I'm definitely one of the "I want to go electric, but don't like Tesla" nice to see VW putting out good stuff
I have an ID.4 and I rented Teslas several times. While the ID.4 is a good car, Teslas are so much better that is not even funny. The technology and efficiency are much better. The SuperCharger network is incredible easy to use, EA, and other non-Tesla, charging networks are extremely iffy, at best. Doing a long distance trip in a non-Tesla, at least for now, is an adventure that requires a lot of patient and a bit of luck. Around town it is no problem if you have L2 charger at home. VW dealers and VW america have just terrible customer support for EVs. Now that both cars have the same tax incentive I would not buy another ID.4. Best luck.
Although I am not a fan of the new Highland Model changes, I got a 2021 Model 3 Long Range. It had a few problems, front seat plastic was pulled out, back light had moisture inside and the 12v battery ran low. All were taken care of by Tesla for free. So I have 0 complaints buying a used car and it runs like a dream.
Best of all I still have parking sensors so I am more aware of how close I am in the garage. Check out a used Tesla, the prices are dropping like crazy now!
Go to Carmax and find one to test drive.. or if you live near a Tesla service center, you can arrange a test drive there.
I was the same- even had an ID.4 Pro reserved at one point- but I bit the bullet and got the RWD Model 3. No regrets, in the US at least.
If you want the best EV experience, go Tesla, regardless of your personal bias, there is good reason why Tesla has been the best selling EV company for over a decade and the Model Y is the best selling car worldwide, even beating out a gas models. If you don't mind compromising on nearly every aspect of EV ownership, go with the VW.
@@2phonesbabyken You can pick up a cheap Model 3 2021-2022 AWD Long Range for around 39-40k now. Just find a low mileage and snatch it up.
The Long Range is great for the range, I made it from Virginia to SC on one charge. 288 miles going 70ish all the way. I said "I knew you could do it!" haha
We are certainly in a weird space where we can get excited that a car has manually adjustable vents and actual buttons on the steering wheel.
because software based features are not only safety issue they are a likely candidate for micro-transaction based features where the car can charge you to use them. BMW opened that can of worms and so did Mercedes. They want to charge to use features for hardware already on the vehicle, like heated seats. They do it because there are no laws against it yet.
Based on your videos, reviews, and love of the ID.4 we leased a 2023 PRO S RWD with the LG large battery last week. We're in our seventies, and my wife wanted the electric seats- so we went with the PRO S. After seeing this review of the 2024, my initial response was UGH!, should we have waited. On the positive side- presently, the ID.4 has some very attractive lease programs in NJ. The PRO (not S) was leasing for $299 w/$1999- plus fees, but those fees can be negotiated to zero. It comes with a free Blink HQ level 2 home charger, rebates on install, and three years of free Electrify America charing. We used the public charger the first time and did go to 100% since we're off for a long rode trip today. Thanks to you, we are aware of EV Public etiquette, and will not hog the chargers (LOL). The Federal and NJ Tax credits make leasing this a no brainer. The final price of the car was around $38K. Love Tesla- but would never consider. The new 2024 will probably be available after Jan 2024, so in NJ you may lose the credit since the program has a set amount of money. Anyway, much appreciation for you entertaining and informative videos. Thanks again.
Just curious, why would you never consider a Tesla even though you love it?
Not a fan of Elon.
NJ has no sales tax on EV’s as well. Why anyone in NJ with a garage at home (or the ability to charge at work) would buy anything but an EV, boggles my mind. It’s an absolute no-brainer.
Apparently the criminality of the VW organization regarding "diesel gate" was no big deal. Oh well. Pick and choose.
While out on bail, Carlos Ghosn of Nissan fled Japan and was smuggled out in a box.
Years ago, Marry Barra of GM lied about having more than two dozen EVs by now. That didn't happen.
Present and past CEOs going back over 100 years.
They're no angels.
The good news is that when your lease is up the next gen will be ready for you with even more improvements. :)
Watching some reviews from other channels, I noticed something really cool about the navigation system where the car knows what lane you are in, and will bug you to move over to the correct lane if you need to take an exit on the highway. It's a great idea that I haven't really seen others do, and I like how Volkswagen is adding these small touches.
As a past 2021 owner, this looks like a big improvement. I sold mine after 14 months because I was so aggravated with the software. I liked the form factor and styling of the ID.4, but day-to-day with it was painful and frustrating.
I might go back to the 2024.
I would say just get a model y. It is a whole lot better.
@@rishinarang9966 No
@@sprockkets why
@@rishinarang9966Software and charging aside, the VW is a better drive. It all depends on what your priorities are.
