The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S Is A More Buzz Worthy Electric SUV For The People

  • After nearly 4 years on the market, VW’s first-ever dedicated EV gets some big upgrades in the form of new electric motors and much improved tech. The 2024 #VolkswagenID4 should become more appealing as the updated #ID4 gets a big power boost with up to 81 additional HP and on the #ID4Pro4S with RWD nearly 300 miles of range. Expect the updated #VWID4 to show up at US dealers in early March.

    We got an ID.4 and absolutely love it, it’s a great car, does basically everything well, the comfort is one of my favorite parts, it’s a very comfy car. The touch controls are also not nearly as big as an issue as people on the internet make it out to be, you get used to them almost immediately.
    I never felt the 201hp was slow, not fast but not that lacking, but the power bump for 2024 is nice along with the other changes! Makes a great car even better!

    Drums brakes arent as attractive, but because its an RWD EV, most of the braking power is at the front anyways, with the rear being motor based regen. Drums here won't have issues of rusting and are extremely low maintenance. And as an owner of the 2021 model, I can tell you first hand how much the front brakes have a tendency to get rusty. There is always a thin layer of brownish brake dust on the front wheels while the backs are squeaky clean.

    Thanks for the video. Nice to hear about the improvements. Wouldn't have minded a few more (less touch capacitive buttons, built-in dashcam, better stereo for levels below Plus) but still glad for the improvements. It's too bad the ID4 wasn't like this from the start. I think the ID4 currently has a so-so reputation now due to the earlier infotainment, power (for RWD) and range shortcomings of the 21-23 models. The 2 button window controls, though way overblown, also generated/generates some negative vibes.
    As improved as the 2024 is, it's still going to take some time to reverse the negative opinions. Since the 2024 exterior looks the same, I bet a lot of people will just assume the 2024 still has the shortcomings of the prior years. It was a poor decision by VW to not make a single aesthetic change to distinguish it from earlier ID4s. They could've simply made the rear turn signal lens amber instead of red, then people would be able to recognize it as a 2024 that has some improvements.
    I don't understand people's preference for hood struts. Ok, some people may not have the physical strength or height/arm length to lift up the hood, so I can understand that they would prefer struts. But for people who can lift up a hood, why would you want struts? I can lift a hood, so I much prefer a rod to prop up the hood. A hood prop rod will not break, whereas struts will fail (lose pressure) and need to be replaced after some years.
    In your video, the switching between AWD to RWD then back to AWD versions of the ID4, especially when they both had the same interior color, was a bit confusing.

      Most because the software for the infotainment screen was so bad. It was a real deal breaker till the 2023 model. But in my opinion the 2024 model is how the ID.4 should have launched in 2021.

    • @krane15
      @krane15 7 месяцев назад +4

      @@Demobot1 The infotainment also got a huge boost in power. It now responds almost instantaneously. Yes, still the capacitive switches and the two switch window controls that is just silly, but not deal breakers now that the power is over 300+ hp. That's a huge jump.

    Drum brakes: they can be designed in such a way that once locked, they don’t lose their grip over a longer engagement time like the disk brakes do. More suitable as a parking brake. Unlike a gasoline car, an EV like ID.4 doesn’t have a holding pin in a transmission that locks it when in park position, thus an utterly reliable parking brake becomes crucial. Since the electric motors can operate as a brake too, drum brakes at the rear become sufficient for deceleration duties. So, this design decision makes sense to me.
    The three buttons instead of conventional four for window up-down switches make neither ergonomic nor engineering sense. So there must be some other reason. My guess is that this is a part of a deliberate psychological barrier to prevent affluent buyers from purchasing ID.4 instead of Audi e-tron. Exquisitely drab interiors, with black shiny hard plastics that never look clean may serve the same purpose.
    The danger for Volkswagen in regards to ID.4 is of course competition from the likes of Honda, Nissan, and eventually Toyota, with their base EVs featuring highly ergonomic and nicely done interiors. I guess Volkswagen may revise their questionable design devisions, such as three-button window switches, after they realize that such decisions critically contributed to a loss of sales on the order of 10,000 or more ID.4s a year.

