  • Principal Bob takes you into ten things your salesperson should have taught you about your ID.4 before you departed the dealership. These are little tricks and features of your car that will make life easier and solve common problems from how to disconnect the charging cord, to understanding the heating and cooling system, and that is just for starters! How many of the items in the video did you know before the dealer's driveway? What do you wish you would have known before you left the dealership? .

Thanks, Bob, Very helpful video. I have had my ID.4 AWD Pro S for almost a month, and learned a couple of things, including the range via the Navigation System. Very cool! I have a question: when I first got it, I was able to move my leg under the rear gate to open it when I had a grocery bags in both hands, but somehow it is not doing that after a couple of weeks. Do you know the steps to set that up again? I went under "Settings," and the “Easy Open” is still checked. I unchecked and rechecked it, but it still does not work. Thanks again.

I love my 2023 ID4, but I had to struggle a bit because my sales rep did not give me any of these crucial tips, and had to figure them out as I went along. Google searches have been a lifesaver, but wish I had found this video earlier. The worst omission is failure to inform new owners about what to do if the charging plug will not release. It happened to me at a public charging station. Thank you for putting this out there.

I found a pretty cool but obscure ID.4 tip as I was poking around RUclips. If you want your 12V power outlet in the trunk to always be on, so that power is available even when the car is switched off (maybe when you're camping), there is a corresponding fuse in the fuse box that you can move from the switched position to the always on position. It takes just a few seconds. This is apparently a general VW thing, not specific to the ID.4, but works on the ID.4. Of course, you have to be careful not to run down the battery!
On a related note, when I was poking around the infotainment system screen, I think I might have seen a setting to keep the 12V battery topped off using the high voltage propulsion battery. If it's what it sounds like, it might help prevent the 12V battery from getting drained. Any idea if it would help in this situation?

It turns out the Energy Management setting is in the phone app under Battery. The app describes this as "Enable high-voltage battery when 12-volt battery is too low to send mobile app commands to the vehicle. Selecting High Voltage battery usage for remote and other operations will impact the vehicle driving range."

Excellent video! I have two questions that maybe you can help with. I've had a 2021 and now a 2023. Whenever I hit the voice button to construct a text reply it doesn't work. It want you to press the screen instead to type a message. What's the point of having a voice feature if it won't construct a text message reply by voice? Am I missing something? AND on both models I've had there seems to be 2 internal clocks? I say this because when I get a new text message and ask the car to read new message, I can see on the screen the time that it came in, however when the voice actually reads the message, the time she says is different. For example I receive a text at 5:00 p.m. and see the time on the screen, but she says the text came in at 9:00 a.m. and I don't know if that means it's 8 hours behind or 16 gours ahead. Can you test it yourself and see if you're getting the same issue? And is there any fix for this?

Does the id4 have the same charging faults of the id3/Cupra Born? Neither of those charge per technical data statements and have a battery safe mode which destroys overnight low tariff charging. Needless to say VW don’t have anything to say about it or any solutions to it.

I have one of these gems and you and I both know that the Software is crap. The navigation system will lead you to gasoline stations instead of electricity America which is owned by Volkswagen. And to to it off the charging station can't automatically connect to the car even though once again electricity America is owned by Volkswagen. I see competitors charge and the charger reads the car without having to use a cellphone to activate the charger. I wouldn't recommend this car is they have me a million dollars. One more year in my lease and do to Volkswagens ignoring these big customer issues I would never now buy any VW Infotainment center is horrible. The TPMS system is the worst in the world. It doesn't even show the pressure. If your tire is over pressure it will tell you it's under pressure. Oh, and their have been zero over the air updates that they promised every couple of months. DON'T BUY THIS CAR. YOU'LL BE SORRY.

Funny Story, Sarah and I went to look at cars today, while we were there the Salesman was very non-presser so he left us alone to look at the cars on our own. While Sarah played in the drivers seat I checked out the back seats. Finally Sarah joined me in the back to see how much leg room there really was with the front all the way back. Well... when it was time to get out of the back my door was child locked. And so was Sarahs, so Sarah reaches over and starts honking the horn, no one comes to help, more horn, no help, more horn still no help (No one in the lot walking around) more horn. I am laughing so hard by this time its a wonder I didn't pee my pants. Finally another Salesman and a couple start checking out the car next to us, Sarah honks some more, they bearly look at us. Sarah then starts knocking on the window and points at the door. Finally the salesman opens the door asking ""Is there a problem?"" I am still laughing like mad and no one is opening my door. When the first Saleman finally shows up he opens the drivers door and says "You can just push the child button lock again to open all the doors." Still laughing like a loon I answer "Yeah, If you know where the button is..." He looked a little sheepish saying "Oh, Guess so.. Its right here" as he pushes the button to unlock my door. Sarah then admits she was playing with the button on the panel not realizing what it did. I am still laughing (but not as hard) as I write this about 6 hours later. So what did you do this weekend??

