Love the collaboration with Alex, who is generally my favorite reviewer because of the amount of technical data he provides in a condensed format along with reviews that closely match my observations. Also enjoy his restrained humor (“frunkless” and “frunk ambivalent” being good examples) while some of the TFL reviews are a bit more subjective. Absolutely love TFL’s entire family of channels, especially the truck focus (never buy a tow vehicle without watching the pertinent Ike Gauntlet). All that being said I bought the AWD Pro S simply because we’ve had great success with VW and it’s an easy transition from an ICE vehicle. Three years of unlimited fast charging is also a big plus, along with hitch for bike rack and/or light motorcycle or utility trailer. Great presentation guys!
As an ID.4 owner, here's my take on the controls: * The sliders actually work really well, and after a few days of use I could find them at night too, even though they don't light up. It would have been nice if they had lit up, but it isn't a show stopper. * The touch buttons, on the other-hand, have more problems. The biggest is the response lag (a software issue, clearly). Secondarily, certain touch buttons are just too easy to hit accidentally when I am trying to do other things. For example, when I am adjusting the mirrors I often randomly hit the child lock and/or door master lock. * The in-car navigation is pretty horrible, but I just use wireless apple car play for everything anyway so... I don't really care. The in-vehicle map directions are more useful because it also pops on your central display (whereas Apple car-play directions are only on the main screen). Finding charging stops... not so useful. So, best to use an app for that. The in-car map mode also has a nice range circle on it, which can be useful. Of course, I have a whole laundry list of things I like and dislike, but the main take-away is that none of the issues are really show-stoppers... they don't cause me to not enjoy the vehicle :-). For example, even though the infotainment startup when you first get into the car takes a while, the car is actually drivable within 3 seconds of getting into it. Apple car-play connects automatically... so literally with the VW I just get in the car and go. I don't have to remove my phone or keys from my pockets or touch anything. I don't even have to touch the key fob to enter the car. As an owner, there are several tricks we can use to speed up the infotainment system too, such as removing the in-vehicle map from the swipe-left screen (it is still accessible via an icon). All of us ID.4 owners expect VW to give us an OTA update this summer (in the U.S.) that will fix a large chunk of the software issues. The mach-e is a great vehicle too, though I think everyone is aware of the fast DC charging issues it has had in its first year. Both Ford and VW have to get on the ball when it comes to car firmware if they want to compete against Tesla. -Matt
I always enjoy TFL when it collaborates with other folks "in the industry." By all means, give us more, more, more. I would especially like to see your new TFLEV channel get together with Bjørn Nyland from Norway. They are so far ahead of the US in the EV world, it's virtually "a look into our future" to see what's going on in Norway right now.
We test drove both (Mach E & ID4 AWD) and ordered an ID4 pro s in gradient. It was quick enough in AWD, I felt the interior was higher quality and fit our style better, and liked that it had a factory hitch and heated windshield for living in the north. The price difference was really the differentiating factor, including the 3 free years of charging. The 3.0 update for the ID4 is increasing max charge speed, and the duration of that speed, which will make the charging time much more competitive (10-80 in 28 minutes). Overall I'm happy with our decision, just waiting for it to arrive from Germany.
Good choice, I think that ford is ugliest of all the EVs on the US market. I’ve been an ID4 1st edition owner for almost a year now and my love for that car grows the longer I own it. I promise, you’ll feel the same once you get yours
You rarely see anyone mention the charging curve - or duration as you say. The ID4 doesn’t hit a high max rate but it holds that rate for a long time. In the real world, I park and hook it up, go use the can, buy some chips, and the car has gotten well over a 150 miles back. That’s enough to get to the next charger. It’s actually a relaxing way to road-trip imo.
I don’t know why Alex doesn’t know more about the Mach E. The updated charge curve is available for his car. Most of us are reviving plenty of updates via OTA including the ones he mentioned regarding CarPlay.
I like your collaborations with other auto reviewers. They are so entertaining and informative...infotaining! Gotta have more Alex (Alex on Autos) and Ryan (driving sport tv) collabs. Try to get Sofyan (redline reviews) and Kyle Conner (Out of Spec Reviews) too.

Shorter warranty for me means they don't believe that their products would last. Longer warranty means that they are confident and guarantee that their products would be going to last for a long time. Most of the car manufacturers knows that their products would break after 3-4 years that is why they have a shorter warranty. I can't wait to see the future line up of IONIQ.