@@javier_plumey no lol. Just look at the reviews…
wow ID4 Software now is really nice! cant wait to test it!
Wow Kyle! A brilliant test drive with plenty of enticing aspects of the new ID4! Thanks a lot! Enjoy! Cheers, Tom
Not a total Kyle fanboy, but must give credit where it is due….He’s an EV “Rainman,” and no one I’d rather see get 20 minutes in a car to advise me in making a buying decision
Looks like some good, but modest updates. Love Kyle's style; he's such an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and upbeat personality!
I'd pick this over the Tesla Model Y for several reasons: its truly unbelievable turning circle, 360-degree camera, parking sonars, and wireless Apple/Android interface. If the US version comes with adaptive suspension and dynamic chassis control, I'd happily forgo the EV tax credit.
And lane centering is base
@@privettoliI was heavily annoyed by the lane centering system in a recent ID.3. I would let VW keep their cars for that annoyance alone. Constant nagging.
the VW is eligible for the EV tax credit. They build them in Tennessee
@@Jeroenneman I mean, feel free to disable it.
@@NCXDesignsIt's not a tax credit, it is a rebate. Big difference.
Love the "Charging Capability" display in the car! Wish all EVs had this feature!
Mercedes has it 👍
Isn’t this like if an ICE car told you that it can actually be filled up?
The one we've been waiting for! Thanks for posting!
Great video test drive. The updated car looks like a real improvement.
I'm sure Jan really appreciated the opportunity to learn so much about the new ID.4 from Kyle😂
I'm waiting to hear news that Kyle is being offered a high level job at one of these vehicle companies. He seems to know at least as much if not more than some of the people he's having convos with.
Nice to see the 2024 ID.4 has a 360-degree view camera.
Thanks for another one of your really good car reviews, keep up the good work. You are one of the best.
Great scoop, giving us advance info on corrections to many of the criticisms you had on the older ID4 models. Now going straight to the source! Germany is fertile ground for Out of Spec!
Exciting, complimentary information/ interview!
Commendably confident demonstration.
Thanks for the 2024 Id.4 updates vid!
Glad they are offering an HK sound sustem!
Every German: since when is Heckler & Koch in the sound system business? 😇
This ID4 is now a real product as it should have been from the start - sounds great! Sounds like they are really competitive now.
My id4 is on 3.2 rn cant wait for this update
Thanks, great review, just ordered a new one arriving in 3 months.... cant wait..
HEAT PUMP. Will the 2024 Chattanooga built ID.4 have them?
This will be deciding factor for me too.
@@SJSMALLSIs really not that big a deal tbh.
I was told that the fully charged show here in Vancouver BC by our Volkswagen dealer that he pumps are indeed being installed in cars shipped to Canada now. I can’t speak for the US but the builds we get are from Tennessee.
@@ScotMatheson Strange, the VW Canada website doesn't mention them as an included feature or option. They were initially included as an option in Canada for a short time and then we're discontinued due to parts shortages.
The dealership I’m working with in Vancouver said all their units are arriving with heat pumps
Thanks! My '23 awd pro S is about to be built. I don't think I'm going to wait. I barely road trip, and only in the summer.
I have been considering getting one when my current lease is up. Now I know to wait for the new version. Thanks!
Thanks, this confirms I'm much more interested in the ID.4 since the 2024 features were announced.
Bought a ID4 2023 AWD Pro S partly based on Kyle's & Makaylas videos. Love love love the car. Much better than my Forester in deep snow. VW - please give us the 3.5 operating system on OTA update!!!!!!!
I fell in love with new ID4, great job VW! :-)
Did you ask if 2023 ID4 will be able to get any software updates up to 4.0? Like how about programming battery conditioning for charging??
Ordered ours in Aug 22 and still in the queue. The dealer here in Vancouver,BC knows we want a 2024 model so will push back our order for spring 2024 delivery. I like all the updates and hope we see all of them here in North America. Thanks for the great video.
We ordered in November and want the 2024. Still has not been delivered so rather tell them to push it back for 2024.model
My 2021 ID.4 was in the shop getting some bodywork done over the last three weeks. I have been driving a Ridgeline, a Mustang Mach-E, and a Chevy Trail Blazer. I just drove a 2023 Plus model. Oh my god, do I miss my ID.4!!!! I'll be buying a 2024 as soon as possible.
The biggest barrier to EV adoption in the US is the wretched state of CCS charging. The Supercharger network is brilliant but Tesla is not for me as they do not make a small car.VW needs to bring the ID3 here.
