shedding of course its been awhile but it looks really good. why are u not interested in the Raina conditioner it seemed to n make the take down easier with the bliss conditioner?
I think it was the combination of all the products plus heat and I used ALOT. any leave in will do. Reina leave in is also a custard so curl defining. I would try look for a leave in that doesn’t enforce the curl. blueberry bliss might be a good one but will do a comparison next time
@@CoilyDiaries I see since u stretched the hair u definitely don’t need the curl emforced …. haven’t really thought to as yet . too expensive especially that am trying to rid myself of other products and encourage a simple routine with minimal products. Am in Australia too so the shipping costs would be crazy. I might in the future though will see.
Perhaps trying less braids would be easier? Or less time in the braids. I know several people who have great success with going only a month at a time.
I wonder if smaller braids would’ve helped with the take downtime? Or maybe taking down at 6 weeks instead of 8 weeks? Any, great video, I’m going to experiment with plaits and see where my sweet spot is in terms of takedown and upkeep 🫶🏿

There are some nights where admittedly I sleep hot and I have to remove BUT most of 365 nights I have my bonnet on. Plus I use products and some oils and I need to save my pillow cases. Luv u Sis!
@@lashawnabrady7063 thanks for sharing this. What edge control do you use?

I might not be a mum but I'm in medschool and at first it was easy but I'm in my final year now and I just CAN'T 😭 I'm so busy and always tired. Now my hair got longer so that makes it worse. I can't even plan to do it during end of semester breaks cause I have stuff to do then too ....my scalp gets unbelievably tender also so I need a lot more time. Can't imagine what it's like for you. Sending lots of love♥️ hopefully someone has an idea of what we can do!
congratulations Doc!!! so proud of you sis!! seriously it’s a lot for me at this stage and I think the length throws a whole new spin on things. hope my journey will bring some hope
Thanks
I feel what you feel dear.
😔
You go, lady, great results 👏🏾 !
Wow! Are yo looking to grow it out?
Girl, fantastic job with that takedown!!💜 I don't know how you do it, because I surely could not.
🥰🥰🥰
(Softee aloe vera curl activator gel with glycerine was good for me to use with wearing corn rows to keep it moisturized)
Hope this helps.
Thanks for sharing 😀 👍🏾 💐🙏🏽💜
thank you for the bright ideas!!
This protective style series is 💎 look forward to watching the wash day part 🎬🍿
Thanks so much sis 🤗
Oh the things we do for length🙃 You dislike the style that you’re in for months and dread the takedown because it leads to exhaustion🥲 Is focusing on doing styles you enjoy more often out of the question? You already know what it takes to keep your hair healthy. So you’d realistically still see growth, even if it’s not as much due to more styling. So why not just enjoy the length you already have so that you don’t start to resent your natural hair? Either way, I hope you find a routine that makes your natural hair journey enjoyable. I’m rooting for you and your mane!
well said! it’s time for a change of routine and habits
I took down 3 months old braids, yes, I made another one.
Braids keep the hair stretched longer and moisturized longer.
My tip: Using okra water for take down detangling. Cheapest detangler in the market.
thanks for sharing but DIYs are too time consuming for me at this stage
Thanks for sharing, sis. I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks so much🥰
It’s insane that takedown has taken a week.
Just an idea 😊
nice idea… thank you 🙏🏽
You are not exaggerating at all. I am mostly exhausted anytime I take my braid down, wash days, and styling.
such hard work!
Having long hair is fun and beautiful😊 but one this i make myself aware of is the fact that its not always going to be fun especially during takedown moments like this.
True, It can be overwhelming and tiring🥱 sometimes but I like to see it as self care so I take the time I need even if it has to be for 2weeks.
good for you! this didn’t feel like self care. more like a whole week of labor
@@CoilyDiaries 🤣🤣🤣
Hi lovely, just asking is your hair low porosity please?
@@rachelrachoulusa1376 high porosity
@@CoilyDiaries thank you for answering
😭😭 I shouldn't have watch this video! But you are soo right. I shared my almost 6month mini twist journey and the take down and put it was soo tough at that time. (Mom of 5). I'm currently installing mini twist again. Almost finished.... much quicker than the time I shared. But now I'm sooooooo nervous for take down. 😬 I'm definitely not going over 4month this time.
definitely too much than I can handle right now
Nice job ma'am🙌
In my case, as a high porosity hair babe, my hair will go back very dried like a dried chin-chin before that 7 days if i don't loose everything within 3-4days😂😂
am high porosity too and I can go for 2 weeks with very hydrated and moisturised hair
I’m glad you showed before and after pics. Thank you❤ what are your thoughts? Will you go back to 2 strand twist instead of the braids?
I’ll update you on this soon