Great video guys. I like the mach e but not the mustang name plate. I like that manufacturers are looking at EV'S as a way to maybe re-imagine vehicles. But some features are there for a reason. I worry that when a car gets covered in freezing rain those nifty handles may not work or you may not be able to get at them. Sometimes mechanical might be more reliable.
The whole "Mustang Mach E" name is a marketing strategy by Ford. They wanted the public to focus on the name and not the flaws of the car, and it worked. The name is so polarizing that people don't even mention the flaws as much.
Good luck finding a mach E without markups. These two cars are more like 10k apart and for that the ID4 is better value unless you like the looks and features of the Ford. Also a driving dynamics compare would have been nice. Amazing how tastes differ on looks on any of different looking cars vs ID4 does not scream EV. Not even close
ID4 is the only dealer thats charging actually MSRP in my aria and the rest of the others dealer like Ford Kia Hyundai and Tesla are charging over the MSRP. Approximately 10k over.
Not being able to tow anything is a deal killer for me with these types of vehicles. I tow several times a year things like U-Haul trailers for my friends and I and I can tow 5,000 pounds with my Santa Fe, not being able to tow a lot or anything at all is unacceptable.
ID4 will actually tow 2700 lbs in AWD, not the 2k they quoted. The factory towing package includes the 11/4" adapter with a 2 inch ball and 7 pin wiring.
Of course you can tow with EV's. BUT it will absolutely annihilate your range if you can find one that tows that amount (Cybertruck maaaaaybe when available ??). But for towing in general bank on about 100 miles MAX from 100% charge or 50% of your real world range at absolute best. But it is do-able just don't expect to be using a touring trailer/caravan much !. EV really are not built for these kinds of adventures. EVs certainly have their place they are not a coverall for all situations
Mach needs more ground clearance and better seats. I test drove both and like the more upright design of the ID4 better but like the driving and large screen of the Ford. Ended up buying hybrid Honda CRV as more affordable and accessible at this time. Will look to buy full EV in the future.
The way Alex described the Mustang as over inflated is exactly what I said! About the model y and model x. They took a great looking Model S and destroyed its proportions. As if they took inspiration from an eggs profile design.
I just think the VW looks sharper. Cleaner. But obviously they need to clean up their software and add a bunch of features. eg, fix the navi/find charging station issues, sharpen up the power output profile, plug n charge, increased charging kW, increased efficiency, reorganize the apps, range remaining should be in front of the driver and information on screen that should always be on the first page. Why are heated seats symbol the button for climate? Odd. No need for a home button. The apps don't need to be dumbo size... Those slider controls need to be light up. That's an easy fix. Get rid of the 2 arm rests too. Anyways, Ford Canada priced the base model under the gov't rebate level so they really blew it to make it more competitive.
Don't know about the measurements, but his point is very poignant. I'd rather have a shorter vehicle or longer cargo area (which adds more capacity per increase in length) than a frunk. Happy with VW design.
I drove the VW and was very disappointed. Very slow, laggy infotainment system. And no Frunk. The Ford Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are so much better
I quite like the ID4 but I wasn’t a fan of the infotainment and HVAC setup. Luckily in Scotland we have 2 other similar options based on the same MEB platform- the Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 E-Tron. The Enyaq is slightly more practical and slightly cheaper, the Q4 is more “premium” and slightly more expensive. The Enyaq uses a similar infotainment system to the ID4 and has HVAC on the screen, the Audi uses the familiar MMI infotainment and has physical buttons for the HVAC controls. I went for the Q4 as I preferred the styling and interior, plus Enyaq had a longer wait. Three months in and I’m loving it. I’ve put some videos on my channel for anyone interested- not sure when it will be available in the USA?!? 🏴
It’s very easy to reach most components in the ID4’s traditional style engine bay. Theoretically will make maintenance and repair a bit easier. Could have still added a tiny shelf under the hood
Most batteries in the electronics world have already configured their battery so they have a battery preserve builtin. That mean 100% from the user perspective is still below the true 100% of what the actual battery can take. That's a good thing and the way it should be. The user shouldn't have to worry about making manual charging adjustments. Just plug the car in and let it do its thing automatically. Anyway, the VW has the better console (if not by a large degree) that looks like it was designed in. The Mustang's iPad tacked-on just looks too aftermarket.
If Ford would have named it anything but a Mustang I might consider one. As one that remembers when the Mustang first hit the road in 64 it just turns me off. ID4 wins
With EV SUV I would rather have a larger storge area in the back like taking that 3-6 inches of frount to back space in the frount and puting it in the rear. Which would let me transpot larger items. With that said I do like Ford's frunks becouse they have a deainable area. Which is great to be uesd as a cooler.