ID3 GTX that will launched next year. Maybe that one will come to US, like there is no Golf sold in US but Golf GTI and R are sold.
VW needs to go NACS
Port isn't the problem
@@sprockketsIt isn’t the “only” problem, but EA is truly terrible and none of the other CCS networks are much better.
I agree. When I look at getting an EV I see there are no fast CCS chargers in the Lancaster Lititz Ephrata PA area. I don't think I can get there and back on the PA turnpike without having to charge once. According to PlugShare, there are Tesla Superchargers at a couple of rest areas and one off of Rt 222 but the closest CCS charger is about 50 miles away in Exton PA and is 10 miles or so off the Turnpike. There are some other ones closer to Philly, but they are also off of the Turnpike. If VW works out a deal to use the Tesla Superchargers that will probably be enough for me to get an EV.
Good "first look" video covering some of the long awaited updates. We have been seriously considering ID.4 but hesitated when we learnt about the issues with current models here in US. Glad to see the updates presented in this video. Living in the cold "frozen tundra" of the US, I am wondering if this "refresh" of the ID.4 includes a heat pump for more efficiency?
I'll let you on a little secret - every heat pump for cars is useless below freezing. They stop harvesting heat from the air and only get it from the car's electronics and battery. Don't believe me? Look up diagrams of Kias and other's setups.
You'll still get reduced energy usage with one. Just don't let it be a deal breaker.
The rear window button with 2 window buttons never bothered me.
Same! The few times I've rolled down the rear windows in my car were on accident. lol
Yep total non issue and I even use the rear window often
I have four switched in my car and so far have never rolled down or up the rear windows. 😂
No idea why it would ever be an issue.
Great video and very knowledgeable reviewer (Kyle)! I’m going to get a 2024, they are just getting PDI-ed here in the north west.
Nice to see that VW has made so much progress in the past couple years.
That's one way of looking at it. Another is the previous iteration was designed so poorly in the first place. Two window switches for 4 windows. What a clearly "in your face" example of cost cutting. Especially when people switch from car A with 4 switches to the ID4 with just 2.
They haven't. Their first product was just absolutely shit. Their "progress" is just VW finally releasing the actual car instead of the beta version that they let millions buy.
@@Jeroenneman well yes they did - they rushed a product to the market which was completed new for them, they improved it ever since now its the largest step. The beta thing - every new EV vendor went through this stage
Oh My! I hope this new updates come to America 🇺🇸 please please
They finally fixed most of the issues, well done!!
Fixed only for the new model year, existing customers are getting screwed.
I forgive all of your previous sins. This was the review I've been waiting for and you delivered. Thanks go to you and Alissa.
Great video review, as always, thank you Kyle!
On the other note, are you planning to do full review of Fisker Ocean? I know you did on pre-production vehicle, but I haven't seen any comprehensive reviews of production FO yet.
This actually makes me out the ID4 back on my list!
As others commented, is this software coming to my 2023 ID4? The different screen size (12.9 vs 12") is not a big deal. But the software IS a big difference!
I also wish our 2023 had cooled seats. But otherwise, still love our 2023.
I hope we get the software on the 2023 I.D. 4 I like my car but any improvement is always welcomed
Man… I love my ‘21 ID4 pro s AWD, but… VENTILATED SEATS! 😸 I might be cross shopping the refresh model with an ID7 😅
As allways, a great video.
Hoping to see your review of the Chattanooga produced 2024 ID 4. Can’t wait!
Great video. I love my 2022 ID.4 (my first EV) but the only disappointment is the lack of over the air updates, something VW promised in multiple written and video advertising. Perhaps this will finally be implemented soon.
But are they gonna take the existing fleet like our vehicles or hand wash and move on?
@@subbiahpalani The software updates are coming, but at least the id7 has a significantly faster board unit. So the gui will be faster but probably not as fast as that system.
Agree… I’ve had a 2021 & 2023 and never one OTA update in 3 years. Very disappointing.
Very hopeful this rolls out downhill at some point.
I have a 2022 id4, and have received several ota minor updates. In Europe which may make a difference.
Kyle, completely coincidentally, I discovered that route planning with automatic charging stops insertion now works on the 2022 AWD ID.4 still on the 3.1.0 software. The charging stops planning algorithm is not good; for example, it tells me to charge for 7 minutes at a 350 / 150 kW Electrify America, then drive for an hour and spend 1 hour and 7 minutes to charge at a 50 kW Chargepoint DC charger even when I tell it to prefer Electrify America DC chargers. But, all the pieces are present already, including the minimum SOC when getting to the next DC charger and the minimum SOC when arriving at the destination. I didn't notice these features in my ID.4's onboard navigation in the past. I literally discovered this new (at least in my opinion) feature less than 48 hours ago in my 2022 AWD ID.4 (Pro S with Gradient package).
