How awesome are these bikes and the whole "retro" thing in general. Very awesome imo. From John's comment about the Honda being "new retro", it's interesting to see the manufacturers implement their slightly different views on what a retro bike is. COOL!
the Z900RS is a great bike to ride and has the looks but when you run the numbers it is $2,500 over priced. For example the standard Kawasaki Z900 has more power, better suspension and is about $3k cheaper. So really you are paying more for looks with less power and average suspension. One of my fellow riders was seriously looking at the Z900RS for AUD$18k until a Yamaha dealer offered him a new XJR1300 with a full front and back Ohlins suspension for AUD$12,500.
I have the Z900RS and it's a bike that makes you grin every time you hit the starter. Oh by the way, every Kaw fan knows the after market $4.99 cruise control trick, 8M4991 Caterpillar Yellow Silicone O-Ring
Things are simple. Honda has not even one retro element. On the other hand, RS900 has analog panel, retro seat, old fashion mirrors, painted tail (70's) and much more. If RS had twin exhausts and twin rear shocks it would have been the absolute modern-retro bike. But above all, RS has Character, Attitude and Style!
I own both these bikes. Kawasaki is more relaxed and a great looking bike. The Honda has better handling and I have the red one which is extremely nice. My Honda is not jerky at all, it’s actually smoother than my Kawasaki maybe because I ride it in rain mode. I prefer the Kawasaki on Highway as it keeps the wind at bay. I am looking to buy a BMW R9T next year.
How spoilt do you have to be to say nothing stands out about the Honda? I have seen it at shows and in the showroom and it stands out due to its sheer presence, superb fit and finish. Of course, I have not ridden the thing, but it absolutely stands out. In early 2017 I went for the XSR9000. Honda is definitely a cut above my own bike. If I had unlimited resources, I would not hesitate to get one to replace my existing bike however I am pretty happy with my bike as it is.
Great looks, more power, better suspension, better fuelling, better performance, beautifully built - but we don't want it, we want the Kawi because the exhaust makes weird noises and it's plush. Just goes to show how subjective motorcycle choice is, and that's the way it should be. I agree about the XSR. Great engine, but how hard is it to make switchgear that goes "click"? All the XSR/MT range looks and feels cheap next to the Japanese built CB's.
@Ess Tee ryder hahaha gtfo matey.. there's a ton of Ducatistis mad at the manufacturer for how much time in a year their bike spends in the garage getting fixed :D What's the point of character if you cannot ride your bike all year round? :D

Yeah I don't like the color or the fairing. But some of these (fully naked) Z900rs's look quite good. Like the look of the Honda too, to be honest, but abrupt on/off throttle is a major pet peev of mine -- so it's off the list.
At 5:37 he says the Honda has a “jerky, twitchy” throttle application, but then says at 12:10 the Kawasaki throttle “isn’t as smooth” as the Honda. Which one is it? This is a big factor for me in choosing
I could recommend either of these bikes! It just depends on your personal view and likes. I have a new Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe! And I really enjoy everything about it! Retro with a bright Future in Green!
@@m.cutter7340 Maybe your particular gen wasnt constrained by regulations? Most new bikes are these days and thats why they unlock so much power whenever mapped.
I wish they made the original dark green with the gold pin stripes, that was my favorite bike of all time! And I now own a 2013 Ninja1000. But that bike still holds a special place in my garage memory.
I love classic styling on a bike - I'm currently riding a Suzuki C50 - and I hope we'll see more "retro" designs soon. Say something in the 1300cc range, hint hint. Between the two bikes you talked about, I would take the Kawasaki. I'm more into relaxed cruising than high performance, and I like the Kawi's styling more.
I was hoping Zack and Ari were going to be doing these reviews . . . opps I was a fool. Nevermind I feel asleep listening to these 2 chat and REPEAT about "plush" a thousand times, etc! LOL :)
I have a Z 900rs and I had the opportunity to test the Honda CB 1000 extensively. Sure, the Honda has more power and is technically a little more modern. (In this respect, you can not compare the machines at all, here would have been taken the Z 1000). Nevertheless, I would not swap. I love the classic fittings and the classic look. The Kawasaki is a modern motorcycle with a good classic look. Some manufacturers also build this, e.g. Triumph, BMW, Ducati, but the Kawasaki is the only four-cylinder. (Oh, that's not quite true, there is still the classic Honda CB 1100th This Honda is really "old school" but also has their disadvantages.) Ultimately, you have to decide. Both are great motorcycles.