Neither of these have V2L, so why would anyone buy one in 2022/23? Will Ford or VW add V2L to the 2023 models? It would be weird if not, since the Lightning and Type II _will_ have it. Also, VW, give drivers control over the damn regen levels already. A long-time e-Golf driver, the lack of strong regen will probably cross ID.4 off my shopping list.
The Mach E only delivers full power for 5 seconds which puts it in last place in every competition automatically. The VW looks better as well (I don't think it looks good per se but it looks better than the Mach E).
I Do NOT Think Anyone reading these comments agree with you or understood what you meant by "Mach E loses instantly for the 5 seconds of full power nonsense"
@@ebnhahn1993 The mach e delivers full power for 5 seconds. It's a well documented thing and verified by ford. I will edit my comment so it makes more sense though. Thanks
Mustang should change the name Mach E. The Mach E with the mark up and additional cost is just too expensive. The VW id.4 is more practical and cheaper. Toss in free EA charging for 3 years and it's a winner. Great show and comparison
I'd take the Route 1 AWD trim of Mach-E over the full suite of trim lines for either car - though either would be a nice car to have. For the ID.4, I would be more likely to get a more base Pro over the Pro S, due to the extra range & lower price.
@@ryandoyle4344 But that frunk is massive. The ones in these little SUVs probably won't see that much use. My point is that you shouldn't rule out a car because it doesn't have a frunk. The ID4 has bigger issues than the fact that it doesn't have a frunk.
Like most vehicles, the built-in nav is a joke. The ID.4 nav routing is easily fixed by running A Better Route Planner in on either Android Auto or Apple Carplay.
I’m trying to decide between these two exact models. The Mach E is definitely cooler, but I’m not a big acceleration ‘look at me’ type of guy. Love the charge port location and the range of the Mach E, but I love the ride comfort, sliding sunroof cover, and ground clearance of the ID.4.
It's now two months since the video posted, I've been looking at trying to buy an EV, and you can't buy either one of these new without a 3-6 month lead time. If you want to buy a used Mach-E, you'll need to pay several thousand above MSRP. Which is what I did: $53k+fees+delivery for a used 2021 Mach-E Select with 9000 miles already on the ticker. Crazy time to be shopping for an EV.
LOL. Being of German background, I must say, the Scottish get a bad rap for being cheap. The fact that this VW ID4 would not show the "free for 3 years" charging stations is the personification of cheap. How do VW "PR" their way out of that one? It makes you wonder what other intentional short cuts they took in the car.
As a Scottish guy I would love to deny the “cheap” reputation…. however since I got my Audi Q4 E-Tron (a fancy ID4 ) I’ve used mostly free chargers and spent under £30 on electricity in 3500 miles 😜 Videos of the Q4 are on my channel 👍🏻🏴
Answer is.... id4 with AWD. If they just remove the capacitive buttons it's easily that best vehicle in class as it's the only affordable one. Nobody uses a frunk. It's a gimmick
I’ve got a Q4 E-Tron which is the same platform etc but with Audi infotainment and “normal” buttons for the HVAC and windows👍🏻 I’ve posted some videos of it on my channel 🏴

For performance one should buy sports sedan like model 3 or polestar.
Heat pump or electric heater? Are these cars ready for Canadian winters?
Tesla model x has 5000lb towing
Percentage on ID4 is available on 3.0
Mach needs more ground clearance and better seats. I test drove both and like the more upright design of the ID4 better but like the driving and large screen of the Ford. Ended up buying hybrid Honda CRV as more affordable and accessible at this time. Will look to buy full EV in the future.
Do both cars have same battery technology? Do we have numbers on which battery will sustain the test of time better?
The way Alex described the Mustang as over inflated is exactly what I said! About the model y and model x. They took a great looking Model S and destroyed its proportions. As if they took inspiration from an eggs profile design.
What is the company Alex mentions that sells the sun shade for the Mach E?
“Frunk “ not a word. Not front motor -“fotor” not back motor - “botor”. How about “bindow”
I’m not sure why any company would release an EV without a front trunk.
So a frunk is more important to you than a spare tire?
I find it a waste of space. Better applied to shortening vehicle or adding to cargo area, which adds more storage than a frunk.
