    Someone at VW needs to hear this. Give current ID.4 owners some of these updates. Namely, battery preconditioning. Even a manual button without route planning would be better than the slow charging we are experiencing. Beta testing with your customers on a $40k - $50k car is just a way to lose loyalty. Do the right thing VW.

      Good points, but this is what happens when idiotic bureaucrats and politicians push car makers to rush something out. Tesla evolved naturally. 20 years gave them ample time to get shit right , except build quality. As for 2024 ID.4 , wasn't it supposed to get battery conditioning?

  • @JackRussell021
    @JackRussell021 8 месяцев назад +54

    The 2021-2023 cars *CAN* do route planning, and it isn't that much different from what you show in the video. It was even there at the initial product release, but you really need to look at the route planning on software 3.1, as they corrected a number of issues along the way that made it far more usable. The one major thing that they did add to 2024 is preconditioning to route planning - that's something the older cars don't have.

    • @JanHenrik541
      @JanHenrik541 8 месяцев назад +2

      I totally agree. I have found that my 23 doesn’t calculate elevation so I have found the route planning a bit optimistic. But that can be offset by changing the setting for remaining range when reaching a charge stop on route. This is not an issue if you have many charging options. Regardless, I only use the built in navigation and it has been fine so far.

    • @fiehlsport
      @fiehlsport 8 месяцев назад +1

      I find it odd that the 21-23 cars don't have preconditioning enabled with the very latest update. They do have a battery coolant heater - so why not? Would love to know the specs on the heater, maybe it's slightly higher kW on the 2024 models.

    • @JackRussell021
      @JackRussell021 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@fiehlsport VW isn't really saying why not. The heater does come on as soon as you plug into a DCFC, so the older cars are perfectly capable of warming the battery. The missing bit is to add a button to infotainment, and/or somehow tie it into the navigation.

    • @pine111
      @pine111 8 месяцев назад +3

      The route planning on 21-23 ID.4s really isn’t bad either, I don’t know why Kyle always hammers on it, it’ll get you to a high power station with a low SoC and have you ride the curve and then go to the next station, it’s a lot better than say Hyundai and Kia’s, which makes you get to a station at like 50% and charge up to 100%, which is awful.

The cars improve so fast that it doesn't pay to hold on to an older EV when the newer cars are so much better. On the other hand, cars coming off lease are going for a song. • @CFG39
      @CFG39 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@mart0225 I do wish they would offer DCC and not force 21” wheels on the new Pro S model. Big wheels are the single biggest range killer on EVs. I’ve swapped out the big OEM wheels on my last two EVs and gone from 20” to 18” on my Model 3P and 21” to 19” on my EV6 GT. Range jumps by 20-25% just simply downsizing wheels and going with certain tires that are still good for driving enjoyment but also efficiency-minded. The improvement in steering response, ride quality and cost savings on tires alone makes a huge difference too. I spent the same amount buying a set of 19” wheels and tires for my EV6 as a replacement set of tires alone in the OE 255/40R21 size would have cost. The tires are double the cost going up to 21”.

A colleague’s Model Y is experiencing significant wear; the moldings are detaching, there are creaking sounds, and the interior panels are not secure, among other issues. You mean people don't appreciate legacy manufacturer EVs and praise Tesla too much? I agree that there is a misconception about what Tesla actually offers for the money. The Model Y has one of the worst specs for the money today and build quality of all Teslas are below average. A few years ago acceleration and a touchscreen might have been enough to persuade naive tech-enthusiast to buy an expensive EV, the big mass market is looking for better quality deals tho and they increasingly find them at legacy premium manufacturers

      @richardh3587 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@BBingo-v5i Yep- I think the biggest (maybe only) real advantage that Teslas have now is access to the supercharging network. And, as we know, that is now opening up to other automakers as of this month (with Ford being first). To me, the "big 4" (Id4, model y, ioniq 5, Mach E) are all similar enough that it just comes down to which one you can get the best lease deal on at this point. If pricing were equal, i'd probably choose the Ioniq5 just cause i like the styling. ID4 woudl be my 2nd choice and Model Y is last due to build quality, inability to turn off one pedal driving and uncomfortable seats.

    Kyle, Tesla MY is definitely more expensive:
    - $1,000 more per year for insurance
    - $1,000 Trailer hitch mount not standard (ID4 upper trim has it)
    - No free Supercharging (ID4 gets free 1,400 kWh in Canada over 4 years)
    6.40% vs 3.99% finance rate over 60 months
    $1,000 No roof rails (ID4 has it standard and you can use your existing cross bars; just maybe need different mount)
    All these add up to ~$15,000 over 8 years.
    So, cost and value is not comparable between the two.
    And now with the significant updates, the ID4 is a truly compelling option!