Probably on fire next to a garage somewhere. I had an FZ1, tried to figure out why it was hard to start and had dim headlights, and found that Yamaha "engineers" had forgotten what a relay was, and routed the entire +12V line directly through the ignition switch and back to the battery through a narrow gauge wire that was dropping 3V for the whole 12V system. Which is a very long winded way of saying Yamaha can fuck themselves forever and should stick to tuning forks.
I'd rather save a couple grand and buy the stock Z900RS. I'd buy an aftermarket cowling for the headlight for less than $200 ( same cowling as the retro model already available). I'd get the black, or midnight blue (whatever it is). All I remember about that poop brown color on the original oldie was that it didn't hold up to the weather. I'd spend my money on putting clip-ons on the stock bike as well. Can't say anything wrong about the Honda. I'm sure build quality is excellent. I did sit on the original CB1100 when it was first reintroduced and the seat was a brick. Not a fan of tons of chrome to polish either. I sat on the 900RS when it came out and the tank just seemed really wide to me. Like top heavy wide. Right now I have a 2018 MT-07. I'm 6'2", 170#. Reach to the bars is ok but too upright for me. The whole bike feels like an adult version of a Honda Grom! Beautiful motor and sound but they really need to put it on different platforms. And for God's sake would someone please put a shaft drive on ANY of these bikes? I like maintenance free. No one makes a mid displacement bike with shaft drive since Yamaha in the Seca era of the 80's! Not talking about cruisers. Not my style. And the Honda NT07 is just slow as hell, not to mention discontinued. Loved my 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo. All day comfy. Rode Iron Butt with it stock and everyone freaked out.
I don't see anything classic about the CB1000R. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a nice bike but neither the aesthetic nor the design are a callback to older bikes. At least the Z900RS is a Z900 dressed up as a Z1
For the millionth time, just because a bike has round headlights, it's not a classic bike. Honda's engine comes from a superbike, whereas Kawasaki's engine is a street platform. Honda should be compared to Ducati Monster (for looks), BMW S1000R, KTM Super Duke or Yamaha MT10.
@@Justen1980 Negatory. 2003 the Z1000 came out, being a true 953cc. That was based on a modifed ZX-9R engine with fuel injection added. 2010 the Z1000 got a 1043cc engine, based on the newly released 2011 Ninja 1000. Rumors are the engine was a ZX-10R derived design. Still today, the Ninja 1000SX (slightly different name, same bike) runs the same 1043cc engine with additional refinements and technology. Z900 was a replacement for the former Z800. The engine for the Z900 is based on the 1043cc engine, but proprietary cylinders, heads, valvetrain. Same stroke length, smaller bores. Result is a creamy smooth, very torquey 948cc engine. You're read many people saying "it is a sleeved-down Ninja 1000 engine" but manufactures are not using sleeves. Those went out in the 90's basically, with today's sprayed-on ultra-hard plating for aluminum alloy cylinder walls. The result is less weight, cylinders closer together, narrower engine blocks.
@@exothermal.sprocket I own the 2019 z900rs cafe, so this is all very interesting to me. All the internet research I did years ago before I bought says the Z bikes and Ninja-sx come ultimately from the zx9r Ninja's engine, albeit modified over the years with different configurations.

"In October 2009, Kawasaki unveiled the 2010 Z1000. It had a new aluminum frame, digital instrument panel, bodywork, and engine. Bore and stroke are 77 x 56 mm, 1 mm more than the ZX-10R's 76 x 55 mm displacing 1,043 cc. That is up from the previous model's 953 cc. Compression ratio is 11.8:1, and fuel injection is handled by a bank of 38-mm Keihin throttle bodies." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Z1000
not convinced, a "modern" 2011 zx10 type engine would cost more and have at least 20 more HP. Kawasaki didn't do this, they refined the zx9r engine for the Z bikes. Suzuki and Honda have done so with newer engines in their naked bikes and it bears these results- More hp , higher price. Keep mentioning "different architecture" and "rumors its from zx10" but all I've seen is its the zx9r (which was designed to have Fuel Injection sensors) that has been reworked over the years
This people seem to have a habit of doing weird comparisons. Why not comparing the Z900RS with the CB1100RS? Seriously, you'll think motorcycle "journalists" would know what they're doing.
I'd prefer the 'old' ZRX1200 from Kawasaki...put a few dollars in suspension mods and rejet the carbs along with a full Akrapovic exhaust along with braided brake lines and some sticky rubber...'Let the Good Times Roll'.
As new and fresh a design the Honda might be, it lacks that 'wow' factor. It's very vanilla in comparison to the Kawasaki, which is a real head turner.