@@jimsomerville3924 Lack of a frunk allows easier access to components under the hood too.
love the mustang also love every eve car just the mustang is more afordable for the styling and beauty its a win
Ford Mustang Mach-E
Nice review guys!!! I own a Mach E GTPE and I love it! I’m a 2x Mustang owner and this Mach E is a Mustang (for older people)!!!!
Love the colab!
I’d pick the Mach E GT!
why does alex think any measurement of that frunk is 6"......hes trying to justify why he doesnt care. they are def nice to have.
Don't know about the measurements, but his point is very poignant. I'd rather have a shorter vehicle or longer cargo area (which adds more capacity per increase in length) than a frunk. Happy with VW design.
It matters when you want to park or walk around it in your garage, way smaller footprint.
Carmel Valley in San Diego?
I drove the VW and was very disappointed. Very slow, laggy infotainment system. And no Frunk. The Ford Mach-E and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are so much better
Will TFLev review plug-in hybrids?
I ordered both and both at 47k guess ill see what one shows up first?
Love seeing Alex. His channel is my favorite for car reviews by far .
What’s the “Tesla tap” for? You can supercharge now with a non Tesla?
Nope. Tesla Tap only works with Tesla destination chargers (Level 2). Doesn't work on superchargers (Level 3).
@@mowcowbell In 2024 it does!
@@Insurology Well Einstein, that was a 2 year old comment.
No , you don’t need special circuit for 11kW. 14-50 is rated at 50A so you have 12kW.
For continuous load, you can only use 80 percent of the circuit rating, so 50A only gives you 40A continuous (9.6kW)
@@sotek2345 that's why you put 60A brakes!
I would choose kia ev6
Mach-E...if there was an option for cooled/ventilated seats and the glass greenhouse roof could be deleted on the higher trim levels.
50 thousand dollars for a car ?
Not good .
I like the VW.
does this means it will be essayer to service id.4?
Mach Es are all recalled. They either don't start or stop during driving. Oops.
The ID4 infotainment issues would bother me
It’s fixed with the new update
Watching Andrey drive and keep looking down made me nervous that he was going to crash.
How does the Tesla tap work
Tesla Tap only works with Tesla destination chargers (Level 2). Doesn't work on superchargers (Level 3).
If Ford would have named it anything but a Mustang I might consider one. As one that remembers when the Mustang first hit the road in 64 it just turns me off. ID4 wins
Would love for you to discuss what self driving options are available in these cars.
The Ford sits to low for me for one thing. I am enjoying my ID.4.
Two stalwarts of the business.
I would take the Ford over the VW.
I believe the Mustang Mach-E Performance is the fastest production Mustang aside from Shelby or SVT.
Unfortunately, only for 5 seconds
@@ryandoyle4344 Hah, another mustang fangirl sad that the grocery getter will hammer his car to 60mph.
Towing and sun shade. ID.4
Alex always advocating for the lack smart packaging.
So far the Tesla model Y is my choice
Base model starts at $65K so about $14K more than this ID.4
Mustang mach e all the way
Let’s pick on VW until they bring the ID.3 ProS to the USA. More performance than the ID.4 (like M-E), the looks of the Golf of EVs and 4+mi/kWh.
Well done.
Thanks
Ford, even though I'm a VW fanboy. The touch controls of the new models absolutely ruin it.
How about a third option.....a HYBRID like the Prius. They use electricity and gas. I still don't see any public EV charging stations.
Some people get rather upset because the ID.4 doesn't offer a frunk.
It's just an option you mo*on......
I’d be interested to know how many people actually use the frunk. I bet the number is very low.
I love it and use it a lot!!!!! It’s perfect for things you don’t want in your car!!!!!
IMO, it's just inefficient design to not have it. Sure, people will use the Lightning frunk.
@@ryandoyle4344 But that frunk is massive. The ones in these little SUVs probably won't see that much use. My point is that you shouldn't rule out a car because it doesn't have a frunk. The ID4 has bigger issues than the fact that it doesn't have a frunk.
ioniq5 is the new id4. that nav routing is horrendous.....
Like most vehicles, the built-in nav is a joke. The ID.4 nav routing is easily fixed by running A Better Route Planner in on either Android Auto or Apple Carplay.
What’s the fascination with frunks?! Who wants to open 2 different doors to access luggage. The VW has the frunk in the bottom of the trunk.
I like the vw mustang ok
Alex knows his stuff!!
First time I've ever heard of that "problem" - probably a "behind the keyboard" issue....
Great
Except the Mach E IS NOT A MUSTANG
