Yea the Yamaha looks more like a Suzuki SV650 than anything. I wish Yamaha had used a similar design philosophy because their three cylinder engine is so great.

Ok again, you’re comparing a bike with a taller transmission over its stock form and a lower revving tune to a bike that’s got a sport naked motor and trans with race sprockets. Put one on stock sprockets vs a stock z900
having owned both the kawasaki and a mt 09 all be it in the form of the tracer i can tell you that the build Quality on the z is far superior than the yamaha and im surprised all 3 of you failed to mention that fact. also riding the yamaha at speed over 110 mph is a scary expirience where as the z is planted up to and over 130 mph....the z is a far superior motorcycle trust me.
Yamaha 100% has taken Kawasaki to school with the new XSR 900 Before there were reasons to go with Kawasaki, now you are just plain wrong except when it comes to looks (both bikes look great). But in terms of capability or the level of tech its not even a contest, the XSR is on another planet. Also you cant question Yamaha's engines, the CP3 is mindblowing.
@@thabrownieviking they probably wanted to have one, but they’re really hard bike to come by. Being that they’re amazing probably. I love my 2021 MT-09
First off, elephant in the room, wtf is on Yams upper lip. Second, as a 2022 MT09 owner, coked out is a great way to describe the CP3. Suspension on the MT comes so soft from the factory, literally zero preload on the front forks. Once you dial in the suspension it holds a line great! Would love to see a video on the current gen mt or xsr.
I have owned the Z900rs Cafe for 2 years and I love it. Just got back from a trip to the UK and they have all the colorways there plus the Z900 se. They had 3 of the SE with Brembos and Ohlins and each one was already sold. I wish the US had more choice , thanks HD 😞 Anyway for my riding style and comfort expectations the RS is the perfect bike.
I've been a big fan of Kawasaki since I was 5 years old or so. Had many small engine things with Kawasaki engines, and have always had the best of luck with them. A lot of people think Kawasaki is basic, but when every other manufacturer does something crazy, and Kawasaki sticks to it's roots, does that mean it's still basic? By the way, comparing these two.. The Kawasaki is a MUCH better looking motorcycle.
I don't know what kind of performance the XSR 900 can do with aftermarket changes, but for my z900rs I've got a Brock's kit and performance camshaft and its putting down almost 130hp at the wheel. Now does it rev up as quickly as the XSR, I don't know, but its plenty of power for myself and so much better looking and comfortable over the XSR.
Great comparison, about a month after I bought my FZ09 lol! I was actually looking at the z900rs cause I wanted a 4 cylinder bike that wasn't uncomfortable (I have a grom and an fz07) and I saw the fz09 pop up for cheap so I jumped on it and "settled" on a 3 cylinder hooligan bike, and I have zero regrets!
Iam 100% a dual sport guy through an through, but if I ever got any kind road bike, it would certainly be that kawasaki 900, I freaking live that bike!!!!
Compare stock to stock! These bikes are for two different riders, not a head to head comparison. I had the pleasure to ride a 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900 for several years. It was my older brother's and I even took my test for my motorcycle license on it at 17 years old. Bronze and Orange is the only color that a Z900 rs should be!
yammie' stache is the best part of this video. i mean, great video. it's just ... that stache tho! also, sick retro yammie shirts. im buying one right now!
I am lost. I rode a 2005 C50T for 10 years. 542lbs, 45hp and 45 ft/lbs torque. The numbers on both the bikes in the video are amazing. I have to imagine riding either one is more thrilling and faster than my C50T ever was.
Watched this entire video and seems to me that reviewers are really missing the point here. If the objective is the have the fastest bike, then what are we doing here. If 0-100 is the concern, get a Hayabusa or Z H2 or something. The reason we are looking at these two bikes is to understand riding position, comfort, can we comfortably put our girl on the back for hour or perhaps two. Can we get it ripped into a corner and out without losing our lives. How comfortable is it to ride on the highway. Every single video i am watching is about how super fast XSR might be. After being 14yo, that is pretty much the last thing in my world of importance. The point is to compare how the motorcycles feel when you drive them, how they shift, how loud are they, can you see well with the mirrors, does the headlight shine enough. Are there any fancy bits we should be aware of like XSR's nighttime light up tricks. This review was fully useless to me.