Went to see Top Gun Maverick & now there is a 50th Anniversary Z900RS in my garage! 😍
I have the Z900RS and it's a bike that makes you grin every time you hit the starter. Oh by the way, every Kaw fan knows the after market $4.99 cruise control trick, 8M4991 Caterpillar Yellow Silicone O-Ring
without a doubt take the Honda in this!!
I am looking to buy a BMW R9T next year.
i sat on the z900 cafe and was leaning forward like a cbr. Handlebar risers should be needed or bring the bars back 10cm or 4" for my comfort.
I have a 2018 Z900RS...and I' m in love with this thing...nicest bike I've ever ridden.
@Ess Tee ryder breaking down is not character
@Ess Tee ryder character is a word ducatistis used to use for vibrating turds they rode that spent its 3/4th lifetime in a garage getting worked on
@Ess Tee ryder hahaha gtfo matey.. there's a ton of Ducatistis mad at the manufacturer for how much time in a year their bike spends in the garage getting fixed :D What's the point of character if you cannot ride your bike all year round? :D
@@cagednm69 No my Miata (90) has the SOUL of a British roadster (TR6/Spitfire/MG) but it never breaks down and runs like a champ....so sorry wrong on that point....MATE!!!!
I'd go with the Kawasaki, but not in that color. I saw one on Aussie Kawiman's channel that as I recall was a darker matte green, and looked really sharp.
Yeah I don't like the color or the fairing. But some of these (fully naked) Z900rs's look quite good. Like the look of the Honda too, to be honest, but abrupt on/off throttle is a major pet peev of mine -- so it's off the list.
We get a light grey colour too here in Oz.
That Honda is a beauty. F*** the haters.
THANK YOU
I think no one would hate a motorbike, except they are not a motorbike lover or doesn't understand about different ia a good thing
I don't think there is any reason to hate either of them. It's just that some like the Kawasaki more than the Honda
As a 58 year old the z900 just hit's the spot. I would love to see new versions of the z650, RD400,LC350. I've money to spend before I die !
Add my vote to the RD400, but we will never see it.
At 5:37 he says the Honda has a “jerky, twitchy” throttle application, but then says at 12:10 the Kawasaki throttle “isn’t as smooth” as the Honda.
Which one is it? This is a big factor for me in choosing
I have tested both and now own the Honda, the Honda CB1000R is smoother
I could recommend either of these bikes! It just depends on your personal view and likes. I have a new Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe! And I really enjoy everything about it! Retro with a bright Future in Green!
Blame the Euro4/5 for the twitchy throttle. If you get the bike properly mapped with a pipe, it will be butter smooth!
Disagree. I have a 2017 kawi z900 and it was smoother than butter even before i added a tbr slipon and PC5.
Love that Z900 cafe. If a bike don't look good I aint buying it.
Wont be trading in the Sportster 1200S.
I'll go for the Kawa
Go Kawi I love the Eddie Lawson Replica reference. My Step Dad had one when I was like 13 it was awesome.
I love the Lawson aspect. I owned a VN2000J but it weighed so much.. Well I will look for a 900se. I enjoyed your review.
Check Honda cb1300 super four out mate.
@7:50
"well, lets change the subject" 😂
Nice video, but it gets hard to hear what is being said when you guys add music with vocal humming on top of the dialogue.
This did not go the way I thought it would. The Honda for me.
Just too ownership of the cafe, loving it.
I haven't watched a ton of your videos but man you can feel the tension between these two in this video.
Sus
There is no tension. LOL
I was hoping Zack and Ari were going to be doing these reviews . . . opps I was a fool. Nevermind I feel asleep listening to these 2 chat and REPEAT about "plush" a thousand times, etc! LOL :)
I prefer the looks of the Honda. I don't like the mini-fairing on the Kawasaki.
Great review, thx, but how is the Kawi @ 70 mph? Buzzy? Smooth? Relaxed?
The Kawasaki easily! The pure classics over any if these. W800, Moto Guzzi V7, Royal Enfield 650.
Take my money for z900rs what a beautiful machine 😍😍
I`m selling my one lung and kidney towards the Kawa. Damn that is one sexy bike!
Comfort, overdrive 6th gear, a handle bar that doesn't have my 50 plus wrists screaming after 20 min....Kawasaki is my sporting, all day ride.
Dealer in Dayton, Ohio has the kaw going for just under 10k as of 11/19. Looks great in person, I was surprised.
Where's the XSR900?