Be wary it navigates you to RAN from time to time. As of now we still can’t charger there.
Every time you get into a Volkswagen with a new hw. The battery is always warm, but the car also has heating for the battery with a button and the car knows how long the heating lasts.
What about the REGEN? Has VW given drivers selectable regen, other than none/weak? This was a major factor in our getting a Kona electric instead: you can set the levels for each of the three driving modes. On ID.4, the regen was weak and there was no way to change that (ostensibly because VW was worried that people switching from RAV4/CRV would be freaked out by the deceleration). This is simply software-controllable, so I thought it unforgivable that you couldn't even change the level via a menu setting. The automatic braking -- er, strong regen -- is something many drivers quickly come to love. VW, just give us control!
Awesome vlog! I love the VW all electrics...what I don't like is that we don't get the Massage Seats, the Dynamic Ride Suspension and Heads Up Display, did I miss anything?
Please bring updated route guidance with DCFC preheating for all US sold ID.4’s. Please, SOON! Winter travel will be a LOT better!
Haha, who was the product manager in the car? I swear your knowledge is amazing, you really didn't need anyone in the car. Nice of you to ask the man a question here and there.
Generally, I agree, but the manager did answer a few important questions that people want to know without waiting for many months.
Ordered mine in this beautiful blue color. Can't wait to get it!
Not available in North America
@@ScotMatheson Too bad for you guys. I don’t understand why VW does that. You don’t get the excellent HUD either. For me it was one of the key reasons I opted for id.4 over Y.
Do we know if the older model ID.4s will be getting software version 4.0?
I still don't understand why people make sure a big deal about the number of window switches. How often do you need to control more than two windows at the same time from the same set of switches? Seems like a strange thing to be obsessed over.
VW will be changing these switches, but not in 2024.
Excellent video as always! I was really hoping you'd mention something about V2L, etc. Have you heard anything about that? It's one of the big reasons I haven't considered an ID4 so far.
Ventilated seats? Worth the upgrade for sure!
the 2023 Hyundai & Kia EVs have heads-up displays, unlike your current US spec ID.4
Fantastic
Really interesting report! It looks like a solid update, especially the new motor and sound system. But it's too bad the sound system is only on the top trim. Looks like the software problems are now in the rearview mirror. But, I've had zero problems with the software in my 2023 ID4, so I think most of the major software problems were already fixed. I wonder when they're going to bump up the battery size and/or offer the large battery in LFP.
I guess you started on 3.5 there which had fixed most of the very bad issues like you already suspected. 2.4 up to 3.0 was a very harsh ride :(. I experienced the crappy shit in the id.3 of my mother
Glad you were able to have a conversation about NACS, looking forward to watching that. Wish the controls on the wheel weren't piano black, ugh smudge magnets.
All colors get smudge you just don't see them and continue using smudged up keys. Yuk.
Interesting comment on the Q4. Great car and the adaptive works well. Since following you on RUclips I've purchased one of those and a Taycan Turbo. There were many things you liked about it. Now I question the accuracy of some of the information you are putting out.
The power increase of the RWD model is decent. Just wish the AWD had gotten boosted to around 400HP and they'd dumped the touch sensitive steering wheel.
the software update looks decent. lets see when we get our version in the usa. i have a feeling they will let us down like usual.
He knows more than the guide.
Just ordered the Style trim version in the UK, and looking forward to the first car on my EV journey.
So crazy how much faster evs improve in just 3 years lol. Motor, battery, etc all improved in the time we would normally get a fraction of that in a mid cycle "refresh". I love it, but this will absolutely torpedo the trade in value of anyone that bought one. Us ev folks have to either stay on the lease train or buy used and keep it forever lol
EV's are absolutely a lease vehicle right now imo. The tech is moving way too fast
Yep, hate to be one of those who bought the first version. It's no wonder EV's depreciate 30-40% the first year. But then again, most people are clueless on how money works and will die broke.
So - window controls .. Did the update to 4.0 make the ‘window goes the wrong way’ issue go away. It’s always good entertainment to put my ID.4 into 4-window control mode, try to close all 4 windows at once, and (1 out of 4 times) have 3 windows go up as requested and 1 window roll down.
Test drove the 2023 AWD model today and looking to test drive the 2024 on Monday. They are just doing the PDI on the first ones here on the west coast (BC, Canada).