Coming from the Mt09 and now on the z900rs café I loved my Mt09 but the Z900rs for me is a all around motorcycle and I don’t understand why you guys think it doesn’t want to rev I actually pushed mine with more confidence than my Mt09 plus the build quality is more superior. But I don’t think the XSR is the direct competitor, the z900rs is more in comparison with the speed twin.
I kind of wonder how it compares to the an r nine t or the current 900 monster? Obviously, both of those are twins, along with the speed twin, so I'd expect more low range torque. Maybe the Z900rs is just alone in being a four cylinder, standard with retro design. Sure, there are still plenty of four cylinder bikes and cafe inspired bikes, but the Z900rs is the only currently produced center of that venn diagram, that I can think of...🤔 The Honda cb650r is probably the closest, but with less horsepower and torque (I'd nearly forget about it.)
@@whimsicalstray there is also the CB1100 from Honda but I think this bike has been discontinued so yeah I think the Z900rs is the only 4cyl from the retro style bike which make me want to appreciate it more 👍🏽
I haven't seen the video yet, but I was searching something from papa yam about the XSR900, and I wanted specifically to see a comparison with the Kawasaki. This is strangely weird, but very very appreciated!
I’ve had my Zrs for about 3 years now and this has always been what I thought was it’s closest competitor. I have always thought that the xsr is a little faster, a little cheaper but the Zrs is a little better looking
Hmmm these reviewers obviously don’t understand the history… the z900RS is a salute to the legendary z900 featured in the CHiPs TV series, the original Mad Max movies and the Australian 1975 bike movie Stone. It’s a retro bike for old dudes who rode these bikes in the 70s and survived.
2023XSR Blue/Gold here.. Just do it.. it's a total Redo, Maybe even more Hooligan, and it's Great! Might have to move the Pegs down, but very nice Hardware here. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to use it. Know your limits, live to tell about it. Pushing 70 here, had a H2 at age 17.
As some one who just went through cross shopping these. The tech pack on the 2022 xsr900 really makes other bikes seem underdone. Also if the frame updates are what they promise then only the styling will hold you back.
Yep I did the Ivans flash and airbox mods along with the Akropovic headers and it takes the shackles off without turning it into the deathtrap that the XRS is. You guys call it rowdy but to me it was just unpredictable and dangerous.
Slow? Mundane? Suspension will start to “fall apart” in a zesty cornering situation??? It’s sort of sad that this is where new riders get their information.
Ive rode my friends z900rs a few times and never noticed it falling apart in the corners when pushed, wasnt completely used to the motorcycle but still past all the superbikes with their 10 levels of traction control and other electronic aids. I dont think alot of these young riders know how to ride motorbikes fast without electronic aids even then 90% are still slow.
Upgraded my 2019 Z with K-Tech F&R suspension, Bridgestone S22’s, K&N filter, Delkevic decat header with Leo Vince LV-10, and an Ivan’s Performance re-flash. I am now riding the canyons in classic Japanese moto BLISS!!! Great video!
I have done similar, but after suspension upgrade, my front wheel has a high speed side to side wobble which it didn't have before... so far I am the only one I know with this problem!
@@robertqueen2938 What area of the country are you? I had my suspension and other work done by J.J. Matter at Suspension Matters in Azusa, Ca. He’s amazing!

The Z 900 is for the nostalgic of the 70's and 80's. You just need to install for 4 to 4 exhaust and you'll feel 40 years younger. No need to buy a Harley anymore when you're over 60. The Yam is cool particularly the new 2022 model in blue, I like it but I'll never drive it the way it deserves.
Both nice bikes but it sure would have been nice to see the Kawasaki up against a bone stock Yamaha. I like the engine in the Yamaha but the Kawasaki looks way way better (at least to a guy that was riding for a few years already way back when these first came out).
Mundane is not what I would call riding the Z900RS. Yes, its not an ultra aggressive bike like the MT09, XSR, Monster 1200, etc, and that's because that's not the purpose Kawasaki had in mind for this bike. They did that with the regular Z900 (125hp and more aggressive riding position). The RS model is more of a daily bike that is still a ton of fun to ride.