Probably on fire next to a garage somewhere. I had an FZ1, tried to figure out why it was hard to start and had dim headlights, and found that Yamaha "engineers" had forgotten what a relay was, and routed the entire +12V line directly through the ignition switch and back to the battery through a narrow gauge wire that was dropping 3V for the whole 12V system.
Which is a very long winded way of saying Yamaha can fuck themselves forever and should stick to tuning forks.
Stfu pussy
aluisious what does your faulty FZ1 have to do with an XSR? Sounds like you need to let it go man...
XSR triple engine Xever
@@aluisious Wow, and I thought Hyosung had bad electrical components.
Nothing against the Honda, damn fine bike but I'd take the Kawasaki, it just works for me (the non cafe coke coloured one in particular).
Looks like the old z 1 , love the kawi , my favorite because i had a 74 z1
Opening song The Black Keys - I Got Mine, Elevator Version.
I caught that too. Great description
Have some respect for your elders!! Shut up and let Burns talk!!
For me its the Honda!
I don't see anything classic about the CB1000R. Don't get me wrong, it seems like a nice bike but neither the aesthetic nor the design are a callback to older bikes. At least the Z900RS is a Z900 dressed up as a Z1
To me this is an advantage...
I just purchased the 2021 z900rs cafe. The color is grey which made chose it over the green non cafe. And that tuned exaust sounds so good.
Its the ninja 900 engine
@@Justen1980 899cc ZX-9R engine was an older carbureted lump, without counterbalance shaft. The 948cc and 1043cc engines are related to each other but don't even have the same architecture as the early 2000's ZX-9R.
I mean ultimately we can say a Z900 is the same as a 1970's CB750 if you really want to, because it's an inline-4. :P
ZX-10R had already been out 6 years before the new 1043cc engine was produced.
Compression ratio is 11.8:1, and fuel injection is handled by a bank of 38-mm Keihin throttle bodies."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Z1000
not convinced, a "modern" 2011 zx10 type engine would cost more and have at least 20 more HP. Kawasaki didn't do this, they refined the zx9r engine for the Z bikes. Suzuki and Honda have done so with newer engines in their naked bikes and it bears these results- More hp , higher price. Keep mentioning "different architecture" and "rumors its from zx10" but all I've seen is its the zx9r (which was designed to have Fuel Injection sensors) that has been reworked over the years
You can hear Burns scraping the pegs at about 10:30. (Thumbs up!) And what is that South Carolina hat that Burns is wearing?
Thanks for another entertaining video review
This people seem to have a habit of doing weird comparisons. Why not comparing the Z900RS with the CB1100RS? Seriously, you'll think motorcycle "journalists" would know what they're doing.
I'd prefer the 'old' ZRX1200 from Kawasaki...put a few dollars in suspension mods and rejet the carbs along with a full Akrapovic exhaust along with braided brake lines and some sticky rubber...'Let the Good Times Roll'.
Amen brother! My thoughts exactly...
Z900RS is gorgeous. Love it.
As new and fresh a design the Honda might be, it lacks that 'wow' factor. It's very vanilla in comparison to the Kawasaki, which is a real head turner.
I'm slightly confused, which has the smoothest throttle?
The Kawasaki is the smoothest. Tested both bikes and found the Honda lacking in character. Nothing wrong with it just not very memorable while the Z900 was great fun with a bit more low down grunt.
LOVE the retro Kawasakis!!! Nothing sounds like a Kawasaki.
Went with the Z, no regrets! Great bike, has some character. Honda’s are great but they are just to smooth (I own one). When you want a certain look, it has to come with character. If I was to be delivery driver Honda CB1100 ex would fit the bill (beautiful bike). If I want it all the Z. Get compliments every I go from old and young.
The Cb neo cafe is in another class;
Having test drove all below; my liking
1: Z (looks, finish, reliable, throwback, character)
2: Rninety (sporty, tons of character, finish, uncomfortable, price, suspect about reliability and maintenance cost)
3: T120 quick, light, vintage, lacking grunt sound, price, not sure about reliability
4:Honda CB1100 ex great finish, smooth, easy to ride but just lacks overall punch
You sound like me; I went with the Z same conclusion after test drives. I just ordered a Zard exhaust (slip on) for extra rumble. Enjoy!
For me the cb for sure! Look awesome👍
Personally wouldn't put these in the same category. The z900rs and the xsr900 definitely more comparable.
To the guy riding the Honda...where did you get your jacket? I really like the style
That kawi reminds me of my 84 GPZ 550
Kawasaki all the way for me
Apples and oranges. The fairingless z900rs is a more accurate comparison.