29:00 Just a guess on the small battery but maybe it's a contract thing where vw is obligated to keep offering that battery size for a period of time, but sells so few of them that they're not willing to spend the money to bring the updates for it? Just speculating.
Kyle since just the 82kWh is getting the new Software for 2024 ANY chance you asked CEO about whether the 2021-2023's are capable of getting the Updated software (on the 82kWh). Really need the Batteyr pre conditioniing here in Minnesota. BTW if you look at car scanner big battery shows 77kW with 72kW available on the SK 2023. after testing though it appears that yes still 82 with 5kW upper buffer and they added / buffered 5kW bottom .
That said, I am getting 300 miles City driving (no ac ) driving Uber, 260 HWY
As soon i got the id.4 i traded it in, it was so damn bumpy that i was diagnosed with a head problem from my head banging
I'm seeing this as I'm about to buy a 2023. The MANY mentions of the new "responsiveness" of the software (which, to be frank, performs the way it SHOULD) really concern me now :)
great review!! any news on the updated Golf GTI MK 8.5?
Will the existing ID.4s in the US get the new software? The current one is pretty sub-par to put it nicely.
I wonder if the old models will be able to get new software update? and method of update (over the air or go to dealer?)
Is this 4.0 update coming to existing ID4s, like perhaps the 2023 models? It has so many needed charging features currently lacking on the ID4. If they don't, then I consider VW as a suboptimal product when compared with the competition as it doesn't even support NACS (good luck finding DC fast chargers in Northern New England, US). My 2019 Tesla Model 3 has gotten better over time due to the massive OTA updates.
Don’t hold your breath, we’re still waiting for 3.5.
Are we getting that color in the U.S.?! It’s fantastic!
That ID 4 certainly seemed to have more than enough acceleration to satisfy 90% of car buyers from my viewing of the speedometer. Very nice car but I think it may be out of range price wise to a lot of people, at least in Canada. All the tech talk is way beyond my comprehension. I think most people want to know how far a vehicle can go on a full charge and how much to charge from no battery to full or what can 15 minutes get me in miles or kms in Canada, just get home without too much waiting. Kyle certainly knows what he’s talking about and his wife, Alyssa, doesn’t seem to be lacking in that area either. 👍👍🇨🇦
Timed charging is a nightmare on my 2022 model. I'm due to drop it into the garage for a software update to sort the glitches.
You wonder how many current owners they drove away by not fixing dangerous problems with their software. It's a shame. I really liked that car when I drove it.
Kyle, have you asked the question about the 4.0 software update to current 2023 ID4 built in US. Is it going to be installed? Thx
Hopefully earlier ID4s will get the software updates!
Hi Kyle, thanks for all your info on the ID.4 software update. I have the ID.4 S 2023 model, would I get the new software updated, and when will it be? Thanks! Romulus Tong in California.
Are the upgraded seats and heads up display coming to the North American trims too? I know those are in European models.
Our uK ID Buzz is currently using software 3.2, any idea if 4.0 will come to such existing cars in time? Our ID Buzz has the 77kw usable battery.
Does the 4.0 software bring dog/camp mode? That will be a crucial feature for the Buzz.
Thank you for this test. do you know if the car can be used as a generator with an adapter? V2L
Hey, this was a great video, thx! Are these fantastic changes also coming to the ID5?
Yes!
You mentioned that Volkswagen should try to offer a Tesla plug port on the ID.4 towards the North American market, which is quite funny because Tesla is actually adopting CCS/Type 2 protocol in other markets, so Tesla is now eventually welcoming other EV owners to subscribe the non-Tesla charging plan to use the Tesla Supercharger network.
Is the id4 dc fast charge quicker? Does it have a heat pump?
I’ll wait for the Sodium Sold State batteries 😊
Does the 24 allow factory installed ability to stream video on the screen without a separate interface device?
Any idea if we will get an update above 3.1?
Good to see some VW managers speak on behalf of their EVs. Since Herbert Diess's departure, VW is treating EVs like a side project and no executive is advocating for them.
Thanks for this review. You mention the bigger screen but no dimensions were compared, what is the size of the new 2024 infotainment screen?
12.9
Did VW improve the video quality of the rear backup camera?
Do the new id4 has read drum and front disc brakes. Also front and back tires are not the same size?
@out of spec reviews, Kyle, is the 2024 id4 AWD coming to the US early in Q1 next year, or just the rear wheel drive? Living in snowy New England, the AWD is a must. Looking to your thoughts on this. 👍
**And what about a heat pump for the American market?** pretty please do tell!