Agreed, Kawasaki. “Why even make a black one? Just make them all green.” (Owner of a black Ninja 1000, here, wishing beyond wishing I could’ve had green.).
This is such a good channel and I am not even a rider :D I wish they had something similar for cars. I subed just for the great stuff you mention in a very fun way !
It's kinda like going to the gym and you see the smaller person pushing themselves to the limit then the big person lumbers in and doesn't break a sweat.
I can tell you which one looks better, the Kawi all day. But I've already done the retro thing, with a ZRX 1100 in red, silver and black which really looked like the GPz I wanted when I was in high school.
The fact you guys over the other side of the pond refer the the Z900RS as the ‘Zee900RS’ and not like we do in the UK ‘Zed900RS’ means all u have to do is say it like we do and the bike instantly becomes cooler
Guys, don't know what to tell you, but the Kawasaki dealeship had a new shipment yesterday, and the Vulcan 650 was the bigest part of the shipment. The Shop is full of them. So vulcan is the most popular.
As an owner of a 2019 XSR, I haven't a clue what Whitney is sharing regarding the frame and cornering. "It's horrible yet that's what makes it fun...?" The bike I ride corners beautifully and handles far above many bikes in it's class. It's a rare one-of-a-kind, engineering sweet spot at a price that if under a different manufacturer, would be 20-30% more and spend most of it's days in the shop to maintain. Between rider modes, traction control and a healthy respect for the throttle, the XSR can easily be authority under control..., however, this bike does not suffer fools and desires appropriate respect when riding no matter how experienced you may or may not be.
Didn't Whitney change the sprockets on her xsr?is a standard xsr going to perform as well With the original sprockets when doing the highway pull against the Z900? Sorry,Spite said it a little bit further in the video 😅
The thing is the z900rs is meant to be an easy going streetable z900. The xsr900 was always an mt09 with better ergos and suspension for sporty riding. It’s just not the best comparison in my opinion, xsr900 and mt09 compare a lot more directly to the z900
@@cz75fanatic easy fixes if you ask me, the z900rs is definitely prettier than Yamaha's. I hate what Yamaha is doing to all of their bikes, since 2018~ looks and aesthetics wise.
Can't say anything for what they said about the 900rs. But they can't fool my braincells. I've test ride that kawi and that motherfucker is fast fast. I mean FAST FAST. A lot of torque on low to midrange and the power is so linear.

Before there were reasons to go with Kawasaki, now you are just plain wrong except when it comes to looks (both bikes look great).
But in terms of capability or the level of tech its not even a contest, the XSR is on another planet. Also you cant question Yamaha's engines, the CP3 is mindblowing.
@@Surpriseify don't know about the new xsr but do know about the one featured in this video and comparing the two the z is by far superior
Why not the 2022? Comparing an old model at this point seems a bit misleading.
That's what I came here to say the 2022 XSR 900 has ALOT of improvements I've the older ones.
This!
@@thabrownieviking they probably wanted to have one, but they’re really hard bike to come by. Being that they’re amazing probably. I love my 2021 MT-09
Because it is sold out everywhere? :D
Good luck finding a new XSR.
Looks like Buddy skipped Arm day. lol
Cannot add anything more. Z all the way. :)
Kawasaki seems less suprior but its a facade. If they got as much attention youd see theyre better.
Very nice production quality, putting the new hires to work!
Spite: but in closing it is nothing compared to the Pan America.
Yammie: damn it.
Half the fun of owning a motorcycle is when you're done riding pop a cold one and look at it. Hands down Kawi wins.
Iam 100% a dual sport guy through an through, but if I ever got any kind road bike, it would certainly be that kawasaki 900, I freaking live that bike!!!!
Nice video. Would always go for the Z in this case. :) Keep up.
Compare stock to stock! These bikes are for two different riders, not a head to head comparison. I had the pleasure to ride a 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900 for several years. It was my older brother's and I even took my test for my motorcycle license on it at 17 years old. Bronze and Orange is the only color that a Z900 rs should be!
yammie' stache is the best part of this video. i mean, great video. it's just ... that stache tho! also, sick retro yammie shirts. im buying one right now!
the new RS has this candytone blue that is really nice.
with the regular RS, the brown & orange color way is the one to get.