i think that natural hair that hasnt had shed hair removed for 2 months will always be this difficult. but for naturals who remove shed hair more frequently this isnt much if an issue and not as much time will be spent
true, the frequent handling of my hair isn’t realistic for me either
Wow, I feel relieved after seeing the amount of shedded hair u got after loosing that hair. I feel relieved because I loosed my hair last week Wednesday after two months of carrying corn rows. I joined the three months protective style challenge. Anyways, my hair grew thicker, fuller and longer. It did shed but not too much tho but u saw improvements. I was so happy.
I also noticed I have of knots on some part of my hair. Please what do I do about it? Should I leave it?
good for you! knots on some part of your hair???
@@CoilyDiaries yes
If you spray a apple cider vinegar and water on the build up it will dissolve the build up and make it easier to detangle
I prefer dry detangling over wet detangling
@@CoilyDiaries not wet just the part that has the build up touch the ACV on your fingers and rub on the build up only. Not the whole hair
I find cornrows are less matting than twist. Maybe switch to cornrows
Thanks 🙏🏽
Your hair looks so healthy❤
Thank you!!
Your hair is so full 😍😍🤩🤩. Tfs.
Welcome 🙏🏽
I did that too and the frustrattion was the same....3 months was too long and i did twists...so a month to a month and a half is a sweet spot...esp cause i don't redo them
we live and learn 🙏🏽
Interesting take down. Learning how to do my own hair has taught me i need to take my time. I can relate to the dehydration part because i noticed the first time i installed butterfly locs i barely drank anything. I thought my headache was from the install but looking back i think it was a combo of both.
true…
Before and after there is a difference in thickness but all is well ❤❤❤
Do you think it’s thinner and are you judging by the hair am pulling or the bulk of it?
Have u tried untangling with flaxseed gel? Its a game changer for me
I did on the past. I prefer aloe. Either way I be prefer this method above all else
@@CoilyDiaries thank you for replying back.
Gorgeous hair sis....
Thanks hun
Guess when I take down my braids, I'll watch this video while doing it. I'm currently on braids but I intend to put in a new set on the first day of May so as to start the challenge afresh and I'll leave it in for two months,if I can I'll push it to three that's IF 😅And mehn our hair is quite demanding 😂 it takes a LOT to cater for our type of hair and MAJORITY of us do not have the patience it takes to be gentle. Honestly 😅 I'm tempted to say that natural hair is hard especially when natural hair RUclipsrs are like, " natural hair is not hard, its as easy as you make it." But I try 😖 I try but still the hair is still demanding 😢😢
Like see how long it took JUST to detangle 🤧
Ahhhh nawa ohhhh 😂
It is well ❤️🩹
it’s so much work. in my younger years before motherhood I could handle it better but right now nooooo
@@CoilyDiaries I get it sis. I really do. Time is of the essence. There are other things to do and attend to. Hair can't be everything abeg 😂
You talked about a sore / sensitive scalp....i too have one....i recently just started getting sore on my scalp yet this never used to happen.......why does it happen?
@@CheyenneArinaitwe not knowing what your situation is. Maybe a change in routine or hair habits or products…
May rountie...or even growth.
I'm not sure but thank you for the insight
It seems postpartum shedding contributed to this much take down shedding. Or before now is this the same way your take down hair sheds?
I’ll be doing a video on this
Hi there hello 🤩 mam my hair now is at a length of 6 cm and 9 mm but on the eye straight of the bat every body's gonna think my hair is around about 4 cm and that's why suddenly every body's gonna say my hair grows fast but that is not the case
We be growing our hair why can't we just keep going with the progress that we are privileged to have by all means make it easier we know our mind set's we love long hair so perhaps look into relaxing one's hair soon as we cut it we miss our hair
Thank you for sharing. It’s truly an individual journey
But I wanted to thank you for all ur videos even with your little one it has helped me to understand how to care for my hair better I now condition moisture treat weekly and also do this before washing my hair has plumped up and become more hydrated thanks 🙏🏾 bunches

Perhaps trying less braids would be easier? Or less time in the braids. I know several people who have great success with going only a month at a time.
That’s an idea. Larger braids give me matted roots but might work on monthly rotation. Hate braids on me though
I would like to look. Cute while my hair is growing thus is just too much
very exhausting
That’s too much hair loss, but I guess you don’t have the time to grease during your protective style.
Like I said, I’ll do a video on this
This is better done overnight and taken down in the morning
ahahahh! lend me your strength!
I wonder if smaller braids would’ve helped with the take downtime? Or maybe taking down at 6 weeks instead of 8 weeks? Any, great video, I’m going to experiment with plaits and see where my sweet spot is in terms of takedown and upkeep 🫶🏿
Both of those options are still exhausting! Thanks though
