Seriously, just try riding the standard Z 900. It’s the same playful fast revving bike you’re asking for. The different tune and different cam profile on the RS makes a bigger difference than youd think. You can really see it in a dyno comparison

True I've had the standard Zr900 abs for 2 years now and I'm pretty sure the engines tuned to be hotter than the RS model I love it but if I could have the RS too I would for days I don't need all that torque

Despite having a cable throttle, it's still down to the way the EFI delivers the fuel. A different tune ought to fix a lot of the lag on the RS. Yes, they deliberately tune it differently, because it's not a sports naked - it's a modern classic UJM. They're trying to emulate the usability of the classics with this one - it's more of a bike for people who like to pootle about with classic feel and style than people who want to turn into a land-based cruise missile at the flick of a wrist. Honestly, I think a flash tune, a different air filter and perhaps a four-into-one-into-four pipe system will absolutely uncork this thing.

"I think its clear here that the XSR is a faster motorcycle"
I would hope so considering its got a full exhaust a tune and a regear ahead of the Z900RS.
The XSR probably gained a minimum of 15% more power over stock.
Apples and oranges here for sure, fix the Z up to match the XSR and it would be a different story all together.
Stock vs stock this would have been pretty even in terms of power and speed with the Z being ahead in all the other categories.

I'm 42 and maybe not as old as you, but dear Buddha does the Z900 look good. I don't even think about it as looking good because it looks retro; it looks good because it looks a lot like other great-looking bikes that just so happen to have been originally made many years ago - those bikes were just so far ahead of their time in terms of looks. I just put a deposit down on a 2023 RS Cafe and will likely pick up on Friday. It looks so sharp in the black with gold accents.

Interesting description of the z900 power delivery. I rode the 750 back in the early 80s and that was exactly like that, sluggish at low revs and then picked up. Never rode the original Z, but that is maybe the same character and they’ve engineered that into the retro.

Between these two, it's the z900rs for me. The 2022 XSR900 makes it a harder call but in the end I would be buying a bike like this largely for looks, and the z900rs is always going to win that comparison. The exhaust and tune will bring up the excitement level. Handling can be sharpened if needed. But no matter what you do to the XSR it will never look nearly as beautiful as the z900rs does stock. *chef's kiss* (And custom z900rs's are often jaw droppingly gorgeous)

Same here. The '22 XSR900 got all the bells and whistles. But do you really need the fancy "IMU" if you only go to the track once or twice a year? The quickshifter is pretty nice but overall, I'm gonna the pick the Z900RS, especially the cafe version!

  • @joetheagent

I watched both videos and they were fun to watch and contained of good information on each motorcycle for a person who has never ridden either bike... and also had an abundance of awesome Whitney quotes. What can I say, she has solid one liners. Personally, I would choose the z900 for the looks and the seat quality... I guess as I get older I care about ass cheek comfort and ergonomics more and more. The xsr has modern naked look and I do like it but the classic look of the z is more my style. I agree about the bikini fairing would be sweet but I like the black and don't really care for the bright green on Kawi's except on their dirt bikes where I find shouty bright colors to be more appropriate and desirable. The black is more dressed up and refined looking where the greens is a tad obnoxious for a classic looking street bike IMO. It would be interesting to see a tuned up z900 go against Whitney's tuned up xsr as I think the performance comparison would be a bit more even. Good videos y'all...keep em coming.

ive had both, the bonnie is lower, feels more like a steam train, doesn’t go or stop as well. The rs has more torque, more top end, better brakes, better cornering stability, more up right position and if you close your eyes, it feels like a standard Japanese naked sports bike thats had all it’s edges softened.

@@Koleboetel the RS has a cush drive too. It's definitely the ECU. The new euro regs means that when you cut the throttle, like say, when you are braking before going into a corner, and therefore have no throttle on, then the ECU cuts the fuel to the engine altogether, so long as the bike is still moving. Apparently it's called "fuel cut" or something like that in the ECU options. Older bikes would have an idle setting that would deliver a minimal amount of fuel during 0 throttle, no mater how fast you were going.
The problem with this, is when you go to roll the throttle back on, say, mid corner, there is a slight gap between when you turn the throttle (which on the RS is actually a cable, but also monitored by the ECU), and the ECU going "oh, hang on, you want to GO again?", so the bike goes from hard engine braking (because no fuel is being used), to "you are already at 10% throttle, crap, better throw some fuel on the fire". This can be designed or tuned to be unnoticeable, no doubt by using completely ride by wire systems so the computer has complete 1 to 1 control over the entire process, however, it seems many manufacturers don't care, or don't want to fix it in any other way just to appease some markets enviro restrictions. (This is actually why one "fix" for this is to raise the idle, so the bike never thinks it's at 0 throttle, but then the bike is pushing you around at "idle" which is unsettling at best)
So we end up with bikes (like the RS), where if you go from 0 throttle to any throttle, you get a noticeable jerk, which, mid corner, can be confidence destroying. The solution? There are 2: when you roll on the throttle, roll on super slowly and super smoothly, like 10 times smoother than you think you can, and 100 times smoother than you actually do, and f it up 50% of the time, but stop caring and work it into your riding style. Kinda solved?
Or, get a tuner to disable that throttle cut switch in the ECU. Problem completely solved.
Usually I'm happy enough to go along with environmental regulations, but in this case, it makes riding a motorbike much more dangerous than it needs to be, especially with a bike that is quite responsive, quite upright, has plenty of power, limited rider modes (the wet riding mode just makes the traction control way more intrusive) and is quite heavy for what it is.
I have gotten somewhat used to mine, but if it's raining, I'm mid corner, well, I just don't push myself at all anymore, sad, but that's what you have to do to save the environment right? (I'll be getting mine fixed properly now that everything is open again (virus we cannot name)

@@Koleboetel I had a 2013 bonneville se2 a2, beautiful bike, but not quite the performance level I'm up for these days. I'm on to my thrid set of rubbers on the RS. I highly recommend getting off the OEM rubber asap, they make those tires to a tight budget. I currently run Michelin Pilot Road 4's, fantastic tire, completely changed the way the bike turns in, holds a line etc. good in the wet too.

They could say all the beautiful and amazing things about the Yamaha, but that bike is just so horrible looking, and the 2022 model?!, Have you seen the new seat and tail, they are absolutely disgustingly horrible, It is just too much uglyness for. For me easy pick definitely and absolutely Kawasaki, what a beauty and peace of art it is. Also is very nice for cruising comfortable without having to worry about jerkiness like Yamaha. Lastly I just do not like the sound of 3 cylinder bikes, they just forgot to add 1 cylinder, there is nothing like the music of 4 cylinder bikes, nothing!!!!

I am curious about the new xsr900 and its ability to handle on twistys.

    • @MrGoddly
      @MrGoddly 2 года назад

I know Yamaha specifically targeted better handling on the new gen. Since it uses the same frame geometry and engine as my 2021 mt09 I would assume it handles similarly and the mt09 handles way better than the previous generation. With power modes using mode 2 or 3 (1 being the highest) I'm sure you can have similar power delivery as the 900rs while retaining the higher mode if you want to have fun. obviously I haven't ridden the new xsr900 since they are almost impossible to find yet and I already have my mt09 but considering it is mechanically the same as my Mt09 this is the best comparison I can give.