XSR has also been available in a beautiful blue (though I don't know which years).
I love that root beer brown / orange RS.
I am lost. I rode a 2005 C50T for 10 years. 542lbs, 45hp and 45 ft/lbs torque. The numbers on both the bikes in the video are amazing. I have to imagine riding either one is more thrilling and faster than my C50T ever was.
I'll take the Z900 RS, more my style of riding. I satisfied my need for speed in '88 on my KZ1000 LTD. Just cruising for this old body now.
That intro had us dying 😂
Flash the ecu and put an exhaust on the RS and compare apples to apples. Makes a huge difference on that bike. It definitely wakes that 948 up.
These guys are wankers
Who does the ECU flash?
@@whimsicalstray there is also the CB1100 from Honda but I think this bike has been discontinued so yeah I think the Z900rs is the only 4cyl from the retro style bike which make me want to appreciate it more 👍🏽
I have a Z900RS. I agree with your report, honestly. It is so eloquent, it is CIVILIZED!
My XSR is so much fun. Makes other bikes feel docile that is for sure.
I haven't seen the video yet, but I was searching something from papa yam about the XSR900, and I wanted specifically to see a comparison with the Kawasaki. This is strangely weird, but very very appreciated!
If you like a bike, ride it. We love motorcycles. That's why we ride . Don't matter what you ride if you're happy
Yammie and Letterkenny are literally my 2 favorite things, ferda.
This isn't a good comparison. This is looking at both bikes as if they were not retro bikes... Because the XSR isn't even close.
Love the bump in production quality. It does not go un-noticed.
Yep, and that’s why I’ve got a Z900RS, and done a lot of miles on it.
Okay but i dont like the screen execution its nicer to have real guages
Need to visit Ivans tuning for the z900rs. He proper wakes it up with his mods
Yep I did the Ivans flash and airbox mods along with the Akropovic headers and it takes the shackles off without turning it into the deathtrap that the XRS is. You guys call it rowdy but to me it was just unpredictable and dangerous.
Go Whitney (I'm unsure how to spell your name) It's great to have a lady being a great motorcycles tester. You're very good 😊🤝
Yammie the stash is Legit 👀
Yammie is a red hat away from opening his videos with "it's a me, yammienoob"
Slow? Mundane? Suspension will start to “fall apart” in a zesty cornering situation??? It’s sort of sad that this is where new riders get their information.
Ikr so misleading and false
Ive rode my friends z900rs a few times and never noticed it falling apart in the corners when pushed, wasnt completely used to the motorcycle but still past all the superbikes with their 10 levels of traction control and other electronic aids. I dont think alot of these young riders know how to ride motorbikes fast without electronic aids even then 90% are still slow.
This is the only video I’ve heard someone say that about the rs 😂
digging the new camera work. well done!
@@dblr3000 I live in Maryland. Glad to hear you’ve had great success. I’m still trying to figure out the issue, hopefully I don’t need a stabilizer!
After riding my Nighthawk 750 for 550lb+10yrs 470LB is feather light to me.Dont think its "mundane" either.Lets face it its a street bike not a race bike and in this role its spectacular! Great engine,Style,Paint I4 what's not to like? Needless to say Z900RS is better overall bike stable beautiful dare I say better for rational adult rider.
Yo I learned on my dads 93 Nighthawk 750 and I kept trying to tell him it was a heavy bike and he was persistent that it was normal for bikes
I just wonder if something like a indian scout is going to be better because i get floor boards and sit in it like a couch so im nit goingnto be going around getting as many speeding tickets plus murica i really like this kawi but i also really like vtwin vro
Honestly it looks like you started out rolling faster on the xsr900 but the z900rs reeled it in
Someone caught the bias....
Both nice bikes but it sure would have been nice to see the Kawasaki up against a bone stock Yamaha. I like the engine in the Yamaha but the Kawasaki looks way way better (at least to a guy that was riding for a few years already way back when these first came out).