0:35 That is the stupidest thing someone gets to say. Shows limited intellect..
    Ownership, doesn't mean knowledge.
    Here is a brief example.
Engineers that develop fighter jets or race cars, or hell, spacecrafts , none of them are owning or driving them, yet they are very capable of doing so.
Now look at all the people that own cars and the vast majority of them, have no idea how their cars work, and if something happens, they go to a repair shop, because they are oblivious to it.

A very good introduction to the complexity of managing a modern car, electric or not. There's far, far too much to tinker with that can make the experience of the vehicle less than it should be. When it's exclusively done through a touch screen, that's even worse. For example, the radio volume controls - totally invisible in the dark - and the HVAC controls, too. Surely physical knobs and buttons are far more effective. I have a friend who decided against changing his Mk 7 Golf for a Mk 8 Golf because of the controls. VW need to re-think this. Come to think of it, many other manufacturers could too.

Great info! I have one question. On my '23 ID4 Pro S, when I put the driver side window down part way then go to put it back up either with a half push or full push (auto up/down), the window goes down first and stops full down so then I have to put the window up from there. I know about the 'reset feature' where you hold the button at either the close or open full for 5-10 seconds. That more or less works but after a few times it reverts back to the same operation going opposite of doing what you want. Are the windows software controlled? It's not a big deal but seems strange to me. thanks!

Hello Bob, This might be a stupid question but all the RUclips's that I've seen have always charged their car on Sunny days. Can you charge Electric car in the rain? It is electricity and Water and electricity don't mix.

Thanks so much. A few comments and questions: 1 when is vehicle to house power coming, i think a software update enables this and then what do i need to make this work? 2 A video on how to best plan trips for charging including thing like a round trip and setting preferences to prefer electrify America which is free would be great. 3 Another good tip is how to use Electrify America, charging stations are often difficult to register at, but using app on phone to select which charger you are using once there seems to fix many of the problems i had.

First of all, this was awesome - best I have seen!!! I have 30,000 miles on my First Edition.I love it - but I admit it is a work in progress. I have 2 questions. One - how do I set t it so the lights go on inside the car when I open it up? I mean all the lights. I know how to push the overhead button ( but it is dark and half the time I can't find it. How do you set it so these lights always come on when I open the door. By the way - it is a great system when all the lights are on you can find anything - but I can't figure out how to set it to always light up when I open the car door... The second question you might not be able to answer. How do I set it so the beeping when I back up does not continue for the whole time I am backing up?

I stumbled upon an issue with Qi wireless charging for my phone (Google Pixel 6) in a 2022 ID.4. The wireless charging works just fine, but I was getting repeated alerts on the display saying something like "Wirelessly charging mobile device." This would appear, then go away, then reappear lots of times. I tried moving the phone left and right, inserted all the way, then tried with it moved somewhat toward the rear of the car. None of that worked to make the warnings stop. But finally, I found that turning the phone so the top of the phone display was oriented to the back of the car the warning would appear once and only once in each driving session. In all of these attempts, of course, I had the back of the phone facing down.

Can you make a video showing what the Carnet App looks like and how to use it on your cellphone?

Good Afternoon Principal Bob. Thank very much for your previous reply. Concerning this latest video, particularly tip #5, I thought that was a really cool visual on the map being able to visually show the range limit of the car. However, I have been unable to replicate this tip. Now I do have the last of the German built cars, and I do have software version 3.1which I think is the latest version. I have tried following your example several times, but I just can't make that perimeter appear. Any thoughts? Also, would you have any idea for snow chain recommendations for the ID.4? I can't seem to find anything in the manual or online about whether they have to be cable or whether there is a chain version that could be used and in a 4 wheel drive which end of the car they would have to go on? I'm sorry to bother you about these things, but I can't seem to get these answers out of my local dealership. Thanks very much for your time.

Hi from Boulder, Bob. Thank you so much for the videos, I've listened to this one twice and will listen again. We picked up our 2023 ID.4 on Thursday and we found your info very helpful. You did address climate control but here is a Q: Is there a way to turn the cabin fan completely off? It seems to be on all the time whether in Eco or Comfort or Custom. And, we do not seem able to customize the climate in the Custom mode!? Here's something our sales person did not tell us - just press the "i" button in the cabin to contact VW app support. That enabled us to make me the Primary car user and my husband the Secondary user (instead of Primary and Guest). Then I was able to allow him full access to info on the app. Thanks, again.

Bob, my salesman at Baxter VW Omaha did a poor job explaining what is included and what isn’t. They also couldn’t answer certain questions about the EV portion of the car like heat pumps and battery preconditioning… I think it’s sad
that certain car companies don’t know their own products as well as they should.

You didn’t mention the heated steering wheel and how to edit the drop down menu where you have the auto hold (which I don’t have because I have a 2021).
Thanks for the nav range map. Didn’t know that. Never use it either but will try it out tomorrow.