    • @michaels3003
      @michaels3003 5 месяцев назад

      I agree on the brakes. The window switches will be back, but there is no specific date. Possibly in 2025. I guess, separate climate controls will be added as well. It is easy to criticize, but we don’t know if these cars make any money for VW at this time. They invested billions of dollars in the EV endeavors.

    Volkswagen has made a big mistake by not building more Electrify America charging stations and upgrading to to improve sales of their EVs with 3 year of free charging. It is becoming more and more of a hassle to find EA charging stations that are not working fully or have a waiting line resulting in me using chargers that I have to pay for charging. They have also taken away included free options like folding mirrors, etc. My 2021 free charging is going to be up soon and because the free charging is tougher to use I d a it ad no benefit any longer. I put 50,000 miles on my ID4 every year and 80 percent of that is fast charging due to driving 250 to 300 miles a day when driving it. VW could of marketed their EVs as the car to buy if need to fast charge each day WITH free charging if u work/drive long distances each day with free charging. Free charging with EA not going to be any benefits any longer with changing to Tesla plug version. I see VW EV sales falling when EA CCS not with newer VW EVs. My understanding is that Tesla will be charging more when using their chargers with a non Tesla EV. Because of these issued my next car will be a Tesla.

    Got rid of my ID4. Don't buy this crap! It is like a train without railroads!!! And take a Tesla Y for a day from Herz - you'll see what I'm saying.
    Here's the story: I had always been a fan of Germans, until I bought this shame of German car making. Germany has winter, but it is somehow not prepared for winter AT ALL:
    1) we put winter tires from official dealership (Michelin tires mind you), and Anti-slip system started to engage whenever I am trying to accelerate. I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A TRUCK WHEN MERGING to a highway - the car DID NOT ACCELERATE!!!!! THIS IS INSANE!!! the dealership was trying to "dial in" some settings, they invited a VW rep - NO CHANGE. I ended up swapping my tires back to mid season.
    2) and now, after the "dialing in" experiment the range at 100% battery load shows 210 miles. I brought it back to the dealership - they can do nothing about it.
    3) no heat pump - goodbye range in the winter
    4) charging is slow - max charging speed I saw when charging was 65 - 70 kW
    5) finding a decent charger is a good luck experience - you have to drive off the highway and there is no guarantee there'll be an available stall that works... AWFUL. We are driving between Boston and NY often - a couple of times we merely made it back home even with a pit stop to recharge...
    Result: Picked up my TY in March 2024. ID4 was such a waste of money. We paid 36K+ for a certified used ID4 a year ago and now trading in for 20K (VW offers me 19K and tries to sell a newer ID 4 - guess my reaction). DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY, IT IS A PIECE OF JUNK!
    Tesla has a super reliable charging - it shows you how long to stay at what charger - and the network is SUPER RELIABLE!!!! After driving my TY for just 4 weeks - I forgot about ALL THE CARS I HAD PREVIOUSLY OWNED!!!

    It has got panoramic glass roof? Ooooh... how.... wonderful! In reality though - nobody ever gets ANY kind of use out of it. No, nobody looks up to the sky. Especially when driving. And No, it does not "allow in more light". You are already sitting in a tiny box with windows ALL around you. Yes, the same windows which you love so much to discuss how to tint the hell out of them( and I thought you wanted MORE light, huh?). But it does cost a lot though, making the car more expensive to build. And it does make your insurance to cost more too, as they do break, and when they break...oh boy, that is A LOT of $$$ to fix. So guess who will cover that risk - YOU will. And in summer, that glass rood allows in A LOT more heat, causing you to run AC more, causing loss of efficiency and loss of range.
    So yeah, what's not to like about the idiotic full glass roof???

    • @krane15
      @krane15 5 месяцев назад

      Incorrect, glass absolutely lets in more light. How could it not? In any event, I wouldn't order a glass roof because it glass. I'd order the sun roof because it opens. So I absolutely use my sun roof, especially in the Spring and Autumn. A sealed glass roof is useless to me.