Not only it looks better but it is also built to a much higher standard. The Yamaha feels extremely cheap
@@thebulgarianguy8461 I don't doubt that one bit. Kawasaki build quality has always been second to none.
The XSR seat is about 20mm higher than the MT09. I find the riding position on the XSR very comfortable.
This is such a good channel and I am not even a rider :D I wish they had something similar for cars. I subed just for the great stuff you mention in a very fun way !
It's kinda like going to the gym and you see the smaller person pushing themselves to the limit then the big person lumbers in and doesn't break a sweat.
I don't remember an XSR900 back in the day. It just isn't retro. Which is what the Z900RS is. My1976 Z900 LTD was red.
" merch-purch" I like that play on words! Will definitely use that
for me the beatiful yamaha is a street bike and the kawa is a classic well no just a classic but the most beautiful bike of all time
At the end when they are comparing back at the shop that's the 3rd movement of bachs concerto in d minor playing in the background
"Can you be more specific?"
"Here's the same thing I just said but with more words..."
"Spite... Uhhhhh"
Yeah for real! - why didn’t you guys get the invite to the 2022 xsr900 press launch in Ventura?!?
This was the video I didn’t know i needed
What the hell is on your face super trooper!
Kidding, thanks for yet another great video! 🤙🏼
Would have loved to see the 2022 XSR900, not a fair comparison
Didn't Whitney change the sprockets on her xsr?is a standard xsr going to perform as well With the original sprockets when doing the highway pull against the Z900?
Sorry,Spite said it a little bit further in the video 😅
It’s a bullshit comparison.
It's a tough one because the Z900rs looks better but sounds like the yamaha rides better
The thing is the z900rs is meant to be an easy going streetable z900. The xsr900 was always an mt09 with better ergos and suspension for sporty riding. It’s just not the best comparison in my opinion, xsr900 and mt09 compare a lot more directly to the z900
Agreed. Slightly off comparison imo as well
I'm no even really a retro guy, by damn is the Kawasaki just out and out beautiful
Great. Love to see the new XSR900 compared to the old.
Doesn't it look wicked? And very nicely equipped, too. I want it
before i bought my new XSR900 in 2020 i also test rode the Z900 before it. the XSR900 felt more playfull and with more personality.
That is what I've been told. The z900 is just hammered by the ECU and exhaust system from the factory.
@@cz75fanatic easy fixes if you ask me, the z900rs is definitely prettier than Yamaha's. I hate what Yamaha is doing to all of their bikes, since 2018~ looks and aesthetics wise.
Whitney making a case for best motorcycle presenter on YT. Watch out world !
Can't say anything for what they said about the 900rs. But they can't fool my braincells. I've test ride that kawi and that motherfucker is fast fast. I mean FAST FAST. A lot of torque on low to midrange and the power is so linear.
good luck trying to find a 22 xsr... ive been trying to buy one for 2 months and no one in the country has one availble that i could find. just a bunch of dealers that already have deposits...
Was hoping for this video
I started on a 2019 Harley fat Bob 114 ….sold it ( stupidly ) really been considering as a commuter, 60 mile highway bike the Kawasaki Z 900 RS or the Honda cb500x? Whats say you guys? Thanks love me Yammie noob vids👍
coming from a Panigale V4 and looking to down grade to something comfy for me and my girlfriend to enjoy when yous talk about the z900rs the bike I’m thinking of getting it gives me second thoughts. But before the Ducati I had a mt07 restricted and really enjoy that. So yes I know the z900rs isn’t gonna be anywhere near as fast as my Ducati but speed and acceleration isn’t everything to me anymore. And if the z900rs has more power then the mt07 I’m sure I’ll like it
All we have to do is wait for Suzuki to revive their Bandit series
I love those Letterkenny cold openings
Xsr has a great motor. Just don’t go around a corner.
That’s the best looking XSR I’ve seen
THIS IS A DUMB COMMENT!!!!! I really dig how you integrate a woman into moto evals cuz guess what, it doesn't matter what you got down there, bikes are awesome for everyone and its cool that you recognize and communicate that with your vids. Awesome!
Z900RS looks 100% better
Great review.