    Drum brakes on the rear makes a lot of sense on EVs, protected from the elements and less maintenance and drag (disc brakes always touch the rotors a little bit).

    In Europe/Germany the sales of the ID4/5 are really smashed by the Skoda Enyaq. The SUV version is maybe the most practical MEB car and the coupe design is really a lucky stroke. Especially the VRS with alcantara interior looks soooooo good. For leasing, even the RS, it much, much way cheaper than any tesla and the list prices are starting to be irrelevant with 20+% discounts.

    7:23 Regarding the battery-limited power output of the 2024 (330 hp) is there a different F:R bias for the power delivery than the 100:195 hp that the 2021-2023 AWD had? Could an OBDII dongle be used to see if it dynamically adjusts more bias to the rear and dials back the front motor?

    I got a great Garmin DriveSmart to use instead of the ID.4 nav. The VW nav system is rudimentary, routing can be goofy, has very limited storage of "favorites" and favs can't be organized into folders of commonality. To power Garmin, I found a USB-C to 12 v outlet. One oddity with VW nav, it won't to a round trip: point A to point B to point A. Also, why does VW nav keep showing me gas stations?

    I’ve spoken to quite a few people regarding EVs and why they are hesitant in going the EV route. Number one reason is price. Way too expensive. Manufacturers need to listen to this. There’s absolutely no reason at all for selling EVs at the ridiculous prices they are charging. Lower the bloody price for crying out loud.

  • @future62

    Great review as always. Do you know if available power drops off as steeply with SOC? That's the only gripe i have with my 2023 S AWD

    • @theairstig9164
      @theairstig9164 8 месяцев назад

      You should only notice when it gets close to 10% SOC. The difference is the overhead between the battery voltage and the motor voltage. If the battery SOC goes from 440v to 320v but the motor voltage is 360v you are going to lose peak power at about 365v.
      Bjorn Nyland covers this. It’s not a bug it’s a feature. When max power isn’t available, a warning will appear.

    The free charging was a huge factor in picking ID4 vs Model Y... We live in apt and can only charge at EA, we only charged to 80%. Her car was parked & totalled 2 weeks ago. She is happily now able to get ModelY probably next week. We looked at other EVs and no one comes close to Tesla. Free charging gone makes ID4 a pass. It was nice but software was a running joke we had... The ID4 tells you when you want seat massage, what ambient color you get and the window switches, how does that not get fixed, worst idea! I Like Kia EV9 but anything dealing with EA is a pass. Maybe Mach-e with 0% interest, but charging takes too long, sales person scared her about fast charging. If only Fisker Ocean had good software etc...

      Same here... Apartment living the 3 year free was the main reason over the model y and a deciding factor over the ionic. So the 2024 ionic and ev6 gets 2 year free but VW doesn't.. lame!

    Great Video @Outofspecreviews, awesome changes. I could not confirm if they integrated a "HEAT PUMP" unit to improve efficiency, is that available on the updated models?
    My ID4 has also a SK, German made 2023 model AWD ~84KW (can't remember the exact number right now). I'm not due to upgrade until summer 2026. Cool change on the charge plan. Will help expansion of the charger networks and allow vendors to cover their costs. No issues with the car at this point, works like a charm with predictability.
    Looks promising.

    Nice!. I have the 21 First edition... i don't mind the software. Even if they didn't update the in-car software why couldn't they just update the app for us 21-22 owners the route planning within the android/iphone app? That seems like it would be easy for them and solve a lot of problems. Also is the hardware for battery preconditioning and plug and charge in our 21-22 ID4's? I would love those features... but if the software and those 2 features and the car being a bit faster is the only differences I'm gonna have to problem passing on them until I get my Rivian R2 if the company survives and it gets delivered.

    I have a 22 ID4 ProS. I use this car on Turo. Guests really like it. The range isn’t that great, and I don’t recommend this for road tripping versus other electric cars I have. Also, amazingly enough, you cannot lock or unlock the car remotely. In 2024 this would just seem to be a standard feature. This means I put a mechanical lock box on the window so my guest can get the key to the car if I leave it at the airport. If I got a notice that the car was unlocked, in the evening, I would have to go outside to lock the car with the key fob. Fortunately, my neighborhood is pretty low crime and I’m not too worried if the car got left unlocked overnight at home. This highlights the overall inadequacy of the software. However, if I am just driving around town I would rather be in this vehicle for ride quality smoothness, and a general feeling of solidness that surpasses our Teslas
